Terminally slow iPod Touch . . . around midnight?

So, for some time I have noticed that my iPT would intermittently get very, VERY slow. I have only recently noticed that it is fairly consistently doing this around midnight. The problem seems to only last for about five minutes, but it is extremely annoying. While it is in effect, the iPod is virtually unresponsive. Normally, I notice it first by the fact that trying to wake the iPod from sleep mode gets no immediate response. If I put the iPod down for a minute or so (yes, 60+ seconds), the lock screen will appear, but it won't response to me attempting to swipe it. If I'm persistent, I can usually get it to let me in before it's done being slow, and I can watch the transition through the pages of the home screen in response to my swipes simply creep by. The simplest solution to this seems to be to just leave it alone for between 5 and 10 minutes from when I first notice it. Usually, if I do that, it gets back to acting normally.
However, I'd really like to understand what's going on and what to do about it. If it's a hardware issue, I can still send my iPod in to Apple, as it's still under Apple Care.
I already called Apple Care about this, when it first started. The rep I talked to told me that it sounded to him like a software corruption, and if I sent it in they would most likely just send it right back. In an attempt to address this possibility, I have done a restore. When that failed to produce any noticeable improvements, I restored to factory settings, then did not restore from back-up, but instead manually reinstalled everything (losing some data in the process - grrrr). Still seeing the same sort of behavior.
So, as I see it, the options are that there is a hardware issue, or there is an issue with the OS (though I've since updated to the latest 3.1.2), or there is some kind of issue with one of the apps that I've got installed (though, to be honest, if nothing can run in the background except the Apple apps, and this is happening in any state, I'm not sure I see how this could be).
Another possibility that I see is that it could have something to do with the internet connection. I see a similar issue come up occasionally when Mail is checking for new messages and everything seems to get slow for a few seconds (i.e. 5s-10s). Though the magnitude of difference seems inconsistent.
Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior? Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing it? Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do about it?

I agree with Apple, this sounds like a software issue.

That's not true. The AIM app for example runs in the background and pushes IM notifications to you even when you're using a different app. Any app that uses the push notifications can run in the background or there would be no point to the push notification feature.
I would remove all third party applications and try it just to be sure. If the problem goes away with all third party apps removed then do this...
- put back half of the apps and see if the problem comes back.
- If not, put back half of the remaining apps and see if the problem comes back.
- If it does, then focus on that one group of apps and start pulling them off one at a time or by halves until you have the one causing the trouble identified.
Through this process, you should be able to narrow down to the one that's causing it.

I have an iPod Touch 4th Gen. I have had it for around 4 years now. It is getting slower by the day! I tried restoring it but it was a temporary solution! I have minimum apps but still it is very slow. Please Help!!

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.

My second gen ipod touch is very slow. I need a way to make it faster. I was thinking about going into the settings and erasing all content amd settings, but im npt sure of that will help.

Try a Reset first: hold down the power and home buttons, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons.
Try Restoring it from your Backup in iTunes if the above doesn't help.

  • Slow ipod touch 4g

    Hello.
My iPod touch 4g 64GB iOS 5.1 slowed down.
I would like to try to "empty" it, leave everything backed up in my MacBook Pro (I don't back up to iCloud, only to my computer) and then, slowly slowly, 1 by 1 start adding the applications (songs, calendars, apps, etc) and try to find out if there is something specific slowing it down.
It is slow also switching between applications and also with the Wi-Fi connection (I am experiencing also crashes from time to time).
    How do I "empty" it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Will my warranty cover my lost ipod touch?

I lost my ipod in school around a week ago. I have no idea if someone has it because I've been sending messages and calling it, but I can see nobody has read them. I tried to track it down with the "Find my iphone" app but it couldn't locate it. I am wondering if the ipod has no battery left and it wasn't connected to WIFI before I lost it, can it still be tracked down by using the serial number or any other way?
Also I just bought the ipod touch around Christmas and it still has warranty. Can Apple give me a free ipod if I can't find it, how does that work???

Change your iTunes (Apple ID) password along with any other password that was stored in the iPod.  If any passwords are associated with credit cards, contact the CC company and get your card replaced (with a new number).  If any passwords are associated with your bank or any savings institution, contact them also and discuss approprate action with them.
The "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief.  All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself.  This requires action before the device is lost/stolen.  If the device has significant personal informtion, it should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

  • IPod Touch turns off when shaken during sleep mode & other problems

I noticed a problem with my iPod Touch around a month after I bought and I thought it was normal for the iPod Touch to act that way but it seemed rather getting into my nerves. I will try to describe the situation the best way I possibly could so please bear with me.
First, I have a problem with my iPod when it's at sleep mode. When I press the home button too look at the time/date for example and then I shake it or move it before it blacks out and goes back to sleep mode again, it hangs up and I have to press the power & home button to turn it off. It happened all the time and it gets really annoying because when friends borrow it, it dies.
The same thing happens when I play a song and then I don't put it to sleep mode. When I shake it, it hangs up.
Second, when I use my iPod at night before sleeping to listen to music and the like, the moment I wake up, the battery is totally drained. I am DEFINITELY sure that no song was playing at that time and it was even fully charged. Last night I decided to monitor my iPod on a regular basis to see at what point in time the battery starts to diminish. I fell asleep but when I woke up at around 10 to check my iPod, the screen is black and yet it's on because the screen is glowing. I restarted it and when it went on again, the applications are all disarranged.
Third, there are duplicate songs in my iPod although when I check in my iTunes to delete the songs, it only appears as a single song but it is in duplicate in my iPod.
    What do I do? Thanks!

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen 64Gb EXTREAMLY slow to sync

My iPod Touch 4th Gen seems to have, in recent weeks, slowed down syncing. I have made no changes, and only use it for music, yet when new music goes on, it takes around 1.5mins per track to sync. The files size per track is the 5MB (192kbps MP3). So I am a little stumped as to explain why it is being so slow, and I do not have time to restore if I am to get the tracks back onto the iPod before I go away on a 2 day course tomorrow.
Sync over USB, iOS 6.0.1, iTunes 11.0.1.12
    Any ideas, please tell me.

Now it's doing it with all my music.I have reset the iPod,restored to a back up and even to factory setting and it's still doing it.my mates iPod still has 4.3.5 and the album plays only one song but mine wants to play 2songs at the time it only stated doing this after the iOS 5 update  I kept a back up of my iPods 4.3.5 on a USB hard disk if I restore to iPod to that back up will the iPod go the 4.3.5?

  • WiFi Slow on iPod Touch 2G?

    Hello,
It's been taking a really long time to load the web pages, so I downloaded SpeedTest app, and ran a speed test on my iPod touch several times and it's extremely slow.
My Macbook Pro shows WiFi speeds of 2666Kbps, while iPod Touch is 220-300Kbps - that's quite a drop!
    That's about 30KB/s - not enough to stream a YouTube video real-time.
Is there something wrong with the iPod? Are they all this slow?
    Thanks,
    Andrey.

Gee, Comcast and only 5MB speed?? That sounds awfully low. The lowest mine ever goes, and only once in a blue moon is down to around 9. 99 times out of a hundred, it tests at over 12 MB. It's been as high as 22MB, but usually 16 is the higher speed it tests at. I live in San Jose and test to the LA server, using Speedtest.net.
I used to have speed issues with my Comcast service, but over time, it all got ironed out (new Comcast modem, new street wiring, and finally new wires were pulled between my house and the nearest little box in next door neighbor's yard). You might call them to see what's up.

3 If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    4  Try on another computer
5  If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • How do i synch my pdf/books to my library. I was able to synch my ipod touch purchases by transferring them but can't figure out how to do my pdfs. Also why is my ipod picture greyed out-the one that lets my move the icons around.

How do i synch my pdf/books to my Itunes  library. I was able to synch my ipod touch app purchases by transferring them but can't figure out how to do my pdfs. Also why is my ipod picture greyed out-the one that lets my move the icons around.
I am afraid if i don't get the pdfs into my book library, i will lose them when i update to IOS 5-is that true?

thank you-i have to check into the authorization and the account-i gave my husband my old ipod when i updated last year so both at one time have been on this computer but as it stands, it only comes up with my device when i plug into Itunes.
i don't think i have any restrictions for installing apps although my normal way of doing it is to download from the ipod touch. i did find that all i had to do was right click on my device name and got the message to transfer my apps and then they showed up in my library. Also when i clicked the synch checkbox i was able to view the ipod touch picture without it being greyed out. after all that i was able toupdate to IOS 5 successfully except my videos and podcast, and pdfs  did not come over. This confuses me since i had dragged them over to my library to make sure that i had everything in my library and on my device. Not a big problem, since i just dragged them in itunes from my library to my device but sometimes i wonder if i understand the big picture:)

  • IPod Touch, iOS 4.0 Update, Error 9, Error 20, Slow Sync, Sync Problems

After wasting a week troubleshooting several problems with two iPod Touch 2Gs, I have come to this conclusion. If everything is working correctly on your iPod Touch under iOS 3.1.x, *DO NOT UPDATE TO VERSION 4.0*!!! Apple will not take any responsibility for the problems it causes (though technical support will assist if your product is under warranty), nor compensate you for the time, money, and gas expended in diagnosing and finding a work around to THEIR problem. And, after reading many blogs, boards, and forums, I am not the only one experiencing problems with their software. Anyway, here are the problems I encountered with resolutions.
I tend to keep my computers very “CLEAN” and “ORGANIZED”. This was my configuration when EVERYTHING worked correctly (with a separate user account for each iPod Touch):
    Acer Aspire One
    Windows XP SP3
    CA Internet Security Suite 2010
    iTunes 9.2.1.4
    iPod Touch 2G iOS 3.1.x
After receiving a notification to update the iPods to iOS 4.0 for a couple of months, I finally decided to “upgrade”. Everything seemed okay…download, extraction, installation, restore…until the final sync stage when it “froze” and eventually encountered an “iPod could not be restored…unknown error occurred (9)” error. This signifies that there is something wrong with the USB connection…it never had a problem before. Anyway, I followed the recommended resolutions which did not work. Finally had to “upgrade” the older iPod Touch to iOS 4.0 on my HP/Vista/Norton laptop, which ran the same version of iTunes. The “upgrade” was successful, so I performed the same routine on the newer iPod Touch, which was also successful. Unfortunately, once you “upgrade” to iOS 4.0, you cannot go back to iOS 3.1.x unless you jailbreak your iPod Touch…which voids the warranty!
The next problem I encountered occurred when I tried to sync either iPod Touch to the Acer netbook. The older iPod had an “iPod cannot be synced…device timed out” error, while the newer iPod took almost 30 minutes to complete…and there was nothing to sync since everything was unchecked. Various testing combinations revealed that it would start okay, backup okay, sync apps and contacts okay, but “freeze” in the final sync stage. Apple technical support could not help since they repeated everything I already performed, and were stupefied! The local Apple Store (which is on the other side of the island from me) couldn’t help either, though the technician there mentioned that he did see a lot of strange issues with netbooks and iPods. After various trial and error combinations, I finally found something that would work. Boot the Acer, log on, DISABLE THE WIRELESS LAN, start iTunes, connect the iPod Touch, then ENABLE THE WIRELESS LAN…sync works. If you disconnect the iPod or exit out of iTunes, you’ll need to DISABLE THE WIRELESS LAN before starting iTunes and connecting the iPod again. Talk about pain in the rear!!!
Well, I thought my troubles were over, but, iOS 4.0 is very creative at causing more. I finally got around to syncing my music, when what would happen…another “freeze”. This time, it would “freeze” when transferring my music from iTunes to the iPod, and eventually error with “iTunes could not copy…unknown error occurred (-20)”. Connecting all USB devices before booting computer, deleting all iPod backups, restarting all iPod/iTunes services, disabling firewall and snoozing AV protection…nothing worked. So, I finally uninstalled the CA Internet Security Suite, and I was then able to sync music from iTunes to the iPod. As a test, I reinstalled the CA Internet Security Suite, and synced the iPod using the process mentioned in the paragraph above. And it works…as long as I’m only syncing and not TRANSFERRING MUSIC FILES!
I have not tried any other combination such as transferring apps or music from the iPod to iTunes, or syncing movies, TV shows, podcasts, etc. At this stage, I’m too busy, too tired, and brain damaged to troubleshoot further problems. But, I did notice one thing each problem had in common. It would “freeze” around the Bonjour process, which seemed to attempt network access. According to Apple technicians, the sync process should not access the network at all.
Hope this helps those of you who are stuck at the various stages mentioned. If you have further information about Bonjour or any other problem I mentioned, please leave a comment. And for Apple, *ADMIT THE PROBLEM WITH iOS 4.0, AND FIX IT*!!!
