Text breaks in unwanted places

I have a file here and in a text frame the text os breaking in the wrong places. There are three em dashes used. I've tried using different types of dashes etc, but the text can still break oddly if I change the width of the text frame narrower.
I converted the Indesign file to quark and it works OK there.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks, Tim
Here is the file:

There are a number of things that seem odd to me (I renamed the fonts folder and opened it in CS5 so ID would find the fonts you sent).
The vertical height of the pasteboard is HUGE, and I get a missing APID plugin warning. Neither of those will keep the file from opening, but the large pasteboard is often indicative of a file problem, and the missing plugin might be part of the problem as well. Is it installed on the server version? I also get a font manager plugin error.
I notice that your version of server is at 6.0.1. Are the patches released for server, too? That might also help. Current version of CS4 is 6.0.6.
I tried saving as .inx from CS4, and that neither fixed the pasteboard nor the line breaks, which kind of shoots down my theory.

  • Reset Text Wrap and Object Placement defaults?

    Using Pages 5.5.2 (w Yosemite).
    Wondering if there's any way to set a default preference for the Text Wrap and Object Placement parameters in the Format > Arrange tab?
    For example, more often than not I need to have Text Wrap set to "None", rather than "Automatic".  I was at least hoping that once I'd set a particular object to "None", any new objects I created or which were dragged into that same document would inherit that same Text Wrap setting (in much the same way that any new drop shadow setting becomes the new default when applying the drop shadow effect to subsequent selections). But even THAT doesn't seem to be the case with the Text Wrap & Object Placement options -- much less being able to reset a new global preference.
    Any suggestions (which still involve using Pages 5.5.2) appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John B

    just discovered a related topic: when importing images in Pages, how do I set the default object placement to "stay on page" and "no text wrap"?
    But that thread ends up going in a slightly different direction, since having to create placeholder shapes, and then duplicating (+ individually repositioning) same, for almost every time I dragged an image into a Pages doc would actually be MORE work than the current annoyance of having to reset the Text Wrap setting for most new objects.
    I just want a way to set a global preference for that adjustment -- or at least a preference to have all new objects start off with the same Text Wrap (and Object Placement) settings as the last ones used.
    Possibility?  Or Feature Request?

  • Can I add a text link to another place in a Pages v5 file?

    Simple question:
    Can I add a text link to another place in a Pages v5 file?
    My client would like to include a visible, inline Table of Contents in his ePub. Apple Pages v5 deletes the visible Table of Contents. Can I manually create a Table of Contents with clickable links to the appropriate chapters?

    Pages 5's greatest claim to fame is its general inability to do anything much, aka "simplification".
    So the answer is No! and because this is also Apple, You don't want to do that!
    Luckily however, should you still have Pages '09 in your Applications/iWork folder, you can use that instead.

  • Problem with Pages text breaks

    Hi guys. As a writer, I'm going to be using Pages on my brand new MacBook Pro 13" (I just switched from Windows) quite a lot, so it really ticks me off that whenever I insert text in a line in a paragraph, the line below it gets separated from the rest of the text instead of simply moving the text on the line I'm editing smoothly into the following lines. How do I fix this?

    Sorry Ryan but if that is an example of your writing, whatever it is you are trying to explain may not be the worst of your problems.
    I've reread that several times trying to make sense of it.
    Are you saying the formatting changes when you paste or you are getting paragraph or line breaks when you paste?
    If it is the first, by default now in OSX whatever you paste keeps the formatting of the original text. You can get around that by doing:
    +Menu > Edit > Paste and match style (option shift command v)+
    The keyboard shortcut may be my own concoction. Check what it says on your menu.
    If it is the second, the breaks are in the text you are copying and pasting. Some old fashioned PC applications are notorious for having line breaks at the end of every line, instead of just wrapping text as they go. Places you frequently get this are email, some web pages and forums.
    All you can do with the second is clean up the text using Services (available under the application menu).
    To see the line breaks or additional paragraph returns:
    +Menu > View > Show Invisibles+

    Hi
    I'd like to select all text in a Document (in different independent textboxes) and then break the link to it's style (in the program in the Flyout-menu of the paragraph styles)

  • Apple support communities text widget causes unwanted variations in font size

    Typing a simple message into the Apple Support Communities using the built-in rich text widget often results in the published message containing unwanted variations in font size.
    At a random place in the published post, the font size gets slightly bigger, then at another point it gets slightly smaller, then slightly bigger and so on. I can't discern any pattern to when these variations occur - it's often in the middle of a sentence.
    It is not just me; I've seen the same effect in posts written by other people.
    I find these variations in font size are incredibly distracting to read; they really detract from whatever message that the poster is trying to convey.
    At first I thought it only happened when I pasted text in from elsewhere, but then I realized it happens even when I compose the message entirely in the web site's rich text widget.
    EDIT: You can see the variations happening in this post, even though it was composed entirely by typing and editing text within the site's built-in editor, without selecting any deliberate changes in font type or size. A quick look at the HTML from one of the paragraphs above shows some of the craziness going on:
    <p>At a random place in the published post, the font size gets slightly bigger, then at another point it gets slightly smaller, then slightly bigger and so on. <span style="font-size: 13.3333330154419px;">I can't discern any pattern to when these variations occur - it's often in the middle of a sentence.</span></p>

  • How can I create a document with two columns in which the text in the left hand column flows to the left column on page 2,3 etc, and doesn't interfere with the text I want to place in the right? Pages 5.

    I'm using pages 5 and want to comment in a right hand column, on a (latin) text which I wish to place in a left hand column.
    Ideally I'd like to be able to copy and paste the latin text and see it flow over into the left hand column on multiple pages.
    At the moment it is impossible for me to keep the text only in the left hand column Any help!?
    B

    Columns do what columns do, flow from the bottom of the left hand column to the top of the right hand next column. So won't do what you want.
    Your tag says you are using OS X 10.5.8 but you say you are using Pages 5 so one or the other is not correct.
    If you migrated up to Pages 5 what did you do with your previous Pages '08 or '09?
    Because Pages 5 is missing over 100 features, one of which is Textbox linking, that would allow to flow down through a series of Textboxes set up like columns.
    What you can do is run the Latin text down a narrow document to the left and add individual Textboxes to the right and put your English translations in those. The Latin will flow but the English will not.

  • Control Panel text tool options switched places

    Hello there!
    Prologue: I've been searching for a solution for this problem and couldn't find any. Perhaps I don't know how to search properly. The problem itself isn't catastrophic yet it is really annoying to me, as I like to work quickly and everything has to be on its place (OCD?).
    Problem: Once I opened again my InDesign (CS6 v 8.0.2) and when using Text tool, I noticed its options has changed places and I don't manage to change it back. It is hard to describe the problem in words but I uploaded the image. Hopefully this helps to solve it:
    Thank you for your time!

    It solved my problem! I kept trying to drag panels into their places, also checking preferences, workplace options and everything else.
    I can now finally work in peace, without being confused all the time, thank you very much, Eugene.

  • Text breaks / hyphenations – no break?

    Hey, I am curious if there is a way that InDesign can format text boxes so there are no hyphenated words at all. I understand that i can manually select words and format "no break" in the text formatting options, but is there a way to do this for every word in the text box? I'm asking because I have a very large document and any changes to the size of text boxes, for instance, neccessitates me to go to every word that's breaking with a hyphen and choose "no break." It seems like there has got to be a less tedious way to do this…
    Thanks so much,
    Quin

    Hey Peter (and Willi)
    I've tried to figure out how to do this but somehow I can't get the style to work. I've tried playing around with a paragraph style I've created called "variety/species listing" to set the first line as Garamond, Bold 16 and the second line as Garamond, Italic, 16 – and I'm enclosing images to illustrate how no matter how I set the styles, it continues to display the text as Garamond, Bold, 16.
    I've also tried breaking links to the style and then reapplying it. Images enclosed (how the "variety/species listing" style is being applied is illustrated in the first two lines of the final image).
    Any advice?

  • Page break in wrong place

    Text does not fill in body page completely.  I am using FM 10.

  • Item text -break up.

    Dear all,
                   im displaying free item texts and header texts in my script.i have taken a variable g_fim(1000) of type c,and passing the free text from READ_TEXT FM to this variable G_FIM. and iam able to display.
    But my concern is i want to display it line by line,i mean the user enters the text in four lines,but im getting it displayed in a single line. i want the text to b displayed as the user enters.

    There are probably several ways to accomplish, but I recently utilized the following to break up a string of unknown length (I imposed a max length of 65,535 characters, as you can see in the code).
    types: begin of gtyp_txt,
              line(132),
            end of gtyp_txt.
    lv_text_length = 76.  "type I this is the length utilized in SAP editor in the screen
    perform text_word_break  using lv_longtext  "string field
                                                         lv_text_length.
    form text_word_break using in_string type string
                               out_len   type i.
    data: lt_text_tab    type table of gtyp_txt,
            lv_len         type i,
            lv_copy(65535) type c.
      lv_len = strlen( in_string ).
      if lv_len > 65535.
        lv_copy = in_string(65535).
      else.
        lv_copy = in_string(lv_len).
      endif.
      call function 'RKD_WORD_WRAP'
        exporting
          textline  = lv_copy
          delimiter = space
          outputlen = out_len
        tables
          out_lines = lt_text_tab
        exceptions
          others    = 0.
      if lines( lt_text_tab ) gt 0.
        append lines of lt_text_tab to gt_text_tab.
      endif.
    endform.

    I have no idea what terms to each search for in the help or pages User guides... what is this called that will automatically mirror what is typed in one place in other text boxes?  can it even be done?
    I have the basic print setup fine to go betweent the print label borders, but I want to enter the text once, and have it automatically repeated in al the labels.
    What is this called..what function am I looking ..I do not want to Copy and paste in to each text box, I just want to type in one text box and have it repeated in tall the others
    Thanks

    Hi Guys,
    Thanks for the responses.
    Well yes, I was hoping for a magic 'Repeat Function, and sort of thougth I had used something like that before...but could nto remember what it was called.
    I have been following the answers all day , but have been on and off aircraft all day and have nto been able to find time to try anything out or respond
    I did try the mail merge option...but the pages documetn always had the Mail Merge option greyed out.
    Eaarlier I just created the label i wanted and copied and pasted, but the Alt Option  way is much easier...that combimed with teh Find Replace is the way to go i think for this
    I rarely use any Office apps of any description, so every time I do...maybe once every few months, it is always a chore to remeber how to do things.
    Thanks agsin

  • Why does my text disappear when I place it on the page in CS4?

    The text frame is visible. Is there a setting I have inadvertently used? The text in the  frame is visible on the pasteboard but when I place it on the board, I get the little red overflow indicator on the text frame. Can't figure this one out. It is in its own layer on top.Thanks.

    Thanks! You guys are fast and it is early there!
    I will try this out. Feel siily!
