Text Documents Management on Oracle

Is InterMedia the only way to manage text documents on Oracle? Suppose I have to store Microsoft Word documents on my database... How do I do that?
Thanks.

Intermedia will index all of the Office formats but only through beta2 of Office 2000. This site has a list of the formats supported, somewhere.

  • Document management in Oracle

    Hello,
    We are planning to migrate the customized document management system from various platforms to oracle. The requirement is to have the document submitted into the document repository from various directory and serching the documetns and viewing of th edocument. where in a list of document on the given search criteria are selected and can be opened / viewed together.
    Can anyone please advice what is the best approch that can be used for this purpose.
    Thanks ,

    I´m certainly Oracle has a product for you, but it is not my field, so I am going to ask my friends and I´ll let you know.
    By the way, is your files a .pdf, .doc, .xls or just text files?
    Have you ever heard of Oracle File and Oracle Text?

  • What Tools should i use in a Document Management Project ?

    Dear All,
    I'm developing a Document Management System (DMS) to store all kinds of documents (voice,video,scanned english/arabic documents, autocad,....) but still i don't know what tools should i use ( Oracle Files or OCM ) and are there also any other supporting tools in such project ?

    I need to know which tools could i use to develop my Document Management project :
    Oracle Files or Oracle Content Management API's .....
    is Oracle Files customizable ? and How ?

  • Requirements for a document management system

    We are planning to implement a document management system Oracle Application Server. Here are the high-level requirements:
    · High availability (24x7)
    · 3000 users, worldwide, on WAN
    · 600 GB of documents
    · Workflow
    · Alerts e-mailed on document adds/updated, for workflow
    · Search of document titles, properties, keywords, content
    · Daily backup of new/updated documents
    In regards to Oracle Application Server (Portal), can someone provide me the following information:
    1. What Oracle AS server architecture would we need to handle the above requirements?
    2. What is the Oracle recommended method of scaling up our current Oracle Portal instance in regard to:
    a. Capacity
    b. Achieving 24x7 availability
    3. When documents are stored via an Item upload in Oracle Portal, are they stored in the database or as the actual file?
    Thanks a lot,
    Lpatnaik

    Lot of this features are already implemented in Oracle Portal, Collaboration Suit and Oracle Content Management SDK.

    Generally this products stores documents in database BLOB field.
    I personally don't like this approach.
    We developed a media library that stores the files in filessystem, but the metadata is in database. The database references to the file in filesystem with a BFile field
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/sql_elements001.htm#i54873
    The system is very fast so I think it was a good decision to store the media this way.
    If you use this approach you have to create database and filessystem backup also.
    Filessystem backup is much faster and there are several very good tools to make an incremental backup.
    If you store media in a database you can use Oracle Media types:

  • Document management system using oracle text

    i plan to create document management system using oracle text with following features
    1) document comparision
    2) document search
    and more...
    can oracle text be used to display documents of various formats by converting them to HTML. and can search keywords be highlighted in the document.
    please help!

    Have you ever considered doing this in Oracle Application Express (free on top of the Oracle database)? How about something like:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B31036_01/doc/appdev.22/b28839/up_dn_files.htm
    Index the files using the CONTEXT index, and perhaps the docs' meta with it using the Oracle Text MULTI_COLUMN_DATASTORE, and then when you write your query for a report on the documents include a search string.
    I've created a number of APEX-based document management systems and it is quite easy once you get the hang of using this environment. I suggest looking at some of the tutorials/how-to documents and you'll be on your way quickly.
    Start with the upload application. Once you can get your documents in, create a report that shows everything except the document. Verify all of this works correctly.
    Add some "items" to the page for the report, and include them as bind variables in the where clause.
    After that, add your Oracle Text index to the database, and toss in a "text-field" item to the APEX page. Modify your report query, adding the CONTAINS clause, and use the newly created item as a bind variable. There's your keyword search.
    Linking to Oracle Apps is done through API's and may be over database links.
    Hope it helps. Though not a step-by-step how to document, this should point you in the right direction. Get familiar with APEX as that covers most of what you described.

  • Using the Document Manager Rich Text Editor

    I'm wondering whether there is a reasonable way we can use the Rich Text Editor (based on CKEditor) that is contained within the Document Manager task flow (primarily for editing Wiki pages) outside of the Document Manager itself? We have another type of content we need a Rich Text Editor for, but it would be great if we could use the inline image links, tables, links to documents in the content repository, etc.

    Have you consider use Site Studio + Content Presenter?

  • Document Management System in Oracle EBS

    HI All,
    does the EBS offer a document management system where I can store, check in/check out, display... documents with meta data and also original files (like a pdf or word file)?
    If something like this exists, what are the corresponding objects and is there also an API for it (pl/sql or even better, web service)?
    Many thanks,
    Konrad

    It is possible to store documents/attachments in Oracle EBS database.
    attachment tables
    http://forums.oracle.com/forums/search.jspa?threadID=&q=attachment+tables&objID=c3&dateRange=all&userID=&numResults=15&rankBy=10001
    This does not look a real "Document Management System" with meta data, version control, status handling and all that stuff, right?
    If you are looking for a complete Document Management System, you may consider this product.
    Oracle UCM: Document Management
    http://www.oracle.com/us/products/middleware/content-management/document-mgmt/index.html
    I need to integrate third party software to the EBS in so, other products do not help me. But thx anyway!

  • Document Management / Full Text Search in Projects & SolMan Directory

    Hello experts!
    I want to implement Full Text Search in my SolMan and therefore need your help.
    I have installed Trex 7.10 and am already able to search within my Solution Database (Problems/Solutions).
    Now I want to be able to search within all documents in my SolMan Installation - e.g. Roadmaps, SAP Scenario Descriptions or my own uploaded documents.
    In the IMG I already found the section Document Management but I cannot get the needed RFCs (IMSDEFAULT and IMSDEFAULT_REG) working.
    There is already a RFC called IMSDEFAULT, which was created during the installation of Trex and runs the
    Registered Server-Program: Trex_SOT_20080327090311
    I tried to configure my RFCs according to the IMG but, as I said, cannot manage to get them working.
    I hope anybody has an idea or an guide on how to implement Full Text Search!
    Please be so kind and provide help - thanks in advance!
    Best regards
    Gerold

    Gerold,
    I am running into the same issues because we want to do full text search on project documentation within Solution Manager. The default RFC connections IMSDEFAULT_REG and IMSDEFAULT do not work with the standard settings.
    We created one index for IWBSOLAR so maybe I also need to check IWBPROJ in SKPR06 for project documentation and create a new index for this one ?
    The indexing for IWBSOLAR now fails although there seem to be over 6000 documents marked but none are put in the index. After indexing there is a list of the documents all with code 6401 but cannot find any where what this code means. It seems to be succesful as all entries are green.
    Any help/suggestions on this topice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Conceptual questions with document management and Apex:

    Hello Everyone,
    I have reviewed or participated in thread discussions focusing primarily on subject matters concerning text editors, spellcheckers and document printing. The reason for this is due to our client requesting the creation of a basic centralized document management system that will enable users to create, edit and print technical documents in a database centric web-based environment. The caveat is that the client would like the same basic functionality that users get from MS Word. I know about FCKeditor or TinyMCE and their associated spellcheckers. What concerns me is that I have not found a possible plug-in to handle tracking changes, no one wants to re-read a large multiple page document again when all they would rather do is just view the changes. I know there are possible database schemas that might facilitate this type of functionality; I am just hoping it is more of a plug-in function.
    So with all that being said my dilemma is how to approach the design of such an application using Apex, if that is possible. Some questions I have are:
    1. Do design the application where you have a text field that contains the entire document, which could be as many as 25 or more pages?
    2. Or do you break down the document in to multiple text fields and then assimilate them in to a single multi page document when printing?
    3. Would you store the document data using XML under condition 1, 2, both or not at all?
    4. What types of data tables might exist, such as tables for document templates, work-in-process and final documents or something else?
    I know there are a lot of other concepts/questions to consider and a large part of the design approach would be based on client requirements. My goal here is to gather different basic conceptual approaches, from forum members, in order to help facilitate a starting point for the project.
    By the way I have seen on the Apex Latest Forum Poll, for quite sometime, where Document Management is an application that people would like to see developed. Can anyone from the Apex-team tell me if it is in the works and if so, when?
    Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.
    Kyle

    Hey Chet,
    Thanks for the response; actually I had visited the sample package apps. site awhile back and did not realize more had been added. My problem is that I use Apex 2.1 and not 2.2, so unless there is a way to load the package apps. to the Oracle hosted site, I won't be able to review there design. It would be nice if Oracle tied these package apps. to their demonstration applications sample downloads function in Apex.
    As for storing each line of the document in a single record, this was thought of as an initial approach. A concern by the team was how to program the logic to identify specific changed text in say a 5 sentence paragraph and how large the table would become if recording it line by line.
    It is still a good approach to consider and we appreciate the input.
    Thanks
    Kyle

  • Document manager  customization

    Hi All,
    I am using document manager to display some of the attachment which is stored in my folder located
    at content server .
    1. I just want to display my attachment in grid format instead of tree is it possible ?
    2. Is it possible to display only upload and delete icon and disable rest of icon from document manager .
    3. Is it possible to create a folder on content server from my api on performing certain action .
    4. If i know the username(test1) and passwd (test2) has the acccess to CS .
    Can i assign to a particular content manger to authorize at page load time ?
    Thanks,

    Managed to finish the app.
    Below you can find the code of the most important files:
    First my UCM_TEST class. This class i have used to test the IDC API and to use as an upload and delete function.
    The implementation is not realy clean. In normal environments you will have a controller taking care of the IdcContext and IdcClient instead of creating one every single call. As you can see.. it is fairly easy to create a connection and call the service

            catch(Exception e) {
              System.out.println("error uploading file: " + e.getMessage());
        private File IsToFile(InputStream is,String filename)
          try
            File f=new File(filename);
                OutputStream out=new FileOutputStream(f);
                byte buf[]=new byte[1024];
                int len;
                while((len=is.read(buf))>0)
                out.write(buf,0,len);
                out.close();
                return f;
          catch(Exception e) {
            System.out.println("Error in converting file: " + e.getMessage());
            return null;
        }You need to convert the inputStream of the UploadFile (this is the type you have from the af:inputFile value) to a regular java File object so we can add it to the UCM service. That's why you need the IsToFile function.
    I haven't implemented the delete but it has been added to the UCM_TEST class so you only need to get the values of dId and dDocName and call the ucm_test method.
    I will write a whitepaper about integrating UCM with webcenter and will discuss these techniques in a bit more detail with screenshots and so. In the whitepaper i will try to create a complete utility to use UCM and RIDC in webcenter application.
    It can take a few days or a week to finish it but meanwhile you have the means to create whatever you want using the RIDC api :)
    As you also might noticed is that you upload the document without a folder. If you want to store the document in a folder you will need to set the xCollectionID parameter but then you need to find out the collectionID. Therefore you will need to use the folder service to get the folderID from a folder name.
    I will also include this in my whitepaper...
    Hope this helps :)
    Edit: these are the links to the documentation that comes in handy:
    Use of RIDC API: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/doc.1111/e16819.pdf
    Overview of available services and their parameters in UCM: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/doc.1111/e11011.pdf
    The last one is very handy... It describes every single service available in UCM.

  • Document Management Partners

    What Document Management Applications can Oracle Portal interface with? There was apparently a white paper published in Spring 2002 about interfacing Documentum with Oracle Portal. I cannot find this White Paper and cannot see Documentum listed as a partner in the Portlet Catalog. Are there any other doc management vendors Oracle Portal interfaces with?

    Jeff,
    Oracle is working with Documentum to produce portlets that expose Documentum functionality. These portlets are not yet released, so they are not in the Portal Catalog. Availability date is not yet finalized. Please periodically check the Catalog for latest information.
    Oracle does have a number of document management partners -- 170 Systems, Interwoven, Mediasurface plc, Open Text, Stellent and Tridion -- all of which are in the Portal Catalog.

  • Enterprise Manager for Oracle 8.1.5 Win NT 4.0

    Anyone know where can I download the Enterprise Manager for Oracle 8.1.5 running Windows NT 4.0?
    The one in the Oralce download is for 8.1.6?
    Thanks
    Eng Wah

    Depends on how big is your database.
    For small database, doing a export and import is quick and dirty.
    For larger database, I would suggest migrate the database. But this means a lot of work and test. This is what I would do if I am doing amigration:
    1. Do a cold backup of your 815 database
    2. On your new test box, try to install 815 and start your old database
    3. Upgrade your database to 8174
    4. Install 10gr2 on your new test box
    5. Migrate your 8174 database to 10gr2.
    6 Test a lot
    7. Repeat steps 1-6 2-3 times
    8. Document tthe process and your test results completely.
    9. Repeat what you document on your production box.

  • How to install Oracle BPEL Process Manager for OracleAS Middle Tier

    hi,
    i need to install BPEL process manager, so i download the following file from otn
    1.soa_windows_x86_101310_disk1
    2.soa_windows_x86_bpel_101310
    here i read the document named b28980.pdf from bpel\doc\pc.1012 to install BPEL PM
    so i start to complete the pre-installation task
    1.installed Oracle database 10g
    2.Run the Integration Repository Creation Assistant on the Database
    3.Install Oracle Application Server 10g Release3 (10.1.3.1.0) and select either the J2EE Server installation type or the J2EE and Web Server installation type. selected J2EE and Web Server installation type
    and installed according to the Oracle application server installation guide.
    installed OracleAS in the path : D:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1
    4.Install the current release of Oracle BPEL Process Manager for OracleAS Middle Tier
    here they mention to select the J2EE and Web Server installation type because that type is selected in Oracle AS installed in Oracle Application Server
    so i start to install the BPEL PM by selecting the setup.exe-->and shows the location source and destination
    default destination is : D:\product\10.1.3.1\OraBPEL_1 selected next on the screen
    the next screen is select installation type here there are two types named
    1.BPEL process Manager for Developer (371MB)
    2.BPEL process manager for Oracle AS Middle tier (107MB)
    i selected 2.BPEL process manager for Oracle AS Middle tier (107MB) and click next
    pop up window opens with title dependencies
    error:
    BPEL Process manager for oracle AS Middle tier will run on top of a supported Oracle Application Server 10.1.3.1.0 J2EE server and Web Server Or J2EE server instance. this location does not contain this instance. Please select new Oracle home that contains a supported instance.
    so i changed the destination path to : D:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\BIN then also i got the same error.
    please any one mention the path for J2EE and Web Server instance for installing the BPEL PM for Oracle AS Middle Tier.
    Thanks in Advance
    Aswath Thaniga

    If you choose the developer version you will be fine.
    If you have installed J2EE and Web Server installation into D:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1 then this is the location you install your BPEL PM into, not D:\product\10.1.3.1\OraBPEL_1 or D:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1\BIN.
    D:\product\10.1.3.1\OracleAS_1 is what we call the ORACLE_HOME, generally we create a new home for each install, but in this case there is a dependency on 10.1.3.1 OC4J container. So it needs to be installed into 10.1.3.1 oracle home.
    The bin directory is just the executables for that home, its not the actual. home.
    cheers
    James
