Text entry problem

On an opening page of a book I'm building, I simply want to enter text. I created a frame and began typing text in it, but InDesign insists on numbering my paragraphs. I don't want the numbers. How do I turn them off?

It's also possible that your Basic Paragraph Style has numbering turned on, either in that document, or in your default preferences. If it's that document, you can right-click and Edit that paragraph style, and turn Bullets and Numbering off. Or, if it's in your defaults, you can close all documents, and then edit the Basic Paragraph Style with no documents open, and the setting will stick for all new documents.
I'd suggest reading through the section on paragraph styles in the Help; they're incredibly useful & powerful, but also a little bit hard to understand if you've never used them before, and they can have unexpected results if you're not careful and aren't already familiar with how they work.

  • How to fix a text entry problem

Sometimes when I'm entering text with my keyboard it refuses to work. After starting TextEdit and typing a few characters (which always works), then going back to where I was, text entry works fine again. This problem is maddening!! Any idea what causes this or how to fix it? Thanks!!!!

Are you using a Magic Mouse with scrolling enabled.  That happens to me frequently when I somehow swip horizontally in an app.  All text entry or other use freezes until I reswipe back somehow.
Try changing the horizontal swipe from one finger to two finger in the System/Mouse preference pane and see if that will prevent the freeze.

  • Windows 8, Safari text entry problems (online text box only)

At websites like LinkedIn, Yelp etc. I get weird anomolies when entering text. I have to click out of the online text box and click back in to enter text.
    I get:
No text when hitting a character key
    Weird carriage returns
Sometimes I simply cannot enter text
I have not exceeded the character limit
Is this my hardware, Safari in Win8, the OS? I just don't know where to start and it's really becoming a problem.
    Cheers!

figured it out - just in case anyone else needs to know how to get carriage returns - make sure 'show scrollbar' is selected in the properties.

  • I continue to have problems with text entry with Android 4.1.2 -- Any word on an update?

When my phone (Droid 4: I like the physical keyboard, which seems to be going the way of the dodo) was upgraded to 4.1.2 a while back, the following happened:
    -- Spell check disappeared from text entry using any browser;
    -- Auto-complete started losing track of where I was in a sentence, so hitting backspace deleted entire words instead of the last character typed;
-- The Swype keyboard ceased to function.
As a result, I had to give up on many of the spell-check features and give up on the Swype keyboard.
I'm really hoping that an update is forthcoming, and further, that it will fix the issues with the last one.
    Anyone have any idea?

I have not installed any third party messaging apps or keyboard functionality apps, at least not intentionally.  I rebooted in Safe Mode and all symptoms are the same.  I tested it by going to Google Translate, which has a web input window.  Spell check was inactive, Swype was capitalizing every word, making it basically useless.
A symptom that  I failed to mention continues to be present in Safe Mode also – when hitting the shift key and backspacing, the selected text is not highlighted, so I basically have to guess what I’ve selected, and only find out if I’m right once I hit backspace or start typing in replacement text.
Spell check was inactive in third party applications also, for example Quick Office.  It did show up in Gmail.  I was unable to duplicate any application getting lost in terms of where the cursor is so that I deleted the wrong text; however, this is an intermittent problem, so I would probably have to do a lot of typing, etc., to duplicate it.   However, I have seen other posts complaining about phone behavior very similar to what I reported.
Bottom line – The phone acted precisely the same in Safe Mode as it did outside of Safe Mode.
    Thanks.

  • AppleScript Studio/Xcode problem - Problem with text entries! Please help!

Hey, I've been up for hours each night looking for solutions to this but still have had no luck.
I am creating an app in Xcode/Applescript studio that will ask you to enter how many times you would like system events to repeat a certain keystroke. First of all, the code would look something like this:
    on click theObject
If the name of theObject is equal to "myApplication" then
(Right here would be where the variables representing text in an input in the app's window would be, which I have absolutely no clue what to type.)
    tell application "text edit"
    activate
    tell application "system events"
    keystroke x (x representing a variable)
    end tell
    end tell
    end clicked
and that's about as far as I can get. I want a variable representing the text in the main text entry box, but I have no clue how to access that text, or even know if it's submitted or detected when I hit a button. Hopefully you're following, as I am way to confused to fully explain it, but please try and help me out if you can.

  • Problem with Text Entry BoX in Adobe Captivate 6

I could not enter correct responses for my text entry box. Plus, the "success" and " failure" options were greyed out for me under properties>options.
I notice my icon is IAB for text entry box, whereas some users have a placeholder sign for the icon.

This is very strange, even when not validated you should have at least the Success option in the Properties panel. If it is not validated you are left only with the Success event, that can fire an action when the Submit button for the TEB is pressed (or the shortcut key is used). You cannot be working on a master slide, because it is not possible to insert a TEB there. Please, post a screenshot of the stage with the properties panel, actions accordion.

  • Text Entry Boxes and their content not being captured in Automatic Recording

I have searched the forums here and elsewhere extensively and whilst I have found people with similar issues, I have yet to find a solution. My problem is this:
I am trying to record myself using a piece of software which contains numerous text fields. In the past, when using Captivate 3, I would simply fill out these fields and Captivate would record my entries automatically. When the project was played back, the training simulation would pause and allow the user to type in the text field and provided the entry matched the options I had defined, the simulation would continue to the next step.
So, my colleague and I have since bought Adobe Tech. Comms. Suite 2 and have upgraded Captivate 3 to version 4. Ever since doing this we have both been unable to successfully capture text entry boxes with their content when recording automatically in any mode. We have checked and triple checked the settings to make sure that the automatic capture of text entry in fields is turned on yet we still cannot get Captivate to perform this task it once so easily could. We both suffer from the same problem on both of our installations of Captivate 4. We have tried recording in all modes with no success.
I am tearing my hair out as I need to come up with some sample content for a major Governmental client which would be worth a 5 figure sum to my company and I really don't relish having to manually create every text entry box as there are a LOT of them in this application!
I have also reported this as a bug to Adobe using the correct form. As yet, no response.
I would really appreciate any genuine help that can be offered by you guys.
    In desperation,
    Rob.

Ok, I think I've sussed it!
I've been pulling my hair out for weeks on this and after posting on here, I decided to try something and I think I may have found the problem.
I work with a laptop as I am a Trainer and therefore quite mobile. When I'm in the office, I dock my laptop and use the Extended Desktop functionality of Windows so I have my laptop screen and a second 19" monitor which i find incredibly useful as screen real estate is always at a premium. And this is where I believe the problem lies.
I performed a simple test and have repeated this test with identical outcomes everytime. Here is what I did. I fired up Captivate and Outlook and opened up a new mail window in Outlook. I then set Captivate to record the new mail window and hit record. I typed some text into the To field and the Subject field and then stopped the recording. I then previewed the results. When the new mail window was on my primary screen, (i.e the laptop) the Text Entry Box recording worked 100% fine. However, if the new mail screen was residing on my secondary screen, i.e. the monitor, the Text Entry Box recording failed!
So it would seem that Captivate 4 has an issue with seeing the text entered on a secondary monitor when Windows is running in Extended Desktop mode. I am absolutely certain this wasn't an issue with Captivate 3 as I created plenty of content without any of these problems and I was using the Extended Desktop back then.
So, if anyone else is having the same issue, and you are running an Extended Desktop, try what I did above.
In the meantime, I am raising this issue with Adobe in the hope they can get this fixed, but at least now I can carry on with my content creation
    Regards,
    Rob.

  • Captivate 6 Text Entry Events Do Not Pass

I am a long-time user of Captivate going back to version 2. I've created a simulation course with numerous text entry events that do not validate correctly. I am typically using the TAB key to validate the text entered. I have several lessons where everything works fine, but many that have problems.
Typically when TAB is used at the end of a key press, you will see focus shift to the first button on the Play bar - and this does not cause any problems. I see this behavior on the events in my course that work. However, for the ones that do not work, I see the focus shifting to the Address Bar and the event will not pass.
The only workaround I have employed is to use On Focus Lost: Go to Next. This is not a great solution because the text no longer validates with this setting. These events will pass no matter what is entered.
I would really appreciate your help with this! My course is due soon. I would be happy to provide more information or upload my file for your inspection. Thank you!

For anyone who might be experiencing the same problem and looking for an answer - this is still 100% broken in Captivate version 6. None of the fixes discussed in the above referenced thread work. I tried playbar widgets, editing the playbars in Flash. No luck.
Adobe just moves forward from version to version not fixing the bugs they create in prior versions. That's your incentive to upgrade, folks.
Best workaround I can offer is Use ENTER as your validation keystroke. It doesn't have the same problems associated with TAB. Good luck!

  • Text Entry Box--Advanced Actions--Conditional Statement--Double quotes in literal input value

    Hello forums,
I'm new to the forums (and Captivate in general), but I'm having a real problem carrying out a tutorial design and I think you may be my only hope.  Let me explain what I want to do and the difficulty that I'm having:
I'm an instruction librarian at a university, and I'm designing an interactive tutorial for English 100 students to complete in order to become familiar with how to search the library catalog.  What I've done is taken a screenshot of the catalog search page, made it the background of a slide in Captivate (vers. 6), and placed a text entry box over the search bar in the screenshot.  The idea is for the students to conduct a simulated search by choosing one of three suggested search string formulations, and depending on the search string they enter, the tutorial will jump to a slide featuring a screenshot of what the actual search results would look like.  The idea is to emphasize the use of keywords over full-sentence phrases, and the use of double quotation marks to enclose multi-word search terms.
So I've set the action for the TEB to "Execute Advanced Actions" and then created some IF/THEN statements in the "Advanced Actions" pop-up window (with action type set to 'conditional'). The script is such that if the student enters the first search option (how does sleep affect college students) in the TEB, the tutorial jumps to 1 slide, if they enter the second option (college students AND sleep), featuring a Boolean operator (AND), the tutorial jumps to a 2nd slide, and if they enter the third option ("college students" AND sleep) with the double quotes around "college students" and the Boolean operator, the tutorial should jump to a 3rd slide.  This action script works fine for the first two input options, but I can't make it work for the third search option.
I think that it has something to do with the fact that the third input option features double quote marks, and this seems to throw off the script (I tried a quote-less input value for the third IF/THEN just to make sure that it would work jumping to the 3rd slide and it did), and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I can get around this issue.  Again, I need it to work so that if the student enters "college students" AND sleep, with the quote marks and the Boolean operator, the tutorial will jump to a slide showing the search results if those search terms were used in a real search of the catalog.
I'd be extremely grateful for any help that anyone here can give me, we've been trying to make our online tutorials more engaging and interactive (and therefore more interesting), and I think this would be a great way to teach students about using quotes in their catalog searches.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
    Andrew Wilk
    College Library
    UW-Madison

The tutorial is for a "how to use catalog searching" instruction in an undergraduate library session.  We use boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to combine search terms, ex. to search for books about the sleeping habits of college students, I would enter "college students AND sleep."  Because "college students" is a multi-word phrase to describe one concept, I need to put quotation marks around the phrase to prevent the catalog from searching for the individual words separately, so the most correct search becomes ["college students" AND sleep] with quotation marks around only "college students," a user-typed "AND," and the word "sleep" (no q-marks).
A colleague of mine worked out a pretty cool (if complicated) solution that I'll share if anyone is interested.  Since the q-marks where the problem, we've set it up so that the TEB validates the response for the search string with q-marks around "college students." If they enter it correctly, the tutorial jumps to the corresponding slide. The attempt # is set to 1, and if the user fails to enter the validated phrase (they misspell or use one of the other response options) then the TEB is set to run an Advanced Actions Script in which the other two options are scripted in IF/THEN statements that cause, when the term is entered correctly, the tutorial to jump to their corresponding slides. We've created another tab of IF/THEN statements that say that if the response is NOT equal to one of these response options, then the slide restarts (technically the slide "jumps" back to itself and starts over) and the user gets another chance to start the cycle over again.
I know this is confusing (I had a really hard time explaining it in words), so if anyone is interested I could make a Jing video when I have some time.
Thank you for all your suggestions

  • Suggestions - predictive text and text entry

I don't know if this forum is intended for suggestions but here are a couple anyway.
    1. Because email and sms text do not operate in landscape mode the keyboard is very small. This leads to a large number of text entry errors compared to ther devices I have used. The screen sensitivity is excellent so this is ont a problem with using a touch device. Allowing landscape data entry would go a long wawy to solving this problem - the keyboard when used with safari in landscape mode is a lot better (perhaps 10% of the missed keys). An alternative which would be better for single handed use would be to ditch the qwerty layout and have a key pad that runs to 4 or 5 rows of keys instead of 3. In most cases it is only neccesary to see a single line of text entry so there is plenty of screen re-estate to do this.
    2. The predictive text feature on the iPhone is very poor. This is due to a fundamental error in its design. The current implementation assumes that the current word typed is complete but may be misspelled. To be more useful the feature needs to assume that the characters typed are correct and suggest complete words that start with the fragment available. The predictive text in Windows mobile is infinately better that that of the iPhone (and one of the few features I miss from my old phone!).
If this is the wrong place for posting these suggestion - sorry

  • Text Entry with Tab Key not advancing to next slide

I am using Captivate 1 to create a screen that has a text
entry requiring the user to press the Tab key as the Shortcut Key.
The users are having to press the Tab key multiple times to get the
course to advance to the next slide. There does not seem to be a
rhyme or reason to which text entries this occurs in, nor does
there seem to be a pattern to the number of times or forcefulness
in which the Tab key must be pressed, though more aggressive key
presses have yielded better results. Sadly, requesting the users
bang the Tab key with as much force as they can muster is not a
    viable option.
Here are things I have tried:
    Decrease length of slide
Increasing active time of the text entry
    Adding/removing playback control
    Deleting and recreating text entries
If anyone has any idea what can be done to correct this
problem, it would be much appreciated.

    Hi berrylicious877
The following has worked for me in Cap1, so try it and see:
Add the text entry box and include the submit button.
Make the submit button transparent and edit text to a full
stop at the smallest available font size (Captivate won't accept a
submit button without something typed in and a full stop is the
    smallest thing available display wise)
On the submit button, set the shortcut key to "Tab".
My reasoning was that the shortcut key on the text entry box
"activates" the box, thus allowing input and the shortcut key on
the "submit" button "deactivates" the box so that the slide can
    move on as required.
Please let us know if this helps.

  • How to hide the cursor in text entry boxes

I didn't see this answer in the forum, and it took a while to figure this out so I thought I'd post my
    solution.
The issue is that a question requires that the user know where to click before typing, then type the correct value.
The problem is that a text entry field shows the cursor; a dead give-away as to where the user is supposed to type.
    My solution is:
    1) Hide the text entry box (give it a name and uncheck 'Visible' in the options).
    2) Add a transparent button (with default text if needed) over the area where the user must click.
         - Set the 'Success' option to 'Show', and make the 'Show' item the name of your text entry box.
         - Disable all captions (unless they get points for clicking in the right place).
    3) Set the object timing so the button displays until clicked, then end the button display.  Start the display of the text entry field immediately after the end of the button display.
The effect is that the user clicks the correct area, then the cursor displays in the correct location, ready for the text entry.

    Brilliant!
You get a gold star for this idea.  Very original thinking.

  • EXTREMELY S-L-O-W text entry in some sections of a Pages 5.2 document

    Hello -
I have recently bumped into a problem with Pages 5.2 (the most recent version) whereby at certain points in the document text entry becomes extraordinarily slow. In these sections, It takes 1/4 to 1/2 second per character for text to appear. I can type an entire paragraph and watch it appear on screen in slow motion, which obviously makes it close to impossible to work in these sections.
The odd thing about this behavior is that it does not occur at all points in the document. It is not, repeat not, document-wide. Furthermore, I believe it to be related to cut-and-paste issues from either Safari or Preview, but there are some sections where I have cut and pasted that do exhibit this behavior.
This document exhibits the same issues whether I open it on my Mac Mini or on my MBA via Pages using iCloud. Pages for iCloud (beta) does not exhibt these issues, but it is too limited for me to use as my main document creation tool. The document also exhibits the same issues when saved locally and opened via the hard drive of either machine.
I have done the following, to no avail:
    Deleted the style of text applied to the slow sections and applied "default" formatting;
Turned off "check spelling while typing" and "check spelling automatically;"
    Turned on invisible characters to see if any code was inserted into these sections;
    Deleted ALL formatting in the document, turning it into one giant stream-of-consciousness text;
    Cut and paste text into a new Pages document;
Exported to Word 2011 and re-importing.
Only (6) allowed me to type normally when in Word. But when I re-opened the document in Pages, the molasses-slow sections were still there.
I'd be happy to hear any suggestions the community has. This is a draft article I am working on and it's tough to focus on my ideas when I'm dogged by these formatting issues.
    Thanks!

  • Sloooowwwww text entry in InDesign CS5

I've got a truly bizarre behavior that is driving me crazy!  About midway through a document, text editing becomes painfully slow.  I can type a sentence and it takes several seconds for the cursor to catch up.  This happens whether I edit in place, or type in Story Editor.
Here is where it gets very bizarre.  In any text BEFORE this point in the document, text entry and editing is fast, clean, and efficient.  The point in the document where the change from fast to slow takes place stays the same, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER I DELETE SOME TEXT.  In other words, I've found the precise paragraph where the slow typing starts.  If I delete that paragraph, then the NEXT paragraph shifts up and becomes the start of slow editing.  Paragraphs before and after this point are all styled with the same body paragraph style, so it has nothing to do with the style itself.  In fact ANY style below the "magical point" in the document has very slow typing.  Any style or paragraph above this point types and edits fine.  It almost seems like this magical point happens after a certain number of characters in the document.  If I delete text above this point, the magical point shifts further down the document text.
Thinking I had a corrupted file, I exported the entire file as IDML (InDesign Markup) and reimported it.  I get THE SAME BEHAVIOR IN EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT.  The file is about 11 pages long and consists of one story that runs through threaded text frames.  There are about 5 images that have been anchored to text.  (But not near the "magical point" where text editing becomes as slow as molasses.)
I've tried making new documents, changing styles, loading different master pages, deleting the images, deleting the master page, etc. and nothing affects this issue.  And yet I can create a new document, fill it with a hundred pages of placeholder text and I don't get this behavior anywhere in the document.
Has anyone else experienced something similar??  It's MADDENING!!

This is definitely an issue in the Windows environment that has absolutely no impact in a Mac environment. I was just introduced to it, and I'm really scratching my head.  I do most of my layout on a really nice Intel Mac using ID CS5, and I'm currently working on a huge project with multiple team members working on a variety of computers. I was unaware until yesterday that one of the team members who is working on a Windows 7 laptop was having problems making text edits in documents that work just fine on my Mac. There was a severe lag when typing. She could go get a coffee while waiting for one simple typed sentence to appear on the screen. We opened up system resources and everything is maxing out while text is being typed, CPU, memory, network. It's a real stumper. This is not a simple machine, it was purchased to be a graphic design computer and has really good specs, but just to make sure it wasn't the computer, I tried it on two other PCs. One is my laptop that I freelance on and the other is a fellow designer's machine that has absolutely amazing specs (actually better than my Mac), both running Windows 7.  On all three computers I have the same typing lag, though I can reduce the lag some by turning off everything that saps ID performance (auto preflight, screen redraw, dynamic spelling, balance columns, etc.).  The files are on a server, so I even tried copying them to the local harddrive and severing link and InCopy connections. I've tried turning off balance columns and still the lag.  The lag is most prominent in a fairly complex table and I've noticed it is worse when editing text that is on a 10 percent black background.
I can provide a file to play with if anyone wants to see the behavior. I can reproduce it on any computer with a Windows environment (both CS5 and CS5.5).  I would appreciate a fix either in the way my documents are created or for the app because I'm doing hundreds of these documents for the next couple years and this lag is a severe problem in our workflow.
