TextEdit's Unicode broken?

I know it sounds ridiculous, but a year ago, when I saved TextEdit documents as Unicode (UTF-8) text files (.txt), everything worked fine. And when using non-Roman fonts everything looked great.
Plus, I could drop those text files in my iPod's Notes section and could see the non-Roman fonts as they should be.
But now using the same Unicode saving preference, the text files do not seem to be saved with Unicode "tags". When opening and viewing the text file, yes, I see the non-Roman font. But when viewing the little snippet in a "quick-preview" in the info column, the fonts are all gibberish. And when viewing these text files in my iPod, it's also gibberish.
I have tried trashing the TextEdit preference plist, but that doesn't help.
Incidentally, I was able to resolve this issue by using TextWrangler's "Reopen using UTF Encoding" and saving as UTF-8 text with TextWrangler.
But I was a bit disturbed by TextEdit's behavior. Anyone else experiencing this too?

I experimented more and found, oddly, that if I saved
TextEdit documents as UTF16 and dropped them into
iPod Notes, they displayed Chinese characters
properly.
There is nothing odd about this. It is the way things are supposed to work.
I also found from this page
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61894
that iPod should be able to read UTF8.
That note is pretty clear than anything besides Latin-1 (or Chinese, Japanese, Korean if your iPod interface is set that way) requires an xml encoding tag. The iPod can certainly read UTF8. But it only knows a text is UTF8 if there is either such a tag (or a BOM) to tell it so. Otherwise it thinks the text is Latin-1 (the default setting).
I think such a universally used app like TextEdit
really should save with BOM if Apple really wants the
whole world to use its iPods, though.
There is no need for that, because UTF-16 does the job. A BOM really does not belong with UTF-8, it being used there is historical Windows garbage. Either the software should use UTF8 as its default or the text should have an xml tag.

  • Unicode broken?

    So my Arch partition has gone unloved for a while before I decided I wanted to use it again. I've been using it for a few days and I just noticed this
    I'm pretty sure that used to be displayed properly. It's not just KDE/Dolphin, it isn't displayed properly in GNOME or even in the terminal. Ideas? It's displayed fine in Windows 7. A lot of applications won't open the files.

    Now this is strange. When I open the zip where these files originally came from using file-roller or ark the names are of course messed up. So I opened the zip using WinRAR on my Windows XP guest and I added my home folder as a shared folder and extracted the files to it. They names are displayed correctly now.
    Maybe this is happening because the Linux version of unzip does not support unicode filenames? Just a guess.

    Okay, I think, I have found the problem. my $LANG is not set to "en_US.utf-8". It is configured in my /etc/rc.conf, but after login into the WM, the $LOCALE setting is not loaded. For now I could fix the problem by adding
    export LANG="en_US.utf-8"
    to my ~/.xinitrc. I would count that as half-solved. Any suggestion why the environmental variable is not set?

  • TextEdit keeps saving .html file as .txt

    As you know, you don't "save as..." files in Lion - Lion-compatible applications save a copy, and you don't get to specify what extension you want. So... I have all the proper preferences checked for TextEdit to properly open and manage .html documents ("ignore rich text commands in html files" is checked, "add .txt extension to plain text files" is unchecked. But every time I edit and then save an html source file, TextEdit changes the extension from .html to .txt. I've tried closing and opening the file again, both from the Finder and from TextEdit, and I see the same behavior. I can't figure out any way to keep the .html extension from within the appication - I always have to find the file in the Finder and manually change the extension back to .html after every time I edit it. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    I'd like to use TextEdit.  But, for me, it is totally broken right now.  I don't know if everyone is having the same problems, but this is what it is doing to me.
    .TXT extension change - All plaintext document extensions are being changed to .txt on save (either explicit or autosave).  I like to do my xml, html, etc. in TextEdit since it loads fast and used to be very reliable.  This alone is bad enough, but coupled with the next problem, I have abandoned TextEdit as completely broken for my use case.
    Unable to edit HTML - All HTML files are viewed as HTML in TextEdit now.  Once a file has been ... I don't know... converted by TextEdit, I can no longer look at it in TextEdit as source.  It only shows as HTML.  This is very frustrating.
    Hopefully, somebody is looking at this, because for me, TextEdit is completely broken in 10.7.1.  I'm having to resort to using vi, as I stated earlier.

  • How can I restore TextEdit.app?

    I had to restored my whole iMac (OS 10.9.3, intel) from Time Machine backup.  (Don't know what broke system.  Virus scan says it is clean.)  Now the TextEdit.app is broken.  I tried to individually restore TextEdit from Time Machine but a dialog box says "'TextEdit.app' can't be modified or deleted because it's required by OS X."  How can I restore TextEdit?
    Interestingly, TextEdit worked fine just the day before but, according to Time Machine, it has been broken since January.  So, I tried to restore it from the January backup.  Same dialog box tells me it can't be modified because it is required by OS X.

    You want to restore the app data, not the app itself. You still have the app, or at least that's the way that I interpret your post. Do you backup with iCloud or iTunes? If you do, you can try restoring the backup in order to recover the recipes, assuming that the recipes are in the backup.

  • How to save a UTF-8 encoded text file ?

    hi People
    I have a little script which reads the source text from a layer and saves it to a .txt file. This is on a Mac and all was good until recently when I tried opening the .txt file on a PC in Notepad and found my ˚ degree symbols all whack.
    Resaving the .txt file in TextEdit as Unicode (UTF-8) encoding solved the problem, now opens fine in Notepad.
    But ideally I'd like the script to output the .txt as UTF-8 in the first place. It's currently Western (Mac OS Roman). I've tryed adding in myfile.encoding = "UTF8" but the resulting file is still Western (and the special charaters have wigged out again)
    any help greatly appreciated../daniel
        var theComp = app.project.activeItem;
        var dataRO = theComp.layer("dataRO").sourceText;
        // prompt user to save file
        var theFile = new File ("~/Desktop/"+ theComp.name + "_output.txt");
        theFile = theFile.saveDlg("Save an ASCII export file.");
        if (theFile != null) {          // check user didn't cancel dialog
            theFile.lineFeed = "windows";
            //theFile.encoding = "UTF8";
            theFile.open("w","TEXT","????");
            theFile.writeln("move details:");
            theFile.writeln(dataRO.value.toString());
        theFile.close();

    Hi,
    Got it, it seems, the utf-8 standard use 2-bytes (and more) encoding on accents and special characters.
    I found some info there with some code http://ivoronline.com/Coding/Theory/Tutorials/Encoding%20-%20Text%20-%20UTF%208.php
    However there was some error so I fixed it. (However for 3 and 4 bytes characters i didnt test it. So maybe you'll have to change back the 0xbf to 0x3f or something else.)
    So here is the code.
    Header 1
    function convertCharToUTF(character){
        var utfBytes = "";
        c = character.charCodeAt(0)
        if (c < 0x80) {
            utfBytes =  String.fromCharCode (c);
        else if (c < 0x800) {
            utfBytes =  String.fromCharCode (0xC0 | c>>6);
            utfBytes +=  String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c & 0xbF);
        else if (c < 0x10000) {
            utfBytes = String.fromCharCode (0xE0 | c>>12);
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c>>6 & 0xbF);
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c & 0xbF);
        else if (c < 0x200000) {
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0xF0 | c>>18);
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c>>12 & 0xbF);
            utfBytes += String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c>>6 & 0xbF);
            utfBytes =+ String.fromCharCode (0x80 | c & 0xbF);
            return utfBytes
    function convertStringToUTF(stringToConvert){
        var utfString = ""
        for (var i = 0 ; i < stringToConvert.length; i++){
            utfString = utfString + convertCharToUTF(stringToConvert.charAt (i))
        return utfString;
    var theFile= new File("~/Desktop/_output.txt");
    theFile.open("w", "TEXT");
    theFile.encoding = "BINARY"
    theFile.linefeed = "Unix"
    theFile.write("");//or theFile.write(String.fromCharCode (0xEF) + String.fromCharCode (0xEB) + String.fromCharCode (0xBF)
    theFile.write(convertStringToUTF("Your stuff éàçËôù"));

  • Adding punctuation marks above text letters

    I frequently use the Welsh language in my letters and e-mails and have not yet found a way of placing the circumflex(^) as a punctuation mark over certain vowels, which can convey a quite different meaning to a word if added or omitted.There is a Welsh option in the Keyboard viewer, but this seems no different to the British version.
    The mark(^) is, of course, available on the 6 key uppercase, but how do I place it OVER the vowel in question?
    Glad of any suggestions,

    It's not sure than a character available in TexEdit may be used in AppleWorks.
    TextEdit is Unicode aware while AppleWorks is not.
    The chars with a circumflex usable in AppleWorks are:
    Â â Ê ê Ô ô Û û Î î
    Here are some which aren't:
    Ĉ ĉ Ĥ ĥ Ĵ ĵ Ŝ ŝ Ŵ ŵ Ŷ ŷ
    For my own use, I built a table of favourites for the Character Palette tool.
    In this one, I put the "accented" chars usable in AppleWorks.
    So I may enter them by a simple drag and drop.
    It's a pity but with Mac OS 10.4.x, the good old double click is no longer usable to enter a char from the palette when AppleWorks is active.
    Some one decided to disable it because some users complained because double clicking an Unicode character gave an odd insertion.

  • Is anyone else having issues with Lion?

    I have been a loyal apple user for years.  I have recommended apple hardware and software to my students.  I use and develop software on Mac (for OS X and iOS).  Since Lion I have experenced more crashes that all of my previous years using Macs.
    Apple, do you care and what are you doing about it?
    Frustrated!

    I had just bought a new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard.  Like every other Mac computer I had owned, it worked flawlessly for a couple of months with a very complex workflow.  (I have Xcode, iOS Simulator, Instruments, GIMP, Inscape, LibreOffice, Safari, iTunes open at all times).  For both the various macbooks that I've had with both Leopard and Snow Leopard, I never had a single issue.  No slowness, no wake problems, nothing ever crashed, and certainly no kernel panics.
    Then, I got Lion.  Constant Kernel Panics, Finder crashing ALL THE TIME forcing a reboot.  I had NEVER rebooted a Mac machine because of a problem before.  iPhoto just plain broken, LibreOffice constantly crashing and hanging, Xcode crashing, Instruments totally broken. TextEdit totally Broken, Wake from sleep never reattaching to Wireless,  Time Capsule backups screwing up, on and on and on.  I actually stopped using my macbook for a week until 10.7.1 for fear of damaging the system.
    10.7.1 fixed 80% of this.  Now, the macbook is usable and somewhat stable, but there are all kinds of things that are just wonky.  Safari won't let me close tabs sometimes, TextEdit is totally broken for me (can't look at plaintext documents, saves everything as .txt).  Right now, I'd equate my Mac with a pretty good Windows system.  This means that it's the worst Mac experience I've ever had.
    Granted, this is an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, but I would say that I have a very stripped down system.  I don't have a lot of extra stuff installed aside from the things I outlined above.  Before Lion, I had a flawless experience with Mac devices and operating systems.  Lion (including 10.7.1) is the worst Mac experience I've ever had.  Hopefully, 10.7.2 will fix some things.

  • Adding marks !

    Hi all,
    I'm editing a feature documentary.
    When I synchronized sounds recorded on a extern recorder with the images after I delink the sound camera and relink the good sound with the images, the marks I write on the video is marked a few seconds before the redhead. If I delink - the good sound with the good frame -, the marks are writed at the good place.
    How can we explain that ?
    Thanks a lot.
    See you.

  • CRM2007 unicode system display broken charactor downloaded non-unicode R/3.

    Hi all
    CRM2007 is only unicode system and R/3 is 620 non_unicode system.
    CRM2007 unicode system display broken charactor downloaded data from non-unicode R/3.
    how can I do??
    any help
    thanks

    Lee,
    Technically it is not supported.  You could change a few middleware settings to transmit the bdocs as XML to prevent issues, but really if your CRM is unicode then ERP needs to be unicode and vice-versa.
    Only exception is that generally the english code-page non-unicode works okay with unicode english.
    You can adjust CRMRFCPAR for the bdoc to transmit in xml vs native.
    Take care,
    Stephen

  • Broken Unicode

    Never thought I would have a problem with unicode, but here
    it is.
    The web site I am working on is ColdFusion MX7 and mySQL
    5.0.45. The data in the DB is UTF-8 encoded, collation is set to
    utf8_general_ci. The output of the data from DB is valid, all
    characters are displayed properly.
    Problem starts when I try to update records via site's web
    interface. I have attached a piece of code as an example (the whole
    query is rather large) to show that there is no charset messing in
    the query itself. However, whenever I post unicode characters (the
    site is bilingual, English and Russian) they get converted to
    something weird. For example, small Russia letters "a" converted
    into number 0, "b" into number 1 and so on. So whenever I try to
    post something like
    "Колбаса" - I get a bunch
    of numbers and symbols, some of which are invisible.
    I talked to the hosting support for 2 days already, but they
    still "investigating", which sort of leads me to think they have no
    clue.

    application.cfm already has:
    <cfcontent type="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
    <cfset setEncoding("URL", "UTF-8")>
    <cfset setEncoding("Form", "UTF-8")>
    I also tried using in the page that posts data to the server,
    common include and application.cfm
    <cfquery datasource="skazkaf_skazka">
    SET CHARACTER SET UTF8
    </cfquery>
    <cfquery datasource="skazkaf_skazka">
    SET NAMES 'UTF8' COLLATE 'utf8_general_ci'
    </cfquery>
    How do I tell the driver version? This is a shared hosting,
    the DSN connection was set up by support.

  • TextEdit doesn't display UTF-8 characters corrrectly

    I have a plain text file with some German umlauts, encoded in UTF-8. When I select this file in the Finder, the umlauts are displayed correctly in the Preview. However, if I double click on that file to have it loaded into the TextEdit program, the umlauts are displayed incorrectly.
    The screenshot at ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/pub/etc/mac-osx-utf-8-bug.png shows the Finder's window in the background, and the TextEdit window in the foreground.
    When I explicitly load the file into the TextEdit program, with "Plain Text Encoding" set to "Unicode (UTF-8)" the text is displayed correctly. Only with "Automatic" it doesn't work.
    Am I doing something wrong here, or is this an actual bug in TextEdit?
    Franz
    Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Well, the "Notepad" editor on Windows XP does it
    correctly with both UTF-8 and ISO8859-1 umlauts.
    I think Notepad identifies UTF-8 correctly because Windows (unlike other OS's) puts a BOM at the start of UTF-8 files. Normally you only see this at the start of UTF-16 files, which many text editors can identify correctly.
    However, if the Mac user clicks on our German
    README text file and has "Plain text file encoding"
    set to "Automatic" (which apparently is the default),
    he sees broken umlauts.
    Yes I think Automatic means MacRoman. One possible solution is to use either rtf or html for the readme. I think the encoding for these will be recognized correctly. You could also try putting a BOM at the start of your UTF-8 plain text file.
    I was unter the impression that "UTF-8" was the
    plain text format on the Mac
    No, OS X stores data internally as UTF-16. Anything using xml will be UTF-8, and that's now the default encoding in Mail for lots non-Roman scripts, but otherwise the other encodings seem to have pretty equal status.

  • File open dialog box broken in all apps! ( 10.5.6/7

    Hi, I've got a very odd problem that Apple phone support seem to be unable to solve.
    Basically, every file open dialog box system wide is broken, from file->open in textedit to the browse button on websites for uploading files.
    When trying to display this finder panel, it beachballs for ten seconds then gives me a grey area where the usual finder browser usually resides and the open / cancel buttons at the bottom of the panel.
    I've repaired permissions which had no effect.
    The finder works perfectly other than it's little file open dialog which other applications use...
    Updating to 10.5.7 did nothing to fix the issue.
    Does anybody have any idea how to resolve this?
    Thanks!
    chris.

    V.K. had you create another user to eliminate the possibility that it is a preference file causing the problem. It was reported the problem remained with another user, so the problem is system wide, not with a single user's preferences.
    The Archive & Install is relatively painless. It only replaces the system and leaves everything else untouched. What is replaced is saved in a new folder it creates named Previous System, in case there is something there you might want to bring back (most often 3rd party files, but I have never needed anything from the Previous System folder).
    The only hassle with the A & I is resetting preferences. If you check the option during the A & I to retain user settings, there is usually not very much that needs resetting.

  • Preview and TextEdit quit unexpectedly while using the EF119178 (FF) plug-in

    Preview and TextEdit quit unexpectedly while using the EF119178 (FF) plug-in.
    In TextEdit (1.7) I simply typed "test" in a blank document and clicked File > Print and got the error.
    In Preview (5.5 (719)), the error was from a PDF.
    I tried File > Save a Version and then reprinted and got the error.
    I tried File > Export... and renamed the exported file then reprinted and got the error.
    I tried the same items with a PDF manual for a random piece of hardware and had the same issues.
    I opened Preview in 32-bit mode and printed and got the error.
    I tried printing using Firefox 6.0.2, Safari 5.1, and Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.4.5 and they all printed fine.
    I opened a .png file in Preview and when I tried to print I got the error.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Posting the crash log shows me that in fact it does look like its the driver misbehaving and technically it is a 10.6 driver...
    The fact that Safari and other apps printed is odd or par for the course with Apple printer drivers?

  • Setting global umask via NSUmask or /etc/launchd.conf and /etc/launchd-user.conf broken?

    The procedure to change the default global umask from 0022 to 0002, so that most files created by one user on a machine will be read-write by other users in the same group, seems to have been broken or to have been changed in OS X Lion from OS X Snow Leopard.  What worked as far back as OS X 10.4 and was officially documented was done from Terminal: "defaults write /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences NSUmask 2" (with a sudo, if not logged in as 'root').
    Another way documented in various places and which I actually used through OS X 10.6 was also done via Terminal. Two files were created: /etc/launchd.conf (for system-wide global umask) or /etc/launchd-user.conf (for user-specific global umask).  The contents of each were simply the single umask command, "umask 002" or ("umask u=rwx,g=rwx,o=rx", I can't remember which variant I used - they're functionally the same, though).
    No matter which method I use, the 2nd or the 1st, the global umask no longer changes.
    Does anyone know whether this has been deliberately hobbled under OS X Lion, requiring purchase of OS X Lion Server?  Is this an OS X Lion bug?  Or, am I looking at something wrong?

    See this support article, which was written for OS X Server, but seems applicable to  Mac OS X client versions as well:
    Mac OS X Server v10.5, 10.6: Setting a custom umask
    The excerpt below describes the use of /etc/launchd-user.conf, and strongly cautions against using /etc/launchd.conf.
    Umask for user applications
    In Mac OS X v10.5.3 and later, you can create the file /etc/launchd-user.conf with the contents "umask nnn". Do not include the quotation marks and replace nnn with the desired umask value, such as 027 or 002.
    This will set the user's umask for all applications they launch, such as Finder, TextEdit, or Final Cut Pro, and control the permissions set on new files created by any of these applications.
    Umask for system processes
    In Mac OS X v10.4 and later, create the file /etc/launchd.conf with the contents "umask nnn". Do not include the quotation marks and replace nnn with the desired umask value, such as 027 or 002.
    This will set the umask for all processes. Changing this value is strongly discouraged because it changes the permissions on files used by the system software. If the permissions are too restrictive, dependent software may not work. If the permissions are too open, they may introduce security issues.
