Yes, third-party places can replace the back.  Just Google for iPod repair. It is not covered by the Apple warranty. I myself would just live with it.

  • ITunes is not showing the purchased button on my iPod touch, how do I fix it?

I was recently able to download recent purchases on my iPod touch but now I find that I am unable to do it. The button for it does not even show up in the edit section in iTunes. Can someone please help me?

What version of iOS is running on your iPod? You need iOS 4.3.3 or later to have access to previous purchases for downloading.

  • How can I remove the back cover for my ipod?

I need to remove the cover because my ipod seems to be suffering from a hardrive problem. It used to just cycle through all the songs in a playlist or randomly play 5 seconds and skip to the next song, but now it just makes a whirring noise when I try to turn it on and cannot get past the apple logo.
Sometimes I get the little unhappy ipod logo and the support website but thats it.
Iv tried going into diagnostic mode and attempting to run a few tests. It failed a USB test in this mode so i think that may be one of the problems with it.
Does anyone know of a fool proof way of removing the case so I can dis/reconnect the harddrive?

    Read the following
he Sad iPods icon or folder with an exclamation mark are the toughest problems to deal with, and must do a Restore in order to fix it. However, when your iPod is showing this icon, it is probably too late for your computer to recognize the iPod.
    1. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    2. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
    Still can't see your iPod?
Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
    3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    7. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. We've found that in many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    8. Try to do an Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a format with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer). You may need to plug and unplug your iPod with the computer for several attempts, and switching around Format and Restore, and hope out of sudden, it will get recognized.
    9. Diagnostic mode solution – which I copied from a thread of a post from thinktwice
“Then I cam across this special Diganostics Mode that you can get to by resetting and then while the Apple is showing pressing the Select and backwards keys simultaneously. It bring up and weird Diagnostic utility witha a abunch of tests. Here is what I did
    - I tried the 5in1 test and got and error on Firewire.
    - I did the HDD R/W and surprisingly it passed.
    - I went on to the HDD scan. This supposedly tkaes acouple of minute so I waited. I think 4-5 dots appeared then nothing. The iPod started to get hot. THe disk was spinning away. After a while the battery got very low. THis test chews up the battery. So I escaped out by resetting and went to connect it to a power source.
My USB was dangling out of my computer and I was too lazy to get the Firewire AC adapter thing going so I connected expecting the whole lockup thing with iTunes. Surprise. IT was recognized immediately and has been working like a champ. So go figure.
Details on Diag mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
10.Let me ask you a question, if an iPod with no iPod software with it. When your connect it with a computer, what would happen?
Yeah, the computer will treat it as a fresh external hard disk, which will get force mounted, the computer will ask you to format the iPod. It does not really matter the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted iPod software on the iPod, after that the computer will recognize it.
Once it has been completed, eject your iPod, open the iPod updater and interestingly, you will able to do the Restore this time.
Base on the above, that's why I suggest Windows users who experience trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac machine or vice versa. PC computer will not recognize a Mac formatted iPod, but it will get mounted in an attempt to format your iPod.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I have just read an interesting solution about the Sad iPod, it does make sense but the warranty will be waived once you open the iPod, I would not do it myself as I am not good on doing this

If it is the same app for the iPod and the iPad (universal or iPod/iPhone app) and not a iPad only app, the only way is to restore the iPad from the backup of the iPod.  That will wipe out all the app data currently on the iPad though.
If the iPad is an iPad only app, then there is no way.

  • The back plate of my shuffle came off!?

While clipping my shuffle on my shirt the entire sealed backplate came off. I could put it back in place but there is a black seal that was definitely damaged....how big of  a deal is this? Will apply replace my shuffle under warranty?
    Thanks in advance
    Maxime

    Hi Maxdup,
I had a similar issue recently, where the back plate of my shuffle came off.
I was working out in the gym. The shuffle was attached to my watch. After I finished my jog on the treadmill I was stepping down and the headphone cord got entangled on the treadmill hand bar.
The next thing I realise is my shuffle has lost its back plate.
I would expect an apple product to be of great workmanship and not just come apart. It would be reasonable to expect even in an instance of some force that the headphone pin should come off the ipod socket rather than the back plate. The back plate coming off seems to me that there was a manufacturing/design defect.
I have used apple product over the years and I am a big apple fan. However, I am quite disappointed in this instance as apple would not cover the damage through warrenty for that matter even repair it free of charge.
I visited an apple store over the weekend. And the guy who attended to me was mildely obnixous.  They expected me to pay $50 odd to fix a $55 product. Com'on what sorta fool would spend the $ 50? He compared the back plate coming off to a screen damage. Not sure that would be a fair comparison in this instance.
I am not going to be the one who'd say I wont buy apple products anymore. But I am bitterly disappointed.
I would love to hear from you or for that matter anyone else who have had a similar experience and what was the outcome.
    Thanks.

  • Replacing the back plate.

Hi. I am planning on buying a cosmetically damaged iPod classic 80GB on eBay. The damage is on the back plate, and I was thinking there are bound to some iPod parts available. And indeed there are (again, on eBay). But all the classic ones are pretty expensive. But there are a lot of cheap back plates for the 5th gen iPod 80GB. Does anybody here know whether they are compatible? Can I put a back plate of a 5th gen iPod 80GB onto a 6th gen one?
And just one more thought, how about the front panel? Can I use a 5th gen front panel to replace the 6th gen one? Because actually I kind of like the 5th gen look more than the 6th.

I have read on an "iPod battery replacement website" (can't remember which one - google "ipod classic teeth") that the Classic has special teeth built into the case which will break the case beyond use if it is opened, where as older iPods can be opened and resealed. If this is true, it would suggest two things: 1. that you will not be able to fit the backplate of a 5th generation iPod onto a Classic frontplate; and 2. you will damage the Classic's case beyond use if you open it.
Needless to say, the suppliers of replacement iPod batteries are not happy! So beware.
By the way, how badly "cosmetically" damaged is this iPod? Space inside is tight so a "cosmetic" dent in the case for instance would probably mean damage to the electronics inside, which might only show up occasionally!
Overall, I would recommend that you save your money until you can afford to spend more on an undamaged one or better still, a new one complete with full warranty!

  • I have music that is playing within the iTunes program, but not on my iPod. How can I fix this?

I have music that is playing within the iTunes program, but not on my iPod. How can I fix this?

    Skipping songs
The iPod seems to fail to play all of the occasional track that iTunes, and indeed other PMPs, are happy to play. There is probably some minor technical error in the internal structure of the file which is normally ignored by other playback software but causes the Classic to bail out.
If you use Windows you may like to try scanning the files with MP3Validator which can find & fix some internal MP3 errors.
Some users have also suggested that completely removing all id3 tags and then replacing the information can be a solution. This can be achieved in iTunes by selecting an affected track, right/control clicking and using the option Convert id3 tags> None. Since some files may mistakenly have more than one tag you may need to repeat this action. Once you have confirmed that no tag is present you can replace the tag information using Convert id3 tags > V2.3 (I believe it is recommended to avoid using V2.4).
Personally I have found files for which these solutions don't work. In this case the workaround is either to re-rip the tracks or get iTunes to re-encode the file, e.g.convert AAC to MP3 or vice versa and sync the newly encoded file to the iPod instead. Because transcoding will cause a loss of fidelity you should keep your original file so that if a future iPod firmware resolves this issue you can put your original files back onto the iPod.

    1) This is because of software version 1.1. See this

    2) This tends to happen after videos. Give the iPod a
minute or two to readjust. It should now be more
    accurate.
    3) This?
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation
    point
    4) Restore the iPod
    5) Try these...

I think 3,4, and 5 are related. Try the options I

I just noticed that one of the restore methods you posted was to put it into Disk Mode First rather than just use the resstore straight off, I Have tried that and seems to have solved the problem, If it has thank you. previously I have only tried just restoring it skipping this extra step. Hope my iPod stays healthy, if it doesnt its a warrenty job me thinks any way thanks again
