"The device timed out"

I can't sync this iPod anymore. After 5 or so songs I keep getting a message that says "The iPod cannot be synced. The device timed out". Things I have tried:
- Every USB port on my computer
- Rebooting
- Restarting itunes
- Screaming
- The cable from my 5G and the one that came with it
- Updating the drivers for Apple Mobile Device USB Driver
- Searching this forum. That's where I got these ideas from but most of the questions seemed unanswered.
Anything else I should try?

This is my third iPod (3rd Gen, 1st Gen Nano, and now a Touch) and I've never had a sync issue before owning the Touch on any of my computers (I have three - 1 OS X, 2 Windows machines).
Mine kept repeatedly giving me "The iPod cannot be synced. The device timed out" on both of my Windows machines after about 5 songs - 10 if I was lucky. Forget about syncing a movie.
I was able to "solve" my problem by using an externally powered USB hub. I believe that the issue stemmed from my built-in USB ports not putting out enough power to operate with the Touch. After using a USB 2.0 hub that had an AC power adapter hooked up externally... the Touch now synchronizes like a champ on all my computers. You might want to also try disconnecting any USB devices that are hooked up that draw a lot of power. Not sure if this will help anyone... but it worked for me so I wanted to share (this was driving me nuts!). The touch is too cool a device to buy and not be able to fully enjoy.

  • ITunes could not connect to the iPad "Micah's iPad Air" because the device timed out.

After using my ipad air for the last week, I plugged it in for the first time to back up some videos. I get this message: iTunes could not connect to the iPad “Micah's iPad Air” because the device timed out. Any ideas?

Eject your iPad if you haven't already done so. Quit iTunes and restart your computer. Reboot your iPad and then try again, use another USB port on your computer, of you have another free port available,
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

If you are using a USB hub, don't. Connect directly to the computer. Disconnect all other USB devices except for keyboard and mouse.

  • What should I do when my iPod Touch won't sync because "the device timed out"?

Attempting to copy the disk "iPod" failed. The device timed out.
iTunes could not copy "a song name" to the iPod because a timeout occured.
Those 2 messages pop up whenever I try to sync my iPod. It's correctly plugged in so it's not the USB.

    Try:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reboot the computer
    - Try another cable
    - Try another USB port.

  • TS1814 itunes could not connect to the iphone because the device timed out

itunes could not connect to the iphone because the device timed out

The soft boot (home button and power button) probably works.
I just did a hard boot by turning off power to my Ipad Air.
The device time out is a USB error from what I have read.
I am guessing the Ipad air has yet to recognize the type of USB port it is connected to over the usb cable.
Rebooting by soft reboot or a hard reboot causes it to sense the USB port and adapt accordingly.

    Hey amyroseofclyde,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the iPhone is not appearing in iTunes. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you isolate or resolve the issue.

i have an iphonbe 2; previously i synced it with my pc to add music and it wrked efficiently; bt nowadays wenever i connect my phone to my pc it starts syncing and it automatically gets stuck in between and m now unable to add any songs or videos to it and still 3 gb space os free in my fone; after sometime it automatically shows tht songs were nt added as the device timed out; wat to do

I would either say that the iOS is correpted due to a software glitch or y have have a hardware problem like bad memory locations that are corrupting the iOS.
    - Restore from backup via iTunes. This will install a fresh copy of the iOS. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.   This will elimate corruptin in the backup causing the problem.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • HT1386 Help iphone won't connect - "device timed out" error AGAIN & AGAIN

I recently updated my phone to IOS 7.02 and now when I try to connect to itunes I get a "device timed out" error.  Thinking it must just be my itunes out of date, I updated it too.  Again and again the " device timed out" error still happens.  What an utter mistake to have loaded the new IOS.  I have scoured the help files, I have looked at hundreds of discussion threads - nothing.  The only thing I find is many many people seem to have this issue and no one can get it solved.  obviously Apple doesnt give a crap if you are forking out every 6 months.

    Hello,
I would run through the troubleshooting steps in the following document - which one you choose depends on the operating system you're running. You've already done some of the early steps such as updating iTunes, but there are a couple of other steps you can try, such as verifying Apple Mobile Device Support is installed:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
    or
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
