The Eternal Cycle of Rebooting and Reincarnation

Hello, I just got my MacPro back and now it works fine.  I edit Canon 5d Mark II footage on it, natively, H.264, 1920.
The folks at We Fix Macs had to send my MacPro to Cupertino for the bigwigs at HQ to fix my problem.
The reason I brought it in was that it insisted on engaging in an eternal cycle of rebooting every 3 minutes or so.   The machine would power on properly, complete 95% of the booting process EXCEPT for the final display of the clock and other icons on the very top.
Then it would show the beloved BSOD and commence the whole process again, in an eternal cycle of reincarnation and rebooting.  Very Zen and Buddhist and all that, but impossible to get any real work done.
I got it back from Apple HQ 10 days later (yesterday) with a note that it was a "software" problem.  Totally helpful.
I asked what I could do to prevent its recurrence.  They said to close down your programmes properly and make sure all your software is up to date.
DUH.  I do all that.
I don't want to pose an "How long is my piece of string?" type question to this forum, but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced such a philosophically profound, but extremely unhelpful (from a pragmatic view of life), problem.
I don't do video games on this computer, just the Creative Suite 5, updated and current and availing myself of the kind souls on this board via the Web.   So it's pretty much just the creative suite and Apple Safari that only visits Adobe sites.   Pretty much a dedicated video unit.

I know nothing about Mac's, except for that little logo on the top of their laptops... but when similar happens with most PC's, there is a "path," to troubleshoot. BSOD's, on a PC, are most often hardware issues, and next comes driver issues, that bork the OS. Harm Millaard has gathered a bunch of utilities for helping PC-users track down many of those hardware issues, and his tools are linked from this ARTICLE. I have zero clue, as to how much of that material would apply to a Mac - probably some, but maybe not that much.
Now, I am unplesantly surprised that you did not get more from having shipped your Mac to the Death Star, er I mean the Mother Ship...
It sounds like they are about as helpful as the Geek Squad with a PC. I would have thought it most helpful to you, had they pointed out the software conflict, and then given you a few thoughts on how to keep those conflicts from happening in the future, other than the generic, "shut things down properly." As you state, that is NOT your problem - something else is. What did they find? What did they change?
Now, when my wife's new auto does not work properly, I take it into the dealership. I do not expect them to give me a 50-page print out of exactly what was wrong (I doubt that I could understand it, and I used to do 90% of my auto maintenance), but I do want them to tell me what NOT to do, so that the problem does not surface again. That would be helpful, and they have been good at instructing me.

    iTunes Support wasn't of any use to me.
    I have also been having another problem - with BBC iPlayer and other video streaming not working due to insufficient bandwidth, despite my overall download speed being consistently around 50Gb.  This is also affecting AppleTV downloads
    I am using Virgin Media as my ISP, and was wondering whether you do as well.  This might be the common thread.

    The Firefox icon is the default feature for Windows Vista and 7 only, it does not apply to Windows XP users.
    To have the Firefox icon instead of the Menu Bar:
    View > Toolbars and UNCHECK the Menu Bar.
    After that, click on the Firefox icon and you'll have the Menu Bar appear again.

    Also, sometimes it drops out of apps, ie facebook etc. just like you have hit the stop button

    Who replaced the battery? If it wasn't Apple the replacement is probably bad also. Either that, or the logic board is bad.

    Not saying this IS your problem, but … I just went through avery similar problem with Mac Pro3,1. Here is my story.
    On boot of any Mac OP system drive, internal or externalHDD, (Lion or Snow Leopard), original Mac Pro install CD, Snow Leopard CD,nothing.  (Would only go to gray screen,apple logo, spinning gear that would stop spinning after about a minute.)  But, it would boot on XP drive.  However, in XP, on Windows black startupscreen, had alternating columns of two different patters of blue dots and XPgraphics were not as they should be (larger icons on desk top, slow response,different size of desk top (maybe 600x400 when it should have been1024x768).  Supplied hardware test showedno failures.  Took it to shop.  Their better diagnostics showed nofailures.  All peripherals (my drives, myCDs, etc, disconnected.  (NOTE: they didnot try a new video card since they did not have one.)  Still would not start even using their drives(external or internal).  Shop tried a newlogic board.  That did not work and theyput the original one back in.  Shop saidall they could come up with was new processors. This was not a cost effective option and they had none to try.
    After thinking about it more, I figured it could be thevideo card: the original 8800 GT that came with the Mac: that it was so bad itwould not start in Mac OS but would limp along in XP.  I was all set to buy another vid card one-bay just to try.  While doing thatresearch, came across several articles on the Internet that discussed vid cardfailure due to micro-cracks in some solder joints.  These develop due to age/heat cycles.  The proposed fix was to ‘reflow’ the solder.  Figured it was worth a try before spendingthe money on a new vid card.  Found thesedetailed instructions on youtube.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7um_hZYom4  I followed the procedure, put the vid cardback in, and now it works just fine.
    I did not and would not do this until I had ruled outeverything else.  But, it has worked forothers and it did work for me.

    To reboot the box - easiest way (that I find anyway) is to unplug it and then plug it back in.
    No you don't need to reset the hub everytime!! If you do it'll see it as a fault and your broadband speed will suffer.

    This is to answer the above questions in the subject heading and because the OP posted during a nationwide outage. DON'T reboot your box if freeview still works as you'll lose the freeview also. Wait till the servers are back up before rebooting.

    I've had no success troubleshooting the problem I'm having with my iPad Air. Started after I updated the software to the new version . Once update was complete I encountered my screen looked funny with wiggly lines and then the screen turned blue. I tried to reboot it by holding down the home and the off at the same time but that only turned it off and then back on and the same thing happened all over again. Now my iPad air only continues to reboot when I turn it on. Is it possible for Apple or Mac products to get a virus? I'm hope someone has a solution to this problem I'd like to know if there's anyone else out there that's experiencing this issue with the iPad Air.

    This is not a virus. It sounds like it could be a hardware problem.
    First, try resetting your device. Press and hold both the home button and the sleep/wake button for about 10 seconds, until the screen turns off. Ignore the slider that will appear. Release the buttons, then press and hold the sleep/wake button until the Apple logo appears. This is the equivalent of a reboot, and should not affect your data or apps.
    If that doesn't help, try restoring your device from backups, and if that doesn't help, restore it to factory settings (ie, do not restore a backup). See:

    If none of that helps, the issue is caused by some kind of hardware problem, and the device will need to be repaired or (more likely) replaced.

    Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
    Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
    According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
    When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
    See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
    You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
    Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
    Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
    ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
    If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
    Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
    I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
    When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    the apple tv works fine but...if i turn off the tv and leave it off for a while, then try to watch apple tv, the apple tv is off and no signal seen at the tv

    After successfully logging onto your network, your tv screen should display a 5 digit passcode for you to enter into your mac. Does it do this.
    The tv should now have appeared in your device list in itunes and by clicking on the device you should be able to enter the passcode to register with itunes. Can you do this.
    I suspect you can do neither from what you have said but whilst I wouldn't be surprised if the later didn't happen, I'd be surprised that the former didn't.

    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
    Restore from your back up, repair the Library and try again.

    I rebooted and it didn't fix the problem. I just got my iPhone 4s (unlocked right from Apple) several weeks ago.

    Siri has been a bit more erratic than usual in the last week or so. Apple has announced a major announcement for 9/12. Conclusions are left to the reader.
