The Excel documents opens in the background

Hello,
I have a SharePoint 2007 environment where when I try to open a Powerpoint File and update it and close it , an Excel file opens in hidden state which was opened earlier in the doc library. The Excel file opens in the background repeatedly. Any Ideas

Try this - go to System Preferencres > General
In the section for Recent items, uncheck the item named "Restore windows..."

    I have verified in IIS , excel service related Application pool has started . and unable to recycling, throwing error message not possible

    Hi,
    Please check your event log and see if there is relevant error message.
    If you have observed event id 5021 like this "The identity of application pool 625dfcc8e4054c7d8da14feaca288250 is invalid. The user name or password that is specified
    for the identity may be incorrect, or the user may not have batch logon rights".
    Then the error indicates the issue is caused by either of these:
    1. The account doesn’t have user rights to to “log on as a batch job” and “log on as a service” in group policy.
    2. The account permission is out of sync between SharePoint database and AD.
    If not, let me know the event id.

    How can I convert an Excel (2008) document to Numbers.  When I drag the Excel document onto the Numbers icon I get, "Import error.  The file format is invalid.

    That extension identifies the most current Excel file format, a format that can be opened by Numbers '09 (and by Numbers '08).
    A check with Numbers '09 shows it capable of opening .xlsx files when right-clicked (and Numbers chose as the application to open, when double-clicked (if Numbers has been set as the default application to open this type of file, or when dragged to the Numbers icon in the dock.
    I see two possibilities for Numbers inability to open it and the message you receive:
    1. The file is not actually an Excel file, and the sender has added the .xlsx extension to the filename manually.
    2. The file is an Excel file, but has somehow been corrupted.
    Have you tried opening the file with a different application? The open source Office suites, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice and NeoOffice can also open .xlsx files. If they're unable to open this one, that would point toward the file itself being faulty. You can download these applications from their rspective websites, linked in the names above. All request a donation to support future development, but only Neo requires one to have been made recently, and that only for the current release (which won't be necessary to open .xlsx files).

  • Mail merge from Word to Excel locks the excel document

    Previously, a friend of mine would run his business like this:
    Open a client database (excel file), open N number of word docs that were mail merge docs to the excel file.  He could then make changes to the excel file and see those changes reflected in real time in the opened word mail merge documents.  He
    could also save the excel document while the word docs were open without problem.
    Now, changes to excel are not shown in word, and saving the excel doc while the word mail merge documents are open produces a sharing violation (winword has a handle on the excel file).
    I've reproduced his problems.  We are both using Office 2010, and Windows 7.
    I've tested turning off indexing on the files, and also tried disabling my anti virus. 
    If I save the excel file as a 97-2003 file (.xls), then I don't have most of these issues.
    Is there anyway to avoid the file lock when using the excel document as a 2010 xlsx?  Why would it work fine if I connect to an old document, but not work with the 2010 version?

    I have a similar problem, which might be related. I use an Excel 2010 spreadsheet (.xlsx) as a data source to mail merge with document templates (.dotx) in Word 2010. I can save changes to the Excel spreadsheet without any problems until open a Word template
    and try to use the Excel spreadsheet as the data source (Mailings -> Select Recipients -> Using Existing List). Two problems occur when I run that merge. First, any recent changes to the spreadsheet don't appear in the document templates. Second, Excel
    throws error messages when I try to save the spreadsheet. Specifically:
    1. Excel tells me that "Your changes could not be saved to '[FILENAME].xlsx' because of a sharing violation. Try saving to a different file."
    2. When I click OK, it tries to save the spreadsheet to a randomly-named file without an extension, and tells me "The file you are trying to open, '53F11100' (or some other seemingly-random file name) is in a different format than specified by the file extension.
    Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?" Excel gives me a yes/no option, either requires me to resave the file under a different name.
    At this point, I can only save the spreadsheet under a different file name unless I close out of MS Office 2010 entirely, make a duplicate of the spreadsheet using Windows, and begin using the new copy instead of the old. I'm using Windows Vista SP2, and don't
    recall any specific action on my part prompting this change, but it began happening in the last few weeks. Any guidance would be a huge help.

  • Application it starts the the last document opened instead a new one

    After I upgraded to 10.7.2, When I open an application it start the the last document opened when I closed. This is for all MS Office (Word, Excell, PPT), Safari (opens the last tab and not the home site). Any solution to this?

    I unchecked the dialog in System Preferences.
    I properly quit (Command + Q or File > Quit) every application before shutting down. It has always been the default OS behavior that whatever window you had open at shutdown or restart will open when you boot up - that behavior is not new.
    I also uncheck the dialog window before/while shutting down.
    And, I went a step further (this will stop all):
    Open your now hidden User Library folder by holding Option key and going to Go in Menu.
    Scroll down to "Saved Application State" folder.
    Select all content and drag to trash.
    With that folder highlighted, hold Command + I keys.
    In the resulting window (you may have to unlock the lock at the bottom and input your admin password), check the box next to "Locked".
    Lock the lock at the bottom.
    Doing this will prevent any files being written to that folder which means there is nothing "saved". My folder has been empty since I locked it.
    P.S. The macworld article works as well.....

    Notice how in the photo, I can't identify which MS office document I would like to switch too. Perhaps since the Dashboard and Desktop windows are at the top of my screen now Apple doesn't let you have all the applications take up the full screen and be sized individually so that you can have a better idea on what to pick.
    I like the idea of grouping to an extent... If you have a bunch of random things it was hard for me to decifer between what was safari, chrome, or word. But now that they grouped them like this, if you have multiple pages of one program running, you can't switch between those pages easily like before.

    If I wanted to open any of my Applework documents I had to open them one at a time and resave them with pages. This could take weeks.I have 1000s of apple work documents.
    You don't have to open and re-save every AppleWorks document you have right now. Just wait till you need one, then do it. The documents aren't going anywhere.
    Am I dealing with Microsoft? This was a BIG surprise to me that Apple would release an OS without testing all programs.
    Frankly, it is not Apple's responsibility to ensure compatibiltiy with every piece of software available for OS X. That is the responsibility of the software vendor. Lion has been available to developers for several months before it's release, so Microtek had plenty of time to update their software. Yet they did not. How is that Apple's fault? I think Apple was very generous to give you a refund for Lion.
    I'm not trying to belittle your frustration but I do think your ire is misplaced.

My process is pretty simple....with a message open I click the attach icon (paperclip) at the top of the message, then navigate to where the file is located and select it.     Murray is right. Padding (and margins) is added to the width. However, when using percentages, you should never use figures that add up to exactly 100%.
    Browsers need to convert the percentages to pixels. Because pixels must be whole numbers, some percentages are rounded up, which results in the final element dropping down below its neighbours. With percentages, it's much safer to use values that add up to 98% (99% often works, but 98% is safer).

    You will (often) see a preview of the attachment, depending upon the file type.  To get rid of the preview: control click on the attachment select "View as icon".
    (What the recipient of your message sees is dictated by that person's email application.  If you want to make sure the person gets an attachement which is not previewed, you can zip it (control-click, "Compress...") and then attach the zipped file(s).  Or you can try something like Attachment Tamer.)

    or if you don't want a template, when the Chooser comes up, down the bottom corner are 2 buttons:
    *Open Recent* and *Open an Existing File…*
    But better would be drag the document to your Dock and open it direct from there.

    Quit Safari.
    Go to   /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    Move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin  (or just PDF Browser plugin) to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari. Try a PDF file.

    I have a PWA instance with a project site for each project.
    Each project site has its own document library.
    Now I want to create several Templates to be available within each document library.
    I have created the new content Site Content Types (Site Settings > Site Content Types) to fit my needs; each content type has the "document" content type as parent type.
    Now I want include the "version" property (the dynamic value from the versioning) to each new document type, so I have tried to enable the "Information management policy settings" to the parent "document" type or the new ones,
    including the label "{Version}", but I receive this error:The label reference, Version, could not be found.
    So the only way to do this, is to open each site document library and make this change within it.
    Why I can't enable the Lable at the Site level?

    I can reproduce the issue by adding {version} or {_UIVersionString} in site content types > Document > Information Management policy settings > enable label.
    As workaround, please create a document library, then add label in document library settings > Information Management Policy settings. Now save this document library as template and create new document library based on this template, the policy settings
    will be saved for new document libraries.

    It's not an option in the prefs. It's a hidden file that makes up part of the preference set (as far as I know, most, or all of the seetings you can adjust inside ID's prefences dialog are actually saved in the other half of the set, InDesign Defaults).
