The external hard drive with my iTunes library on it died, but I have it backed up on another drive. What's the best way to make iTunes switch to the new drive for reference?

I've been through similar problems before and used the .xml file to restore the library, but is a better way of just changing the drive pathways in iTunes so it doesn't have to rebuild everything from scratch? I'm using a PC with Windows Vista.

Change the drive letter of the backup drive so it matches the one that died. If necessary move/rename the backup folder so that it matches the old path of the media folder.

  • What is the best way to make video and audio the same lengths for posting on Web?

YouTube recommends doing this to avoid sync problems. Maybe it will also make my videos run more smoothly. I'm talking here about random pauses I see in my movies on YouTube, not the uniform stuttering problem which I pretty much solved by redoing the movie at 30 fps instead of 24 fps. (Original is 18 fps Super 8 movie film.)
Anyway, there is no sound during my titles. The soundtrack starts about 17 seconds in, and ends when the ending titles begin. So what's the best way to add silent audio? The best I can figure is to take some existing sound, put it in where the titles are, and turn the volume down to zero. Seems real workaround-ish, so to speak, to me. It seems to work. I even cranked it up on headphones to make sure there was no residual noice. But I'm curious if there's a better way? No biggie if not.
    Thanks.

I should have included the following:
1.) Why can't I make a silent project in GarageBand? I have to instead find a project with a long enough song, make an "iLife preview" of it (see (2) below), copy it from the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser to the end of the movie, and then open the audio panel and turn the volume to zero. And all this so that video websites don't get confused by a soundtrack that starts in mid-movie.
2.) Why do I have to "render" them by the following process: Double-click a song in the iMovie Music and Sound Effects browser. You get a dialog box saying "The project "The Great Race" cannot be used because it was not prepared with an iLife preview. Would you like to open "The Great Race" in GB so you can save it with an iLife preview?" What I don't understand is why this new thing was introduced and why I have to do it via iMovie.

  • I've uploaded songs to my iTunes library on my MAC but I can no longer upload to my phone from my MAC.  Since I've uploaded all of the periodic upgrades after the automatic sync takes place I can no longer find my iPhone on my MAC

Since I've downloaded all of the "automatic upgrades" for both my iPhone and iTunes, once the "automatic sync" finishes when I connect my iPhone to my MAC, I have no way of finding my device and no way to mark new songs I've added to my music library on my MAC so they will automatically be uploaded to my iPhone the next time I connect it and do the automatic sync...

To repeat, I can still sync everything just fine from my computer to my old IPhoone 3S and to my ancient iPad, buit not to the new phone. I have tried every imaginable combination of WiFi and iCloud settingson or off, and syncing the entire library or just specific playlists and such. I am at a loss.
Please accept my apology if I sounded elementary to you. One never knows what level of expertise he is posting to. My thought based on the message I'm focusing on here is that IF in fact you are able to sync just fine with ancient devices but not your new device I would be thinking strongly about updates to either itunes or to your OS.
    Good luck.

Is there anyway to extract the song files from my phone and add them to my computer?

  • An exception occured within the external code called by a Call Library function Node

    Good Morning,
I built a VI that contains Matlab nodes in Labview 8.0.  I made an executable and gave it to a colleage to use who is running Windows XP.  I see in the folder C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\LabVIEW Run-Time that she has 7.1 and 8.0 run time engines installed.
On Friday the executable ran great on her machine.  Today, when she tried running it I received the following error.  "LabVIEW:  An exception occured within the external code called by a Call Library Function Node.  This might have corrupted LabVIEW's memory.  Save any work to a new location and restart LabVIEW.  'my vi' was stopped at node 0x0 of subVI "NI_AALBase.lvlib:Real A x B.vi:1".  This error occured after part of the program ran properly.  More specifically, two of the matlab nodes ran perfectly.  I am unsure about the third because the program stopped too early.  I do have to multiply two matrices using the subvi Real A x B.  Is this causing the error?
I also saw this error when I installed it on another computer.  However I do not see this error when I run the executable or the main vi on my machine  I know there are other discussions on this topic, however I do not know why it would affect some machines and not others.  Also, I do not know why it would work on Friday and not on Monday.  Should I have checked the box that said "Enable Debugging" under the advanced section when building the executable?
If anyone could help, I would be very appreciative.
    Thanks,
    -Richard

This is most likely an error with the use of the Call Library Node, but not in the Real A x B.vi itself. This is a VI that comes with LabVIEW and has been tried and tested many times and unless your LabVIEW installation is messed up simply shouldn't fail in such a way on its own.
However you do include Matlab code somewhere and that might be more likely to cause this. Are you using the built in MathScript node or some other way to communicate directly to a Matlab DLL or such?
Are you using anywhere Call Library Nodes that you have created or that did at least not come standard with LabVIEW?

  • What is the best way to make a custom arch install cd?

Hello, before I start I should mention that I have been reading about various tools and looking at wiki articles.  But I have had some trouble getting started.
What I would like is an install cd that installs the packages I choose.  I'd like this to be either automatic, or allow me to select the packages I want (which are presumably on the cd), just like in the normal way of installing arch perhaps, maybe.
I'd just like a way of installing arch, the way it is set up now, with minimal hassle, no internet access, just pop the cd in and out comes archlinux with a nice desktop environment so I can give it to my mum without having to travel hundreds of miles to install it for her.
"just pop the cd in and out comes archlinux with a nice desktop environment" -Ahahahahahaha, I hear you react.  Well, you know, at least I would like it to be no MORE difficult than the standard install procedure.
For example, is there no way I can just download the .pkg.tar.gz files I want, add 'em to the fracking archlinux iso I download from here, meddle about with a config file so pacman knows where to find the additional pkg.tar.gzips, and then run a script afterwards to copy a few configuration files to the relevant locations?  No?  Won't work?
At least, I have not discovered a way to do this yet.  Please can someone get me started?
    Should I maybe start HERE?
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Qui … stallation
It says it "may contain old, confusing and wrong information" -how unusual...
Larch looks pretty good, will this do what I want?
I actually think larch is definitely the answer.  I'm gonna mark it solved.  Even though I will probably have some trouble with it.  Sorry for asking this question for the hundredth time, but, well, the forums were down yesterday (the day I was trying to do this, obviously).
Maybe I'll leave it unsolved until I get specific errors...

Yeah, I like xfce, but I'd give her the excellent chakra if I was going to give her a ready made thing, which I might do if things go wrong...
But that isn't what I'm trying to do.  I want to learn how to build an install disc, too.  It takes me a long time to get arch up and running.  I would like to know how to automate it so that I end up with my own personal humble distribution.
I realize there are many alternatives to doing what I am trying to do. But there are a hundred reasons I can think of why a custom archlinux install cd made by me that goes "do you want to install y/n" and then you press y and it formats the disk, shoves the stuff on and then it works would be the best option.
This assumes, of course, that my mum can plug in the computer, monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers, insert the disc and press y, all of which are long shots.
Anyway, I'm making some progress with larch now.  I can roughly see how it's going to work, it's pretty straightforward, so it would seem.
    Thanks!
Yeah I see your point. I like archiso because he has a barebone option there, and you can build it the way you like it from there. I just had trouble getting Arch to run for me, so his iso was just easier as I am very unlearned in linux, and at 63 I dont have a lot of time, or energy to learn what it seems everyone but me knows. I still have to work to earn a living, and with a limited education I may be more dense than alot of the younger folks on here, so this just made it a little easier for me. Good luck with it, I hope you get what your after.
Maybe have a look at ISOMaster too, it seems simple enough to use.

  • Best way to make a slideshow for a wedding?

I am trying to make a slideshow for a wedding. What is the best way to make this?

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • I want to put my iTunes library on an external hard drive but leave my favourite songs on the computer to access without the external hard drive and when using iMovie. Is there a way to do this?

I have filled my hard drive, half with music, half with photos. I want to take my music off, and put it onto an external hard drive. However, I would still like to have access to favourite songs and playlists when the external hard drive isn't plugged in. I would also like to access this music to use with iMovie. Is there a way to do this?

You will have to engage a split library which means you will have to start answering questions on this forum because you will need to learn a lot about how iTunes works in order not that have a big mess at the end of it all.  It also won't be easy when the time comes to relocate it all to different drives.
You can go to advanced preferences and turn off organize media and copy to items to media folder when adding items to library.  Next read about how to selectively consolidate items to the external drive.

Remember that when you start iTunes without the external drive turned on iTunes will present you with a bunch of broken links.  If you have automatic downloads enabled with iCloud you may have to turn that off to prevent iTunes from repopulating your drive trying to deal with those "missing" tracks.
If you add tracks in bunches to iTunes and want them to go to different media folders you will need to either add them by holding down the option key while dragging if the desired media folder is not the one set in preferences, or by changing the media folder in preferences.  Changing media folder preferences only applies to new files added, not old ones.
Okay, I am going to stop typing because you might just reply to me, "Oh, okay, forget it," and I don't need the exercise.

  • How do I combine an old itune library thats on an external hardrive and a newer library thats on a newer computer into 1 library and keep them on the external hard drive so I won't use up all my memory on my newer laptop

I copied an old iTunes library off my old Toshiba laptop with windows xp and put it on an external hard drive.  I have a newer Microsoft surface pro laptop with windows 8.1.   I have a small iTunes library on my newer laptop.  I want to combine the 2 libraries into 1, add newer podcasts to the combined library daily, but keep it all on my external hard drive, so I don't use all my memory on my surface pro.  I have an older ipod classic that I have all my old library on.  I love it and don't want to stop using it, but want to be able to add podcasts from my 1 library from time to time.  What I usually do is download podcasts for a few weeks then, download them to my ipod.  Haven't done any of this in about a year.  But want to start getting regular with it again.   PS  I'm not very computer savy  Thanks for any help or advice!

This article explains how to open a different library: iTunes: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one. The assumption is that the whole library was copied to the external drive from the old Toshiba laptop, not just the media. If that isn't the case make a new library on the external drive in a folder called \iTunes and move the media inside \iTunes\iTunes Media before adding it to the library.
Once iTunes is using the library on the external drive you can add any content stored on the internal drive to the library by drag & drop or by moving/copying the content into \iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes. Make sure the option under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to Copy files to the folder iTunes Media when adding to library is selected. Once complete you can delete the original copies on the internal drive.
Should your library contain duplicates after merging see this recent post on deduping.
If there are ratings, playlists, play counts, or content stored on the iPod classic and not located anywhere else then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Ideally you should backup your library to a second drive for security. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for a suggested strategy.

  • Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?

Is there a way to access my iTunes Library, which is stored on a (PC) External Hard Drive, on a MacBook Air (through an Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter), without transferring the music files off of the external hard drive?
In other words, because the MacBook Air only has 120 gbs of hard drive space & my old hard drive, from a Lenovo, has 500 gbs of hard drive space (and I have over 120 gbs of music), I’m looking to manage my iTunes music from the external hard drive permanently. Upon attempting to access the iTunes library held on the external hard drive the following message comes up: “The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file”.  Is there a way to get around this?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

That's a bummer, didn't realize the exHD files were corrupt, esp if you have tried from another PC and not just this new computer.
You can get purchases from the itunes store transferred from an iPod using these directions:

If you want everything (meaning non-itunes songs, app data, photos, etc) you need to buy a 3rd-party ipod manager that support iTouch. Here is an iLounge article to start your research:

I have a macbook pro with only 128gb of hard drive. I have lightroom installed and all my photos on an external hard drive. Can I store my lightroom library on the external hard drive too?

Yes. Find the LR catalog file by looking in Edit/Catalog Settings/General. Close LR and navigate to that spot. The catalog file is the one that ends in .lrcat - move it to wherever you want. Next to the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move that over as well, but if you don't LR will generate new previews. Double-click on the .lrcat file in its new home and LR will open with that catalog. Set Preferences to When Starting Up Use Most Recent Catalog.

  • How do I Play videos from external hard drive on Apple TV2?  Can I just move the iTunes Library to the External Hard Drive?

I have several HD videos stored on an external hard drive and would like to bring them into iTunes and play them via iTunes on my Apple TV2, but I am not sure how to go about it.  I don't want to store the movies on my iMac hard drive because it would eat up to much space...so do I just move the iTunes Library to the external hard drive?  And, if so...will the Apple TV2 find the iTunes Library on the external hard drive?  Thanks for any help anyone can suggest.

iTunes content on an external drive isn't a problem.
The simplest method is to just move your library to an external drive.
If you wanted to keep just movies on an external drive, that's a little more difficult. You'd need to put the movies where you want them to reside on the external drive and add drag and drop them onto iTunes while holding down the option key. Obviously any movies already in iTunes would need moving from their current location and removing from iTunes first.

  • Saving music to an external hard drive thru itunes so that its not stored on my already overloaded macbook, but plays thru i tunes when i hook up the external hard drive

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro, and sooooo much music the hard drive is already full and i'm not halfway thru importing all my cds, I have hooked up a 2TB external hard drive and used it to back up my hard drive with time machine but i want to use the remaining space on the external drive to store every cd that i have so i can become a cd free household. How do I copy music onto my hard drive thru itunes so it adds to my library but runs off my external hard drive rather than my already over loaded internal hard drive?
also is there a way of selecting music already on my hard drive to be shipped over to the external hard drive to free up space on my macbook, as the lack of disc space occasionally causes problems working on dj programmes and garage band when i am recording large files o my hard drive in realtime as i am making them.

Yes you can. Open iTunes preferences and select advanced. In the iTunes Media folder location use your external location.
