The file is in an unrecognized format

http://files.me.com/xebeche/p1k7yg
The original non-edited picture imports normally without issue. The above image was edited. It was taken with a Nikon D300 and manipulated with Photoshop CS3. I converted the photograph to grayscale, cropped, adjusted the levels and saved as a .jpg with minimum compression. When trying to import the above image into iPhoto I am met with this error:
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)
The error occurs on my 13" MacBook Pro running 10.6.3 and iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 (424). I created a new user account and experienced the exact same issue. I then tried importing the file into my girlfriend's MacBook running 10.5.8 and iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5 (378). The file imports, but appears with a black thumbnail and is a lot more contrasty when opened in iPhoto's editor than Preview. Now back to my 13" MacBook Pro. Opening the file in Preview, saving as and attempting to import the new file yields the same error mentioned above. An image with newly assigned ColorSync profile also yields the same error. In iPhoto, deselecting "Embed ColorSync profile" within the Advanced Preferences tab also does not resolve the issue. If I open the problematic image in Photoshop CS3 again and re-save as an RGB then it imports normally.
What is the deal with grayscale mode?

This Automator workflow, *+Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile+*, will convert a grayscale image to an RGB mode image with the sRGB profile. You can download it from Toad's Cellar. Just observer the warning and run it on a copy of the file(s).

You may be able to download and install the update from here: Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01
If I upgrade to Yosemite will I be forced to go to the new Photos program
No. After upgrading (and of course make a back up first) you will need to update iPhoto to v9.6.1 (you won't be able to do this prior to upgrading). Here's how:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
Photos is v1 of a new app, as yes it's not as mature as iPhoto. It uses a different technology for working with external editors. That requires Adobe to write an extension to let it hook into the new app. Not done yet, neither has anyone else.
Going forward: iPhoto will run on OS 10.10., but there is no guarantee for subsequent versions of the OS. You might want to factor that into your anger term thinking.

  • MacBook Pro & USB frustration: Why is it that my USB files appear in an "unrecognized format" when I try to open them on my Mac?

Hello, I recently bought a MacBook Pro and every time I insert my USB, it appears on the desktop. However, when I double-click it to open the files, the files appear in "an unrecognized format". They all end with this: ".lnk"...if it's a video file it ends with .lnk, if it's a picture file it ends with .lnk, if it's ANY document it ends with .lnk. I'm getting tired of this situation and I've only had this laptop for a week. Please, open my eyes and show me that the sacrifice I made to buy it was worth it. I wanted a Mac so bad, and now this is making me hate them and prefer PCs. What do I do??? How can I change that and make this laptop read these files??? Please help. I need to copy some video files from my USB to my Mac as soon as possible.

An lnk file in Windows is a shortcut that points to the actual file. Rather than copy the actual files, you made a shortcut to them on your USB drive. Try going to the Windows machine and selecting the files then choosing Copy, change to your USB drive and choose Paste.
If you were to open a Finder window and right click one of those files then choose Get Info, you'll probably find that it's way to small to contain the movie or whatever.

  • Unable to import jpg file: Error: This file is in an unrecognized format.

I have an iMac 2009 with Mavericks 10.9.3 and iPhoto 11 (v 9.5.1) and am getting an error message trying to load 1000 .jpg photos from ScanCafe.  The error message is: this file is in an unrecognized format.
I have tried the following but am still unsuccesful:
    1) Upgraded all software
    2) Disk Utility repair permissions.
    3) Rebooted system.
    4) Deleted com.apple.iPhoto plist files.
    4) Tried to import the photos into a new test library within iphoto.
Interestingly, my son's MacBook is able to load the photos into iphoto.  His ancient laptop is using Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and the same iPhoto 11 (9.5.1).  I have also tried to upload the file from his computer to mine, but the same "unrecognized format" error is received.
    Does anyone have any suggestion

That's a problem with the format of the photos sent to you by ScanCafe.  The original poster in this topic contacted ScanCafe and had new disks sent to him which solved the problem:
Re: ScanCafe jpeg photo file unrecognized format in iPhoto, not Preview
I suggest you contact Carl at ScanCafe and get replacement disks with correctly formatted files.

  • When trying to import photos I get file could notbe imported unrecognized format

When trying to transfer digital files from my camera I get the following message.
file could not be imported unrecognized format.  also clicking on a photo in an album produces a black screen on my computer.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

It can go to "ok" prompt if press "stop + a".
Could anyone can tell me how to boot up and fix it?
    Thanks a lot.
    Best regards,
    Carlos Ko

    Hi all,
    Thanks for your suggestion.
However, for the case "boot -s", the system seems no change the error messages after reboot and still shown these messages again and again.
For the case setting up a install server and boot server, is it possible to set these severs on x86 system? Since the problem is on the SPARC system and no other available SPARC system can set up as a install server and boot server. I only concern the x86 system can provide install service for a SPARC system.
Could you have any idea to modify the "nodename" file during boot up or by typing some command at "ok" prompt?
e.g. type "boot -s /etc/uname -S NAME" at "ok" prompt or something like that??
    Thanks a lot.
    Best regards,
    Carlos Ko

  • I created a logo on illustrator made of three layers. the file is still on ai format. Now I am ready

Also I am creating a business card using adobe illustrator. I already have the logo in ai format.  Now after I create all the design do I need to flatten the
card lay out or do I just take it to the print shop in AI format

Dont flatten the layers, the print may want to add a die. I would also save a copy as .pdf format, as some printers just want to palce teh file, without spending time on missing fonts or placed images.
So bring 2 versions of the same file, a .ai along with a .pdf. Then also gather your fonts and placed images.
