The future of Flash Remoting?

We are about to embark on a major, long term project which
requires Flash/Database connectivity and Flash Remoting seemed the
perfect way to go. Having just acquired Flash CS3, I encountered
some difficulty since there is no Remoting Components package
available for CS3. I did however find this link and manage to get
my AS2.0 code to run:
http://blog.vixiom.com/2007/04/17/actionscript-20-flash-remoting-with-flash-cs3
This makes me worried about the future of Flash Remoting - I
don't want to purchase and then be locked into a technology that
gets shelved or overlooked by Adobe. I am aware of the AMFPHP
toolkit but this since we are going with .NET this is not
appropriate. Does anyone else have the same fears or does anyone at
Adobe have any information on what the future of Flash Remoting
will be?
Thanks guys

Sorry it took me a few days to get this up but here you go.
ActionScript 2.0 Remoting Coponents and Debugger in Flash

4. Copy NetConnection Debugger.swf and Service Browser.swf
from or WindowSWF folder.
C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\First Run\WindowSWF
To
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS3\en\First Run\WindowSWF
5. Copy the Libraries Folder.
C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\First Run
to
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS3\en\First Run
6. Copy Remoting and RPC Folders from your Program Files
location TO FLASH CS3 LOCATION.
C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\First Run\Classes\mx
To
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS3\en\First
Run\Classes\mx
7. Copy the RemotingConnector.swc from.
C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Flash 8\en\First
Run\Components\Data Components
to
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash

This will allow you to use the Remoting component in Flash
cs3 just as you did in Flash 8. You will still need to use them in
Action Script 2.0 Files.

  • The Future of Flash

In light of the recent announcement of continued support and upgrades for Flash, I've been thinking more about the future of Flash in the new HTML 5 oriented climate, with more browsers shunning the use of Flash, particularly on the mobile platforms.
Now, I do think that HTML 5 is a good step forward, and it certainly should replace Flash for video content, especially considering that Flash only really dominated that space because of the lack of better support through HTML in the first place. However, on the other hand I also see Flash as a potential champion of these new technologies, as it has very mature support, and (if we ignore uncertain plugin support), it's still a great platform for games, animations, and cross-platform apps.
The way I see it though is that Flash has essentially two core technologies. The first is ActionScript, which I don't believe would be hard at all (certainly not for Adobe) to repurpose as a language for writing Javascript. In fact, I'm under the impression that ActionScript has essentially been an extension of Javascript anyway, so a lot of these capabilities may already be in place, which means a lot of the ActionScript APIs need not be hard to port at all.
Second is the vector graphics capabilities. Now, I expect these would be a bit more difficult to port into an HTML 5 setting, but with ever improving Javascript performance it seems possible that a set of Flash vector libraries could be created that can run directly in the browser, without requiring a plugin. Combined with the current editor for making it easy to build vector content, I think that such a capability would become very popular.
To me this would seem an ideal future for Flash, as it would position the Flash editor as a great way to develop games and animations for the HTML 5 web, and allow Flash Builder to continue to be used for ever more complex apps drawing on the capabilities of Flash and Flex. After all, Adobe's money comes from the Flash and Flash Builder, rather than the plugins and players. As a result it seems like eliminating these in favour of a set of HTML 5 Flash libraries would be a really great way to allow the wealth of existing content to go forward, and to keep new developers interested, as it would eliminate the uncertainty at the future of Flash.
Forgive me if this has already been discussed at length; I did try a search but couldn't find anything that seemed similar. But while I'm not a Flash fanatic, I think there is a clear, and strong position for Flash in the HTML 5 web, without the need to try and compete.

    Hi,
Why don't you go at the FWA website, you will have a glimpse, just a glimpse, of the irrelevance of your question (I don't mean to be rude here).

  • The future of Flash and Actionscript 3.0, need your advise

Hello friends, currently I'm learning Actionscript 3.0, but have been reading a lot about Adobe disscontinuing Flash in the near future in support of HTML 5. Now, what I want to know is this: should I continue my education in AS3.0, or am I wasting my time?
If I am wasting my time, what language should I learn that will give me the ability to make robust websites? Java???
And is the "Flash" program gonna be completely obsolete? I'm somewhat confused on this subject and want to work effeciently.
Please, need advise from someone who really knows, so that I can continue my education in the right path.
Recommendations to links, books, videos would be greatly appreciated that you might think can help me in this matter.
    Thank you friends:)

You should list all of the sources you're indicating you have been reading so that anyone can have a better idea of the potential validity of what you say you are reading.
As far as AS3 goes, you should continue your studies... there is a future despite the fact that AS3 will probably be replaced with AS4 and on as time go by.  And if web design is in your future you should follow on with learning all you can relevant to html5/javascript/css so that you have the skills needed for those as well.
Here's s link to something from the folks who know better than anyone that might help you get a flavor of the plans with respect to Flash/AS3+...

  • About the future of flash

Guys i take my foot towards flash but some people tell me that flash will die after the release of HTML5 and css3 and javascript  is that true?????

Resolving the specs for these new things has been and will continue to be slow going... nothing to worry about in the near term.
For Flash to die it has to be replaced by something as useable as it.  Alot of folks that fight against Flash do so blindly, thinking it is only useful for making images appear and disappear on web pages.  Whenever someone describes what will replace Flash, a list of things have to be grouped together.  The combination of all the things needed to make that happen (and probably still come up short of Flash's potential) will challenge even the most talented of web designers... so even if the technologies combined can equate to a Flash solution in every design scenario, I doubt you'll find that many folks willing to figure out (aka: learn) all the pieces of that puzzle.  There'll be a new wave of downloadable plug-ins that no one can understand or modify... likely leading to the eventual creation of something that starts resembling Flash more and more each year.

  • What is the future of Flash CC and SWF format for 2D animation?

My work heavily relies on Flash for 2D animation then import SWF's into AE for comping. Since I do frame by frame animation and very little tweening, SWF saved my life numerous times because of it's file size, continous rasterisation and ease of use. Although being buggy in places and Fash not seeing any of that recent AE love, it's still a key tool for me.
So are there any plans to clean that bad boy up?

If you are having a problem it is not clear what it is from what you have said.  If you have sugestions for improving some shortcomings you see in Flash CC then you should submit them to:

  • Advice on using Flash in the future for Android VS. Air VS. Web Development

First, I am not trolling and I see that other similar questions have been asked recently, though I am looking for specific info to meet the needs of our program (that is why I am posting this now).
We've been teaching Flash at a community college for many years. After Adobe stopped development of the Flash Player for browsers, I'm left wondering what the future of Flash in the web will be? Data shows that a majority of web browsing will take place from mobile devices over the next several years, and if you are not going to be able to view Flash web content in a browser from a mobile device, I am concerned about whether it makes sense to continue teaching Flash to students for web design/development. I know Flash can also be used for developing applications, Air, etc., and we do some of that currently, I'm just wondering how Adobe can expect developers to commit to the platform for web development without supporting mobile web browsers. Am I missing something? Do developers see this differently? I appreciate any insight from Flash developers or Adobe employees. FYI - I just did a similar analysis with our video editing program and asked similar questions in an Apple Final Cut Pro forum and we are moving away from Apple's Final Cut Pro after they changed direction with their latest release and we are now going to start teaching Adobe Premiere. Should we focus teaching Flash for Android and Air development and back off from using it for web development?
    Thanks in advance.

I'd like an answer for this one too.  Thank you, "Media Kat" for posting the question.  I am a prototyper with a background in art and design, who has worked exclusively with Flash for nearly 13 years.  I'm currently working with AIR for Android, but my superiors and associates think AIR is going to die (along with the rest of Flash) and don't understand that simply "switching to HTML5" is not a very palatable answer.  It would be helpful to hear from someone "in the know" about the future of Flash.
    Thanks.
P.S.  If someone from Adobe answers this, please don't BS me like they did at the last forum I attended at Adobe headquarters in San Jose.  We asked specifically if Flash and/oir Flex were dying and were assured that they had a long future... Three weeks before the announcement to kill it!  :-(

  • Flash Remoting on WebLogic App Server

    Hi!
Ok, I have an application on my location machine that works
great; no problems. I created a .WAR file of this application and
installed it on a BEA WebLogic server. Everything works BUT the
flash remoting. I tried numerous things, including uncommenting the
servlet tags in my web.xml file, but nothing has worked. According
to CF Administrator that is running on the WB server, Flash
Remoting is enabled. The problem is the page will load but when you
click the "Search" button, nothing is returned; the little clock
    just spins and spins.
I tested the flash remoting with a simple app that I found
referenced on these forums, that code is attached. This worked well
on my local machine but not on the WebLogic server.
Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Jennifer

  • Future of Flash

I wish to initiate a discussion about the future of Flash.  If anyone knows of any relevant discussions that have already been posted please let me know.  I found the discussion initiated by
FritzPablo entitled “html5 animation: Flash CC vs. Edge Animate?.”  It was helpful but didn’t address my central question, which is how to respond to the decreased popularity of Flash.
Let me explain why this is so important to me.  I am a professor of genetics and embryology, not a graphics designer.  I learned Flash and used it to develop an extensive series of animated lessons.  I submitted these for publication, but publishers are reluctant to invest in a technology that may go the way of Word Star.  To investigate the problem I attended the recent Adobe MAX meeting.  My conclusion was that Adobe is focused on transitioning from Flash to Edge, not on supporting Flash.  Although they have bolstered Edge substantially, it still does not meet my needs.  For instance, it does not shape tween, which is critical to 90% of what I do.  One speaker suggested that I compose shape tweens with Flash and import them into Edge.  That may be an answer but I foresee multiple problems.  For instance, would users still need the Flash player to run the animations?  I wouldn’t want to devote a year or two to convert my work, if it will become obsolete a year or two thereafter.
So that’s my question, what’s the best strategy for converting and/or salvaging Flash animations.  Should we commit to Edge and hope future upgrades to HTML will incorporate advanced
features like shape tweening?  Are there programs that will run SWFs without the Flash reader?  Are there other programs that meet the need?  Any advice that anyone can provide will be
    greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
In addition to what Ned suggested above, If you prefer to output to HTML format, there exists a new document type HTML5 Canvas with-in Flash Professional CC using which you can publish. You can as well convert your existing AS3 files into Canvas document type using Commands>'Convert to HTML5 Canvas from AS3 document formats' menu.
You can obtain more information at Flash Professional Help | Creating and publishing an HTML5 Canvas document
Also Flash Professional CC is in active development and you can gain more information by attending an upcoming Live Webinar (Flash CC: The Future of Animation). You can register for this webinar by clicking on the display that appears at the bottom right corner of your welcome screen(one that appears as soon as you launch Flash Professional CC)

  • Is Extension Builder 2.1 using Flash compatible with Photoshop CC also in the future? (There are speculations, that it will be switched off, what will destroy my investment in that code)

I have codes a lot of stuff using Extension Builder 2.1 using Flash technology to be compatible with Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC.
There are speculations, that the support for this would be removed in Photoshop CC. This would destroy my investment in this code and my customers would not be able to use my products anymore, when they are using Photoshop CC.
Is there any workaround planed for customers using Photoshop CC to be able to run extension build with Extension Builder 2.1 and Flashbuilder 2.6 also in the future?

    Can you supply a link?

  • Can the flash storage hard drives in the brand new 15inch Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops (10.22.13) be upgraded/replaced in the future?

Can the flash storage hard drives in the brand new Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops that were just released a few days ago (10.22.13) be upgraded/replaced in the future?  I will need more than the basic 256GB for sample libraries using music software, among other things, but currently larger flash drives from Apple are too expensive.  I ask because I'm in the process of buying one of the new 15inch Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops right now (or at least right after I get an answer to this question).
I saw in the Mac store when I started looking at the build options for ordering the Macbook Pro that under Memory it said the memory was built into the computer and therefore could not ever be replaced or upgraded in the future.  So I was wondering if something similiar might be the case with the flash storage drives even though the same wasn't written under the hard drive options?  If these flash drives can be replaced in the future then I would just purchase the starting 256GB drive and suffer through using connected external hard drives, as unwieldy as that would be, until there were potential replacement flash drives with larger storage capacties available on the market or through Apple for more reasonable prices.  But if the hard drives in these laptops can't be replaced/upgraded I would go for the 500GB drive option (even though paying an additional $300, before taxes, for just 244GBs more storage space is absolutely outrageous no matter how great flash drives are with their read/write speeds, no moving parts to break, and lighter weight/thinner builds allowing for an overall thinner laptop).  I would even go for the larger 1TB option, which is really what I need, except that costs an additional $700 which is more than enough to buy me a new 50inch, HD, flatscreen TV from a reputable brand if I were so inclined!  (And yes, I understand the youth of the technology, current limits to flash drive capacities, and the reason for the high prices.  I know I'm not getting bilked...)
So yeah, does anybody have an answer to this question?  Can the flash hard drives in the new Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops, just released, be upgraded/replaced in the future?  Any answers are greatly appreciated and will save me some much needed cash on my purchase of one of these laptops!  And I should also ask, if so, can they be replaced by the laptop owner with the normal toolset through the normal, easily done methods of hard drive replacement in laptops that has been common, or would I have to bring the laptop to a Apple technician?
    Thanks everybody!

The modules are proprietary. They are installed in a slot secured with a tiny screw.
macsales.com has been working on providing aftermarket modules for the older models that were on the SATA Bus.
These newer ones are likley directly on the PCIe Bus. That will take some time to develop.

  • Flash Remoting Works Locally But Not On The Server

    Hello,
I have a flash file that connects to an asp.net page. The
aspx page queries a databse and returns a set of records to flash.
Flash reads in those records and processes those records. Locally,
this works fine. However, on the server, nothing happends. I spoke
with tech support at hosting company and they tell me everything is
    installed for Flash Remoting.
Here is the code thats on the server:
    import mx.remoting.NetServices;
    import mx.remoting.NetDebug;
    mx.remoting.debug.NetDebug.initialize();
    //CONSTRUCTOR

    NetServices.setDefaultGatewayUrl("

    gatewayConn.setDebugID( "Gateway Connection" );

    SQLQueryToolService.test("SELECT * FROM flashImages");
    function test_Result(result){

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem. My remoting application
works fine on my laptop as long
as the url for the gateway reads
    http://localhost/remotingData/gateway.aspx,
    but if I change
it to the name of my machine and attempt to run the swf I
keep getting a NetConnection.call.badversion error in the
netconnection debugger. If I attempt to connect through IE it just
    sits with no reply.

  • The future of Adobe Flash Professional?

    Dear Ms/Mrs!
I have a question concerning the future of Adobe Flash Professional, in the light of Adobe Edge Animate - Is Edge Animate intended to become a replacement for Flash Professional? (i.e. is it going to replace Flash Professional?)

Well, I was really wondering about it. I hope you release it soon. Thanks for your great work!

  • The future of p2p and Stratus

    Hello
I was digging around in all the docs and infos found on the net about p2p and Stratus even listened to Matthew Kaufman's talk about p2p.
I read that p2p will be included to FMS also available with LCCS also in the future flash players p2p will be included and also possible over LAN without a server.
My question is that will there always be a free Stratus like service provided by adobe or any other method to connect flash players from remote locations together with or without a server. And as I understand connecting flash players from remote locations together with p2p can't be done without Adobe interaction or buying Adobe developed software. Am I right?
    Thanks

Here's another very good set of questions I'd like to see addressed by Adobe.

  • Flash Remoting on local development box

I really hope someone can help with this. I've googled to
death for two days and can't find anything. I'm at my wits end.
I've installed CF8 on Windows XP Pro on IIS5.1 with multiple sites.
I'm also using Flex 3. I'm trying to get a simple helloworld app to
work using flash remoting with a cfc. When I run it, in the error
dialog, I get this error among others:
    [RPC Fault faultString="Send failed"
    faultCode="Client.Error.MessageSend"
    faultDetail="Channel.Connect.Failed error
    NetConnection.Call.Failed: HTTP: Failed: url: '
    http://localhost/flex2gateway/'"
    I've tried to connect to
    http://localhost/flex2gateway/
through the browser and I get a page cannot be found message. Note
that I had to change the root directory in IIS to point to my new
site, so it's not the default site any longer. If I change it back
to the default, I can find this file. I can't figure out for the
life of me how to get that url to work in the new site? Surely
someone else has multiple sites and knows how to solve this?
    Thanks!
    Holli

Hallefrickinglujah! I finally got it to work. I'm going to
post the answer here to help someone in the future. For sites you
create AFTER you install CF8, you have to create the JRunScripts
virtual directory as described in this article:
    http://www.frenches.com/blog/index.cfm/2007/5/7/Flex-Coldfusion--Dont-make-me-have-to-sepa rate-you-two
Just make sure that after you create it, you go into IIS and
give execute permissions to Scripts and Executables - It's a drop
down in the properties dialog of the virtual directory. Good
    luck!
