What is the best and reasonably priced external cd/dvd optical drive for an Imac 21.5 inches from late 2009?

A lot of people have a Mac where the superdrive has been taken out to be replaced with a harddisk. Try to find a friend who has done that, give him a beer and take the superdrive, then buy a superdrive container from OWC or another for  afew dollars and put it in there. This slimdrive container has a USB connector. There you go.

Ive got a budget of around £100 to spend and have been looking at a lacie dvd+16x light scribe 4.7gb/8.5gb with fire wire. Any idea if there any good?

  • Looking to upgrade to Leopard...possible with an external CD/DVD rom drive?

I bought my MacBook in May 2006, and after my AppleCare had expired, my optical drive would randomly decide whether or not it would eject the disks I would feed it. Before it started acting up, I purchased Leopard and installed it right after it came out last year. Since a lot of third party programs were not compatible with Leopard immediately, I thought I would revert back to Tiger and wait it out a bit until programs were updated to be compatible with Leopard.
In the meantime, I bought an external DVD/CD drive for $70 (Kanguru U2-DVDRW-20LS ... http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...o... ) because I didn't want to pay the $300-$400 it would cost to get my optical drive repaired. It works fine, several times a year I do a clean wipe re-install and it works just great when installing the backup disks that came with my computer initially (Tiger). When I go to install Leopard though, it won't allow me to did it. I was thinking it may have to do something with the drivers for the actual external hard drive..but I can't find any on the Kanguru website...can anyone give me any guidance? I'm pretty clueless with all of this. Thanks in advance!!
*Short version: I want to know how to get Leopard on my 2006 MacBook (which previously ran Tiger) with the Kanguru U2-DVDRW-20LS external DVD/CD drive instead of my optical drive (since it is broken).*

If the ext DVD/CD burner can read dual-layer DVDs, then you should be able to install via it. We do that with my mate's 17" iMac whose superdrive refuses to read DVDs. However, that's with a LaCie external burner. I don't know the Kanguru model.

  • External cd dvd burner drive

Yes, you can use an External CD drive on your Mac. Yes, Windows will also recognize the same external drive. I use an External FireWire DVD burner because it is faster than the iMac's internal slot load drive. You can also use the external CD/DVD drive to install Windows using Boot Camp, as noted in the Boot Camp Assistant instructions.

  • External alternative to Combo drive

My 2006 MacBook's combo drive has finally failed; it won't read any CD or DVD let alone burn a CD. The cheapest option would be a USB external drive to read/burn etc but would this be capable of installing software, or heaven forbid, re-installing Mac OS?
    Any advice gratefully received!
    Mike

Yes, as long as it's a bootable device which most are (but not all.) You might consider visiting ifixit.com and look into what it would cost to purchase a replacement for the existing drive and a tutorial on how to replace it. You can also check at macsales.com for similar replacements and tutorials.

  • Need help with installing my Pioneer external USB DVD/CD drive into G4

Recently I bought the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home and Student Edition DVD-ROM on my Dad's birthday for his G4 (OX Tiger), only to be reminded that the G4 only has a CD/RW drive! So I surfed amazon.com and got a Pioneer External USB 2.0 DVD/CD writer for dad, since all the customer reviews said the writer works on both PCs and Macs. But when my dad plugged the DVD writer into his G4, the Mac is not recognizing the writer. Anybody has any idea what is going on? Is there anything my dad can do? Many thanks!

    Allen,
It's unlikely that anyone would have exact information about this. I have a 1.33 12" taken apart but no 1.07. However looking at the exploded views the LVDS cable is:
    "LVDS Cable
    922-6368
    922-6432 (SS)"
For both the 1.33 and the 1.07 14"ers
That's even tho' the LCD panels are different designations.
    Email me for more info.

  • External CD/DVD-RW Drive? Any suggestions to replace my broken internal dr?

Like so many of us, my cheap SuperDrive died in my Early 2006 20" iMac. Instead of spending the $$ to replace the internal drive, I am considering instead switching to an external drive to replace it. That way I save on a ton of labor to replace the internal drive.
I burn some DVDs...and am looking for a good, reliable, proven external drive.
Any suggestions? This board is always so good about this kind of stuff...
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Can I remove the drive door on my new combo drive?

I bought a Lite-On dvd combo drive. The drive door (face place? Whatever it is called) is not flat like the dvd drive it replaced. Consequently, I can't get the drive door bezel back on my sawtooth. The drive works fine. It is strictly an aesthetic consideration.
I could pry at it until it snaps off, but before I take the cave man approach, I was wondering if a better way was known. Suggestions?
    Powermac G4 500 AGP   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.2 ghz OWC G4 upgrade; 500 mb RAM; 100 gig HD

No, you can't. The only way to get a larger capacity would be to sell your iPhone and purchase a new one.
    Regards.

  • My macbook pro won't read dvds from my external cd/dvd drive.

I have a new macbook pro 13 that I got for Christmas. I purchased a external cd/dvd usb drive so that I can watch movies on my mac since it doesn't have a dvd drive built-in. I put my dvd into the drive, and all my mac does is open a fiel that has the video and audio seperated. I tried clicking on the video file to see if I can watch it, but the computer has no software to read it, apparently. I don't know if this is a software thing or if it's my drive.

First, try one of the DVD drive cleaning kits that are available.

  • Using iDVD 6 with an external burner and hard drive

Last year I bought a 12" iBook which, of course, didn't come with a Superdrive. It also came with a 40 gig hard drive.
I'm down to 10 gigs but have an external drive with plenty of space on it.
I just recently bought a camcorder and due to the lack of a superdrive I've been using a very mediocre third party app on my Windows laptop to create DVDs.
I would like to use iMovie and iDVD to create my DVDs and am wondering if it is possible to daisy chain an external firewire hd and an external firewire DVD burner to accomplish this?
Alternatively, how much below 10 gigs can I go on my internal drive before I start running into virtual memory problems as some of these projects get kinda of large.

I have a setup similar to the one you are
contemplating: IBook with external LaCie DVD burner
and a LaCie external HDD connected to that.......
Note: do not burn directly from iDVD with this setup.
Instead use iDVD's "Save as Disc Image" option (File
    Save as Disk image).
    hope this helps
    mish
I'm guessing you haven't been able to do a DL disc image either. (Assuming you've tried.)

  • Which external firewire DVD burner?

Whci external firewire DVD burners work best with the iMac G5?
Are there any external firewire DVD burners that do NOT work with an iMac G5?
    Thanks for any info.

I have not seen a list, but on the iDVD page, it tells that it is now compatible with third-party DVD burners. I assume that any Mac-compatible exernal burner is now supported.
There is a discussion in the iDVD forum and another here that give a few that users have installed and had work with iDVD '06.
If I was in the market for a burner, I would get one with LightScribe. A friend of mine has one for his PC and it makes very nice labels. They really are "silkscreen-quality" as they advertise. As far as I know, LaCie is the only one who makes a Mac-compatible LightScribe DVD burner.

  • Possibility of ipad using external dvd/cd drive.

Will either gen of the ipad be able to use an external cd/dvd drive? And if so what brand?

Because Apple didn't include that functionality in either iPad. They don't have USB ports. They don't allow, as I understand it for the installation of the drivers that would be required.

  • Problems with External CD-DVD drive

I have an iMac G4 running OSX 10.4.11 and a SONY DRX-830UL-T external CD/DVD RW drive. I have been able to use this drive for reading CDs and DVDs and burning CDs in the past, but now I am unable to use the drive at all. The drive does turn on and off and I can hear the CD spin when I put it in there. Here is what I have done so far:
    1. Checked Disk Utility. The drive does not show up there.
    2. Checked System Profiler. The drive is connected by Firewire, but System Profiler only shows an unknown device under Firewire.
    3. Reconnected drive using USB. Nothing changed.
    4. Disconnected and Reconnected the drive.
    5. Rebooted.
    6. Rebooted and reset PRAM (CmdOption+PR).
    7. Downloaded PatchBurn (which I had used before). Patchburn doesn't display the external drive.
At this point, I'm stuck. I don't think that the drive is bad, although I will check that out. I would appreciate any advice or help I could get on this. Thanks!

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I find Most Opticals to be far shorter lived than I would hope.
Does the FW port see other devices fine?
Do you know anybody with a Mac that you could try it on to eliminate any other cause?
