The Neverending VirtualBox + USB Story

Like many people, I'm having challenges getting USB, specifically my USB mouse (Logitech M305 wireless) to work in VirtualBox.
My setup: Dell E6320 laptop. I have a WinXP VM that was previously used with VMware Player. I am now booting the vmdk file with VirtualBox. The VM seems to boot fine. The following vbox packages installed:
$ pacman -Q|grep -i virtualbox
virtualbox 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-ext-oracle 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-ext-vnc 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-guest-dkms 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-guest-iso 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-guest-modules 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-guest-modules-lts 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-guest-utils 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-host-dkms 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-host-modules 4.2.8-1
virtualbox-host-modules-lts 4.2.8-1
$
The vboxdvr module is being loaded at boot time and I am a member of the vboxusers group. I have rebooted and confirmed these settings.
If I start VirtualBox with "VBOX_USB=usbfs" as suggested in the wiki article then:
Trying to access the VM's settings gets me the following error:
I get that error whether EHCI is enabled or not.
The VM boots fine, but no USB devices show up under Devices -> USB Devices.
Unsetting VBOX_USB eliminates the error above, and all my USB devices show up under Devices -> USB Devices but actually attaching the mouse's transceiver (Devices->USB Devices->) does not work as desired: When I click the mouse inside the VM window, the mouse pointer is successfully captured and the capture icon indicates this. But the mouse pointer will not move. Likewise for the touchpad and the DualPoint stick. No mouse activity at all.
Also, with the mouse captured, hitting CTRL+ALT_DEL to log into the XP VM just releases the mouse as if I had hit the right CTRL button instead.
I've read a bunch of previous posts on this, read the wiki articles, but nothing seems to be working for me. I'm still looking but if anyone has other ideas, I'd appreciate the help. VMware Player is no longer free for commercial use so I am trying to switch to VirtualBox.

Um, would you care to explain where this came from and by what licence you have the right to use this "XP appliance of sorts"?  Without that information, I, or one of my fellow moderators, will be shutting down this thread.
Our policy
Wow. Well, first I don't owe you an explanation for "where this came from and by what license I have a right to use [it]". Do you work for Microsoft? Are you my sales rep? Are you some sort of special authority charged with policing Microsoft licensing? This is the single weirdest response I've ever gotten on any forum, icq channel, support channel etc.
Nonetheless, I work for a major insurance company which has all the necessary licensing. The rest is none of your business. This "appliance of sorts" is simply one of our corporate standard builds of a Windows desktop in VM form so provided to those of us who don't run Windows as our primary OS which I am in the process of trying to get to run under vbox because VMware has made VMware Player free only for non-commercial use. You know, making sure we're on the right side of the law and all with licensing.
I might suggest a different choice of language next time you feel the need to inquire. Perhaps some simple like "Can you please confirm for us here that you are properly licensed to run this software? Thanks."
I do appreciate the help though. I've almost got this thing working.

  • Unable to open the file in USB

I stored many files in a USB drive many months ago.
I tried to open the files in USB, but found that all the files become 1 file called ''ReadyBoost''. It has 1.6M KB. I tried to open the "ReadyBoost" file but cannot.
I used some USB recovery software on the USB. It able to scan that there are many files inside the USB, i.e. not deleted but seems hidden somewhere in USB.
I tried some cmd command like áttributes -s -h /s /h but still cannot locate the files.
    What should I do?

    Hi,
Did you turn ReadyBoost on the USB? It is designed to help when your PC's memory is running low. ReadyBoost can create a cache file named ReadyBoost.sfcache in the root of the a flash drive. so that's why you see ''ReadyBoost'' in USB. Did you format the
usb and use it for readyboost?
    you can see this link

    Hello,
I have been attempting to connect a Mustek A3 usb 1200 scanner to a macbook 2.0
I have tried downloading installing/packages from this site...(in order)
    1.0 http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/
but alas the scanner still doesn't function.
2.0 The Sys Profiler, reads it,
3.0 The "A3 1200 USB" option appears when in Photoshop for import still no results
4.0 Silverfast seems to want to read it, but its unregistered...need registration number, copy(?)
5.0 HPScan Pro doesn't read it (different Brand, I know)
6.0 Vue scan 8.5 (registered) doesn't read it either
7.0 Lastly I am attempting to load PC P-shop on Boot camp (XP) to scan, the free Text recognition software can use it in XP via Boot camp, but doesn't read the image as an "image" need a an edit image program for that...hence incoming p-shop
8.0 What about Image capture, how would I set the App to use the scanner?
    Any other suggestions?
    Message was edited by: Maczbook

I can now see it in Image Aquire ... image capture does not see it nor does VueScan.
Image aquire is a horrible program. It crashes continually.
I still have no idea where the driver files that I have downloaded are. I cant find them anywhere. Admittedly I know very very little about how the computer runs ...I just use the programs. And, I believe reasonably, that when I purchase a product that it will work on my operating system. The business that I purchased from will be open tomorrow and I will ring them. If I cannot sort this out I will have to return it.

  • Taken to the Ombudsman Service - My story with BT

    6 months with BT:
We purchased our BT package; broadband, phone, and vision in January 2011, after we had moved house,and previously were with Virgin Media.
Upon purchasing our package we were informed by an advisor that we would be offered the Large broadbandpackage, and 3 months half price for our whole package, to 'entice' us in. Our contract came through, andunfortunately didn't show the information the advisor had provided us. So I contacted BT and submitted acomplaint; I was later emailed by the lady who had first informed me of the 'deal' which she eventually sortedout over a few email's. (I put to the back of my mind, that the advisors grammar was appalling, and she used'I' rather than 'I', and was using some bizarre font's and colours in her email's).
I even contacted her manager, and provided positive feedback for ensuring that the situation was resolved. Atthis point, I was relatively happy with the Customer Service I received.
However, the positive feedback didn't last long - BT tried to debit £200 for a cancellation charge in February'sbill as the female advisor unpackaged my bundle, and didn't inform the relevant department of this. BT cutmy services during this time, as they thought I had cancelled my package. They apologised, and reinstatedthe services eventually.
On 25 January 2011 I was having some technical issues with our broadband and vision service, so contactedthe technical support department. I was struggling with the advisor as it was extremely hard to understandhim, and therefore asked questions a long the way to ensure I was doing everything correctly. The advisorseemed to get very frustrated and told me that I was 'stupid'. I immediately terminated the call and filed acomplaint. I received correspondence on 04 February 2011, to confirm that they were unable to trace mytelephone call, even though the Live Chat advisor confirmed the name and time that the call was made.
I was not happy with the response I received to my complaint, and later received an email to my work toapologise for the inconvenience. The Customer Care representative confirmed the way in which the advisorspoke to me was unacceptable, and offered us 1 months' free Vision 'films', and offered to refund mytelephone call charges. Again, although getting my complaint through was a struggle, I was happy with theresolution.
However, March's bill came through and I was charged £12 for my 'free films', a £7.50 disconnection fee, an£11 charge, and £25 worth of bank charges as my bill somehow managed to amount to £67.00. After manyemail's, between advisors who could not spell, and their English was really disappointing, I sent a letter toBT with 12 pages worth of correspondence.
I finally received a reply approximately 2 weeks ago, to confirm that my charges would be refunded off mynext bill; I was unhappy with this as I wanted the charges to be refunded to by bank account in order toindemnify me, as BT took me out of the financial position I was previously in, by erroneously charging meduring March 2011.
I had a lengthy telephone conversation with an advisor last week, after our services were disconnected, toconfirm that April's bill was reduced to £20.09 as they had refunded around £50 worth of charges. The advisorconfirmed that April's bill was originally going to be £75; they failed to break this down for me, which isunbelievable. I cannot see how BT can justify charging £75 for services that fail to provide what they say theydo.
I have now raised a complaint with the Ombudsman Service (OS) as BT have provided a complete shamblesof a service, both technically and with regard to Customer Service. I work in the Complaints Department foran Insurance Company; none of the above would be acceptable to us, let alone the way in which wecommunicate with our customers.
I have mentioned all of the above to the OS for them to consider, who will send a termination request to BT.It's unfortunate that the whole situation has come to this, but as a consumer I refuse to pay for a service thatI am not receiving. I am currently receiving a 1.8 Mbps Internet speed, whereas Virgin Media will provide5Mpbs in the same area/postcode/house number.
    Please see my story:

I will make sure to keep you updated:
I just took 3 minutes and 42 seconds to load up a webpage, to then get told there is 'limited connectivity'; it must be such hard work for BT to run Broadband and Vision at once ....
I'm not entirely sure why I am receiving the large internet package - for the purpose of using my PS3 online - as I cannot use it due to the poor connection.
Okay, so we'll do another speed test:
Wow - I'm not even sure what to say to this! I'm not even sure how I'm typing this with such a slow speed.
We'll go to another website now so we can get the 'average':
Other speeds in my area, Last updated: 11/06/2011 18:18:37, between 3.8Mbps - 20+Mbps.

  • Hi, im trying to download pictures from my camera but when I connect the lightning to usb camera adapter i get the message that there is too much energy required to support the device, can anyone help me?

Hi, I´m trying to use the lightning to usb camera adaper, but I get a message that ¨there is too much energy needed to support the device¨, so I can´t download my pictures, can anyone help me?

    This discussion may help.
It mostly depends on the camera. Some cameras have a Transfer Mode, which does not attempt to charge while transferring pictures. does yours have such a setting?
Alternatively you can try to plug a powered USB hub between the camera and the USB connector so the power is provided by the HUB rather than the iPad.
Other than that, yes the Memory card reader may be a better option assuming your Camera uses Secure Digital (SD) type memory cards.

  • What is the purpose of the 1394 and USB jacks on the 30" Cinema?

I have a 30" Cinema display connect to my (current-model) Mini via the Thunderbolt port and an Apple Dual-DVI adapter.
The back of the display has a pair of USB jacks and a pair of Firewire jacks, and the adapter has cable connections to match. What is the purpose of all these connections? I can tell you right now, it seems that nothing is coming or going through any of these paths. The Cinema display is working just fine but these miscellaneous connections aren't live as far as I can tell.
What would be great is if the FW tail on the adapter could be used as a second FW port for the Mini. Can that be made to work? Is there some way to route a FW signal to the Displayport?
TIA for any thoughts on this matter.

If I have to connect one  Cinema FW port to the sole FW port on the Mac Mini, that doesn't gain me any additional ports--it consumes one of two ports and leaves me a net of one open port--the same quantity I started with.
The display's FireWire cable (not one of the ports on the back of the display) connects to the computer's FireWire port (via a FW400 to FW800 adapter).  This uses up one computer FireWire port, but the display has two FireWire ports, so you gain one port.
It's the same for USB.  You lose one port of the computer but get two on the display.
BTW, your response implied that the Thunderbolt port "contains" both USB and FW connectivity. Can I simply tap off the FW and feed my external FW hard drive directly from the Thunderbolt port?
Thunderbolt doesn't include USB and FireWire directly.  Instead it includes a version of PCI.  Apple is making some simple Thunderbolt to FireWire or Internet adapters, but they have only one Thunderbolt connection, so if you used one, there would be no place to connect your 30" display.  (The HDMI port is limited to 1920 x 1200, so cannot drive a 30" display at full resolution.)
Belkin is coming out with an adapter that you could use, but it is not cheap.
