The optimum DVD authoring/rep/dupe for 100% of consumer playback success

I'm needing to know from the pros in here the best workflow for DVD creation. We're doing a national distribution of a DVD (5000 first press) and want to ensure that this DVD will play in all players as well as auto play in those players.
Or at least have a 95% success rate. I'm not sure what is "acceptable loss" when it comes to mass distribution.
Things like what software is used to author...what format is presented to the replication house...what kind/brand of DVDs are best used to replicate to...and so forth.
Any ideas which will lessen the odds of problems down the line from our customers?
Thanks in advance!

Hey David! Let me address your points here so you can get a better understanding of what we're doing:
+So I take it you have this; written/story boarded, shot, donuts, color corrected, edited, properly formated. blah blah and blah. And you ready to go to dvd.....+
You are correct. Like the thread title basically implicates, need help with playback success. Not creation of a master.
+So this dvd will be in all the; bookstores, Walmarts, Blockbusters, Starbucks so on and so on... Your going to need more than 5000 for a national distrubtion.+
Nope...this is a DVD that is distributed among all the sports centers in the country. We're an athletic/fitness company. I think I have good enough product knowledge of what we sell to know a quantity to forecast for first runs. All coffee houses and blue light specials can get their own DVD to sell. lol
+I would be happy with 25%. I could retired... Wait a sec I am retired.+
Not with us. No time to retire as well.
+Pay someone to author the dvd for you.+
We are paying someone else to do this for us. Money is not an issue and not a cheap hillbilly deal. It also doesn't hurt to be armed with a little knowledge and understanding of the process before embarking on that journey. Enter the discussion groups.
+Why on earth would you burn this to dvd. Have the dvd pressed.+
Didn't I say "pressed" in my posting? I don't know a lot about this, but I know enough to know that much. Success rate is very important.
+It might (and will) cost more for the software, dvds, dvd replicators, cases, printed inserts and headaches will probably cost you more than to hand over the material for the dvd to someone to build the dvd and then sending it to the replicators.+
You are correct. Again...we're not doing the job. A "Pro" lab will. Sounds like you assumed we were tackling the job from start to finish. But there are good and bad houses out there I'm sure (as with anything else you farm out these days) so a little understanding of what to ask these places of their methods/procedures might save ourselves some money and headaches down the road.
*Well, the same question goes folks...any more tips?*
Thanks for playing David! I appreciate your advice and tips..

I would appreciate it if someone could advise me as to the optimum resolution, dimensions and dpi for actual photographic slides that I am scanning for use in a Keynote Presentation, that will be projected in a large auditorium. I realize that most projectors in auditoriums that I will be using have 1024 x 1200 pixels, and possibly 1600 x 1200. There is no reference to this issue in the Keynote Tutorial supplied by Apple, and I have never found a definitive answer to this issue online (although there may be one).
Here’s my question: When scanning my photographic slides, what setting, from 72 dpi to 300 dpi, would result in the best image quality and use up the most efficient amount of space?
Here’s what two different photo slide scanning service suppliers have told me:
Supplier No. 1 tells me that they can scan slides to a size of 1544 x 1024 pixels, at 72 dpi, which will be 763 KB, and they refer to this as low resolution (a JPEG). However, I noticed when I looked at these scanned slides, the size of the slides varied, with a maximum of 1.8 MB. This supplier says that the dpi doesn’t matter when it comes to the quality of the final digital image, that it is the dimensions that matter.  They say that if they scanned a slide to a higher resolution (2048 x 3072), they would still scan it at 72 dpi.
Supplier No. 2: They tell me that in order to have a high quality image made from a photographic slide (starting with a 35 mm slide, in all cases), I need to have a “1280 pixel dimension slide, a JPEG, at 300 dpi, that is 8 MB per image.” However, this supplier also offers, on its list of services, a “Standard Resolution JPEG (4MB file/image – 3088 x 2048), as well as a “High Resolution JPEG (8 MB file/image – 3088x2048).
I will be presenting my Keynotes with my MacBook Pro, and will not have a chance to try out the presentations in advance, since the lecture location is far from my home, so that is not an option.
I do not want to use up more memory than necessary on my laptop.  I also want to have the best quality image.
One more question: When scanning images myself, on my own scanner, for my Keynote presentations, would I be better off scanning them as JPEGs or TIFFs? I have been told that a TIFF is better because it is less compressed.
Any enlightenment on this subject would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

When it comes to Keynote, I try and start with a presentation that's 1680 x 1050 preset or something in that range.  Most projectors that you'll get at a conference won't project much higher than that and if they run at a lower resolution, it's better to have the device downsize your Keynote.  Anything is better than having the projector try and upsize your presentation... you work hard to make it look good, and it's mangled by some tired Epson projector.
As far as slides go, scan them in at 150 dpi or better, and make them at least the dimensions of your presentation.  Keynote is really only wanting 72dpi, but I do them at 150, just in case I need to print out the presentation as a handout later, and having the pix at 150 dpi gives me a little help with their quality on a printer.
You'd probably have to drop in the 150 versions again if you output the Keynote to .pdf or Word or something, but at least you have the option.
And Gary's right (above) go ahead and scan them as TIFFs.  Sooner or later you'll want to do something else with these slides (like make something for an iPad or the like) and having them as TIFFs keeps your presentation looking good.
Finally, and this is a big one, get to the location for your presentation ahead of time if you can, and plug the laptop in and see what you get.  There's always connection problems. Don't let the AV bonehead tell you everything will work just fine ('... I don't have any adapters for a Mac...') .  See it for yourself... you're the one that's standing up there.  Unless it's your boss, then you better be really sure it works.

    Hi
How to disable the validity of a particular Role
which is assigned to 100 users. (disabling the role of change the validity of the role )
at present am doing manually, by entering into each user and changing the validity of the role
    Thanks.

    > How to disable the validity of a particular Role for 100 users, in a single ...
    ... shot?
Assign a reference user to the 100+ users and create events in the factory calendar which assigns and removes the role from the reference user only.
The downside is that it is not scalable for many of the same concepts at the same time, because a dialog user can at one logon time only have one reference user assigned to them.

    archive/upgrade/flat
    why? am i missing something?

I did not see any install options either.
I was watching very carefully, or so I thought.

  • What is the best DVD burner to buy for use with my Mac?

I have a MacMini with a DVD player/CD burner. I would like to buy an external DVD burner for use with the MacMini and my Tiger OS. Could I get some thoughts on purchasing a good external burner and using the best burning program with it. Thanks

    Paul,
    LaCie d2 DVD±RW with LightScribe http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10113
$179.99 includes full version Toast 7
    $129.99 includes Toast 6 Lite
The $129.99 unit that comes with Toast 6 Lite can be found on the web for a lot less. Later, if you outgrow Toast 6 you can upgrade to Toast 8 (which is the latest version).
    External Multi-Format DVD RecorderDRX-830UL/T $129.00

My experience with Lacie and Sony burners has always been positve and Toast is good to have around, it's always complimented iDVD well (in addition to having a host of other useful features).
    Note:
I'm not familiar with any of Toast 6 lite's features, but I do know you can burn DVD's with it. It adds another means of authoring a DVD outside of iDVD.

  • TS5376 Does uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes affect the number of authorized computers listed for my account? When I reinstall, is iTunes considering my computer a new authorized device even though it was installed before??

    Hello,
When trying to install the recent iTunes update, I got the Error Message "Program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer."  Apple's recommended solution involves the step of uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes on my laptop.  I'm concerned that when I reinstall, iTunes will think it's a new device and use up one of the 5 device authorizations the iTunes accounts allow.  Do I need to do anything in particular to prevent that?  If yes, what should I do?
    Thank you.
    Katya

Actually, I'd use the following user tip rather than the Apple document as a guide. (At the time I'm writing this reply, the user tip is much better organised, more accurate and way more up to date that the Apple document.)
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
In the normal course of events, and uninstall/reinstall doesn't affect your number of authorisations on a computer. Usually, it requires a serious hardware change (like a new hard drive or motherboard), or a BIOS update, or an upgrade to a different Windows operating system to confuse your iTunes and make it think that it is now installed on a different computer before you end up using extra authorisations for the same operating system for the same computer. (So if you ever have to do things like major hardware changes, or BIOS updates on the computer, deauthorise the PC first, and then reauthorise after the change has been carried out.)

  • What is the optimum number of CPU cores for Photoshop CC?

    The title is the question.

To reinforce what Chris has said, keep in mind there's only one processor package in the new Mac Pro.  There are cases where having two packages - such as in the previous design Mac Pro with dual Xeon x5600 series processors - can actually be a pretty big advantage.
That being said, I've put a lot of thought into how many cores a new Mac Pro ought to be configured with to run graphics software well, and I've come to the thought that 4 is too few and 12 is way too many.  I believe the 3.5 GHz 6 core E5-1650v2 may actually have a slight edge over the 8 core E5-2667v2, because with 12 logical Ivy Bridge processors cranking full-on (with Hyperthreading) the memory bandwidth is actually already going to be taxed.  And of course the 6 core is much cheaper.
There's a nice little Photoshop benchmark that's reasonably indicative of how well a system actually multithreads with Photoshop.  It can be found here:
    http://ksimonian.com/Blog/2010/02/24/improved-photoshop-benchmark-cpu-speed-test-for-both- mac-pc-free-radial-blur-filter-test/
I have a PC workstation with the same chipset as the pre-cylinder Mac Pro (dual Xeon x5690s in my case), and my best speed for that benchmark with Photoshop CC equals the best posted on that site:  8.3 seconds.  People are reporting the new Mac Pro is scoring with that benchmark in the same vicinity - but not really faster.
Do some research yourself and see what various folks with the new cylindrical Mac Pro are scoring on that benchmark.  I'd be interested to hear if your findings are like mine.
    What's your system score, Chris?

  • What is the Optimum Dimensions (Page size?) for an iwebsite?

    Dear iWeb Forum,
In 2006 I made a website using iweb. I never got around to really getting this site to where I want it to be. Now I have a bit of time and want to revamp it. I have tried to find answers to this question on other posts, but I couldn't turn anything up. Apologies if this has been answered before.
First I would like to know what dimensions (page size?)are best to use so that this website can be seen by the majority of regular-sized screens? (I mean those smaller than cinema-sized screens. I use an old 17" studio monitor and it is fine with this. But perhaps on smaller screens on computers at work (Windows) the bottom part is not visible and I have to scroll down to view this area.( I am trying to make a site where scrolling is not necessary). With this in mind what dimensions would constitute a kind of 'safe area' ?
I use iweb version 1.1.2 on OSX 10.4.6.
Here is the site as it stands now:
    http://web.mac.com/gregoryclements/
Any help with this would be fantastic.
    Best regards
    Greg

Most Web viewers do not mind scrolling down to view content. It's as easy as hitting the spacebar on most browsers and OS's.
More concern should be placed on page width and that is a bit trickier to decide.
My surveys show more than 70% of my visitors use 1024X768 (or higher) display resolution and less than 10% use 800X600 or less.
I believe that iWeb default is 700 pixels (could be wrong as I've only made one page with it).
Unless your page design layout requires a wider display I would use the default. If your page uses lots of text (Web safe fonts) then you could increase the page width (text will wrap) so that viewers don't have to scroll down.
Key factor would be remaining consistent between pages.

  • Chapter markers created in DVD Studio Pro pause for a second on playback.

I have been using the FCP suite for quite some time and we author a lot of DVD's in DVD Studio Pro. We produce many DVD's which require chapter breaks. My problem is that, when the DVD's we produce are played back, on most players the DVD will pause for a second or so on each chapter break/marker. Is there a way to get around this problem? The playback of the DVD's is fine, but the pauses at every chapter break/marker are annoying for us & our clients.

    Hi Nat
It sounds like you're setting each chapter marker to end jump to the next. This will cause the pause you describe - if you leave each chapter as 'not set' you should be able to play thru them no problem.
    Cheers

  • Can't install the second DVD applications - no set up icon

I have Creative Suites CS4 for Mac. First DVD installed perfectly. But the second DVD only has two folders, Extensions and Payloads, and no set up icon/function. I have contacted technical support and their solution was to send me a whole new set of DVDs, but it's still the same problem. Their other solutions did not work either. Help! How do I install my second set of applications on the Mac without the set-up icon?

    I have a MacBook MacOSX 10.5.8  - 2 GB memory.
I put in the first DVD and clicked setup for easy install. The applications that were listed on that DVD (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Acrobat) installed. When it finished installing, it said Thanks and ejected the disk. But I was still missing InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash. I then put in the second DVD. Nothing happened.
I called technical suppoirt and they were no help both times.
    Thanks for any help.

  • How to maintain price  for 100 units

Dear all i have question  , i want to give  pricing for  conditin records in vk 11 for condition type for PR00   and the price should be calculated like for 100 units
eg:  Material " X"     Price  is 700   for 100 units
how should i have to go and maintain in the condition records for 100 units  should i have to maintain scales ? if yes how should i have to go and maintain in scales ?
    Please guide me
    thanks

    Hi Kumi,
I agree with the above solution but if there is some restriction in the business like if the customer buy 1 to 99 units then the price will be 8 per unit.
If customer buy 100 units then the price will be 7 per unit (7*100=700).
Then you can use scale in the situation.
    Hope it helps,
    Regards,
    MT

I was trying to burn a DVD from files in a burn folder. They were pictures from my Nikon camera. I can play videos and movies from the same dvd player.    Thanks for any help you can offer,

    Thanks for your reply:
I did find an error log related to the error code and tried all suggestions on the list of recommendations, still no luck
I definitely am running OS X10.5.8 (hopefully will be updating later on this month)
I tried several brand new discs from the same box, still no luck.
My last option is to go out and try a different brand, guess I'll go with Verbatim this time but I think I'll poke around some more before buying 20 more new discs.

  • I have invested over 6 hours on the phone and with my Verizon Authorized Rep. trying to get the Bonus 1 Gig of Data for myself on the More Plus Plan.  Cut and dry situation but today was told I have to wait about 7 days until they can get me "an answer" o

Basic question is why are any of the minimun 8 Verizon reps that I or my Authorized Verizon Rep (at Costco) spoke with unable to resolve a very simple, straightforward issue that should have been resolved in 15 minutes max.  Instead I (a 14 year verizon customer) have been given the runaround and have invested over 6 1/2 hours in trying to get someone to acknowledge that I an owed 1 GB of Bonus Data on my new phone on our new plan.  My wife got hers.  I am just venting now as I intend on returning the phone tomorrow (I got it Thursday) and turning around and getting an identical new phone.  This was suggested to me as an option by both the Rep who sold my wife her phone and the rep who sold me mine as that way I would not have to contiinue dealing with this ridiculous state of affairs (they indicated that my Free gig request was being sent to another department and that it would be about 7 days befor they get an answer).   Just Venting  .  Thanks

No I was considerate, etc.  The root of the problem stems from the fact that when I went to get my new phone I asked the salesperson if I should sign up for the new plan or if my wife should do it the following day when she buys her new phone (also at a Costco but in a different state).  The salesperson said it made absolutely no difference so I elected to have my wife do it.  When she did the next day she got her free Gig and her salesperson told her that I need to call in to make sure I get the gig that I am entitled to as well.  That's when the runaround started with the first call  consisting of me basically advising Verizon of what the promotion consists of, etc.since they insisted that it was one gig per Plan, that there were no exceptions to this, etc.  As mentioned they wanted to know where I got the information that it was one gig per qualifying phone. (Both the rep and her supervisor obviously were not aware of how Verizons heavily touted More Everything plan works). They told me finally that I needed to go back to the Costco where I got the phone.  I did.  The salesperson apologized numerous times to me for advising me that it made no difference who signs up for the plan or when.  She then spent over two hours on the phone (with me next to her) attempting to explain to Verizon what happened, how it was her fault, and how I was clearly entitled to the Bonus Gig since I also had a qualifying phone.  Finally she was transferred to someone who authorized the Bonus Gig (since I was clearly entitled to it) and who indicated that it might take 24 hours to show up on my new Plan.  72 hours later, no change, and the runaround continues some more.  The only reason I even came to this forum was to let off some steam since no one could give me an answer..  It's clear that I am entitled to the Bonus Gig yet the last supervisor I spoke with told me that he could only pass the request on to another department via e-mail (no direct contact, etc. even though I gave him the name and employee # of the Verizon rep who indicated the Bonus was approved) and that an answer should be forthcoming in about 7 days.  I was very cordial with everyone I spoke with as I understand that they take their direction from the top.  The countless hours I have spent dealing with this situation is something that no-one should have to go through, particularily someone who has been a Verizon Plan customer since about year 2000.  Everyone seems to agree that I am entitled to the free gig but no one seems to be in a position to help this customer.  Its a horrible way to treat someone.  I talked with the original saleslady today and told her I would be in tomorrow to turn in the phone and get a new one along with the gig I was entitled to.  She said that would be fine and wouldn't be a problem but that she would be happy to try calling Verizon once again to try to resolve the issue.  I indicated that I'm done with wasting time taliking with well-meaning and courteous (and I assume underpaid) employees who I assume are pretty much directed from above that any concessions they make, even if the customer is entitled to them, will reflect badly on their employee evaluations .  Good thing I am retired or I would really be worked up.  They only way I would consider even talking to Verizon anymore on this is if they were to waive  the $60 in upgrade fees my wife and I paid for the new phones.  I hope this explains the situation to your satisfaction.  Thanks.
