The performance of synchronous scenarios?

Hi gurus,
We are planing to implement the integration between SAP and WMS(Warehouse management system) . The customer wants all the scenarios (Purchase Order, goods received,...) to be synchronous. Although it's good from the functional point, I think the performance may be not good.
We also need to consider the timeout isssue. For example, when the network is down or the application data is wrong, then the sender system will wait a  long time or received the cause of wrong application data. If the application data is wrong, whether we should allow user to save the data in sender system? If not, they will cry if no solutions found in short time. If yes, it will cause the inconsistent data in two systems.
What do you think about this? Is the performance bad according to your experience? How to deal with the wrong application data case? Any help will be appreciated!

What are your end system protocols....if you are planning to use IDOC then SYNC Communication is not supported.
If the application data is wrong, whether we should allow user to save the data in sender system?
Better if an ACK mechanism is built which will indicate to the SAP system if the data is correct/ incorrect....If incorrect the SAP system can be configured to re-send the data.
I do not find it a good option that wrong application data is stored in the system.....if required for business analysis then fine you can archive the wrong data into some other location.
Is the performance bad according to your experience?
It depends on the volume of data that you will be transacting for a defined duration of time.
How to deal with the wrong application data case?
This is something which the business consultants have to decide.

  • SAP PI conceptual best practice for synchronous scenarios

    Hi,
<br /><br />Apologies for the length of this post but I'm sure this is an area most of you have thought about in your journey with SAP PI.
<br /><br />We have recently upgraded our SAP PI system from 7.0 to 7.1 and I'd like to document  best practice guidelines for our internal development team to follow.
I'd be grateful for any feedback related to my thoughts below which may help to consolidate my knowledge to date.
<br /><br />Prior to the upgrade we have implemented a number of synchronous and asynchronous scenarios using SAP PI as the hub at runtime using the Integration Directory configuration.
No interfaces to date are exposes directly from our backend systems using transaction SOAMANAGER.
<br /><br />Our asynchronous scenarios operate through the SAP PI hub at runtime which builds in resilience and harnesses the benefits of the queue-based approach.
<br /><br />My queries relate to the implementation of synchronous scenarios where there is no mapping or routing requirement.  Perhaps it's best that I outline my experience/thoughts on the 3 options and summarise my queries/concerns that people may be able to advise upon afterwards.
<br /><br />1) Use SAP PI Integration Directory.  I appreciate going through SAP PI at runtime is not necessary and adds latency to the process but the monitoring capability in transaction SXMB_MONI provide full access for audit purposes and we have implemented alerting running hourly so all process errors are raised and we handle accordingly.  In our SAP PI Production system we have a full record of sync messages recorded while these don't show in the backend system as we don't have propogation turned on.  When we first looked at this, the reduction in speed seemed to be outweighed by the quality of the monitoring/alerting given none of the processes are particularly intensive and don't require instant responses.  We have some inbound interfaces called by two sender systems so we have the overhead of maintaing the Integration Repository/Directory design/configuration twice for these systems but the nice thing is SXMB_MONI shows which system sent the message.  Extra work but seemingly for improved visibility of the process.  I'm not suggesting this is the correct long term approach but states where we are currently.
<br /><br />2) Use the Advanced Adapter Engine.  I've heard mixed reviews about this functionaslity, there areh obvious improvements in speed by avoiding the ABAP stack on the SAP PI server at runtime, but some people have complained about the lack of SXMB_MONI support.  I don't know if this is still the case as we're at SAP PI 7.1 EHP1 but I plan to test and evaluate once Basis have set up the pre-requisite RFC etc.
<br /><br />3) Use the backend system's SOAP runtime and SOAMANAGER.  Using this option I can still model inbound interfaces in SAP PI but expose these using transaction SOAMANAGER in the backend ABAP system.  [I would have tested out the direct P2P connection option but our backend systems are still at Netweaver 7.0 and this option is not supported until 7.1 so that's out for now.]  The clear benefits of exposing the service directly from the backend system is obviously performance which in some of our planned processes would be desirable.  My understanding is that the logging/tracing options in SOAMANAGER have to be switched on while you investigate so there is no automatic recording of interface detail for retrospective review.
    <br /><br />Queries:
<br /><br />I have the feeling that there is no clear cut answer to which of the options you select from above but the decision should be based upon the requirements.
<br /><br />I'm curious to understand SAPs intention with these options  -
<br /><br />- For synchronous scenarios is it assumed that the client should always handle errors therefore the lack of monitoring should be less of a concern and option 3 desirable when no mapping/routing is required?
<br /><br />- Not only does option 3 offer the best performance, but the generated WSDL is ready once built for any further system to implement thereby offering the maximum benefit of SOA, therefore should we always use option 3 whenever possible?
<br /><br />- Is it intended that the AAE runtime should be used when available but only for asynchronous scenarios or those requiring SAP PI functionality like mapping/routing otherwise customers should use option 3?  I accept there are some areas of functionality not yet supported with the AAE so that would be another factor.
<br /><br />Thanks for any advice, it is much appreciated.

    Hi Aaron,
I was hoping for a better more concrete answer to my questions.
I've had discussion with a number of experienced SAP developers and read many articles.
There is no definitive paper that sets out the best approach here but I have gleaned the following key points:
    - Make interfaces asynchronous whenever possible to reduce system dependencies and improve the user experience (e.g. by eliminating wait times when they are not essential, such as by sending them an email with confirmation details rather than waiting for the server to respond)
    - It is the responsibility of the client to handle errors in synchronous scenarios hence monitoring lost through P-P services compared to the details information in transaction SXMB_MONI for PI services is not such a big issue.  You can always turn on monitoring in SOAMANAGER to trace errors if need be.
    - Choice of integration technique varies considerably by release level (for PI and Netweaver) so system landscape will be a significant factor.  For example, we have some systems on Netweaver 7.0 and other on 7.1.  As you need 7.1 for direction connection PI services we'd rather wait until all systems are at the higher level than have mixed usage in our landscape - it is already complex enough.
    - We've not tried the AAE option in a Production scenarios yet but this is only really important for high volume interfaces, something that is not a concern at the moment.  Obviously cumulative performance may be an issue in time so we plan to start looking at AAE soon.
Hope these comments may be useful.

I have some queries related to improving the performance of a scenario in my landscape.
Scenario : IDOC-SOAP (Synchronous with BPM)
The mapping is simple with 3 fld direct mapping.
Works grt with no problem in normal cases for one message transfer.
But initial load ( when we put it in new system, the scenario generates erros if we send more than 23 IDOCs at a time)
I have decided to perform the following to solve it.
    /people/william.li/blog/2008/03/07/step-by-step-guide-in-processing-high-volume-messages-using-pi-71s-message-packaging
Will it help me because its a IDOC sync scenario.
What can I do to improve the performance of this scenario?
Please suggest me good suggestions to improve the performance
Please do list me out points that I have to perform (for a sync scenario with BPM) as I am already confused watching lots of blogs posts.
    Nikhil.

do you think that the performance tuning that I mentioned in the link will hold good with sync scenarios?
i dont think so.....in this scenario the async mesg processing is made to wait
    from the blog:
As you can see, for the 1st minute, all the messages are waiting to be processed. After 60 seconds,
the packages will be created and processed. There is no change to the monitoring of each of the
    individual messages in SXI_MONITOR.
....but if you make a sync scenario wait....then probably you may run into the risk of blocking the Queues.......
If this is going to be in production then i would have been more careful...becoz firstly it is BPM....then synchronous BPM.....then a processing wait......normally do not try to make the BPM processing wait...my small suggestion

  • File to RFC synchronous scenario stopped Picking the files

    Hi Experts,
We have a File to RFC synchronous scenario. Till yesterday night it is working fine.
But suddenly it is stooped working. In moni, i can see the failed messages with the Mapping error " Can not create target element, values missing in the queue context "
No Payload in moni / communication channel monitoring / Message monitoring. I've noticed that, wrong files placed in the To-be- processed files and the adapter picked those files and failed in mapping.
I tried by stop and start the communication channel / did some dummy changes in the communication channel and activated. cleared the cache.
But still the communication channel is not working.when i stop and start the communication channel it will try to process the wrong files and failed.
Give me your valuable inputs to resolve this issue.
    Regards
    Bhargava krishna

    Hi Bharghav,
    Please go through the below,
    Symptom
FTP Adapter is being used in the business scenario for message processing.
During file processing it is noticed, that the FTP sender channel stops
polling. There is no error in the channel monitor or the trace/log files
and the polling jobs are correctly displayed in the AFW scheduler table.
The issue is observed after a network connection issue with the FTP server.
In order to remove the hanging locks from the FTP Adapter, the parameter
'ftp.timeout' setting is required to be set, which releases the lock once
the timeout value is expired. But in the above situation, the value for the
'ftp.timeout' is not taken properly while establishing the data connection
    by File Adapter.
    Other terms
FTP Adapter, sender, FTP, adapter, timeout, stalled, network, hang, polling
    Reason and Prerequisites
    Program error
    Solution
The hanging situation has now been improved by code changes. Please see
section "SP Patch Level" of this note for a list of updated software
    components.
To get this correction available in your Support Package you need to apply
the patch matching to your Support Package version as per the instructions
in the NetWeaver Support Package Stack guide which can be found on the SAP
Service Marketplace as described in SAP Note 952402.

  • Configuring the  Synchronous scenario in XI

    Hello everyone!
I want to configure a "Synchronous" scenario wherein when XI sends a message to a Marketsite, it waits for a response, then send back the response to the SAP system.
My question is this, would I need to configure a "sender adapter" in order to pick up the response, or will the response fire back automatically as long as I have configured my message interfaces as "synchronous"?
What might I need to add in the Integration Directory in order to make the synchronous scenario work?
    Warm regards,
    Glenn

In this case you want a response back from file. This is not possible as file adapter does not support sync scenario.
If you use the adapter that supports sync scenario like RFC, SOAP etc, then you have to create interfaces as follows:
Outbound Synchronous interface for sender to XI
Inbound Synchronous for XI to receiver.
In each of the interface you have to specify the request and response message types.
if it helpful reward points are appreciated

  • JDBC- RFC- JDBC Synchronous scenario (Can't see the response message)

    Hello Experts,
I tried this step in creating a synchronous scenario by using steps found in this site -> [http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/XI/File-RFC-File%28Without%20BPM%29|http://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/XI/File-RFC-File%28Without%20BPM%29] I just changes File to JDBC. But problem is I see the sent XML message in SXMB_MONI but to response message. I also can't see the Sender interface name for the response message when I tried to use F4 in the Interface Name portion.
Do someone encountered this before? Please help
    Regards,
    Alfred

    Hello,
I hope someone could guide me on how to set this up cause I only see the sent message but there's no response message in SXMB_MONI. Note that interface was successful, I just want to see what was sent by the response.

  • I find information about the performance of the ATG scenario engine.

    Hi all,
It is a big point that I can release a business user directly by using a scenario of the ATG.
It is the strongest that I can use the information that tracked a site for the element of the scenario.
I almost collect the tracking information of the site for the site business in Japan.
However, it is the present conditions to use only the analysis of the count level.
I want to reclaim the world of totally new digital marketing in Japan.
It is necessary to release many scenarios to realize 'one to one marketing '.
However, such as the performance there is a question.
At first do you know the example that you use a scenario positively, and realizes an offer and recommend?
In addition, do you know which part of the sizing is important when you come true?
    Regards,
    hirofumi

ATG scenario engine is one of the feature that ATG provides for a personalised user experience, but the major limitation of scenario is it is event driven, you need to design your ecommerce application in such a way that you have to identify the possible events anddecide on appropriate actions. This will help in very few scenarios but a larger ecommerce application concerns it is very limited.
--At first do you know the example that you use a scenario positively, and realizes an offer and recommend?
This will be very difficult to achieve using a scenario, you can display some basic promotions to the customer but not a real recommendation. First to remember that scenario is not a recommendation engine.
Also this will not useful in case of anonymous customer since tracking anonymous customer behaviour is extremely difficult without a proper recommendation engine. either you have to custom build or go with a third party recommendation engine.
    Cheers

  • How to hard code the values in XI for the synchronous scenario?

    Hi All,
Actual Scenario : Webservice - XI - Any of the Receiver Adapter(RFC/JDBC) .
The receiver adapter setup will take some more days to complete. So, time being I would like to hard code the response values in XI according to the webservice request and send the response back to webservice. Is it possible?
If it is possible, could you please tell me how to go about for this?
    Regards
    Sara

    Hey
    >>So, time being I would like to hard code the response values in XI according to the webservice request
if ur response is based upon the request, then how can u hard code any value?when u hard code any element.it will always display the hard coded value irrespective of the request.
in case u want to hard code something which does not depends on response or which will always stay the same in ur scenario, then just use the constant function of message mapping to do that

  • IDOC to WS Synchronous Scenario Without BPM

    Hi Experts,
I am dealing with Idoc to WS synchronous scenario. Can this be done without BPM??
ALEAUD can make IDOC to handle WS response??
    Please suggest.
    Regards,
    Sushama

Please suggest since BPM involves performance issue
BPM surely has performance issue...only when there are a lot of steps/ logic implemented in it and when the processing load is too much for the XI/ PI server to handle.
The BPM design in your case will be just of following steps: Receive --> SyncSend --> AsyncSend .... excluding Transformation...and a BPM with these steps wont cause a big harm to processing of other messages.

  • Response structure empty for HTTP to RFC synchronous scenario

    Hi experts,
I have a HTTP to RFC synchronous scenario.
The request is given to Price List ZBAPI.
The input to the BAPI is date, material no, customer no and condition type.
The output I am fetcching from access sequence table into the table FINAL  type structure ZFINAL which is
then sent back to source as a response.
But the problem is that I get this table as empty although BAPI returns data
    Regards,
    Mozila

    Dear Mozila,
How did you check that BAPI returns data? Did you use an exact message sent from PI to the receiver business system? If not, I would suggest to take the message which was sent by PI to the receiver business system and use it when performing BAPI test.
Are table contents received by RFC adapter on PI side (can you see BAPI execution results in message contents for response message received by RFC adapter)?
Can you see any errors in RFC communication channel?
Did you check message monitor in Integration Server for the particular message? Are there any errors?
Please also check your message mapping - this may also cause the error in case RFC adapter receives correct results, but HTT client receives empty table.
    My regards,
    Vadim

  • Synchronous Scenario. How to reduce time. Pls advice urgent.

    Hi All,
I have Synchronous Scenario. It has no BPM , simple synchronous scenario (HTTP --- Webservice).
It is taking 10 seconds. How can I reduce time of this scenario.
    Pls advice

    Hi,
The Time Consumption is based on below factors
    1. the amount of data to be processed across the interface.
    2. The response time of Receiver system
    3. Type of Mapping used and implementations of any complex logics with Advanced UDFs etc
    4. Hardware configurations
    5. Resource Consumptions etc.

  • Performance of syncronous scenario

    Hi,
I need suggestions as to how to handle the following scenario.
When a user enters data in  one field (say employee number)of the SAP screen the data must be used in XI to call a webservice
and get results(employee details) from it and fill up other fields in the screen.
I can develop a synchronous scenario easily but i want to know if i would have performance issues later.
    What factors should i consider?
Is there any other approach that i can follow?

    Dear Siva
For such a requirement you would have to go for a syncronous scenario. However for performance perspective, you can create a web service which takes multiple employee numbers and returns details for all of them in one shot, instead of retrieving emplyee details one by one.

  • Do you have an idea how to improve the performance ?

    Hi All,
    Greeting,
I'm doing SEM IP. Regarding the performance, do you have some thought about this ?
So I have planning report for project report . As we know, if we forecast against project, means the date itself is the life of the project itself.
It means it could be more than 10 years (forecast period) and 10 years (actual period). Currently I segregate between actual and forecast into different info cube .
But the performance of the planning report is slow now. Do you have an idea about this how to increase the performance. The performance I mentioned here is when we're going to the report (after putting in the value in the selection screen).
The other question, at this moment, I have a multiprovider than this multi provider consist 2 info cubes ( actual and forecast ). Than my aggregation is sitting on top of that multi-provider .
My question whether that's approach correct or not ? Or do we have to create 1 aggregate (only for forecast), than I have multi-provider consisting forecasting aggregation and actual cube .
than my query will sit on top of that multi-provider ?
    Which one is better ??
    Thanks a lot all,
    really need your help,

    Hi,
For the performance tuning, you can consider any of the following three methods,
    1. Indices
With an increasing number of data records in the InfoCube, not only the load but also the query performance can be reduced. This is attributed to the increasing demands on the system for maintaining indexes. The indexes that are created in the fact table for each dimension allow you to easily find and select the data.
    2. Partitioning
By using partitioning you can split up the whole dataset for an InfoCube into several, smaller, physically independent and redundancy-free units. Thanks to this separation, performance is increased when reporting, or also when deleting data from the InfoCube.
    3. Aggregates
Aggregates make it possible to access InfoCube data quickly in Reporting. Aggregates serve, in a similar way to database indexes, to improve performance.
    4. Compressing the Infocube
Infocube compression means aggregation of the data ignoring the request idu2019s. After compression, the system need not perform aggregation using the request ID every time you execute a query.
And I feel that as per your scenario, you need to do first compress the data based on user requirements and have only the required data in the infocube.
And for the approach regarding the Aggregation level design, choosing between the two approaches depends on the user requirements. For example,
If you have aggregation level created on top of multiprovider containing actual and forecast cube, in your report (created on top of aggregation level) you can view the key figure values present in both the cubes, which is not possible in the other approach.
So this approach is suited if your requirement is to view the records from both the cubes in your report (Comparing planning and actual values).
The second approach is used if your requirement is only to report on planning forecast cube.
    Hopes this solves your issue.
    Regards,
    Balajee

  • Message flow in SAP PI 7.31 JAVA only for ABAP Proxy synchronous scenario with Oracle DB

    Dear Experts,
I am working on a synchronous scenario Sender ABAP Proxy <===> SAP PI 7.31 JAVA only <===> Oracle Database.I have successfully
configured all the proxy configurations as well both Sender SOAP and JDBC receiver channels are showing no error when pinged from
    Cc monitoring in NWA.
1.During testing at Tx SPROXY , I am triggering a message and after 5 minutes I receive an PARSING error message with 2 messages in ECC
    local IE i.e. Tx SXMB_MONI.
Note : In NWA , I can see only 1 message that too in cancelled status.
2.Seeing the trace of the messages I assume that the messages have not moved from sender ECC system. I am still confused with flow of message
from the Message Audit log. Audit log of error messages.Could any one share the full Audit log of a successful message generated in SAP PI 7.31 JAVA only.
3.I observed that the QIN Scheduler status in ECC is in INACTIVE status. There is no queue id for 2 messages generated in ECC. Does
it should in ACTIVE status in Tx SMQR..
    Regards
    Rebecca

    Hi Thomas,
    Valuable inputs..
    1. Since I don't have any audit log for successful message, would you be able to share referring to the
below screenshot whether the message was put into receiver JDBC adapter and JDBC adapter tried to retrieve the Select response from Oracle Database.
2.I have done some setting in Advance mode of the receiver JDBC to increase the time out and other parameters as per SAP note but still the issue is same. If you perhaps have some experience in such scenarios, please share some input so that I can ask the Oracle Database administrator exactly what is required from our side.
3.Regarding the slow response from Oracle , there was some suggestion that the datatype of the request and response should match the column name of the Oracle database. I did that.. Do you have any more suggestion that may be hampering the generation of the response message from the Oracle like SAP note or document.

  • FILE to SOAP synchronous scenario - config of SOAP channel

    Hi All,
I have a scenario where I want PI to pull some files from 3rd party application.
Adapters to be used: SOAP receiver, FILE adapters.
I am aware of the use of Request/Response beans in File sender channel and the File receiver channel to dump the received files in a particular location.
I need help with the configuration of the SOAP channel.
The files to be pulled will be Encrypted.
    Summary:
File sender(RequestResponse & ResponseOneWay Beans) , File receiver( to receive the files), SOAP receiver.
Need help with the config of SOAP.
Kindly let me know your views.
    Thanks,
    Pratibha.

    Hi,
Let me put it in detail steps:
In forward flow we will be sending an IDoc. It will be processed and later an Acknowledgement file will be generated.
Now, we want to PULL this Ack file. If the other party had to push the Ack file, the scenario would have been simple.
But, we want to poll for this file and then pull it.
So, we would have something like this:
    1. FILE SENDER sends a sample file.
    2. We will be applying the beans in file sender to make it a synchronous scenario. So, the Ack file will be received at the location mentioned in the corresponding FILE RECEIVER adapter.
    3. We have a SOAP RECEIVER which should send the ACK file in response.
I have configured the same scenario where the RECEIVER was HTTP adapter. The 3rd party had provided us the URL and ENT-APRF value. When I used to send the sample file via FILE SENDER to this HTTP receiver, I was able to retrieve the ACK file via the FILE RECEIVER.
Now, I wish to configure the same using RECEIVER SOAP adapter.
I need to know about the config at SOAP end i.e. how and where  the ACK file will be available at the SOAP end for the FILE sender to pull the file.
    Ack files will be encrypted..
Any views/suggestions will be of great help.
    Thanks,
    Pratibha.
