The signal strength on my first gen AE is dropping off.
The signal strength on my first gen AIrport Extreme is dropping off. Is this an early indication of pending failure?
Well, the First Generation AirPort Extremes are about 5 years old now, and 5 years of 24/7 operation is pretty good for a modem or router, so it might be time to start thinking about upgrading to a new, faster dual band model.
Personally, I replace the modem and any routers at about 4-5 years, even if they are operating normally. But there are other things to think about as well.
Chances are, there are far more wireless networks around you than there were even a few years ago, so heavy competition for the very limited number of channels that are available may be slowing down your signal significantly.
Five years ago, I could find two or three wireless networks around me. Today, there are over twenty.
I noticed that my neighbor next door was installing a new wireless camera and security system a few days ago, and he told me it was up and running yesterday. Yesterday, my wireless slowed down about 20%...not sure why...but I have an idea.
If you have added other wireless devices like cordless phones, Bluetooth accessories, a baby monitor, a new wireless thermostat and who knows what, all of these things can affect the performance of wireless network communications.
You have not provided any specifics on your network as far as the slow down is concerned, or mentioned any steps that you might have taken to investigate, so until we know more, we'll have to leave it at generalities and possibilities.
You never know. A new router might be just the ticket.....or.....it may offer no improvement at all. Every few days, we see a post from a user who has added a new router...and their network performance has dropped.
For this reason, if you are thinking of replacing the AirPort Extreme, you might want to check with the store on their return policies before you buy.

Ignoring the signal strength indicator.....
I see a lot of posts saying they have less bars on 3G... etc
My question is for Gen 1 owners who now have a gen2 phone. WIthout comparing the signal strength indicator do you find reception is better, worse or the same...
Also, is the sound quality of the speaker better as they claim?
ThanksI didn't have a first gen iphone but I find reception much much better, in areas where there were dead spots I have great reception...even in my house...which is the opposite of what I heard about 3g...now I just need my phone to receive calls and voicemail...my port is taking forever since 11:15AM yesterday...its now 8:08AM my time and no dice...

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it is in the another room. I am only receiving one bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.
There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation: (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together. (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express. Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit. (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you. (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help. If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

What does it mean on an ipad2 when the lock icon beside the signal strength comes on and off?
What does it mean on an ipad2 when the lock icon beside the signal strength comes on and off, and an intermittant lock appears on the left beside the SSID name?
I am trying to connect to a Cisco network, and even though the SSID is open authentication the ipad will either say it cannot connect or ask for the password. That's a "resize" arrow. Try relaunching Finder (Cmd+Opt+Esc) or >Force Quit

In the last 1-2 months, the signal strength in my home area has dropped dramatically.
Signal strength in my home neighborhood has dropped dramatically. This is for all three phones we have here. A Samsung Note 3, Samsung 4 mini and an iPhone 4. Additionally, all who visit need to go to the front of the house to make calls. The dead zone continues for about a 2 mile radius. @
You will need to call VZW to report this issue so that they can open a trouble ticket to investigate. Call 800-922-0204 and ask for tier 2 tech support.

I have a Airport Express (older style that plugs into the power socket) up one end of the house, which gets the signal from an AirPort Extreme at the front of the house. It works ok for general internet and email, but the signal at the Airport Express end is not really strong enough for my Apple TV. So today I bought an Edimax Powerline Adapter. Connected one end to the AirPort Extreme and the other end to the Apple TV and Apple TV now works great! So I was thinking, if I connected my Airport Express to the Powerline Adapter with an ethernet cable, would that improve the strength of the signal that the Airport Express would re-send out for WiFi. But all that happens is that neither the AirPort Extreme or the Airport Express now seem to broadcast any WiFi signal. Is it possible to do this?
Yes, but you need to change the mode of the Express from wireless extend to create a wireless network and the routing part to bridge. Otherwise it will indeed mess up.

My wifi will not lock onto signal? The signal is as good as it gets but it just keeps searching?

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Airport Radar has a square in the signal strength
I am attending a university in LA and while in my dorm room I look for a wifi signal and there are two available. When I choose one the signal radar in the menu bar shows a full signal but there is a small SQUARE in the middle of it. I go to safari and have no internet access. Does anyone know what the square means in the wifi radar?
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)Does anyone know what the square means in the wifi radar?
It means that you are connecting to another computer that has created a wireless network. This icon represents a computer-to-computer network.
FYI, this is the OS 10.3 discussion area. Since you are using OS 10.4, you should post future questions in the OS 10.4 discussion area. -
My phone quit displaying the Verizon logo at the top and now it only displays 3G and the signal bar. And its falling off the 3g network after finishing with voice calls.
There is no roaming agreement with AT&T since a CDMA phone can't roam on AT&T's GSM network and vice-vera. The roaming agreement is with Alltel, which is in effect with Verizon since it was Verizon that purchased Alltel's CDMA network.
Edit, I guess it is with AT&T since I now recall AT&T purchased some of Alltel's assets.

My MacBook won't connect to the Internet, but it's connected to my router. When I go to network preferences, it says that it has a self assigned ip address, and can't connect to the Internet. How can I fix this? Please help!
First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly. -
[SOLVED] Reading the signal strength of wlan0
I'm writing a widget for awesomeWM that displays my current wifi signal. The guide I'm using says to check the value of /sys/class/net/wlan0/wireless/link however, I don't have a /wireless/ directory. Some Google suggests this was changed a while back in the Linux kernel, but I can't find the new way to get it.

What if you use "iwconfig" like conky does and parse the values?
iwconfig wlan0 | grep -i quality
Link Quality=70/70 Signal level=-30 dBm
Or I think you have some info in /proc/net/wireless:
cat /proc/net/wireless
Inter-| sta-| Quality | Discarded packets | Missed | WE
face | tus | link level noise | nwid crypt frag retry misc | beacon | 22
wlan0: 0000 70. -31. -256 0 0 0 0 0 0
EDIT: found a simple script to parse info in /proc/net/wireless that you could use:
watch -n 1 "awk 'NR==3 {print \$3 \"00 %\"}''' /proc/net/wireless"
Source: http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/06/display … -real.html
Yep! Info I needed was in /proc/net/wireless, and that script returns exactly what I needed. Thanks! -

A question. Do I plug the TC into the Comcast modeum Router or the iMac?
Both is good.. but at least one of your routers.. TC or express must be plugged into the router.. the imac can get internet connection by wireless. -
