The Spinning Beach Ball of Death

I have an older G5 running tiger. I recently had to replace my hard drive, which had crashed. Now, I regularly get the spinning beach ball which hangs the program that I'm in, and eventually the entire computer (i.e. I can't get back to Finder to use Force Quit). I've repaired permissions and run TechTools, and haven't found anything wrong. Any thoughts as to what I can do to fix this? It's very frustrating to deal with.
Thanks for the help.

di you update the new hard drive in Tiger using Tiger's Disk Utility. Also check ASP and see if the hard drive is recognized.

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!

Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS).

  • My Macbook pro started running incredibly slow and I am getting the spinning beach ball of death across all applications.

I have no idea why this is happening. I normally use Word, Excel, Google Chrome and sometimes Photoshop when using my computer and then one day it started getting super slow. This is my etrecheck.
Computer running slow all of the sudden. Getting spinning beach ball of death through all applications all the time. Computer losing charge while not plugged in.

    Linc,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

  • My MacBook is very slow and constantly has the spinning beach ball of death!!!

In the last couple if weeks my MacBook has suddenly slowed down a LOT. Sometimes it takes ages for it to boot up when I turn it on and at other times not as long. Then once I log in, as soon as I click on something, the spinning beach ball appears and won't go away so I have to force it to restart.
It runs a little bit faster in safe mode and if I log in as a guest user, but it's still relatively slow.
So far I have tried the following:
    - starting in safe mode
    - resetting PRAM
    - turning off then pressing ctrl, option, left shift and the power button for 10 seconds then turn it back on
    - repairing disk permissions
I've been told that it might be best to reformat my mac, but in order to do this I need to back up. I bought a Seagate Back Up Plus 1TB and tried to use time machine. After a while a message popped up saying "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.". There is something on my hard drive, but I cant tell if my mac has fully backed up or not.
    Any suggestions?

  • I just downloaded the new Java update now Safari is slow and I'm getting the spinning beach ball of death.

Typing in Safari with the new Java update that I downloded today causes the spinning beach ball and slow loading of pages. As usual, Java is causing problems. Just once I would like to see things run without having to depend on Java.

    24Golfer:
I think there's something more, because it keeps happening to me with the Finder where it says that it is not responding when I go to the Force Quit window.
Are you saying that the Finder is reported as not responding? If yes, try this:
    Go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.finder.plist
    Drag com.apple.finder.plist to desktop
    Restart computer.
Monitor to see if anything changes, or Finder is still not responding.
    Good luck.

  • IMac 20" was running very slow (could not even scroll without the spinning beach ball of death), The computer was operating on OSX 10.5. After a lot of attempts of diagnostic attempts, have resorted to an erase and reinstall. says it will take 60  hours!

Working on my friends iMac 20" computer. It is 2.66 ghz, and was running 4mb of ram when the computer started acting up on OSX 10.5.
When I was called over the computer was so slow that I could not even scroll without getting the beach ball of death. I checked the activities moniter, and found an HP application was taking up 46% of the CPU. We attempted to go in and uninstall all of the HP applications, but the computer ended up freezing. Ended up doing a hard shut down, and decided to run disk utilities. Repaired both Permissions, and Disk. Restarted... no difference. Thought of restoring the computer to when it was working fine via Time machine in disk utility mode... failed. Finally resorted to deleting the hard drive, reinstalling Tiger, and upgrading.
After what seemed like forever for the hard drive to erease, attempted to reinstall. Ended up taking almost an hour to verify the disk, and then announced, that it would take 58+ hours to install. After leaving it for 3 hours, the number was going up, and was not installing.
I then thought the problem would be the 2nd party ram. We replaced the paired 2mb's to give 4mb's with the origional paired 1mb's providing now 2 mb's. Attempted to reinstall osx. Same problem 60+ hours after 3 hours of letting it sit.
What to do now? Is it the logic board? Could it be a faulty hard drive? Should I attempt in firewire more from another computer? Do a 7 pass erase over the hard drive? Run Disk warrior?
If anyone could give some info on why this is so blessedly slow that would be great thanks!

Decided to try and chek out the hard drive more extensively. SMART, states that it is verified. After running Diskwarrior and repairing all of the disk and the permissions, and running a hardware test, everything seemed to be running fine.
Went back to disk utilities, checked disk and permissions again, verified. SMART states it is verified.
Attemping now to install Mac OSX 10.4.7 from the original install disk. I am currently attemting the basic install, no programs, nothing. It has been over an hour, It is 44% of installing the base system Part 1, announcing 5 hours and 53 minutes.
When I did erase the hard drive yes I selected to write over zeros once. I then erased a second time from Diskwarrior.

  • DVD studio pro is extremely slow, every action brings the spinning beach ball of death

FCP and motion both work fine. Its only DVD studio pro that is an issue. I try to find the preference folder to see if I could trash the preferences but not luck any suggestions?

I see this a lot if I am working in a menu with quite a few buttons and I want to move or amend something. The issue is usually that the 'auto assign button navigation' option is selected in the 'settings' drop down box. This forces DVDSP to re-evaluate everything on the layout each time you do anything, and it takes a while to sort through the items in the menu.
The answer is to uncheck this option, and things speed up dramatically. You do need to remember to check the 'auto assign now' option when done, mind you!
Of course, if you are not in a menu and adding things like a new track is causing a lot of beach balling, then I would think something else is wrong with your set up.

  • IPhoto 6.0.6 freezes with the spinning beach ball of death....

    Hi There,
Anytime I try to do anything too fast in iPhoto (scroll quickly, double-click on a photo), the application freezes up and the only thing I can do is force quit. Then, my whole computer moves slower until I reboot.
    Any suggestions?

    VEM2
    Some questions:
How much RAM do you have?
How big is your HD and how much free space on it?
Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS and Quicktime and the app. That's 10.4.9, 7.1.3 and 6.0.6 respecyively
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
    4. Check your HD with Disk Utility
    Regards
    TD

  • The spinning beach ball of death came with the last upgrade.

I have used Firefox for a long time and it has always been instantly responsive. With the last upgrade, every click brings several seconds of waiting. I cleaned house - emptied caches, defragged, etc. - but the delay still persists. Performing the same operations in Safari and IE is still instant.

di you update the new hard drive in Tiger using Tiger's Disk Utility. Also check ASP and see if the hard drive is recognized.

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death

I'm always geting the Spinning Beach Ball of Death, yet instead of it being from having heavy stuff open or not enough RAM, it's as simple as coming out of a screen saver, or clicking a forum button on a browser that can cause it. It doesn't stop, instead it just keeps going until you can do nothing, and can only restart the iMac. Some times you can move the curser around, yet Finder doesn't open the Force Quit and the shortcut doesn't work.
How do you stop geting the SBBD??!! And it's not from a lack of RAM, as I got the max of 4 GB, and just having Firefox and a few much smaller applications open don't use even close to that much RAM. I got 72 Gigs of space left on the man harddrive, so it's not from having too little space there.
Here's some logs from right when the last freeze and restart occured.

Nope. But when OS X Lion came out, the forever spinning beach ball stopped. I have yet to be forced to power re-start my iMac because of this since upgrading to OS X Lion. Now only programs generate it, when using a lot of memory.

  • Frequent Crashes - Unrecoverable spinning beach ball of death - with 10.5.7

I upgraded to 10.5.6 when it was released. I experienced multiple kernel panics daily, many of which cited graphics related faults. So I reformatted the HD, reinstalled Leopard, and installed the 10.5.5 combo update.
Last week I installed the 10.5.7 combo update along with other minor non-os updates. Now, instead of having multiple kernel panics, I get multiple system Freezes at random. But usually associated with opening or closing dialog boxes (save as..., etc.), progress bars, and opening Apps from the dock. The system freeze is evident by the Spinning Beach Ball of Death. CMD-OPT-Esc doesn't not bring up the force quit dialog box, nor will any menu item be accessible. The temp increases as it's stuck in some loop. The case area near F3 and F4 gets very hot. I installed the Fan Control Pref Pane to force the fans on earlier.
So, still under the assumption that it's a software issue. I did an Archive and Install of Leopard, and upgraded the OS using 10.5.7 combo update. Sadly, the system freezes still occur at random, but still mostly when animating dialog boxes. The last one was when I tried to attach a file in Mail.app (and then again while trying to open the system profiler while writing this post).
The only way out of the freeze is to give the one-finger-salute to the power button, and power down.
At first I thought this might be a software issue like a corrupt file, poorly written driver or kernel extension, or memory leak. But now, I'm concerned that this might be a sign of a failing GPU as the 8600M GT GPUs had some manufacturing trouble.

I just updated last evening to 10.5.7 on my 24" White iMac (late 2006) and am having the same issue. I did it first on my 12" G4 iBook without any issues for a week so I went ahead and updated the iMac. I'm using it now with kid gloves. I've disabled Default Folder and DragThing to see if they are incompatible (no updates for either were available at this time) but I also have a feeling my Drobo storage device might be related because Spotlight was indexing after the update. I hadn't used spotlight much because I don't think it was in fact indexing the Drobo before the update. My search results seemed limited to the internal drive. The Drobo firmware and utility are both up-to-date as well.

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death... any way how to stop a process under 10.4.9?

I remember the days when one could reliable and quickly interrupt any process that hung or took longer than expected by pressing “Command + .”. Since upgrading to MacOS 10.4.9 I experience mainly under Safari and other apps many instances where my Powerbook G4 simply hangs and processes a task for what seems to be an eternity. For no apparent reason. Pressing “Command + .” doesn’t do anything nor does “Command + Option + Escape” (how could it when the system is not responding) and usually I decide just to hold the on button down to force my Powerbook into action. Not healthy, I know, but we need to get in with our work. So, my question is: is there any other way to stop the spinning beach ball of death and interrupt a process?

You could launch the Activity Monitor, set it for all processes, and see what might be hanging up. In that app, you can select the hanger, click Quit Process, and either Quit or Force Quit it. That said, however, it appears you have major system problems which need attending to. First backup your machine to an external HD. I suggest a bootable backup/clone, using Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. Then, boot with the install disk and run Disk Utility, repairing the disk and permissioins, and the Apple Hardware Test using the extended tests. If the disk passes those, boot back into the machine and see if the SBBOD problem's gone. If not, create a new admin user account, log into it, and check again. If gone, your original accounts corrupted—long an painful process to rectify. If not, then reinstall the latest COMBO update. If that doesn't fix things, then an Archive & Install, saving user and network settings, installation is in order.

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death in iTunes when Inserting iPhone into Cradle

Anyone else getting the spinning beach ball of death when inserting your iPhone into your cradle to sync? I'm getting that, but only on my iMac, not my MacBook Air.
    Any suggestions?
    YoungTurk

I'm having the same problem. And it tells me that sync is not activated and asks me if want to activate sync. I say 'yes' and it then say it cannot activate sync would I like to 'override.' This just started happening this week. And it's very annoying. It's as if something is accessing my iphone and keeping iTunes from accessing the phone a while. If I wait long enough it shows up in iTunes. I'm running Symantic Norton Anti Virus. My first guess is there's a virus. Or Norton Anti Virus is trying to access the phone for some reason. I just noticed you now have the option of automatically checking the iphone for virus when connected. But when I deactivate the auto scan of the iphone option the ball still spins for minutes and minutes. I've spent HOURS trying to figure this out. Apple has got to help. I've not installed anything else new to my system in the past few months.

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death and Kernal Panics - Capacitors?

    Hi,
I got this email from my mother. This is her computer, not mine. I'm technically adept, so I'd be able to help her. I'm not sure this is actually a kernal panic, or if it's another issue such as capacitors?
    ================
Lately sometimes (at least every couple of days) when I first turn on my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM, OS 10.3.9) after it's been shut off all night long, I get the colored spinning beach ball of death for a minute or so. Then the background on the monitor turns grey-green and in a box in the middle of the screen is "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button" - this is written in four languages. I assume this is a kernal panic. When I restart the computer it's okay.
When I turned it on yesterday, however, the monitor was blue, but not normal blue as it was all "wavy." The dock only appeared about halfway up from the bottom of the screen, and only the bottom part of "Mail" appeared - no Mailbox or anything else. I turned it off with the power button and it was then all right.
Today the same thing happened, but I didn't get anything on the screen, except it was a "wavy blue" so I again used the power button to turn it off, and then when I restarted it it came on fine.
I've also noticed that the computer is much slower these past few weeks than previously, especially when using Safari. I have also seen the spinning beach ball of death in black instead of the usual colors.
I have not installed any new programs lately, nor ran any Software Updates lately. I have recently repaired my Permissions.
    ================
Thank you in advance for any suggestions and advice.
    Robbi

    Hi,
Here is the kernal panic log. Thanks. We have done Dr Smoke's Resolving Kernal Panics.

  • Spinning beach ball of death on opening mail

I've been using mail since i had my Mac OS X 10.4.6, however, when I updated to 10.4.9, as soon as i open the program, i get the spinning beach ball of death, making me force quit the application. basically, i cannot use my mail application!!!

Quit the Mail.app and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail.
Delete the newly created Mail folder.
Move the original Mail folder from the Desktop back to the same location. Copy the original Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: Moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
Launch Mail and if successful, decline any prompt provided to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
If this is successful, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and the old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.
