Thinkpad Edge E420 does not boot up and customer service does not help

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 laptop that stopped powering on all of a sudden. It was working fine till one day fine and all of a sudden, does not boot up the next morning. I have googled around and looked in Lenovo Forums and it looks like this is a common issue with motherboard on these types of laptops and that lenovo fixed some of these. Unfortunately, my laptop is out of warranty but I do see that Lenovo fixed similar problems for some laptops that are out of warranty. Please see the two threads below
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/thinkpad-e420-wont-start/td-p/755813
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E420-motherboard-problems/td-p/667009/page/10
So, I tried calling customer service multiple times hoping that I could get to talk to a supervisor and explain the problem. Just today, I was told I need to agree to pay $575 (which is much more than what the laptop is worth) to even talk to a supervisor. This is quite disappointing.
If any Lenovo support staff is monitoring it, can you help here?

Its not the motherboard even though they say it is. All they will do is replace the motherboard and it will just fail on you again. I had the exact same issue and the motherboard was replaced. Next day I used it it failed again. You need to remove the CMOS battery which is located underneath the laptop. Its in the compartment with the one screw. Remove that. Remove the battery and all power supply. Then  plug the CMOS back in and  plug in powercord. Once you have done that start up as normal. Press f1 to enter BIOS. Go to the Config tab and under "power options" disable "rapid intel start." That worked for me as a temporary solution.
It clearly isnt a motherboard fault as all Tech support from Lenovo claim it to be. I mean c'mon I had the exact same fault the day after my motherboard was replaced, but after removing CMOS and battery the motherboard magically starts to work?? Must be related to the W5 problem they have been having with BIOS.
Heres a link to another thread with others with the same problem.

Let me know if this helps at all since no one from Lenovo seems to care about helping their own customers... very dissappointed with the customer service. Personally I dont think Ill ever purchase a lenovo product again after their pathetic execuse for "tech support." Anyway good luck!

  • Graphics Switch causing crash and Customer service is not up to par.

I have been having an issue which I believe is to be when my Macbook Pro switches from its graphic card to the graphic driver. When it makes the switch it locks up at a black screen. I have tried setting my system preferences to always keep it on the graphic card and it worked for a while but soon it locked up again. I have driven to the nearest Apple store which is nearly two hours from my home and talked with an Apple Care person over the phone. I was told upon my second visit and over the phone that it was a hardware issue and that they would send it in to be repaired. I recieved a call the following day that they had only reinstalled the system software and wiped my laptop and that was their definition of "fix." I was told by the lady over the phone that it was a software glitch instead. I took her word for it and made the drive to get my laptop. I got it home and not even 10 minutes of using it, it locked up again, still doing the exact same thing. This has become very frustrating. I'm getting ready for college and having my laptop randomly lock up and having to reboot it is likely to be a massive nuisance. This issue has been going on for months and I've been waiting for a fix for a very long time and now I'm a couple weeks out of warranty and it's still not fixed. Needless to say I'm not happy.

I also just noticed that the promotion ends tomorrow, and VZW had no idea if it is going to be extended or not:
For a limited time, existing customers who are within 12 months of their upgrade eligibility date can trade in their old devices and use Verizon      Edge to enjoy the benefits of a new 4G LTE device. This offer is available      7/1/14 - 9/30/14.
My concern is not with being able to upgrade right now, it is over miss-information that was provided to me on my first call.  Being told that I was able to upgrade AND keep my current phones was quite an incentive.
1st call I was eligible to upgrade that day for Edge, and keep my phones - I decided to think about it over the weekend.
2nd call I am eligible to upgrade to Edge on 10/10, but have to turn in my current devices.
3rd call to clarify about the 9/30/14 promotion end date, they had no idea if it was still to be available - so I might not be able to upgrade at all on 10/10 to Edge.

  • Given False Information by a Door-to-Door Salesman, and Customer Service Can't Help

Two months ago, one of the Verizon door-to-door salesmen convinced me to switch over to Verizon from my former carrier.  The price was within a few pennies, and altough I was happy with the service I had,  I was willing to give it a try because he said the speed would be faster.  I told him I would do it as long as there was a 30 day time period to cancel with no charges on my account if I was dissatisfied.  He said that Verizon had a "no worries guarantee" policy.  I asked three times if that meant that I could cancel within 30 days without being charged.  He answered, "yes."
I wasn't satisified with the upgrade,  and found less expensive service with another carrier, so I cancelled within the 30 days.  However, the first customer service representative I spoke with evidently didn't cancel it because I haven't yet received a return kit yet and I'm still being charged for "current activity" on my most recent bill.  She told me to wait for the return kit and closing bill to call back to get the charges reversed.  I have received neither, so I called back today out of concern.  I spoke with another customer service representative and her supervisor today.  Both nice, but they told me my service ongoing but had been suspended for non-payment, and that the "no worries guarantee policy" would refund only the early cancellation fee, and that there was a minimum 1 month charge, so no pro-rating either.  Surprise!  That's four really nice people at Verizon who have either told me false information or informed me of yet another surprise charge that I was initially told I wouldn't owe.  I've heard the words "we've never done a free trial" plenty of times, and I understand that.  It would be nice if all the representatives were in agreement about that however, especially for a family on a single fixed income.  I asked for the manager's supervisor; she said she was going to write and email up the chain regarding the false information I was given, but that I would owe the money no matter the outcome.  She said I would need to go to the Verizon website to pursue a supervisor higher than herself.  Not helpful, since the Verizon website sends you back to the customer service line I called to get her.
This is the second time that I've tried switching to Verizon; the first time it took them a month and three phone calls from me to realize service wasn't available at my address; now this.  Is there anyone at Verizon willing to treat me fairly according to what is told me by your representatives?  Are you hoping to have a chance at winning me back as a customer in a year, or are you satisfied to simply try and collect the $126.33 that you are charging me via a false pretense?  I'm looking for a reason to give you another chance.  I'm hoping there is someone out there with a suggestion where to take this next.

  • PLAYBOOK WILL NOT BOOT UP AND NO RESOLUTION IN SIGHT

    Hi All,
I bought my PB quite recently and now my PB can not boot up and there is NO RESOLUTION in sight.  I don't even know whether my problem is software or battery related.
First my PB can not boot up.  The last time I used it , the power level was just under 50%.  I managed to charge PB to full power (I knew this because LED showed a solid green light).  When I tried to start PB, LED showed a red light briefly (for 4 seconds) then everything went off.
I tried all the solutions appeared in this web site:
1/connect to a power charger then press power on/off button for (10,20,30, and more seconds)
2/connect to a laptop and  press power on/off button for (10,20,30, and more seconds)
3/start PB by holding down power on/off and + and - buttons at the same time for 10,20,30, and more seconds
4/start PB by holding down power on/off and + and - buttons at the same time for 10,20,30, and more seconds with friends (several friends will help me pressing these buttons in different combinations while other check the clock for 10,20,30, or more seconds). (we were called victims of PlayBook around the office nowadays).
Anyone has other solutions for us ?

Try plugging the PlayBook into your computer, then open the BlackBerry Desktop Software. Your computer will try to connect to your PlayBook and when it is unsuccessful in doing this, it should show a message on the screen saying that the Desktop Software cannot connect to your device and will give you a few options. Select the option to update the device software. This will likely wipe your PlayBook and return it to factory condition, but at least you will have a functioning PlayBook again.
If that still doesn't work, go to http://blackberry.com/support/, select PlayBook, then choose the Contact Us tab. You should now be provided with a phone number you can use to contact RIM in your country.
    I hope this info helps!

If your issue is resolved, don't forget to click the Solution button on the resolution!

  • Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.

My Apple Macbook 13.3" Laptop-Black 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will not boot up and instead I get a grey screen with a folder and a question mark over it.  I've tried Option key, and Control S keys and it still will not boop up.  Can anyone help?

If you are running Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you are running Lion or later:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

I'm going to assume that since you deleted your hard drive and all its files, you had a backup, yes? If the backup has an OS (bootable clone), then you can boot into it by holding down the option key when you start up you iMac and choose the backup drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper to copy the files back to your iMac.

Edit /etc/sensors.d/sensors.conf and look up your exact chipset. A few chipset names are similar, so make sure the one you are editing is yours. Add the line 'set fanX_div 4' near the start of your chipset config, replacing X with the number of CPU fans your system has.
How can one find the exact chipset name? The overall information spilled out by dmidecode is staggering.
    Later Edit:
Accoding to http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Lm_sensors#Configuration ,the chipset name should be in the sensors output.

My 1-year ipod nano locked up and would not start overnight. The on/off button will not work and stopped holding charge. No water damage, no fall, nothing unusual. I restored it (twice) but it will still not hold charge and on/off does not work. I tried to restore it again and charged it in three different locations with different cables. etc but nothing. Suggestions?

    - After charging for 1/2 hour or so, does iTunes see the iPod?  If yes, restore the iPod from backup.
    - If no, se if placing the iPod in recovery mode will make it visible so you can restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:

will not boot up and fans run at high speed

after much head scratching I ran the hardware test disk from cd. The test showed a memory issue I eliminated the faulty one systematically. So it wasn't a hard drive or software problem in the end it was faulty memory. What was misleading was the computer telling me there was a fault on the hard drive. The machine works fine now. Thanks to people's comments I learned a bit more about the G5 that helped eliminate probable causes

  • Satellite Pro M10 will not boot again and comes up with the error message

My Toshiba Satellite Pro M10 notebook will not boot again and comes up with the error message "load error" when I push the power button.
The problem arised after installation of "symantec system works" and trying to restart windows XP professional to make the installed program executable.
What can I do to get the notbook restart again?

    Hi everyone
If you cannot acces to the boot menu by pressing F8 you can try to recover the the master boot record from Windows Xp professional installation Cd, to do this:
Attention: don't run these commands if you have more than one operating systems running in your laptop.
Boot from Windows Xp installation cd
Choose repair installation from console by pressing "C" key.
A console will open asking you for administrator password, insert the password and press enter.
Run de command: FIXMBR (It will write a new boot record)
Run de command: FIXBOOT (It will write a new boot file)
Restart the laptop and now windows should start without problems.

And, don't think that just because it was two teaspoons and not a glassful that there is a difference.
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.
