ThinkPad T400 - small issues, need assist

hello ... i am not at all familiar with this laptop (i have a different brand) ... my friend owns the Lenovo T400 ThinkPad ... i tried to download (from a flash drive) two Windows Movie Maker Slide-Movies i made for her sister; but was unable to *open a new folder* so that i could then give her a desktop shortcut; nor could i 'drag' them to an existing file, it gave me the *circle with the slash* symbol [why, i do not know] ... also, her Desktop Icons are the size of a *pea* and i could not locate the Instruction to "Increase their size" ... i realize these two issues are very basic, and i'm almost embarrassed to ask because i thought all computers had pretty much the same instructions on how to do stuff and it would be fairly simple to locate, however, i need some step-by-step instructions that I can relay to her ... we do not live close by ... thanks for any help you can provide, patidee

(my computer has been in the shop for 2days ... just got it back) >>> thank you JDay for replying ... i thought i did right-click the desktop, but perhaps i didn't ... that's how it works on my PC, but, whatever, i will tell her to do that.  okay, so i inserted the Flash Drive into her ThinkPad and we *watched the 3 movies* ... what i wanted to do was FILE them on her ThinkPad so that she did not always have to view the movies via the Flash Drive, however, i did not see anywhere where i could OPEN a *new folder* ... on my PC when i go into my files, there is a kinda tool bar and one of the options is NEW FOLDER, so all i need to do is click on those words, or click on the word "pictures' and a window w/open and to add a New Folder is one of the options; but when i went into her files, i did NOT see those options, i clicked on a few things, but i couldNOT locate that option ... my intention was to open a folder and file copies of the 3 movies in it, and then do the *ShortCut* .. i even attempted to drag one of the movies to an existing folder and that's when i got the symbol which prevented me ... so, anyway, then i sent a Shortcut to the Desktop, thinking that all she would have to do was to Click on that shortcut Icon, however, [later] when she did, it would not open because it was a Shortcut from NOwhere ... her son got her the ThinkPad, she really does not know much about it's operation, and apparently she does not see him that often either ... so you see, we are like the blind leading the blind ... so any light you can shed would be greatly appreciated - pati

  • Multiple ipods syncing issue - need assistance

Have a Windows XP computer and while on user B's profile, plugged in ipod A to recharge battery. When I plug in the other ipod B within the owner's (User B) profile, a window pulls up stating that ipod A is tied to another library and if I want to erase this ipod B and sync it to this library. I can see the library in iTunes and its the correct library for ipod B/user B, but do not want to lose the songs. Right now, no songs appear on ipod B, but they are all in itunes at this time. So, if it ok to erase and sync so that when I plug in ipod B into this windows profile itunes, it syncs back to the existing library?

Additional detail to the issue above: iTunes is not identifying the device correctly. It states its one ipod when the other is plugged in. And the existing library is for the other ipod, not the one with the device label.

  • Blackberry 8330 Freezing Issues ( Need Assistance )

I have a brand new Blackberry 8330. I got it about a month ago. Its has a One ( 1 ) GB memory card and I've downloaded about a dozen apps to the phone, using the device memory. The phone displays an hour glass icon and freeze. I usually have to take the battery out ot get the phone working again, but to be honest, its a little annoying. I was wondering how I could upgrade my Blackberry 8330's device memory or if I could fix the problem by getting a bigger memory card? I tried to go thru my carrier's support system but, to be honest, it sucks. Any help you could provide me would be appreciated.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
There are three types of potential memory on a BB: 1) Application Memory, 2) Device Memory, and 3) Media/SD Card Memory
Application Memory -- This is the most crucial; it is the protected (not user accessible), dedicated, and fixed (in size) space that is available as the destination for the installation of applications (plus some application storage, overhead and such). You cannot touch AppMemory. You cannot improve the maximum AppMemory that your BB has. It is what it is. Applications can only install here...there is no option.
Device Memory -- This is space on your BB that you can touch to store files, pictures, media, etc. Typically, it is not terribly large, but it is available to you.
SD/Media Card Memory -- This is what it says...your SD card, for you to store files, media, pictures, etc. It can be as large as your BB OS can support...see this KB:
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB05461
The ONLY memory space you can increase is the Media Card -- all others are fixed at the factory. But, increasing Media Card Memory does nothing to help with your situation.
On some devices/OS levels, you can only see "File Free" (Options > Status), which I think is equivalent to AppMemory. On other devices, you can see all three memory usage levels (Options > Memory). Here are some guidelines to use:
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB15345
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB14320
    http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB14213
Lastly, it is always important to properly close applications when you are done with them. Using the Back or the Red key will not do this -- those leave it to the app to decide what to do...and some will leave themselves resident in memory, consuming resources on your BB, slowing the overall performance. Rather, to close an app, press and select "Close" or "Exit"...that will force the application to be closed, freeing up for your new use the resources it was consuming. Some apps will always remain running (typically -- BBMessenger, Browser, Homescreen, Phone, and Messages)...but, you should still close them properly - especially the Browser...if it is left on an active web page, it will not only consume extra resources but battery power as well.
Further, anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure. Some have taken to doing this on a regular basis as a preventive measure...some as frequently as once per day. Others have obtained the QuickPull app to automate a simulated Batt-Pull.
    Best!
    Good luck!

I didn't realize until after the purchase that the ultrabay battery doesn't exist for the T410, which sucks. I do like the layout of the keyboard, speakers, special buttons, and fingerprint scanner better on the T410. The keyboard currently has a flaw that another thread points out. the biggest complaint on my T410 (other than the keyboard issue) is the thickness.  Anyway, now these T Thinkpads are fat beasts....and I just have to live with it....or you can pay more for less performance and hard drive storage on the T410s if you want to go back to the thinness.
About the ultra-bay battery issue for anyone whom is considering a T410 and needs the ultra-bay battery: consider up-sizing slightly to a T510, since it does support an ultra-bay battery.
About the keyboard issue: Lenovo released a firmware update to fix this a few days ago and it should no longer be an issue
About the thickness and weight: it's funny, I guess it's all a matter of perspective.  My previous laptop was a 3.3 year old Toshiba Qosmio G30, with a 17" 16:10 screen, and it's noticeably much larger in all dimensions and at least 1.5x the weight of my T510 (which is larger and heavier than your T410!).  I was literally shocked at how compact and light my T510 is when I unpacked it, and I'm still impressed with its size and weight vs performance.  No regrets for me in that category.  I just thought I'd throw a bit of the opposite perspective out there for other potential buyers.  Now if only they'd release the keyboard bios fix for my T510....

Yes this is true.  The slider to release the item in the bay is on the underside of the laptop.  Still trying to figure out why this would be a big issue for anyone, but maybe that's just me.  I've never had a ThinkPad before (nor any laptop with an ultra-bay-like feature) so maybe I just don't realize what I'm missing.

  • [Solved] bluetooth hardware switch - Thinkpad T400

    Hello,
I've got a Thinkpad T400 with integrated bluetooth, but I don't really use bluetooth, so I want to disable it to save battery power.
I figured out, how to disable it via laptop-mode-tools on startup, but when I use the hardware switch for Wlan and bluetooth to turn my Wlan on and off again bluetooth starts up again.
I also figured out that I can disable bluetooth via "echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/bluetooth_enable".
I want to put that command in a script, that is only executed, when the bluetooth hardware is detected.
Now I'm wondering if any of you guys knows some script, like that.
I've already had a look at the udev files, but I couldn't figure out which one will do the job.
Maybe it's the wrong way and there is a lot easier solution.
Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated,
    David

I do this for disabling Bluetooth on my X220 ThinkPad using Fn + F9.
    I created the file /etc/acpi/actions/bluetooth.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    BT_RFKILL=$(rfkill list | grep tpacpi_bluetooth_sw | sed 's/\([0-9]\+\):.*/\1/')
BT_STATE=$(/usr/sbin/rfkill list $BT_RFKILL | grep "Soft blocked: yes")
    if [ "x" == "x$BT_STATE" ]; then
    /usr/sbin/rfkill block $BT_RFKILL
    else
    /usr/sbin/rfkill unblock $BT_RFKILL
    fi
    exit 0
    And the file /etc/acpi/events/bluetoothconf
    event=button/f24.*
    action=/etc/acpi/actions/bluetooth.sh
    Restart acpid.
    # systemctl restart acpid.service
Now I press Fn + F9 to toggle bluetooth off and on.
Rfkill needs to be installed for this to work.

  • Black shadows appears on bottom of the LCD of my Thinkpad T400 laptop!

There are multiple, technically seven, black shadows appearing on the bottom my lcd like black headlights glowing outwards from the bottom. Sometimes it disappears but now it has appeared agian. I'll be thankful for any suggestion.

    Hi Mehran94,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Display on your ThinkPad T400.
We have verified the image and the issue is related to LCD panel, but I suggest you to check with reseating the LCD cable on both the side which is connected to the LCD panel and also to the system board.
Please click here to visit the link on how to remove the system hardware parts.
    Hope this helps.

  • Issue with assistive access not keeping permissions

Since a recent upgrade (likely from OS X 10.9.x to 10.10.2) I've had issues with Assistive Access blocking Automator and Applescript from interaction with dialogs.
If I run my script or my Automator workflow (which basically has the same script in it) I get the error:
System Events got an error: Automator is not allowed assistive access. (in the case of Automator).
If I open Automator, and then untick and retick the Automator entry in the Accessibility options within Security & Privacy (System Preferences), then workflow can run again. It continues to work until I Quit Automator. Then it's as if OS X no longer trusts Automator to be the same app I gave Accessibility permissions to.  And the situation repeats. It's much as if it were not code-signed. The exact same issue plays out with Apple Script.
I came across this info, which I hoped would solve the problem, but it made no difference: http://macscripter.net/viewtopic.php?id=43394 and http://bit.ly/1x3SRmc
In my Accessibility permissions I now have:
    Script Editor
    Automator
1Password 5 (which the script interacts with)
com.apple.security.agentStub.xpc (in case that's being called up and triggering the Accessibility issue)
osascript (in case that's handling the script and triggering the Accessibility issue)
SecurityAgent.xpc (in case that was triggering the Accessibility issue)
I added all these because the post at http://bit.ly/1x3SRmc     indicated that anything Apple Script is interacting with needs Accessibility access permissions.
    My script is as follows:
    set appName to "SecurityAgent"
set passApp to "1Password 5" (* set this to the name of your password manager *)
    tell application "System Events"
if not (exists window 1 of process appName) then -- test if SecurityAgent window exists
      set answer to display dialog "The password dialog was not found. Please check." buttons {"Ok"}
return -- abort if SecurityAgent window does not exist
      end if
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      set position of window 1 of process appName to {10, 10}
-- move SecurityAgent window out of the way
    end tell
    activate application passApp
    tell application "System Events"
      tell application "SystemUIServer"
      set answer to display dialog "Make sure correct 1Password item is actively selected (i.e. click it again if it was previously selected), then click “Continue” to proceed." buttons {"Continue"}
      end tell
      tell process passApp
(* If you are not using 1Password, you may need to change the menu item clicks, below, to whatever is correct in your particular password manager *)
click menu item "copy password" of menu "item" of menu bar 1
      delay 1
      set appData to the clipboard
      end tell
      tell application "System Events"
      tell process appName
set value of text field 1 of window 1 to appData
if exists (text field 2 of window 1) then
set value of text field 2 of window 1 to appData
if exists checkbox 1 of window 1 then
if value of checkbox 1 of window 1 is 1 then
click checkbox 1 of window 1
      end if
      end if
set value of checkbox 1 of window 1 to 0
      delay 1 (* gives  a moment to see what's going on *)
click button "OK" of window 1
      else
if value of checkbox 1 of window 1 is 1 then
click checkbox 1 of window 1
      end if
      delay 1 (* gives  a moment to see what's going on *)
click button "OK" of window 1
      end if
      end tell
      end tell
    end tell
In Automator it would appear the script is generating an error as soon as it reaches line 5, "if not (exists window 1 of process appName) then"
I would greatly appreciate some assistance in resolving this issue.

Starting with Mavericks, Apple changed the way that the accessibility works (see Using AppleScript with Accessibility and Security features in Mavericks) - each individual application needs to be given access, instead of a global option.  A regular AppleScript application saves properties and global variables with the script, which makes it a new application as far as the system security is concerned, so it needs to be re-added to the accessibility list.  To work with this new security feature, you need to code-sign your AppleScript application or make the script(s) in the bundle read-only so that they don't get changed (note that an AppleScript-based project in Xcode does not modify the application bundle by saving properties and globals).

Need assistance with Windows 2008 R2 server BSOD - ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY (fc)
I have a Windows 2008 R2 server which is experiencing random BSOD during the night. This is occurring maybe once or twice a week. I have gathered two Memory crash files. This server is running Citrix XenApp 6.5 but nothing else is reporting an issue except
for the memory dump. I’m looking for assistance in reading crash file and finding the cause.
I’ve spent over a week going through articles trying to learn and trouble shoot the BSOD but no closer to understanding the WinDbg 6.3.9600 report.
This is a production server and I have verified that Windows Updates has updated the server with latest releases. I’m hoping that the crash file will show something before I have to run the Driver Verifier.
The crash zip file is located -

  • Help on small issues after WinXP downgrade from Vista

    Lenovo 3000 v200
I recently downgraded from Vista to WinXP Professional, and I must say I'm much happier with XP.
Some issues on the install: although I downloaded all drivers from the Lenovo site, the install didn't work from my usb floppy drive.
It recognized the floppy on the F6 portion of the install, but then later it kept asking for the disk to be inserted (it was already in the drive).  Workaround was to install by changing to "compatibility mode" in the BIOS, and after install, loading all drivers and changing BIOS back to SATA.
All features of the laptop appear to work perfectly; camera, fingerprint reader, wifi, etc.
HOWEVER: in the device manager, there are 3 yellow exclamation points in the "Other Devices" section, and each of them is labeled "Base System Device."   Does anyone know what these are?  Why are they not recognized as specific devices?  LenovoCare doesn't recognize them either, and I have no idea what drivers to attempt to install for mystery devices.
Also, "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" won't install.  I have the current driver, and I've tried updating from LenovoCare, but no luck.  As I don't use a modem, this seems irrelevant, but I'd like to install it just the same if possible.
Finally, the LenovoCare recognized a need to install a "Hotkey" update, and it claims to successfully install, but everytime I run LenovoCare it says I need it again.  Any comments or observations?
Again, the computer works just fine even with these small issues.  In fact, it is better than fine; it is a joy to use and a real speed demon with XP instead of Vista.  So I'm not trying to do any rocket science or potentially screw up a very nice situation, but I am trying to iron out these small nuisances.
Thanks to all of you who consider my trivial problems.  I really appreciate having knowledgable individuals like yourselves help out a very modestly skilled, but reasonably ambitious user.
    Cheers,
    Fred

    Hello Fred,
I created a blog on this forum called.... "I Explain How To Downgrade From Vista To XP Successfully On A 3000 N100 Laptop" Locate this message and read through it. Try the "Auto Detect This System" I Talk about. It will load the latest drivers and the latest...BIOS..... for your particular model if you have not already upgraded it. You did not mention if you had upgraded your BIOS...... if your running an  "OLD" version.... THIS..... could be your problem.

    Hi,
As usual, it is strongly recommended to backup all important data prior to upgrading any operating system. It is also strongly recommended to verify all currently used hardware and software with the Windows 7 Compatibility Center.
Depending on if you are moving from Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Vista there are two different types of installations that can be performed when migrating to Microsoft Windows 7.
First, it is important to note that there is not an in-place upgrade from Microsoft Windows XP to Windows 7. Instead of an upgrade, there is a type of installation known as a “custom” installation. This option for installation is also available when moving from Windows Vista. A custom installation will attempt to back up your data files and bring them over to Windows 7 in what is known as a “windows.old” folder however this is considered to be a clean installation. Your applications that were installed prior to Windows 7 will require reinstallation. You may find the following resource Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 helpful.
If moving from Windows Vista, there is an option for an upgrade installation. The upgrade installation must be initiated from within Windows Vista. You may find the following resource Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 helpful.

  • Thinkpad T400S (multitouch) Vs. MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I am recently going to purchase a labtop (for work) and am undecided between the Lenovo T400 S (multitouch) and the Mac Book Pro.
    Advantage Thinkpad (previous experience)
    - My last past 3 laptops are Thinkpad (no defect what so ever)
    - Reliable & Strong (I saw about 3 months ago my baby girl (2yrs) standing on the labtop, & it still works )
    - Multiple OS (Windows and Linux) support
    Advantage MacBook
    - Sleek design (Beautiful)
    - MAC OS + Other OS (Windows, Linux, Unix) Compatibility
    - Presentations style are great
Both are very similar in price (MacBook Pro = Thinkpad +200$ )
    Configuration for both are similar:
    - solid state drive
    - WiFi/WiMax
    - processor very similar
    MacBook advantage:
    - wider screen
    - led screen
    - bigger solid state drive
    T400S advantage:
    - multitouch
    Questions:
    1. Can the T400S support Mac OS? How about Linux (Debian)?
    2. How strong is the casing compared to MacBook Pro or other Thinkpad?
    3. Multitouch compatibility with which OS (Windows, Linux, Unix, MacOS)?
    4. What type of SW works with this multitouch? CAD applications? Google Earth? Office applications? Vi editor?
    5. Can this labtop (in theory) run all these applications: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89sz8ExZndc
    Thanks
    Gus

    1. It probably needs some work around to do so, but it is not natively supported out of the box.
    2. Well you can drive a truck over it, and still relatively undamaged in the hdd, motherboard, etc.... LCD is cracked. Don't think you can do that on a macbook pro. Even dropping a macbook pro is not advisable since the hinge on every generation of Macbooks are so fragile, dropping them could cause the cable in these hinges to break.. oh there is not much adjustability in the Macbook Pro screen hinges, so it can go through the 180 degrees of movement like Thinkpads can.
Oh Macbook Pro have built in battery, and anyone whom ever use laptops and that knows, built in battery is headache, when you need to replace them. And from the past, you can't really when Apple products battery would decide to kick the bucket on you.
It also doesn't have docks. When Macbook Pro dies, it dies, whereas Thinkpads you can take it apart and service themselves relatively easily, and use various parts from other thinkpads to resurrect it. Bit like Frankenstein.
Thinkpad T400s isn't suppose to directly against Macbook Pro, since there are T400 and T500, W500 and W700 to do that.
T400s is basically a X301s with bigger screen, more expansion slots and dock connector (Macbooks don't have them).
Macbook Pro are well designed machines, but they are restrictive in terms of aftermarket parts, serviceability and upgradability. I would also say reliability with Macbook Pro past certain years of use are not great.
