Third party layer over rman like commvault simpana?

My new company is mostly sql server, windows environment and I have been brought in to implement their first Oracle/Linux application.
I am still in the planning stage and am learning about the environment and found out that Commvault is the backup software for the entire company. This backups up all of the servers as well as backup sql server databases. This was actually a surpise to me because I was cataloging all the backup schedules on sql server and here were other backup jobs in the log that I could not account for. It turns out these backup jobs were configured in commvault.
I see that commvault does integrate with Oracle as a layer on top of rman. All I've ever used was RMAN. What would be the reason to use commvault on top of rman? I'm sure it makes using RMAN easier and make things "prettier" and schedulding "easier" but if I already have the knowledge of rman and cron why would I want to use this third party tool?
Basically I'm just trying to prepare to discuss this with the system admins without looking like I'm possesive or not wanting to learn something new.
Thanks for you input!

The "purpose" would be to give a common interface to handling backups and restores. As long as the product is actually using rman under the covers there should be no problem with it.

Actually, it DOES sound like you don't want to learn something new. You should try it first. Give it an honest trial before making any judgements.What do you do if it fails? (I was in that situation once, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. The actual fail was in the tape hardware/3rd party interface for complete restore, but I didn't see that at the time, only later when others ranted on the tubes.) Changing global backup strategy is a b*-and-a-half, politics are inevitable.My response was more social than technical. I'm not a big fan of Commvault, but it could be because the only place that I've worked that used it was the WORST place I've ever worked, and the oracle dba's were the red-headed stepchildren. But the OP, being the new guy in the shop, needs to pick his battles, IMHO, this is one that needs to be deferred until he has the experience with the product to make a legitimate professional recommendation. As it is, he's going to appear exactly as he fears - that he's fighting it because it isn't what he's used to. And in truth, that appearance will be perfectly valid.
( part of my perspective on the OP's position is from the fact that I just started a new job last week myself. Place is very comfortable, and my manger has assured me several times that I am the senior Oracle dba, and the systems are mine to configure to my liking. But I'm still going to spend some time gathering information and learning how they do business before making any major recommendations. I'd say that's a case of "wisdom comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement").

  • Third Party Phone over SIP Trunk with CUCM 9.x

    Hi all,
    I have a problem where my Third Party SIP phones wont go over the SIP trunk configured in my CUCM 9.x cluster. My Cisco phones work fine and goes out the trunk. I have noticed a distinct difference in wireshark with the invite packets from Third Party SIP phones and the Cisco ones.
    I have configured the SIP trunk in CUCM with the following route pattern (60.!#)and configured it with associated group and list. Heres the differense between the invite packets from Cisco and Third Party phones.
    Cisco Phone: INVITE sip.60xxxx%23@ipadress
    Third Party SIP Phone:  INVITE sip:[email protected]
    It seems the Cisco phones gets some extra configured the Third Party ones dont...
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    //Per

    Thanks for the answer
    Yeah i have DNS configured and i have the trunk pointed to a domain destination SRV record and like i said it works fine when calling from a Cisco phone. I tried changing the domain to an ip address but same result. I also changed the Plycom phone from being registered towards the domain of CUCM to an IP adress of CUCM and then the SIP INVITE messages in wireshark began to look kinda the same expet for the "%23" section but it still dont work.
    When i look at the Real Time Data in RTMT the orig and final called from the cisco phone has stripped the 60 and forwared the rest of the number towards the correct domain for the SIP trunk.
    When looking at the data from the Polycom phone the orig and final called data still contains the 60 prefix part and the called device name field is empty.  The termination Cause Code is that the number requested is Unallocated/Unassigned..
    In other words something is missing to get CUCM to strip 60 from the Polycom phones dialed number and send it towards the SIP trunk like it does when the Cisco phones call it.
    Unfortunatley i dont have the meens to attach the trace...
    Thanks again for any help/advice
    With regards, Per.

  • Is screen sharing through Messages limited to third-party accounts in Yosemite like it is in Mavericks?

    So I was told this by an Apple support member through the online chat, but everything else I've been reading seems contradictory. Every blog post I've read, and even Apple's own website makes it seems like you can screen share on Messages with any contact with an iMessage account (in Mavericks, it was limited to third-party accounts signed into Messages like Google, Jabber, AIM, etc...).
    I was able to screen share through the iMessages account if the two computers were on the same network (both on wifi, or both tethered to the same phone), but not if they were on separate networks. Which seems almost next to useless. It'd be nice to just get a breakdown of what's possible with screen sharing through Messages.
    So far it seems like:
    1. Screen sharing is possible using a third-party account (as per in Mavericks).
    2. Screen sharing is possible using an iMessages account only within the same network (added in Yosemite). <- if this is really all that was "added", they really should make that clear, rather than making it seem like iMessage accounts have the same utility as third-party ones.
    Just want someone to confirm this. Thanks!

    Hi,
    Screen Sharing only works with an AIM Account (AOL) or a Jabber ID  when the person at the other end is also using the same sort of Account and a Mac with iChat or Messages.
    The Bonjour Account which is used for LAN based Mac to Mac Chats can also Screen Share.
    The Yahoo account (if you have one) is Text only. It does not even do File Sharing.  It does not do Video Chat, Audio Only ones or Screen Sharing.
    The iMessages account does not do Video chats (or Audio Only)
    What it does do is invoke the FaceTime App.
    FaceTime does not Screen Share.
    Links to the info you have read would be useful.
    The Messages Help info.
    Text (if the pic does not show)
    Share your screen
    You and a friend with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard or later can share a screen, making it easy to collaborate on a project.
    When you share a screen, you and your friend can do anything on the shared desktop, such as opening folders, creating documents, and copying files by dragging them from one desktop to another. Messages automatically starts an audio chat.
    You can share screens using AIM, Jabber, Google Talk, and Bonjour. You can’t share screens using Yahoo! or iMessage.
    Important: When you share your screen, your friend has the same access to your computer that you have. Share your screen only with people you trust, and be careful if you receive a request to share your screen from someone who isn’t in your buddy list. If the request comes from someone using Bonjour, remember that the name shown for the person in Bonjour does not necessarily match the person’s real name.
    See the Line above the one where the word "important" is in bold text.
    OS X 10.5 is the one with iChat 4.x.x with it.
    To be clear:-
    iChat 1 was an AIM client but also had the Bonjour account under it's previous name of Rendezvous
    iChat 3 added Jabber capabilities
    iChat 6 added Yahoo ones. (extremely limited)
    Messages brings the Name change and the focus on the iMessages account with the associated window changes.
    This means Messages can join 5 "services"
    Opening Messages asks you for an Apple ID to register with iMessages.
    It also has the Bonjour account present but not turned On.
    You can add anything you used in iChat
    Some Apple Issued ID are valid AIM Screen Names
    GoogleTalk and Facebook Chat IDs works as Jabber IDs
    Apple IDs
    These can be considered in some ways to be separated into different functions or layers.
    The first difference is between external emails and Apple Issued ones that end in @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com  (Some people are using a small number of pre Email linked Apple IDs - about 15 years or older accounts.)
    The Apple Issued ones can be used as AIM Screen Names.
    You can also distinguish between iCloud Linked ones and plain Apple IDs
    As Apple changed from MobileMe to iCloud they used  and linked @me.com IDs to iCloud as people registered for iCloud.
    Later they issued iCloud ending emails  (you may have both)
    This leaves you with "All iCloud IDs are Apple IDs, but not all Apple IDs are iCloud ID ones".
    The short answer is if an Account in Messages can Video within the app (not invoke another app) then it can Screen Share.

  • SceneBuilder:integrate third party components and layouts like MigLayoutFX?

    Would it be possible to add third party libraries to the SceneBuilder classpath to support additional layout managers like MigLayoutFX?

    Ultimately, yes. We are designing scene builder based on the ideas that went into JSR 273, the design time API for JavaBeans. As such, we're abstracting everything layout manager specific out of the tool and into "DesignInfo" classes, such that the tool will not have any specific knowledge of the layout containers, such that 3rd party layout containers could write a DesignInfo and associated classes and plug right into the SceneBuilder.
    This is a work in progress and is not likely to be really ready until 2013 at the earliest. Right now the team is working hard to productize the scene builder for a GA release, and take the lessons we learn to flesh out the DesignInfo APIs.

  • Why would a third party image-caching program like Thumbs Plus display thumbnails for only some PDFs

    . . . and not for other PDFs, if all of the PDFs have their page thumbnails embedded in them using Acrobat Standard or Professional?

    An Acrobat specific user forum may not be the optimal place to ask about the why-n-whatfore of a third party software.
    Perhaps the application you are using has a vendor support site or user community?

  • "Get Info" third-party app that works like...

    Since XRay is nolonger supported in Mountain Lion I was wondering whether anyone has found a substitute that will do the following...
    Be accessible via the contextual menu (i.e. supports Services)
    Be capable of changing the dates of an alias... not just the original file.
    FileXaminer works fine, but it cannot alter the dates of an alias.
    File Matey can alter the dates of an alias, but it cannot appear in the contextual menu since it doesn't support Services.

  • Noding and third party plugs

    Is there a legal reason behind why apple will not allow 3rd party plug ins to be noded or are they just being cnuts?

    That would require separate development. Receptor continually updates to add new plugins. Logic would have to do the same, and while I think this would be cool, I'd rather reserve their development time for internal issues more.
    On a side note I think the need for this with third party plugins over logic plugs is because thirdparty plugs tend to be less CPU efficient than Logic ones. I use to use a lot of third party plugs, but these days I've just been studying Logic's more. I know for things like BFD it's hard but, hey compare the CPU of BFD with a well built Ultrabeat set.

  • Third party customization: item category TAS

    Dear experts,
    I am customizing third party process. I copied item category TAS and schedule line category CT. Ideally this item category is relevant for order related billing. I changed it to delivery related billing so that I can combine this item with other items(TAN,TAK) into one invoice during billing. At PGI for item with item category TAS, a new document called confirmation of service appears in the document flow. Where does this document come from? When I click on it, a message appears that no document exists, why is that so? How do I set the number range for this document and where do I locate it since it is not in the sales document types in SPRO?
    Thank you in advance and looking forward to your answers

    Dear Benjamin
    Why you take CT instead of CS here--can you please brief us.
    Normally this second letter "T" used for No-Inventory management.
    (In third party Inventories cannot be--made you to think like)
    But Please compare AT/BT/CT Vs CS--you will get the underlying problem of field which are compulsary in Third party processing..(like order type,Account assignment category)
    Hope this helps.

  • Third Party logistics and scenario

    Hello all,
    I am working on WM and would like to know more about third party processing. i would like to know the WM scenarios in which third party
    logistics is used. is there any specific examples for third party logistics. Pl. advise in detail.
    Thanks,
    Maxx

    Hi,
    The meaning of Third party process in SAP is that you fulfill the demand of your customer by ordering the goods from your vendor and arranging the shipment from your vendor directly to your customer.
    Since in this process your goods won't received in your WH, there's no point in speaking about WM scenario of third party processing.
    Did you think of this third party process:

  • How to send HTTP Post to URL (third party software) in JSP/JSPDynpage

    Hello,
    we want to integrate a third party application in our Portal Component (JSPDynpage using JSP and HTMLB). This third party component is called like this:
    http://servername:port/cgi-bin/cgi.exe?request=map&format=html&swldy_ace=GDF&swldy_image_format=p n g&width=525&height=375
    How can we do this in the JSP using HTMLB?
    Thanks for your help.
    Best regards,
    Daniel

    Hi Detlev,
    thanks for your hint regarding the App. Integrator, but it seemn not to be what we want to do: We call a CGI and get a JEPG Image back as request.
    Now we used the java.net.URLConnection to do the HTTP post in the JSPDynpage:
    // send HTTP POST
    try {
      u = new URL("http://server/path/ourcgi.exe");
    } catch(MalformedURLException ex) {
      System.err.println("MalformedURLException");
    // build query sting
    String query = "request=plot&format=jpeg&template_name=......."
    int cl = query.length();
    try {
      // open the connection and prepare it to POST
      URLConnection uc = u.openConnection();
      uc.setDoOutput(true);
      uc.setDoInput(true);
      uc.setAllowUserInteraction(false);
      DataOutputStream dos = new DataOutputStream(uc.getOutputStream());
      dos.writeBytes(query);
      dos.close();
    } catch ...

  • Third Party scenario - Fixed vendor.

    Hi All.
    In third party scenario, I would like to restrict the customer's receibles  with perticular vendor only. Is it possible in third party scenario?
    Example: In Sales order - We can view the purchase requisition. System sutomatially pick only Y vendor for X customer in purchase requisition. How we can maintain this relation ship in Third party scenario. Like this I need to maintain for so many customers with Vendors.
    Thanks & regards
    Ugamesh.

    Dear All,
    I think, We are deviating from the requirement. My question is very clear. I want to fix the  vendor for certain customers in third party scenario. For your information I have MM consultants are with me.
    I could not understand how source list and Vendor info record will bring the vendor in to purchase requisition as per customer?.
    Example: I have customer master 1000, 1001. I have vendor masters 2000, 2001. I want to fix 2000 for 1000 and 2001 for 1001in third party sales. How can we do it through Source list and Vendor info records?
    Could you please elborate it? Even my MM consultants are not able to understand linking vendors and customers through source list and info records.
    Thanks & regards
    Ugamesh.

  • Third Party Vista Drivers that w

    If you want my advice, stop waiting for creative to ship drivers and get the third party drivers over at the kX Project Site. Unlike Creative they're actually releasing beta drivers for Vista and whats more they offer advanced settings that creative will never release in their drivers.
    The site is here:
    http://kxproject.com/
    The first thing to check out is to make sure the driver supports your model:
    http://kb.kxproject.lugosoft.com/list.html
    You'll notice there is even support for cards that creative have officially announced that there is no planned vista support for.
    The latest beta drivers (version 3538l at time of post) that have Vista support are here:
    http://www.driverheaven.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=74.
    A note of warning, these drivers are aimed at professional audiophiles (the exact ones creative seem to snub these days) and so the amount of settings may be a little overwhelming, but trust me, it's worth the learning curve. But hey, being Vista early adopters you're probably a bit savvy anyway.
    Personally I've found the kX drivers drivers much more stable on my configuration. As an example, I have a Creative Audigy card in my docking bay and the creative drivers prevent my laptop from undocking (eventually causing vista to blue screen). The kX drivers on the other hand close correctly and allow my laptop to be undocked.
    My personal opinion is that the result of Creative not running a proper public beta system is that the Creative drivers will be largely incompatible with many hardware configurations on release. Sure they may have the drivers going nicely with their own in house hardware but the advantage of public betas is that you are able to test on a huge install base of weird and wonderful configurations.
    I'd bet that as an example the creative drivers still cause problems with docking stations when they're finally released for Vista. Mark my words!
    I sincerely hope you all get your cards working well with Vista and these drivers. If you do please make a reply to this thread stating so. This way Creative have a record of the number of users that have given up hope on them. The added side affect will be to keep this thread towards the top of the message board for others to see.

    For SBLi've, EMU APS, Audigy, Audigy2 and SB 52 cards?uhh . . I don't see Xfi on the list in the driver. Am I missing something?

  • Registering a third party XAResource with WLS TM

    The WebLogic 6.x documentation for registering third party XA resources
              contains the following code snippet: -
              XAResource res = ... // Resource provider's implementation of XAResource
              How do you get a providers implementation?
              Where is this documented?

    7.0 is great however there are those of us out here who have spent hundreds of
              thousands of dollars using weblogic 6.x and are struggling through getting 2pc
              to work with different vendors. I would strongly suggest that BEA provide
              detailed documentation which consists of the following for 6.1 and greater and
              not put off till tomorrow solving the problems we as your customers have today
              Detailed setup information for
              1. IBM MQ
              2. Firano
              3. Sybase
              4. Oracle
              5. MS SQL Server
              With examples which work I mean full examples which show the following:
              1. Using JDBC to update a dbms on one connection pool and
              having a message sent to another XA resource which is persistent
              all part of a single transaction
              2. Using two connection pools two different servers doing simple
              updates/inserts using a single transaction
              3. Specific version numbers tested I know for sybase you mention their
              JConnect 5.2.1 but there is only 5.2 with EBF's and 5.5 with EBFs
              which specific sybase server version not just 12.x but 12.x with the
              following
              EBF's applied same for jdbc driver with complete example.
              It seems some of the more complicated operations are the least documented
              which is the inverse of what we as users would expect.
              We have spent probably 8-9 days with our dbas and myself trying to get item
              #2 above to work. Rob Wollen has helped in that it seems my sybase config is
              correct on weblogic but we still havent solved the problem. Perhaps it wont
              work
              with Sybase Jconnect 5.2 or 5.5 with 12.0 version of their product??
              I had also opened up a case back last october which totally was non-productive.
              So please please dont wait on new versions to fix documentation issues which
              are present today.
              thanks Larry
