Third Party Patching Recommendations

What Products are you using?  What are the Pro/Cons of the products you are using?  What do you recommend?
We are looking at SolarWinds, Shavlik, Lumension... Thoughts?

You could have a look at SCUP, but that still requires a lot of manual work for everything except Adobe products. Third party products will definitely make your life a bit easier. Another product for your list should be Secunia.

  • Third party patches for XP

    Hi,
we have a big amount of XP machines. From April we suppose to receive XP patches from forest level IT.
So I have no choice, but connect to upstream server. I don't like this idea because of loosing full control of my clean WSUS.
My intention is to ask patches when available from top level WSUS admin for publishing them through my WSUS.
I never used publishing of third party patches.
Please point me to procedure for doing that. What should be the format of the patch file?
    Thanks.

    Hi pob579,
You really should consider to change your XP computers for more recent computers (With Windows 7 or 8).
You can update third-party applications using Wsus, but you won't be able to patch Microsoft products.
You can use some useful softwares to patch 3rd party apps :
    - Free Applications (open source) :
              - Local Update Publisher (http://localupdatepubl.sourceforge.net/fr/index.html)
              - Wsus Package Publisher (http://wsuspackagepublisher.codeplex.com/)
    - Commercial Applications :
              - Patch Manager from Solarwinds (http://www.solarwinds.com/solutions/microsoft-wsus-patch-management.aspx)
              - Corporate Software Inspector from Secunia (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/corporate/help/sfw.csiwsusconfiguration/)

  • Third Party Patches

I know there has been lots of question in regards to third party patching. But I see SCUP can only be used for free catalog file like Adode. Wondering what would be the best approach,  If I am planning to patch Chrome, Mozilla, Java etc. Have anyone
done any research on this. Are we going to get cab file for all this product?
I see large number of software like secunia, lumension, shavlik, SolarWinds etc...Any more insight and help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
You could have a look on the following blog which talks about Java client updates deployments using WSUS/SCCM/SCUP from an MSI file.

  • Need Third Party software recommendation - duplicates management and remova

I have read several dozen discussions addressing duplicate file/song removal from itunes, and many recommend third party software. While there is a 'show exact duplicates' command in itunes at Shift:File->Show exact duplicates, in my case all it did was show all of my songs, 8,440 instead of the actual 4,220 that are in my library. I'm not sure of the purpose of this command, perhaps it works for someone but not me.
Absent the ability to add a user defined column in itunes that would have the capability to perform an Excel-like function to number each row, allowing the sorting of odd/even numbers or some such scheme, I guess users with thousands of songs who have fallen into the duplication trap are required to purchase third party software to correct this, or just go ahead an begin whatever medical procedures purport the relief of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Does anyone have recommendations of software they have actually used, paid, share or free?
    Thanks.

Would that I be so lucky! I reinstalled my Vista OS and was adding back all of the programs and data, so all of the music had the same 'date added'. However, I have just this moment solved my own problem. Here is what worked for me:
    1. I downloaded freeware from the website LCIBrosSolutions.com which does indeed identify duplicates in the iTunes file and will erase them.
    2. However, now you are stuck with broken links (i.e. "!" songs) in your iTunes, and need to eliminate them. What I did was go into the View choices, and picked something that I would never use. In my case, I picked "Episode Number" and added it as a column. Then, I went to "select all" and highlighted all 8000+ song names. Right clicking gave me "Get Info" after the warning, and then I went to the video tab and entered the number 4. I un-highlighted, sorted on the Episode Number Column, and since the song names with no real content would not accept the number 4, they were at the bottom, and were all duplicates. I deleted them.
The way to verify that you do indeed have broken links is to sort by song name, and see that every other one does have an ! by it.

  • Third party battery recommendation

    Hi all,
I am thinking about buying a new battery for my 15" Powerbook (FW 800). Anyone have recommendations for a good third party battery? I've found numerous references to the NuPower battery (though, does it matter that it's 11.1 V instead of 10.8 V?):
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAP15AL4800/
I've also found this battery from needbattery.com which has the highest amp hours I've seen (5.85), though since some manufacturers report Watt-hours instead it's hard to compare :
    http://tinyurl.com/etwr2
There is also this interesting (and perhaps more environmentally friendly?) option of refilling the battery):
    http://tinyurl.com/gny4s
Any thoughts/recommendations? I'm clearly not so saavy on the battery issue. Thanks for any advice.
    Powerbook 15   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.25 GHz, 768 MB RAM

How many time have you run battery reset? Mine took 4 times before the recall test tool showed I qualify.
You need to install Power manager.
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-62928.html
    Once installed preform a reset
Lenovo Power Manager > Advanced > Battery Tab > Battery Maintenance > Preform Reset
I had to preform 4 resets before the battery biagnostic tool saw the bad battery and I was able to get a recall replacement. The reset build a log of the battery problem and the diagnostic tool uses that log to decide if you get a replacement.

  • Intune & Third Party Software Automatic Updates

Can Windows Intune ensure third party software such as Java, Adobe Reader, & Flash is updated? I at-least want an email when a PC has an out of date version of the above software. If Windows Intune can't do
    this, any recommendations?
We're a small business that simply uses Windows Intune and Office 365. Recently a PC had a vulnerable/out of date version of Java and visited a compromised site, resulting in a nasty virus. Obviously I don't want this to happen again.
Update: I ended up using GFI Cloud's patch management to address the lack of automatic third party patching in Windows Intune.

That requires manually uploading patch files for third party software daily... I'm looking for something that can automatically update common third party software that cause major security concerns, or at-least notify me when they are out of date.

  • 3rd Party Patching

Looking for some compare and contrast from people familiar with 3rd Party Patching venders.  I have been running our ConfigManager Environment for 3 years now after migrating from a really bad Competing Product (Client Automation).  My Information
Assurance group has recently decided that we are not reactive enough or fast enough with third party patch so management is considering 3rd Party Patching addons suchs as Skavlik and Solar Winds Patch manager or other competing Products like IBM Endpoint Manager
    (BigFix) and Dell KACE.
    So my question is if you have used any of these;
what was the Catalog like, and how well did the patches preform?
    What was the cost (guestiment)
Anything special that you liked (or didn't like ) about the product?
I'm trying to build a good/competitive case and make a well informed decision, I'm attempting to download and play with as many of these as I can, but as I'm sure most of you know... It takes time which is something we lack a great deal of.
Thanks in advanced for any input and/or opinions!

I used this one before: "VMware vCenter Protect Update Catalog" (formely known as Shavlik)
Most customers however choose to deploy monthly MSP files to update products instead of using SCUP functionality. Reason will be probably complexity and license costs.
Within SCUP you can add catalogs (vendors), approve patches, and synchronize them to SCCM. After that you can use Automatic deployment rules (or manually approval once again) to deploy them to endpoints. Nice thing is that 3rd party patches will be available
in SCCM. Bad thing is you have another console for approving updates. Customers wants to have less consoles as possible.

  • A third party plug-in disappears after a localization patch installation

I have a third party plug-in installed for PhotoShop CS3.
The third party plug-in disappears after installation of a localization
patch. I tried reinstalling the plug-in, but that does not work.
It appears that after the patch is installed, tw10428.dat maps
the English texts on the menu to Korean.
    "$$$/Menu/Help/AboutPhotoshop=Photoshop 정보(&A)..."
    "$$$/Menu/Help/AboutPlugin=플러그-인 정보(&B)"
    "$$$/Menu/Help/Contents=Photoshop 도움말(&H)..."
    "$$$/Menu/Help/Home=Photoshop 온라인(&O)..."
And somehow, the third party plug-in disappears because it's not mapped
in the .dat file. I tried manually editing the file and to input
entries for the third party tool and that does not seem to work.
Do you know how I can resolve this issue?
    Thanks in advance.
    Stephen Moon
    [email link deleted]

    Chris,
How can I install it correctly? It is
The plug-in was working fine before the patch. The patch
is just an executable which I ran after I closed Photoshop.
There wasn't any error message and the instance of Photoshop
works fine when I re-run it other than the fact that the plug-in
is no longer in the menu.

  • Is there a place for recommendations of third-party apps?

There used to be a place on here to talk about anything at all, but I don't see that now, so I don't know where to ask this question.
It would be nice to have a place to exchange recommendations of 3rd-party software that provides applications not addressed in Apple products.
For example, the old will-maker program I used with OS 9 does not work on OS X. Quicken makes a great one, but it only runs on Windows, and I don't want to get involved with running Windows on my Mac just for that.
If there is a place on here or anywhere else on the web where Mac users exchange recommendations of third-party apps, I would appreciate any details.
And, of course, if anyone has a specific recommendation for a will-maker program, that would be great too.
    Many thanks.

    a brody:
I'm sorry but I find your response just a tad parental.
You suggest navigating "the entire board" before asking "for too much," even as you go on to recognize how huge and unwieldy it is. I think most of us give it a good shot, exhausting a reasonable amount of search results, before posing a question. And it seems to me that your "given there are resources" could apply to anything at all that one might ask on here. All the answers came from somewhere; a person could go those "resources" instead! The point of these forums, I think, is to help and assist, in a reasonable manner according to reasonable guidelines.
What is the point of making suggestions, if the attitude is "don't you think the moderators have enough work on there (sic) hands"?
When you say "using the forums give plenty of chance to find the right application," well, I just wonder where you would suggest one ask something like "Can anyone recommend a good third-party slideshow application?" I have a hunch that no matter what forum a person plugged that into, someone such as yourself might chastise him for posting off subject!
That is why my point was to ask what happened to the section that used to entertain miscellaneous questions on almost any topic. And it is why I wished aloud for a section where types of (third party) applications could be posted. That would NOT mean, as you seem to suggest, that suddenly a topic for every conceivable kind of application would be created.
And finally, if you think all the information I hope for is already in the forums, or could be asked about and supplied in the existing forums, then I wonder how you think moderators would be additionally overburdened merely because the same stuff was simply more organized and easier to find.
Forgive me if I sound overly defensive, but it seemed to me your response was a bit of a putdown and not very constructive.

  • Anybody have a recommendation on a third party disk utility, performance enhancing software?

Anybody have a recommendation on a third party disk utility, performance enhancing software?

What performance are you wanting to enhance on your MacBook Air?
OSX does its own routine maintenance, usually at night. You can run those scripts during the day using Onyx, Cocktail or similar utilities.
The best performance procedure is to keep your software updated, repair permissions using Disk Utility, and not fill your hard drive to capacity (keep about 15% free).

  • Recommended third-party SSD brands

Looking for recommendations for third-party SSD manufacturers to switch from my MBP Mid-2010 13'" internal hard drive. What have been your experiences to switching to a solid-state drive from a Mac originally bought with regular hdd's?

It will benefit, but not as much because it only has a 3.0 Gb/s bus. You need a 6.0 Gb/s bus to get the maximum capabilities of the SSDs made for that bus. The vendors you mention are all highly reliable.
Note that if you install it yourself then you lose all future support from Apple.

  • Does anyone recommend a third party app called siri-for-iphone-4?

I saw a third party app called siri-for-iphone-4 which is supposed to add siri to older iphone 4, but do not know if it is suitable or useable.

Is it an app that you can download from the App Store? If it is not, it would require that you jailbreak your phone which would void your warranty. Definitely not worth it, in my opinion.l
