Additional informaton about OS X security can be found in Thomas Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
In addition to what Bimmer 7 Series has suggested...
Keep Java (not JavaScript) disabled in all your browsers and if you have not installed it yet, don't do so unless you are told that you need it in order to run a critical application or visit a web-site that you must use.
You won't need your Firewall turned on as long as you are on a trusted network using a strong WPA2 password for WiFi, such as your home or workplace, but be sure to turn it on when you need to take your MBP to Starbucks or some other public hotspot.

Not unless you're running Windows on it; just keep Mac OS X up to date and use common sense before doing anything.

  • This is my first mac, it is a macbook pro. i restarted it but when it started back up i saw a white screen and then it prompted me to insert the reboot disk. anyone else have this problem?

I recently bought a Macbook Pro, this is my first Mac. I restarted it, but when it started back there was a plain white screen and then it prompted me to insert the reboot disk. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to do this manually like with PC's?

The new Mac's came with OS X Lion 10.7 and there are no boot disks.
Since it's so new, take it back to the Apple Store and let them deal with it.
If not you can hold Command and r (as in rotten) keys down and boot the computer.
You'll be presented with a several options, including one to reinstall OS X Lion provided you have a Apple ID, which means you have to use Safari in there to set one up. To do that you need to set up a email account with Google or Yahoo. Once you get the ID, then you can download Lion and reinstall it.
It's so stupid not having a copy of the OS on hand to perform your own repairs.
Of course Apple will be happy to sell you a $69 Lion USB stick.
Like I said, take it back to the store, and try to get your money back, that will force them to think about just giving you a replacement machine that works.
Lion doesn't work really but it can be acceptable until the patches get released.

I purchased keynote, numbers, and pages when i bought my macbook air in late september. the december update will not load because it says i do not own the software and returns an error messgae 100. i have read manuals and looked over the web but i cannot figure out how to get this software update to identify that i do own these three pieces of software. they are installed and usable. any ideas would be appreciated before i call apple support.
This is my first mac so i am still learning...
    thanks

First, make sure you are logged into the App Store with the same AppleID that you used to purchase the apps.
If that is not it, look in the App Store under Purchases. Are they there?
If not, go into your account in App Store and click the link to show hidden purchases.
If they are still not there, use the support link in the App Store.
If they do show up, copy all the apps to an external drive, then remove them from your Mac. Go to the App Store, Purchases, and install from there.

I bought  my MacBook Pro in 2010. This is the first Mac I have owned and recently it is having some difficulty loading we pages, often timing out. This Mac environment is entirely different for me and I am not sure where to begin troubleshooting and/ or clean-up. I have moderate computer skills and try not to download or access questionable material, however recently I visited the Ap Store and purchased a couple of different aps to use in record keeping and for making a flyer. I am not even sure how to remove these programs to see if it helps.
Any tips or tricks are appreciated.
    Thank you!

Time to see about the PRAM battery.
By the way iOS and OS X are different systems.
iOS is the operating system for iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch.
Mac OS X is the operating system for Mac labelled computers.

I just purchase an iMac and an HP LaserJet M1217nfw printer.  I could not install with the installation disk that was furnished by HP.  This is my first Mac product and I'm just not sure what I'm doing...help!  I don't know if it's a mountain lion, a tiger, or a dog!  The box says OS X. I really need help.  Thanks for your time.

What Mac operating system are you running on your iMac?
    Are you certain they're compatible?
Have you checked with HP to see if there's a newer driver?
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=4 075472
In addition, I haven't loaded on any software with my last 3 printers.  They just work without them, IMHO.
But a current driver would be necessary.

How did you get your songs onto your iPod Touch?
If purchase directly from iTunes you can download them again.
If your iPod is synced to iTunes on a Windows PC, then, sync your iPod to that computer.
If this is your first Mac, are you migrating from a Windows PC?

  • My macbook says it has 108.3GB used for backups.  Why is that?  I'm running out of GB and would like to free some space up. Thanks. BTW this is my first mac.

My Macbook pro keep running out of space.  I have my iPhoto library's on an external hard drive and I backup my mac to a separate hard drive.  But I noticed today that in my "about my mac" it says I am using over 108GB for backups!  What is that?  How do I fix it?  This is my first mac.
Thanks so much for the help.
    Lisa

If you have Time Machine enabled, then those are Time Machine snapshots. They will be deleted automatically if the space is needed. You can also do this:
    About Time Machine local snapshots
    Time Machine Snapshots
Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and enter or paste the appropriate command line. Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed. Press RETURN again.
To turn them ON: sudo tmutil enablelocal
To turn them OFF: sudo tmutil disablelocal
Note that turning them OFF will also delete all existing snapshots.
For more about snapshots see: OS X Mountain Lion- About local snapshots.

Migrate your Windows files or system to your Mac

  • This is my first MAC.

this is my first MAC.  i Can't get to work via my netWORK printer.  I have 3  WINDOWS PC's on the net and they work fine. It's an old printer (HP Laser Jet 2200 PCL) but the drivers are in the OS and supported. it works via a linksys print server (also old).  everything is wired

See the printer's documentation for how to set up on a print server. I'm supposing you need to use an IP address of the print server unless the print server uses DHCP in which case you can configure the printer to use DHCP (if supported.)
And, you can contact HP tech support for help.

Try using ClamXav 2.2.4. If you are not now using a hardware router I highly recommend you do so. Preferably use Ethernet for your local network. If you use wireless be sure it's protected by using WPA2 security.
Use your head and don't download something when you don't know what it is, what it does, or where it's from. Stay off of unknown websites and don't click links if you think you're not sure what will happen.

I downloaded some home movies onto my IMac but could not find a way to burn them to a DVD.  Does Apple have software to do this or do I need to purchase one.  If so, what is recommended.

but could not find a way to burn them to a DVD.
Do you want to create a video DVD that will plan on a TV set via a DVD player or just burn the video files to a data DVD disk for storage?
If the former the read the following:
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
However, there are video DVD authoring apps that are available at the App Store that will create a video DVD disk.  They won't be as extensive as iDVD but can create a simple video DVD.
iDVD 7.1.2 is compatible with iDVD but we don't if it will be with the next system generation.

  • Does a Mac don't really need an anti-virus? Is it really a virus free?

Does a Mac don't realyy need an anti-virus? Is it really a virus free? If not what is the recomended anti-virus for MacBook?

Thomas A Reed's site provides everything you need to know.  I just want to re-affirm one part (and this is also on Thomas's site)... just because OS X is fairly resistant to viruses, that does not mean you can do whatever you want without any concerns.  For the most part, you'll be safe if you don't actually authorize something to be installed (with a few exceptions).  You won't typically need to worry about getting a virus just by visiting a website or opening an email.  However, once you give authorization for something to be installed, it can do pretty much anything.  We've done a great job as a community at touting the security of OS X (and it is very secure), but that has led a lot of less technical people to think that they can do anything without worry.  If you download something through a torrent site (or other unknown source) and install it, you've given that application full access to your system.  Even if the program you download appears to be what you expected it to be, additional malicious code could have been inserted and you would never know.  I also like to point out that the concept of torrents unto itself is not bad.  Plenty of companies distribute their software via torrents.  It's particularly useful for smaller companies as it can take a significant amount of bandwidth demand off of their servers.  However, you should only use the torrent link directly from the developer's site, not from a torrent search engine.
