Threads versus Running Requests

Hi guys.  I adminster a mix of MX6, MX7 and version 8 ColdFusion servers.  I know that version 8 has some nice monitoring options included which will allow an admin to see how many CF threads are currently in use, etc.  But I have a need to monitor the number of threads being used concurrently on some of our MX7 servers.  I don't need to do this in real time, however, so I was thinking about setting up some of the CF/jrun performance counters.  I see that there's a counter called "Running Requests" and I'm wondering if this is the same as concurrent threads.  Does anyone know?  I'm aware of a few of the 3rd party CF monitoring tools out there, but I'm trying to avoid spending the money if possible.  Thanks.

Thanks for the reply rajeshkc.  I'm not real familiar with profilers, as my CF developers handle the majority of the CF setup and much of the CF-specific administration, but I'll look into this as an option.  With that said, however, is it safe to assume that the "running requests" counter is not equivalent to concurrent threads?

  • Why "slow server alert" when NO running requests and NO open connections??

    The snapshot below says it all.  Why on earth would my dev machine with no running requests, and no open database connections, kick off a slow server alert?
    I will tell you that at the exact same time this snapshot was generated, my other two servers WERE hung and were reporting "Unresponsive alerts", and they connect to the same databases.  I am chasing down a chronic communication failure between our database and web servers where everything with a databae connection gets locked/hung at the same time every night, 7 days a week.  The hang lasts anywhere from a few mins to 40+ mins.
    Is this why my dev server would report slow?  And if so, is it the skimmers or what that's causing a slow server alert??  Would it only report "Unresponsive" if there were actual page requests hanging, vs. a "Slow Server Alert"?
    This is CF10 (update 12) 64-bit on Windows 2008 R2, IIS 7, connecting to separate Oracle 11g server.

    I'm pretty sure the problem here is somehow related to my other post, but for shites and grins I would still like to know how I can receive a Slow Server alert when no actual page requests are running and it says there are 0 open connections to any of the datasources.

  • Performance: Reports Builder versus Running on mid tier report server.

    Folks are wondering why a report takes 15 minutes when running on the middle tier report server, paper layout, pdf output displayed via adobe, versus running the paper layout from a laptop within Reports Builder.
    Any thoughts about the performance differences we now face with the 3 tier set up or suggestions on what we might tweak?

    unfortunately your post did not specify what the difference in performance is and whether you are connecting to the same database and what platform your deployment environment as oppsed to your dev environment is.
    there are certainly some performance differences expected if the depoloyment platform is significantly different from the development paltform, but those differences should not be significant.
    there are certain things that might cause performance differences (e.g. graphs in reports, using DISPLAY vs. DEFAULT_DISPLAY on unix platforms, etc.) so knowing a bit more about your platform would be helpful.
    also it would be interesting to know if you see a similar degredation with other reports or even the test.rdf that comes with the product. last, but not least, have you tried to deploy your report to the OC4J that comes with the developer suite ? if so, do you see timings similar to the builder or more to your app server execution times ?

    Probably a good question for ForumNokia. If you mean start up a thread and run in the background while your MIDlet UI does other things, then sure, why not. If you mean that you want to exit your MIDlet, but leave a thread running in the background, then I don't believe you can do this on series 40. S60 is another story since it supports multiple tasks.

    at the start of line 14, the previous callers thread is dead & now a new thread is created that belongs to the caller on line 14... etc.

    well, i realize at the end there would be 4 threads but im trying to get my head around this explanation in the book:
    "A program launches a threads executioin by calling the threads start method, which in turn call the run method. After start launches the thread, start returns to tis caller immediately. The caller then executes concurrently with the lauched thread." there fore if i have 2 concurrent processes, are there 2 threads running????

We create a responsibility for our payroll user and assign modified menu and Glb Shrms Process and Reports request group to it. We set the profile options (HR:Business Group, HR:Security Profile and HR:User Type) on this responsibility. when we are going to run payroll from this responsibility then on Payroll Run request the LOV of Payroll parameter doesn't show values.     i don't recall the details, but you have to add a hidden forms function to your menu, so that the concurrent inherits the settings of the caller, so that the LOV's of your concurrent behave.
    Look into the seeded responsibilities, and look for a hidden forms function like multiform or so.
    If it is this, then the issue has nothing to do with 12.0.6 , but is linked to the fact you build your custom menu from scratch.

  • Error "No Managers" When run Requests

    In oracle 11i General Ledger I find No Managers error when run Requests after posting a journal or any other task. So I deactivated the Managers and Try to activate again. But the activate option is in not active. I am not able to update sleep cycles and no prograrammes to run.

  • Stopping a thread from running

    Hai
         I am new to java. It would be helpful for me if someone helps me out in doing this.
         Actually in my program ,I should
    i. Find out whether a particular file exists in the given directory or not.
    ii. If the file doesn't exist, my program should wait for certain timeframe and check for the same file again.
    iii. If the program cannot find the required file within the timeout specified, my application should exit.
         I have done (i) and (ii) using threads. But in the case of (iii), I came to know that stop() method is depricated.
         I am providing my code for a better understanding. Could you please let me know, what would be the best way to stop the thread from running after the timeout is reached in my program?

    Actually your use of threads is a difference which makes no difference. The JVM starts an initial thread and runs your main(), at the end of which you start a thread and return. So you've just replaced one thread with another. There's no parallel processing.
    The t.run() at the end of your run() method won't work. A particular Thread object can only run once. It will give you an IllegalStateException.
    I can't see how multi-threading will help you with this task at all, all you need is a simple loop with a Thread.sleep in it.
    If you really want to use a separate thread or Timer to implement a timeout (as an exercise) then use Thread.interrupt() to wind up a thread. The looping thread should test with Thread.interrupted() in it's loop condition, if it's in sleep() when interrupted an InterruptedException will be thrown which you should catch and allow to break the loop and let the thread terminate.
    So your loop structure looks like:

    I'd suggest using a java.util.Timer to launch your time-out and leave the loop on the main thread started by the JVM.

  • ThreadPoolExecutor and using priority to determine what threads will run

    I am fairly new to Java, so I apologize if there is an obvious answer.
    The ThreadPoolExecutor is a great class for thread management. What I would like to do is have a priority scheme that would determine what thread should be run next. For example, let's say I have 100 threads and a limit of 20 threads. Each thread that is executed should have a mechanism to indicate a priority. When a thread becomes available in the pool, the priority value should be checked to determine which thread to run. This would allow me to get important tasks completed quickly. Right now it appears that there is a FIFO order to threads. I tried wrapping the runnable object in a Thread, but that didn't seem to have an effect.
    I am using a Fixed thread Pool:

    What are you trying to prioritize? The order on which tasks come off the work queue, or the order in which they get completed?
    Doing the first is simple but restricted. Your tasks are Comparable and define their own priority and you use a PriorityBlockingQueue. But you are restricted to using the execute() method with Runnable's that are Comparable. submit() will wrap the task in a FutureTask that isn't Comparable and so will cause a ClassCastException.
    Doing the second is difficult. Even if your threads have different priorities then don't queue for tasks in priority order, so the thread priority when taking a task is irrelevant. You could change the thread priority based on the priority of the task once it starts executing. But Thread priorities are only a hint to the scheduler that you think Thread A is more important than Thread B. On some platforms priorities will have little observable effects - whereas on other it can be drastic if you use priorities that are too high or too low.     Why you want to post the depreciation for future period?
    Is the future fiscal year in open or is the posting period open for that? If no, please open that period with AJRW T code if you want to post the depreciation for future period but it is not recommendable.
    Check the posting period once again because the given posting period belongs to future year? So please do re-chk and give correct period according to your current fiscal year.
    You can get your fiscal year details and assignment of fiscal year variant to the co,code details in OB29 and OB37 t codes respectfully.

    Are there any proof?The proof is in the pudding, so to speak. The best thing to do is to benchmark your application on single and multi-processor machines.
    It should be noted that there are reports of threading problems with Java on multi-processor machines. I haven't seen the problems myself, nor do I remember the exact problems people were seeing (and on what OS/Hardware) but if you search these forums you should be able to find out the details.

    while the AWT event-dispatch thread is running I would like to set a new value for a Text field and have the value of that field, as seen by the user, refresh to show the new value. I could use this technique, if it's possible, to make one of the fields in my window into a status field.
    I know that this can be done by doing the processing in a thread other than the AWT thread, but I was hoping there is some way to get a field to redisplay its contents to the user while the AWT thread is running.

    What did just happen? How come the Oracle Database category list page shows almost every forum with a Last post updated around "Nov 22, 2012 8:01 AM"?
    Same thing with the first forums on the Fusion Middleware category page as well.
    Noticed the same thing in the top Java category (but with dates around "Nov 21, 2012 9:19 AM").
    Related to upgrade preparations perhaps?

    Well your problem is that you are not actually starting your pdf threads, you are simply calling the run method of the object. You need to call start() in the mft object. The start method causes the underlying system thread to be started then the execution of the run method is carried out within that thread.
    You should check why calling mft.start() does not result in the run method being called.
    1- Threads never run in parallel on a single CPU machine, they share time on the CPU. No CPU can run more than one process simultaneously even if the OS makes it look that way.
    2- The process you are carrying out is not going to be performant enough using multi-threading, you are simply going to clog your machine with Threads which do a lot of I/O which will cause them to spend most of their time in the blocked state (this means that they automatically yield to other threads. It is actually more performant to use a single thread to do this job.
