Throwable

Hi All,
I'm basically new to Java & wanted know why do we need Exception class when already there is throwble. Exception has 4 constructor only & same is present in throwable as well. what is the need of exception class?
Thanks,
Karthik

>
You are correct but we can achieve the same by simply extending throwable class in our custom exception class. Something like:
MyException extends Throwable{ }
what is the use in doing MyException extends Exception?
>
Perhaps if you read Chapter 11 'Exceptions' in the Java Specification it will make it more clear to you
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/specs/jls/se7/jls7.pdf
>
11.1.1 The Kinds of Exceptions
An exception is represented by an instance of the class Throwable (a direct subclass of Object) or one of its subclasses.
Throwable and all its subclasses are, collectively, the exception classes.
Note that a subclass of Throwable must not be generic (§8.1.2).
The classes Exception and Error are direct subclasses of Throwable.
Exception is the superclass of all the exceptions from which ordinary programs
may wish to recover.
Error is the superclass of all the exceptions from which ordinary programs are not
ordinarily expected to recover.
Error and all its subclasses are, collectively, the error classes.
The class Error is a separate subclass of Throwable, distinct from Exception in the class
hierarchy, to allow programs to use the idiom "} catch (Exception e) {" (§11.2.3)
to catch all exceptions from which recovery may be possible without catching errors from
which recovery is typically not possible.
The class RuntimeException is a direct subclass of Exception.
RuntimeException is the superclass of all the exceptions which may be thrown
for many reasons during expression evaluation, but from which recovery may still
be possible.
>
Note the next to last paragraph that starts with 'The class Error is a separate subclass of Throwable . . .'.
That paragraph tells you EXACTLY why there is both an Error class and an Exception class.
And, because both Error and Exception have a lot in common that commonality is expressed in
the superclass Throwable.
As that paragraph says programs will use "} catch (Exception e) {" to catch and handle problems
that you may be able to recover from.
If you need to better identify and deal with your own problems you would extend the Exception
class since your own problems will be exceptions, not 'Errors'.
Sure, you could write your own classes to extend from Throwable but everything you did would be
non-standard and would serve no purpose at all other than just 'being different'.

    Can anybody tell me what conditions would cause this error?

    well yes:
    panel.addGLEventListener(new GLR());
    "GLR" implements "GLEventListener" and defines the required methods
    I installed the Netbeans OpenGL Pack on NetBeans 6.5 and there is a problem with that...mh :(
    Ok I also tried to create a GLPanel-Sample-Project and modify it but netbeans don't know "javax.swing.GroupLayout;" I installed the JDK as well.
    mh what can i do: try to fix my actual error or try to get GroupLayout in java.swing^^

    Copy the clientSDKOptions.xml file over to Linux, make it accessible to your Java process, then specify the directory path where the file is found (not file path) using the Java System property "ras.config".
    Then strace the Java process, to ensure your app is accessing the xml file correctly in the expected location.

  • Catching all Throwables

    Hi all,
    What is the best way to catch all Throwables, e.g. Errors and Exceptions? I want to catch all Throwables appearing in my app in all Threads even in the EventQueues etc.
    Thx for any hint, Mathias

    What about catching every output to System.err? I
    think every stacktrace is going to System.err. But how
    do I know when an output is finished, e.g. when to
    popup my dialog? As someone has pointed out this is a very bad idea. A dialog presumes that the GUI is working. What if the gui is throwing the exception? What if your exception dialog is throwing the exception....
    exception thrown, dialog starts and throws exception,
    dialog starts and throws exception,
    dialog starts and throws exception,
    And I am not repeating myself above. That is what your code is going to do.
    I always catch throwable. I put it in main, I do a printStackTrace and then I exit the app. I am hopeful that it will print the stack trace. And even if it doesn't then the app will still end.

  • Try to understand Throwable

    I saw some sample codes like:
    [Base Exception Class]
    public class BaseException extends Exception {
    public BaseException() {super();}
    public BaseException(Throwable exception) {
    super();
    this.nestedException = exception;
    }//end constructor
    [Sub Exception]
    public class TestException extends BaseException {
    public TestException(Throwable exception) {
    super(exception);
    public TestException() {
    super();
    [Calling Class]
    public Result getData() throws TestException {
    try {
    connection = ConnectionHelper.getConnection(...);
    } catch (SQLException e){
    TestException te = new TestException(e);
    te.setErrorCode("10000");
    throw te;
    --What is the purpose of passing the e as Throwable in
    new TestException(e);
    It seems to me that if use:
    TestException te = new TestException();
    will also create the object. And
    te.setErrorCode("10000");
    throw te;
    will be just fine. Then why should use the Throwable e to initiate the Object
    TestException? Or what is the usage of use the Throwable?
    Thanks
    Scott

    Throwable is the superclass of Exception (or somewhere up there).
    The purpose is that you catch an exception in your code, but want to throw a new one, but want to include the original one that started it all.
    Generally, I don't normally do that, but it does happen in some places. I've seen this in JSP all the time (what Tomcat does, not what I've done in JSP).

  • Can we extend the Throwable class instead of Exception Class??

    Hi all..
    Can we extend the Throwable class instead of Exception Class while creating our own custom Exception?If not Why?
    Please give your valuble advices..
    Ramesh.

    I don't want to hijack the thread here, but in a conversational tone...on a related note.. I've thought about this too a bit and wondered if there are some recommended practices about catching and handling Throwable in certain applications. Like the other day I was debugging a web application that was triggering a 500. The only way I could find the problem in an error stack was to write code to catch Throwable, log the stack, and then re-throw it. I considered it "debug" code, and once I solved the problem I took the code out because, my understanding is, we don't want to be handling runtime problems... or do we? Should I have a catch clause for Throwable in my servlet and then pass the message to ServletException?
    So along with the OP question, are there separate defined occasions when we should or should not handle Throwable? Or does it just all depend on circumstance?

  • Throws Throwable

    Hi,
    I have come across the classes where for handling the exceptions, they have used as
    'throws Throwable'.
    It gives me confusion since from my understanding we need to throw only the exception and not this Throwable class itself.
    Could anyone help me understanding the idea behind this.
    Thanks in adv.
    -Bh.

    Throwable is the superclass of Exception & Error.
    have a look :
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/secondedition/html/exceptions.doc.html#44278_
    in general you can throw any subclass of Throwable or Throwable itself.
    have a look for Throw statement:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jls/secondedition/html/statements.doc.html#79311_
    Hope this will clear your doubt.
    Thanx

  • No "Throwable" when  maximum path length of  NSS-Drive is exceeded!

    Hi,
    I have the problem that when I access a NSS-Drive (Novell Storage Services) via Windows (Java is running under Windows XP) that an exceeding path (bigger the 255 chars) produces no Throwable (Error or Exception whether checked or unchecked).
    At my system the "Novell Client Version 4.91 SP 1" is running.
    Even
    try {
                   System.out.println(new File(name).createNewFile());
                  catch (IOException ioe) {
                   ioe.printStackTrace();
                  }returns true, but nothing happens on the file system.
    Also new FileOutputStream(
                       name) doesn't complains.
    On local ntfs-drives this limit doesn't applies.
    At the moment I check if the path exceeds 255 chars and pop up a Warning about that, but that's just a ugly workaround.
    Any suggestions to avoid this?
    Is this a known bug?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Greetings Michael

    If a file isn't created (with a truncated name) and there isn't any I/O exception then this is likely to be bug in the Novell Client or in Windows. The createNewFile simply calls the Win32 CreateFile function to create the file and if it fails then an I/O exception is thrown. Can you test with a simple C program to see if you observe the same issue?

    This became bug 6560301. And Sun pointed out that it was my bad in not handling spurious wakeups. Java 6 makes spurious wakeups more likely. (My experience is from "never" to "sometimes".)
