Thumbnail images in Forms6 client/server

Hello,
Some help would be greatly appreciated on this matter. I would like to be able to display a thumbnail image of a picture on the web in an oracle, NON-WEB enabled form.
For example, when I open a form dealing with product details, I would like a piece of magic to retrieve a thumbnail image of the product from somewhere on the web, and display it on the form. Please note, in my situation it is not viable to store a scaled down version of the image int he database. The image must be located somewhere on the web.
Some research into this has pointed me to OLE, but I can't seem to find anythng relating OLE to images in forms.
Any ideas?

Denis,
I followed the instructions in the link you gave (how to put animated icons in forms in which you instructed how to use an activeX control to display images in client/server forms.
I would like to thank you as it works beutifully, however there is one more question - Is there a way to get to image to scale or 'fit' to the size of the activeX control on the form

  • Client\server Forms

Oracle Forms6i in a client\server environment is a great product that still works very well for us. We do not need (or want) a web-based solution. Our system only needs to support our in-house users (about 400 currently).
I am very disappointed in the direction that Oracle is forcing us to go (web-based) if we want to stay with the Oracle tools that we know well. This isn't so much a request for help, it's more an attempt to communicate to the Oracle Forms manager(s) that going away from client\server is very disappointing to us and looks to be a bad business decision.

    Mark,
I must appologize, but I though that things are easier to search and find on this forum. I tried for half an hour but wasn't able to spot the main thread ;-(
The summary of it is that there was a big discussion on this forum after Oracle announced its desupport date for Forms and Reports client/server (sometime in July if I remember well). Along with this desupport date there was a discussion whether or not Oracle Forms supports XP. The initial decision of not supporting XP was reverted and XP now is supported since patch 13.
For client/server the desupport date is January 1st 2005 for error correction and January 1st 2008 for extended assistance support. Thus Forms6i client/server will be around until end of 2007.
Most discussions on this forum were about the cost going with moving Forms to the Web, especially keeping in mind that client/server runtime was for free.
Another issue was the size of the Oracle9iAS installation which is 6GB all in all though Forms users may not use all the Oracle Application Server components.
Last but not least, many customers didn't feel ready to move their applications to the Web in this period of time, especially those that run character mode applications.
The installation issue gets fixed with the upcoming Oracle Application Server 10g which has a installation option that only installs the software required to run Forms and Reports.
The migration is assisted by a Forms Migration Assistant in Forms9i as well as material that we compiled and published on OTN. The WebUtil library finally was developed to close the gap between client/server functionality and teh Web functionality.
I can't talk about pricing, because this is not in the scope of my professional work, but OTN offered a special upgrade promotion for Forms users when moving their applications to teh Web.
Client/server as it is in Forms6i will not come back, this is how it seems.
There have been discussions on this forum if one could simulate client/server using the Forms Web components installed on a local client. Webstart was mentioned as one possible solution as it would allow you to have Forms applications started and run from an icon on the user desktop. Currently there are some investigations in Forms development going into this direction.
The majority of customers that posted their opinion on the client/server desupport did not like the client/server desupport plan at all.
The OTN forum postings where brought to Oracle senior management attention by Forms Product Managers monitoring this list.
The benefit of a Web only version of Forms - and you may disagree - is integration with the J2EE stack Oracle has within Oracle9iAS and OracleAS 10g.
J2EE is a technology that more and more customers evaluate for future development efforts. Having Forms integrating with J2EE applications(as seamlessly as possible)is the best way to make sure that Forms users can leverage their investment in the Forms technology. Even more, you can extend Forms applications with J2EE or have it communicating with it (the same applies to Reports)
Many new features that we implemented in Forms6i and Forms9i worked on the Web only (SSO, Enterprise Manager monitoring, client side Java etc).
Mark, hope that this summary gives you a good idea of what the discussions were about and that we do care of what customers do with Forms.
Just in case that I missed an argument or presented it too positive (my memory is subjective and not perfect), I am sure that the forum members which already contributed to this posting will add additional comments. Others may join in too.

  • Java Advanced Imaging - Imaging Client Server application

    Hello,
I try to send images compressed from a server to a client, the first Image is received by the client, but nothing append after.
The client send an error that says that the socket connection is closed and I don't know wky !
I am using "JAI" for the image compression on the server and I use the method ImageCodec.createImageEncoder(OutputStream dst, ImageEncodeParam param)
OutputStream is the data stream between the client and the server, I have used DataOutputStream and OutputStream object but I got the same error.
(In an example of JAI they use FileOutputStream, I just change it for OuputStream in order to send data on the socket).
    ImageEncodeParam is null.
I use an other socket that permits to launch commands through text command. So text commands and data are on 2 differents sockets.
Every time the client ask to the server for an image and the client wait for the stream data.
I know that it could be easer using RMI but it will be better for me to use a stream.
Could you tell me what way should I take, Could you show me an example?
    Thank you in advance,
    Regards.

This has nothing to do with imaging.
You are sending something via a socket and that is the problem.
    The most likely problems:
    1. You are sending/reading text not binary.
    2. You are sending data not a message (a message contains data) and thus have no way to determine when the actual message has arrived.
    3. You are just doing something wrong with your socket code.

  • Can i fetch images from my remote server to UIImageView or a preview thumbnail in ios app?

consider i have 1000 images in my hosting, i want all those images in my ios app. It is like ,in one screen around 9 thumbnails of image must be loaded from the webserver .And when i swipe the screen to the right another set of 9 thumbnail images must be loaded , it goes on untill all the image from the server are loaded. and when i click on a thumbnail the image must be shown in full screen. When i add more image to the hosting,  the swiping of  pages and thumnail previews must also dynamically increase. is there any way to achieve this concept ??

    khankmk wrote:
if yes, then can u tell me how to achieve it?
Again, to give you the answer you have requested - yes, I can.
This is roughtly equivalent to asking a doctor how to remove an appendix. It isn't the most difficult surgery in the world, but it does require some training. It is not something I am able to explain. I could tell you to setup a web server with REST interface to serve images, metadata, and structure. Then write your app to populate some browser tables based on that data. Somehow, I don't think that explanation is going to provide much help.

  • Help-Is 9ias a necessity even for client server deployment of forms6i

    Hi
Is 9Ias a necessity even for client server deployment of forms6i using developerSuite. I have been told that Oracle no longer markets Forms Server?
    Ganesh.

No for client server deployment you don't need iAS.
On the second issue Forms server (the bit of forms used to web deploy) is no longer sold stand-alone - it is part of the iAS suite.

  • Client server Imaging

    Hello,
I need to make Client-Server Imaging, with JAI, I have two solutions. The first is to use RMI, the second IIP (there are two JAI operations which support IIP).
I would like to ask, what are the main difference between those two ways or tell me how to make a IIP-server ... if someone can help me ...
    thanks.

The key to your problem is to truly start thinking in Java.
Hi, I'm doing the same work!
i'm trying to do a viewer in java that support the iip
    server.
    if you can help me...

  • Thumbnail image server behaviour

    Hello,
Best new years wishes to all!
Can anyone explain just how the thumbnail behavior works? Is it just a latent resizing process initialized on first load of a page?
Is it a process of checking for an existent thumbnail image and then resizing only if the thumbnail is not present?
Why not resize the image on upload to full size and also thumbnail size?
I use the behavior and it works well, just not sure how it works and would like to know.
    Regards,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
the Show Thumbnail behaviour does indeed create the thumbnails on page load and not earlier, so it seems that...
Is it a process of checking for an existent thumbnail image and then resizing only if the thumbnail is not present?
    ...this is true.
Why not resize the image on upload to full size and also thumbnail size?
IMO this would be adding some more "what if the server doesn´t execute additional processes ?" insecurities, because - well - some users might already encounter the main image not being uploaded correctly for whatever reason, and any additional process like creating the subdirectory "thumbnails" plus creating a thumbnail in there will of course fail when step a) already went wrong.
As one never really knows why on earth e.g. resizing a very large image may go wrong (due to some "memory" related limits obviously), it wouldn´t be wise to make an application even stack some extra tasks on top of that -- rolling out the thumbnail creation process to a different page seems smarter, because just in case thumbnail X isn´t created the first time, it will be created the next time someone launches the page in question.

  • Client Server Application with images or icons

I made a Client Server application with JFrames, but I put a jLabel with an icon, and I can't run the Client.
    It says java.lang.NullPointerException
Do you know why I can't see the icon in the JLabel? It isn't an applet, it's an application with JFrames.

You have to explain the problem better if you want some help. Also show the code which is giving you the nullpointerexception(Do not forget codetags!).

  • Thumbnail Images in ECC6.0 in DMS

    Hi DMS Experts
In ECC6.0 There is functionality in DMS in Transaction Code CV04N
    to display thumbnail images .
I have done setting in Workstation apllication and Set Up Workstation Application for Thumbnails (Images).Still I am not able to display images in thumbnails
Apart from this are there any setting to be done.
this functionality works in IDEAS server, but not in Sandbox which I made setting.
Does this work for Easy DMS only.
    Pls guide me
    With warm regards

    Hi Pande,
generally please note that the thumbnail display supports graphics in JPG, GIF or BMP only.
To enable the proper thumbnail display you have to maintain also a thumbnail sequence in the customizing under Set Up Workstation Application for Thumbnails (Images). Here you can determine what type of thumbnail is displayed first for the specific document type. If you want to enable thumbnail view for other
graphic formats you have to implement a specific converter which can be done by BADI implementation. You will find further information in transaction SPRO under
    - Cross-Application Components
    - Document Management
    - General Data
    - Business Add-Ins (BAdIs)
--> BAdI: Enhancements for Thumbnails (Images)
I hope this information will help you to enable thumbnail display.
    Best regards,

  • Client/server vs. Application Server

Our company has around 30 sites with each one having its own Oracle database server and file server (repository for executables of Forms6i/Reports6i). All the sites have the same applications running, i.e., the same set of programs are replicated to each site. At present we are running the applications in client/server mode (Forms6i/Reports6i runtime is installed on each client machine).
We are also using some third party modules developed in VB/VC++.
Now we are looking for the Centralized Solution, i.e., We want to have a Single Database Server available to all the sites all the sites are already linked with Network Leased lines).
Now we want to know the impact of running centralized file server (located at Corporate Office site) accessible from all the sites (through same client/server mode).
Will this solution work for us or we should move to 3-tier mode? Please suggest us the best feasible solution which can be implemented as early as possible.
What I mean to ask in the question above is: if a good intranet connectivity is available among sites, what would be the better approach, client/server or n-tier?
What actually would we gain by using application server in this context? Does the Data travelling is reduced from Database Server through to the Client Node in 3-tier AS approach? Does this 3-tier approach will reduce the Burden on Leased Lines? Does we gain more network resources available in 3-tier?
What I think is that in client/server mode, the data is travelled from Database Server to Client Machine, but using Application Server, the Data from Database Server will travel upto Application Server and NOT to the Cleint machine (on browser etc.), hence reducing Network Load.
Please clarify as your input makes a valuable role in our decision-making.

    Hello,
I'll take a stab at this one...
If you have enough network bandwidth, you should be fine funning in client/server mode. I have worked with clients with this same configuration. In addition to having a centralized DB, we have also centralized the forms on a network drive allowing users to access the same files and removing the need for users having to update their files locally. The biggest problem I see with this configuration, as long as you have enough band width, is that your configuration is not supported as 6i has been desupported.
From my perspective you really don't have any choice but to upgrade your application so that you can be supported. The good news is that for the clients we have worked with upgrades have gone very smoothly. In fact recently we have started to partner with another vendor that has a tool specifically designed to upgrade Oracle Forms and it includes additional features above and beyond what you get from Oracle. This tool has drastically reduced the amount of time to complete upgrades (like going from a 2 year project to just a few weeks).
I hate to answer this question because it is hard to answer without really getting into the details with you. The good news is once you do have a centralized DB and centralized application maintenance will be significantly easier.
One last option you might consider that our company has done is to use Citrix. I've never used it for Oracle Forms, but for other client/server applications it has allowed out clients to web enabled their existing applications without changing them at all and also get a boost in performance. I wouldn't recommend this approach to you because what you have should be short term until you get your forms/reports upgraded.
If you have any specific questions I can try and answer them for you. Good luck and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

  • Timeline thumbnail images

Okay, so I am a little embarrassed to post this, but I have been a FCP user for about 6 years and have always wondered if this is possible.
When I lose a link to a movie file in any project, if the file is in use on the timeline, the timeline thumbnail displays the red and black "MEDIA OFFLINE" image. For some reason, when I reconnect the file, the thumbnail continues to display the offline warning. Is there a way to refresh that little image? I have tried saving the project after reconnecting the file and restarting, but it always comes back up with the OFFLINE warning still there.
Of course, I can live without having refreshed thumbnail images, but sometimes it gives clients a little scare. Just curious how, if at all, this might be possible.

I've always found giving the client a little scare is a good thing. Keeps 'em humble

  • NetBoot Images Not Recognized by Server

I can use SIU to create NetBoot images from my install package just fine.   They end up in the Library/NetBoot/NetbootSP0 directory.   But the Server NetInstall images pane tells me that "No images available" regardless of where I place them.  The client sharepoints are available in the File Share service. I've followed the instructions from multiple sources (the all say essentially the same thing) to no avail.
Now I'm just stuck.  This should be working, but I can't figure out what I'm missing.

I'm not sure if I am answering the correct question or not...
And my experience was on 10.6.8 server, with NetRestore rather than NetBoot.  Nevertheless I'll mention what I found in case it is helpful as they are very nearly the same process.
I had awful problems in the past getting the whole process to work, it seems that it matters which machine you use to do the imaging.  What I found worked was to:
    - clone the disc you want to image onto a USB disc.  I can't remember what I used to do this, would have been either ditto or SuperDuper!  (I found in the past that CarbonCopy Cloner worked less well)
    - plug the USB disc into the server and run Disk Image Utility on the server
For me this was the "Eureka" moment that made the whole thing suddenly work.
Also I should mention that I found that it matters which network switch you use.  A TPLink switch didn't pass something that was needed for the NetRestore process to work, whereas an HP Procurve switch worked fine.

  • How to minimize Client-Server Round-trip in ADF Faces application ?

    Hi All,
We have just finished POC on our prototype of ADF Faces + ADF BC application. The POC Emphasizes on Bandwidth requirement.
After receing the result from the communication provider, including : TCP packets send, Bytes sent from/to server and number of Client-Server Round-Trip.
There are several part of the application that Must be tuned for the application to run on acceptable performance.
Here is some page/ function that should be tuned :
    - First page, ADF Read Only Table with two images and some buttons, cause 5 round-trip
    - ADF Dialog Returning Value (as LOV), cause 4 Round-trips
    - On ADF Form, press Commit button, cause 3 Round-trips.
    So the question is :
    1) How to reduce round-trips on ADF Faces application ?
    2) How to minimize the bytes send from / To server on a specific user action ?
    Please give me some recommendation..
    Thank you very much,
    xtanto

    Hi Frank and Steve,
    Thank you for your reply.
Yes Frank, what I mean by Round-Trip is the traffic between Client and the Server. And Yes, we will use VSAT where the latency is 1 - 1.5 second, so that round-trip matters significantly.
What I will do is :
    - use minimal skin and No image at all
    - don't use Dialog for LOV because it requires AutoSubmit there.
    - Use 'Apply-Changes' button to do server-side validation before Commit.
Then do the POC / testing again.
    Thank you,
    xtanto

  • Client/server application under development

    Hi there,
I've been working on a client/server application that includes chat and whiteboard features. In terms of how the client app communicates with the server app, my initial thought was to just go with xml, until I reached a snag. Everything about chat and almost everything that is accomplished on the whiteboard can be expressed in terms of text or character data; which what makes xml a good candidate for moving the data back and forth from client to server. However, there's one part of the whiteboard feature that can't be converted to just text. The whiteboard has an ImageTool. With it you can select an image (gif, jpg) from your harddrive and load it into the whiteboard. An image is binary data and simply cannot be put into an xml file for transport. At least, that's my understanding. Am I wrong about this?
So, this poses the questions: "How do other similar applications like MSN Messenger move images around? If they're not using xml as there medium, what are they using? Just plain sockets without any structured medium like xml?"
    Please advise,
    Alan

You could always Base64 encode the image file content and then put the Base64 in XML.
I am in the middle of a client-server project and I use XStream ( http://xstream.codehaus.org/ ) to convert Objects to XML automatically. I don't have to do any explicit encoding - XStream does it all for me.
