ThumbnailServer process seems to runaway on my PowerBook running 10.4.11

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.11 on a PowerBook G4 with and I noticed that if I assemble a slide show and then click on the slideshow in iDVD'08 that iDVD shows a list of the slides (with blank thumbnails) and says "generating thumbnails...", but it never returns and the Activity Monitor shows the ThumbnailServer process using all sorts of CPU. The thumbnail generating seems to never end and no thumbnails are shown in the iDVD thumbnail window.

Did you already drag and drop the plist for iDvd to the trash and Restart the computer (yes/no)?
com.apple.iDvd.plist
Use your Finder to copy and paste the bold item above and drag the item/s to the trash. A full Restart is recommended.
If that fails then read this if you haven't already:

Good luck.

  • Mac. MobileMe-to-iCloud. Upgrading Mail Database process seems to be hung - has been running for over 1 hour - progress bar stuck at about 20%.

Am wondering whether to 'Force Quit' and restart, or to let it keep running. Noticed that Activity Monitor is reporting very use of CPU (98% to 100%) of an activity named as "AddressBookSourceSync". Am not sure if that's related to this issue. Any suggestions? Thanks....

did you ever resolve this?  I have the same problem.  Now it is March 2012, your question was in October of 2011.

I have an Ipod touch and recently added new music to my Itunes library. When I sync with the library, the new music does not show up on my ipod. The sync process seems to be working and there is still plenty of space on the Ipod for new music so I'm not sure what the problem is!

What happens when you try to sync?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
Do the songs play in iTunes?
Do you have the right boxes checked to sync?

    Hello nicky:
You should run repair disk from your software install DVD before you try anything else. The crash may have damaged some of your directories - and a possible cause of the "missing/not missing" tunes.

  • The deployment process seems to die or get stuck, iAS 6 SP3 for Solaris 8?

When I deploy my application in iAS 6 SP3 for Solaris 8 the deployment process seems to die or get stuck. In the shell window i get the messages
iasdeploy for iPlanet Application Server 6.0 SP3

When starting the deployment I get in the beginning of kas.log two entries
    ADMIN-168: kas> deployment get log ''J2EEInstallEar''

but suddenly the second line disappears and the only message I get is the first entry. I need to break the deployment process and kill the processes manually.

I think all processes starts OK, I get one for .kas and one for kas, one for .kxs and one for kxs and finally one for .kjs and one for kjs.
Is someone familiar with this/these problem(s)?

It seems you are deploying a very big application. Try to deploy this application with following command
    j2eeappreg <filename>
It should work fine. It was a bug with iasdeploy command in iAS SP3 which had been fixed in iAS SP4.

  • Time dep master data reorganization / process seems to do nothing

    Hi,
    Info:
I created a process chain just to reorganize time dep master data for 1 InfoObject (0UCINSTALLA). In this process variant I choose only to process time dep attributes - not text or time independent tables.
The InfoObject is flagged for change run (have som entries in M version)
    The InfoObject with the properties:
    /BI0/QUCINSTALLA = 9 393 539 rec (4 162 in M version) (same goes for Y-table). Those tables have just a few (3-4) fields.
The InfoObject 0UCINSTALLA exists in a few aggregates, but none of the time dep attributes does.
    The system have these components:
    SAP_ABA     700     0013
    SAP_BASIS     700     0013
    PI_BASIS     2005_1_700     0013
    ST-PI     2005_1_700     0005
    SAP_BW     700     0015
    BI_CONT     703     0005
Running on Linux / Oracle 10.2.0.2.0
    Problem:
The background job is started via process chain but checking the
process it seems to do nothing. I ran it for 3 days over the weekend, it doesn't time out or give any ABAP dumps or entries in SM21.
Checking the statement for the process in ST04 gives me:
    SELECT
    FROM
      "/BI0/QUCINSTALLA" T_00
    WHERE
      EXISTS ( SELECT T_100 . "UCINSTALLA" FROM "/BI0/QUCINSTALLA" T_100

Anybody have any idea what the problem could be - I have no idea how long a reorganization for the amount of records should take. But the process seems to do nothing.
    Thanks,

    A little update:
I could see that the background process (which seemed to do nothing) ran a oracle process and on the DB server instance this was no.1 in top cpu. So - something is happening. The DB only has 2 cpus. Is there any way to run this job with more then 1 process?

  • MacPro is overheating, installing Lion. BN indexer process seems to be cosuming around 100% CPU. What can I do?

MacPro overheating after installing Lion. BN indexer and-or helpd processes seem to be taking around 100% CPU. Suspending those processes seem to solve the problem, but does not seem to be an adequate solution.

Helpd updates all of the Application help files on your Mac.
However, I hate having helpd launching repeatedly and seemingly randomly, taking up 1 gig of RAM, and using so much CPU time that the fans go loudly full blast on my MacBook Pro.  I prefer having my MacBook Pro be quiet.
Upon investigation, I found that helpd is controlled by a System LaunchAgent plist which is run on startup:
    /System/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpd.plist
When examining the contents of this plist using XCode, what you find is that:
    1. helpd is run when it is loaded by the system at startup or login
    2. helpd is run on every Sunday at 2:30 AM
    3. the launch agent watches the following folders and runs helpd whenever the folders change:
        /Applications/
        /Applications/Utilities/
The biggest problem is the watch folders.  They change whenever you open them (i.e. their modified date changes when opened).  They change when you install a new application. Many applications change their Application folder content when run. etc. etc.
The easiest solution is to use Xcode, Lingon2 in expert mode (not Lingon3) or another plist editor to modify the com.apple.helpd.plist to change the watch folders.
I changed /Applications/ to /Applications/Utilities/  and left the second watch folder /Applications/Utilities/
Since I seldom open /Applications/Utilities/ this causes helpd to launch far less often.
You can also just simpliy eliminate the watch folders.  This keeps helpd running on Sundays at 2:30 AM or on startup or login.
When users get rid of many older applications, they see helpd launch less often since these older applications may be the ones modifying the /Applications/ folder.
If you have only newer applications or few applications, you don't run into the helpd problem as often or at all. This is why few people complain about helpd. Only the users who have numerous applications (particularly older ones or ones not bought from the App Store) run into this problem.

Tried updating my iPad wirelessly today. Process seemed to have gotten stuck and later wi fi crashed (in that order, I believe). Restarted iPad and got a picture of a wire leading to iTunes icon on the iPad screen. Nothing happens even when connected it to my Windows 8.1 PC, and iTunes doesn't seem to recognize the iPad.

    Hello there, uromr.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great troubleshooting steps for the issue you're having:

  • TS1702 I can't update or use currents applications. The updating process seems to be stopped...

The updating process seems be stopped, and I cant use many applications because they need to be updated but the process is never complited.

Try this first and see if the update process will start again.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If that doesn't work, here are other things to try.
    1. Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem
    2. If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
    3. You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
    4. You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.

I am in the midst of setting up my new iPad Air, and the process seems to be stuck on "Updating iCloud settings..."  What is a reasonable time for this step to take?

Shouldn't take more than a few seconds to a minute.  If it's stuck, you might want to give Apple support a call to see if they are experiencing unreported server issues.  Since your device is new, you are within the 90-day free call support period.  You can set up the call here: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.  You will need your serial number, which is on the box and (I believe) the back of your iPad.

  • PowerBook Running HOT After Leopard Install

Ever since I installed Leopard, my powerbook runs so hot that swear it's going to melt! Even with just one program open for a short time (like Apple Mail) the fan will be running and the unit seems like it is being overworked or something. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is Leopard so advanced that a powerbook just a few years old has a hard time running it? Any suggestions?

Thanks for your willingness to help me out.
I think the layout of Activity Monitor may be a little different in Leopard...what I am looking at under the CPU button says that the user has 100% usage on the CPU and the bar chart is totally filled in green. What the CPU column says under "all processes" is that some program called lexmarkcupsdrive (I have no idea what it is) is hogging most of my juice–if the 93.1 is the % usage. I pasted all the info on that below:
    "85 LexmarkCUPSDrive _lp 93.1 3 4.05 MB 736.61 MB PowerPC"
This is seems weird because the user is"_lp". I have no idea what that is either. For the most part, all the other process users look legit like "root" and the name of my home folder .
Do you make anything of this?
My powerbook never used to heat up or even seem like it was working unless I was watching a dvd or using iTunes with tons of other programs open–the issue really irritates me.
If I see processes in my activity monitor that I don't recognize, or that look suspicious should I take action?
    Thanks for your help Bob,
    MacUte

  • Why does my 12" Powerbook run 18˚C hotter than my 15" iBook?

Both computers have 1.33ghz G4 processors in them, and 1.25gb of ram. Both have OS 10.4.8.
The iBook runs at 44˚ C according to Temperature Monitor.
The PowerBook runs at 62˚C if not higher.
I recently had the PowerBook's internal power input replaced as it wasn't working. Perhaps this is the case?
    12" powerbook g4 1.33   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25ghz ram

Assuming you're measuring the processor temps, 62º C / 144º F is on the high side of where the Powerbook should be running, and is about where the Powerbook fans should be turning on. Given normal room temperatures, you should see lower temps, more in line with below 48º-54º C (120º-130º if my conversion is correct), depending on what's running.
If you haven't already, you might want to run your Apple hardware test to ensure your fans are working. Insert the first OS X CD that came with your system (should say 'AHT Vx.x' in small print), and reboot holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, follow directions, and choose the extended test. You should hear when it turns the fans on.
When your PB is showing 62º C, have you opened activity monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) to see if anything is using 100% of your CPU? Do you have any print jobs that haven't completed, which can cause the system to use 100% of CPU while looping when trying to reprint?
If nothing shows up here, have you tried a safe boot (reboot holding the shift key down) to see if you still run at the same temps? A safe boot does some background disk maintenance and doesn't load any startup items. If everything seems OK, reboot normally. If the problem returns, you may have an issue with a startup item, which you can view in your accounts systems preference pane, under login items.
Your Powerbook does use the case bottom as a heat sink for the processor, so the bottom may feel very warm (which is why Apple says to use it on a flat surface, and not a blanket for example, to ensure proper cooling).

  • Can't seem to sync my iphone 4 running ios 7 with itunes 10.6 running on a mac running osx 10.5.8 What can I do to fix this?

can't seem to sync my iphone 4 running ios 7 with itunes 10.6 running on a mac running osx 10.5.8 What can I do to fix this? Is there an itunes update? or How can I return to the previous ios?

To sync an iOS 7 device you need to be running iTunes 11.1.1; iTunes 10.6 is way too old and won't work. You need to install iTunes 11.1.1, but to do that you need to be running at least Mac OS X 10.6.8.
So you need to do the following:
    1. Upgrade your Mac to at least OS X 10.6.8 (later preferably, but 10.6.8 at the miniumum).
        a. Check first to see if your model Mac can be upgraded, check that it has enough RAM and so forth (2GB at the least, more if possible).
        b. If you can't upgrade your Mac, or don't want to, then you will have to buy a new Mac with the latest version of OS X (currently 10.8.5, soon to become 10.9) and iTunes 11.1.1
    2. Install iTunes 11.1.1 on your newly upgraded Mac.
    3. Sync your iOS 7 iPhone with iTunes.
