Thunar crashes with samba mount

Thunar (and some other stuff probably) seems to crash sometimes when I play an mp3 with VLC from a samba share which has been auto mounted from thunar by browsing 'network'.
dmesg:
[ 659.966753] Thunar[338]: segfault at 18 ip 00000000004548a9 sp 00007fffe604c0f0 error 4 in thunar[400000+98000]
After the crash I am unable to mount the samba share again from within thunar.

Also, I see two instances of the same windows share sometimes in the 'browse network' panel of thunar, but this is probably unrelated

Just to close this out: the answer was it wasn't the Xserve at all. It turns out the Windows clients were running an anti-virus program that was scanning the network drives on login. So, when they all logged in simultaneously they hit the Xserve with 50 scans and it was so busy dealing with the load that it couldn't process the logins for the others.
Unfortunately we didn't find this out until the Teacher was completely feed up with the Apple unit and removed it from the school (to put it politely). When the new (Linux based) unit exhibited the same slowdown, we figured it must be with the Windows clients. After we turned off the anti-virus network drive scan, everything got much better.
So, while this does have a happy ending (the network works) it did involve an Apple casualty. I tried my best, but maybe this post will help someone else that find themselves in the same predicament.

  • Samba slows down/crashes with more than 50 users

    We have a XServe Dual G5 with 2GB RAM running only Open Directory & SMB for a network of 150 Windows XP Pro workstations. Everything works fine if we have < 30 users logon at once, but if 40-50 users try the server just goes belly up.
    We've upgraded to 10.5.2 but that didn't seem to help at all. The CPUs never go above 70% utilization, the network traffic is very low, and it always has about a GB of memory left. Does anyone else have any clues? I've included the top part one of the CrashReporter logs for samba.

  • Macbook pro early 2011 - overheat and crash with blue screen and glitches

    Hi
    since last wednesday my MBP has started to freeze and then crash with bluescreen, glitches and so on...
    Most of the time doesnt not restart with any command as is overheating as well.
    I did a clean installation on friday night and i am now running mavericks and then again on sunday it start with all the above issue. At the moment i am able to restart only if i reset NVRAM each time, which i do not think is really safe to do it everytime.
    i also tried
    Macs Fan Control
    gfxCardStatus
    to fix but they doesn't help.
    I read many customers are now experiencing similar problems with this mac as the GPU Amd is faulty.
    APPLE SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE IT or will lose many custumers
    I am now waiting to be seen at Genius bar on sunday, however i read about etrecheck in this related post
    http:/https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5081857?start=0&tstart=0
    and meanwhile i want to hear your opinion...
    Looking forward

  • When connected via USB, my Ipod Classic 160GB mounts as a disc drive, then changes to a white drive.  When iTunes automatically opens, it crashes trying to mount and/ or sync.  When it times out, my only choice is to restore, but that doesn't fix problem.

    I'm running OS 10.6.8 on my 3.06 GHz iMac Intel Core 2 Duo.   I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.5.2.  I'm not sure when the trouble started but I attempted a restore when the iPod would not play correctly.  It would start to play a file and get stuck on 0 seconds.  If I put the iPod on shufle, it will stall on 0 seconds for 15 seconds or so and then move on to the next track and stall again and so on.   Seemingly randomly, it will play a few tracks but eventually start skipping again.  This will continue until the battery is depleted which is fairly quick since the drive is constantly spinning.
    My 160GB iPod Classic after restore attempts now is up to date with 2.0.4. and of course, nothing works as it should and I would say the skipping issue is worse than ever.
    When I connect with any of three USB connectors, the iPod mounts to the desktop as a grey/silver disk drive picon exactly like the Macintosh HD picon.   Then Finder will stall for a few minutes- spinning pinwheel.  Somehow, the dock is never affected and I am able to open other applications like Safari or tab through open windows- just no action on the desktop.  Eventually, iTunes automatically opens and Finder becomes responsive again.  At this point the grey drive picon on the desktop becomes a white drive mount picon, but the iPod does not mount in iTunes, yet.  At some point, the iPod attempts to sync, iTunes crashes with the spinning pinwheel and eventually times out and I am prompted to restore the iPod again.  Once restored,  the iPod properly mounts under devices in iTunes and, as I have done this several times, even occasionally changes to the regular iPod picon on the desktop.
    I have restored several times going as far a completely deleting iTunes from my iMac, downloading the latest directly from Apple.com, and attempting to restore again, but to no avail.
    I have even used the disk utility to verify and/or repair my Macintosh HD and iPod.
    It seems lots of folks are going through this ordeal.  Has anyone had any success in fixing the issue, even if only temporarily?

    one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
    This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
    Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • Several programs crash with Glib-GIO error

    in my notebook several programs crash with an error ouput:
    (here for firefox)
    (firefox:6303): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_simple_async_result_set_from_error: assertion `error != NULL' failed

    Speicherzugriffsfehler
    - firefox crashes every time i try to browse for a file (fileupload form).
    - nautilus --no-desktop crashes also before the gui is loaded with the same error output.
    - same to brasero
    - same to gnomebaker
    - evince crashes on open/file (again when browser should be opened)
    thunar works, seems there is a problem with nautilus or any gnome's lib
    on my another pc also running arch, there are no such problems.. would be great if anyone would help.
    every hint is welcome, since i'm pretty frustrated.. google and irc didn't help.
    thank you in advance

    Hi
    I experience a very similar problem.
    Whenever I insert a blank CDrom or a blank dvd some applications crash that somehow access the dvd drive. these are brasero or listen, that I'm aware of, for the moment.
    others like gnome-baker do fine. nautilus as well is doing fine.
    brasero:
    (brasero:25610): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_simple_async_result_set_from_error: assertion `error != NULL' failed
    (brasero:25610): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_error_free: assertion `error != NULL' failed

    Segmentation fault
    listen does:
    (listen.py:25694): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_simple_async_result_set_from_error: assertion `error != NULL' failed
    sys:1: Warning: g_error_free: assertion `error != NULL' failed

    /usr/bin/listen: line 1: 25694 Segmentation fault LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/firefox python -OO /usr/lib/listen/listen.py $@
    So it's bothering as all the time i want to burn something listen will crash.
    Otherwise I'm using gnome-baker for burning, so it's ok.
    but bothering.
    This might help you.
    If I can give u more information, just tell me (but I have to tell u: I'm not a big pro!)

  • FCPX crashs with 2nd disk, help needed

    Hi Everyone,
    My FCPX keep crashing on launching.
    FCPX 10.0.2
    Lion 10.7.2
    MBP 15' with two disks, SSD for system and HD for media (replaced the dvd).
    I know there might be thousands reason to lead the crashs, but here's the excatlly repo on my MBP.
    1. Unmount HD, run FCPX, everyting goes well.
    2. Mount HD, run FCPX, crashs everytime before I can see the UI.
    3. Unmount HD, run FCPS, mount HD, FCPX crashs in 2~3 sconds.
    Workaround applied.
    fresh install FCPX, even trial version
    delete event and performances
    repeir and verify disk premessions
    I'd like to appreciate all the guys that read my thread and specially who could share some lights on this issue.

    it connected... in side, originally
    I just removed the DVD and put a SSD into that room as my system drivers. The HD is untouched.
    As you seen in screenshot (show hidden file), if I deleted the .fcpuser and .fcplock, it'll autmatically create every time I run FCPX, even i mount this driver after FCPX launchs.
    All the video file is store in lightroomlibrary. and tones photos are in photos folder.
    Is it possible that FCPX will scan the file on my disks and happneds that one of video files is broken?
    I'm removing all the files to my mobiledrive, it'll take some minuts to see the result.

  • Autofs for samba mount workaround

    i wasnt able to get autofs to work with samba at all today.
    i at first tried to use the auto.smb template, but since its not documented in the wiki, i couldnt figure it out.  i did find this link that shed some light on it http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=885713 but still no workie.
    then i tried to follow the autofs wiki for the automount using samba, and that wouldnt work either.  i am on a domain, but tried all the possible combinations i could think of with straight hard coded password and username and couldnt even get that to work, then i tried to simply mount a public share that doesnt need creds using this samba method but that wouldnt work either.
    in the end i had to create an fstab entry to mount it, using a separate credentials file chmodded to 600.  whats up with autofs and samba?
    can anybody tell me the way they were able to work this out?
    some caveats that may stand out to someone who is more familiar with this;
    my hostname has a hyphen in it, e.g. hostname-100 so as i mentioned above about all the combinations, those included several with //hostname\-100/share which didnt work.  also, im on an internal domain so i tried all those combinations with
    //hostname-100.americas.domain.pvt/share
    and
    //hostname\-100.americas.domain.pvt/
    share as well,
    i also tried
    username=DOMAIN\user
    and
    username=DOMAIN\\user
    and
    username-user,domain=DOMAIN
    and in credentials file when i was using that i tried
    username=user
    password=pass
    domain=DOMAIN
    and again with the domain entry, and again like this
    username=DOMAIN\user
    password=pass
    and again like this
    username=DOMAIN\\user
    password=pass
    in the end i had to go with
    #/etc/fstab
    //hostname-100.americas.domain.pvt/backup /mnt/smb/hostname-100/backup cifs credentials=/path/to/creds/hostname-100 0 0

    yes, it's possible - but imho pointless. An fstab entry is just way simpler than creating a mount/automount file yourself. Also, systemd's fstab generator automatically takes care of options you might miss when creating the units yourself (like remote-fs.target ordering for remote shares).

  • FCP X Trial Crashes with Vignette.

    I'm trying to play around with the FCP X trial version with some 5DmII footage.  I apply the vignette "look" in effects which works fine, but when I try to edit the effect FCP X crashes.  I get the same results whether "Render" is turned on or not under preferences.
    I have deleted all of the FCP X trial files and reinstalled it with the same results.
    Here is the crash report:

  • Finishing touches with Samba

    Hi, how do I get it so I can mount with a normal user?  When I try I get:  mount: only root can do that
    Also, when I mount as root, it's only read access, how do I enable write access?  The account i'm logging in should have full control.
    Finally.. how do I get the samba browser to work in XFCE4.  It sees the network, but then doesn't show any computers?  I assume this is also because my user doesn't have access to mount?
    Finally II:  Whats a good way to setup permanant mounts?  I best I can see is to add the lines to fstab but I don't see anywhere to put in a password... as it is now, it'll actually stop the boot process to ask for passwords.
    hehe Finally III:  Anyone have any ideas how to go about getting networked printers to work?  I've only ever installed printers connected to the linux computer (which was hard).  Kinda scared to try and get networked printers (and a scanner) working.
    Thanks!

    Open /etc/fstab and check the line about your Samba-mount. In options you should add "user". Here's a line of my /etc/fstab allowing normal users to mount a disc in my DVD-RW:
    /dev/cdroms/cdrom1 /dvdrw iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0

    Check your smb.conf file. I've got Samba-server running with different shares and different access rights per share.

    I assume you're talking about XFFM, XFCE's filemanager? Editing your /etc/fstab will probably fix this.
    nehsa wrote:Finally II:  Whats a good way to setup permanant mounts?  I best I can see is to add the lines to fstab but I don't see anywhere to put in a password... as it is now, it'll actually stop the boot process to ask for passwords.
    Permamounts are done in /etc/fstab. It's possible to pass the username and password for networkshares in there aswell:
    //servername/sharename /mountdirectory smbfs username=userename,password=password 0 0
    nehsa wrote:hehe Finally III:  Anyone have any ideas how to go about getting networked printers to work?  I've only ever installed printers connected to the linux computer (which was hard).  Kinda scared to try and get networked printers (and a scanner) working.
    I have never done that before. Installing directly connected printers wasn't too hard tho, I followed Gentoo's guide to printing.

  • Thunar crashes because it can't find existing icons

    Here's a strange little Thunar bug. When I right-click on anything in a Thunar window, the file manager crashes with the message:
    Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon for stock: Icon 'Terminal' not present in theme
    aborting...
    Aborted
    What's weird is that I've seen this with several icon themes, all of which have stock "Terminal" icons. :?

    Yeah..  this is because thunar is currently compiled with a flag that treats warnings as fatal. See this post for where Benny talks about it.
    (I kind of wish Shadowhand would remove this flag for our compiles, but I merely copied my gnome-terminal.png icons to Terminal.png for this case)

  • [SOLVED] Share Multiple Directories With Samba On Arch Linux and XP

    Hello,
    I have had the worst luck so far with Samba, which is far more likely because of an error on my part than on Samba's.
    I can only seem to share one directory regardless of how I setup my smb.conf. And worse yet, if I mess with Samba, smb.conf, after the first time I set it up it doesn't work again until I reinstall my OS. Now I'm sure that reinstalling isn't the only option, but I haven't figured out how to make it work again any other way. I've tried uninstalling it, deleting it from the cache, deleting /etc/samba and so on, still can't connect to it from XP when I reinstall it.
    I'm running Arch64 and I want to share some directories with a laptop running Windows XP.
    I want to share my home folder, but have it accessible from XP only by me, share my mother's home folder, and have it accessible on XP only by her (well actually I guess it needs to be accessible by both, since i'm the admin), share my media-server (a collection of five hard drives where I store movies and such), and have it read/write by both of us. And finally share /srv so I can work on that from the XP computer as well. I think that's all. And I would like to share printers between the two computers. I would also like to access XP files from here.
    I've always been able to get the media-server to share, but that's it, nothing else. And it doesn't always work right. It doesn't seem to want to follow sym links, but like I say if I mess with it it will stop working all together. So I'm not sure what to do.
    A thought was to instead make a /media/samba-share directory and share that, and inside it have symlinks to my home, media-server, etc. However, that will only work if samba will follow symlinks for me.
    Here is the smb.conf I am planning to use at the moment:
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

    Now I wouldn't think I would need to list my home and mom's home seperately, but since [homes] has never worked for me in the past i thought i would give it a try. Does this look like something that would do what I am wanting?
    Otherwise I would delete [homes], [media-server], [theavataroftime], [christina], and [server] and replace them with just [samba-share] with all those as symlinks inside that directory as before mentioned.
    Anyway, thanks for the help. Any good guide on this matter would be appreciated, I have looked at several, but more can't hurt . Networking isn't my thing so to speak, so please be specific in any explanations. Thanks again.

    Well it seems that my trouble all started when I began using the 'printable = yes' option for shares. Since I removed that the troubles seem to have left me.
    Does anyone know why that is listed as on option in smb.conf here:
    # A publicly accessible directory, but read only, except for people in
    # the "staff" group
    ;[public]
    ; comment = Public Stuff
    ; path = /home/samba
    ; public = yes
    ; writable = yes
    ; printable = no
    ; write list = @staff
    As well as in a few other examples if it doesn't work? I seen the example and assumed that option was needed to print from those shared directories.
    Also, it seems that the comma is not needed between the 'valid users' names.
    Also, I guess it wasn't Windows XP's fault either but rather my own ignorance. I like the idea of blaming Windows better though.....
    I hope this servers to help others to aviod my mistakes.
