Thunderbolt WD Duo, does not show in Disk Utility

Hi Have imac 27 (late 2012) with 10.8.3 update OSX. Connecting to WD Thunderbolt Duo, the disk does not show in disk Utility, sys log or in any connection to the system. WD utility does not seems it either. Restart does not help. By disk returning to seller, the disk works fine on other comp (with the same cable, with the same power adapter)
Is there any issue known with the thunderbolt ports? Tried both all found on internet, but no resolution, to my issues.
Seems to be my imac hardware or maybee the software (thunderbotl 1.2) update.
Lukas

All thunderbolt port tried, cable exchanged, no change
I have done following procedure , no change
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

  • MacBook Optical Drive Does Not Show in Disk Utility

    Hi Everybody,
So I put a CD in my CD/DVD drive on my white 2009 Macbook and it made a funny sound. The CD did not register with the system. And when I open Disk Utility, it doesn't recognize the optical drive at all.
Is there anything I can do?
    Many thanks!

Can you or did you eject the cd? Then check apple (upper left corner) about this mac/ more / serial- ata in left panel. Does it show there. Recheck disk utilities and see if it is now there. No? Restart holding down command/option/p/r/ for three chimes. Try another cd. Same? shut down and do SMC reset.  Remove battery if you can and power cord hold down start button for 10 seconds. If battery is not removable hold down command/option/shift while pressing down the start button for 10 seconds.  Restart and retry. If still no drive showing, the optical drive is most likely bad.

If both your MacBook Pro and iPod are unable to "see" the Wi-Fi network provided by the AirPort Express, it is most likely NOT that you are missing an "airport card," but the Express may be the issue instead.
One quick test is to see if either device can "see" other Wi-Fi networks. If they can, then you can definately rule both of them out as the issue.
By default, the AirPort Express will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Can either device see this network? If not, then I would recommend that you perform a "factory default" reset on the Express, and then, check again.

  • I am installing snow leopard on a new drive unformatted but it does not show the disk to install it on.? do i need to format first with one partition?

I have installed a new drive on my mac book and more ram but the snow leopard install asks which to install the system on but then does not show the drive.
do I have to partition it and name it first. -- if so just one partition?

    Do this:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

  • 160gb Classic does not show in Disk management

    Hi
Ive had my 160gb ipod classic for about a year now and just recently it stopped showing up in itunes and it is not showing up in my computer. im running windows 7 64 bit. Ive looked for it every where in my computer, it does not show up in Disk management and when i plug it in windows says it does not recognize it. I ran the itunes diagnostic and it does not show the ipod being connected.  When i select it through the device manager it shows it as Unknown device and in the description it just says the "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" ive never seen this before. Ive also checked the drivers, according to windows theyre fine, at least thats what it tells me when i go to update them. and when i try to acces the driver details it says no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device. Im a bit frustrated because ive been looking every where and trying everything to attempt to fix this. Any insight would be appreciated.

You could definitely try uninstalling the USB drivers and reinstalling them. If that doesn't work plug your iPod into another computer and see if it shows up. If it does problem is the PC, if not, problem is the iPod.

  • Why the OWC 960GB Mercury Accelsior_E2 does not show in Disk Utilty ?

i try to mac pro 3.1 and 4.1
and both of them can not show in Disk Utilty, but i can seen in report

Have you tried using Disk Utlitiy to format it as Mac OS Journaled. I have an OWC SSD (260 gig) installed and it  showed up fine once I formatted it. I had to use it for a while as my startup disk because I was transferring stuff from my older Mac Pro. Once I did that, I changed startup disks and erased the SSD
so, in a sense it's there, but not being used now.  you may want to enable TRIM as well-which might be helpful
    http://www.mactrast.com/2013/11/enable-trim-ssds-os-x-mavericks/
I think there's a setting to show hard discs and internal disks, cd's and dvd's and connected servers, which I'm guessing is turned on
sorry I can't help you much more

  • Replacement Hard Drive does not appear in Disk Utility.

I've replaced the defective HDD in my MBP(A1278) with a 500GB Western Digital one after it failed the Hard Drive test in AST. The old drive is detected internally without issue but the new one does not show up in disk utitlity. I have reformatted to use a GUID table and have made sure it's partition is OSX Journaled. It doesn't show up at all. I proceeded to do an install using a USB drive adapter and the OS installed just fine(same drive), when I put it back in the MBP it still doesn't detect. I would suspect the cable but the old drive shows up and runs diagnostic just fine(fails). I've actually gone ahead and tried three other new drives(2 seagates(500GB, 1TB XT) and 1 500GB HGST) and none of them detect, only the original. Am I missing some sort of firmware update or is there a limited physical issue?
All help would be appreciated, genius bar isn't an option, the closest one is 400km away.

Until you replace the cable you won't know for sure. Do you have a SATA to USB adapter to connec these other drive to and to connect your original drive to? If you do connect the original drive and do a Verify Disk in Disk Utility. If it comes back OK, no repair needed or even if a repair is need that succeeds, your original drive is OK and it is the cable that is causing all the problems.
I suggest you stay away from WD drives. They don't have a good track record with Mac computers.

  • External hard drives not showing in disk utility

When I connect a new Eagle/Consus W-Series external hard drive enclosure to my 15" PB, the hard drive doesn't show-up in the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window. The only thing that shows is the drive in the PB. The hard drive in the enclosure is a WD SATA and is connected via USB cable. The same thing happens, or doesn't happen, when I'm connected via ethernet to my G5 2.3GHz Dual Core: when I open Disk Utility on the PB, the drive on the G5 doesn't show. What I'm trying to attempt is to mirror/clone Tiger from my PB onto the new, to me, G5 using SuperDuper.

Hi, Bob. I obviously didn't understand the situation properly, and now that I realize that, I'm afraid I still don't.
When the G5 is connected, via ethernet to my PB, the hard drive does not show-up in the PB's disk utility pane.
The G5 doesn't have a hard drive in it now, is that correct? So why connect it via Ethernet to the Powerbook?
If you're trying to clone the Powerbook's hard drive onto the G5's drive inside the external enclosure, all that needs to be connected is the external enclosure to the Powerbook, via USB cable. The G5 itself isn't involved in that process at all. When the G5's drive is in the enclosure and connected to the Powerbook, does it appear in Disk Utility on the Powerbook? If not, see my previous suggestions, with the exception of my comment about it not working with either computer.
If the SATA hard drive doesn't appear on the Powerbook's desktop or in Disk Utility when it is in the G5 and the computers are properly networked via Ethernet, recheck your sharing settings: the G5's drive must be shared to be visible to the Powerbook. In that mode, you may not be able to clone the Powerbook's drive to the other one, because the drive in the G5 is being used to run the G5. But if the G5's drive is partitioned, you should be able to clone the Powerbook's drive, via Ethernet, to a partition other than the one which contains the OS that's running the G5.
While the hard drive is in the external enclosure, I can hear it spinning, and am assuming that all the connections are working properly.
If the drive spins, you can be sure it's getting power, and that's good. But you can't safely conclude from that that any or all of the data connections are working properly; in fact the evidence suggests the contrary.
In short, there may be not one but two problems at work here: incorrect sharing settings when the two computers are networked, and a bad cable, connection, or enclosure when the drive is connected to the Powerbook via USB.
EDIT: Let me also add that if the only Tiger installer discs you have are the ones that came with the Powerbook, then having copies of that Tiger installation on both of your computers would be a violation of the software license that accompanied those discs, which entitles you to have Tiger installed on only one computer at a time. If that's the case, you should really buy a retail Tiger installer disc to use on the G5.

  • Partition Tab not showing in Disk Utility

    Hello again everyone,
I'm attempting to partition my LaCie 2TB (RAID1) Disk in Disk Utility, however the partition tab is not showing up..
There are 4 items visible in the Disk Utility window:
    1)  the Internal OS Disk
    2)  the LaCie 2TB (RAID1) Disk
    3) & 4)  the two slices/partitions of the LaCie mirrored RAID
I select the 2TB LaCie RAID1 Disk, however it only shows the "First Aid" & "RAID" tabs.
The "Partition" (as well as "Erase" & "Restore") tabs are not available or shown.
When I select the Internal OS Disk all the Tabs are shown, and when the 2 slices or partitions of the RAID1 are selected it shows the "First Aid, Erase, Partition, Restore" tabs..
Am I missing a step here??  I know I'm not supposed to select the slices/partitions of the RAID, but instead to select the LaCie 2TB Disk itself, however this is the only option which does not show any "Partition" Tab..
Any assistance is GREATLY APPRECIATED..  Thank you!

    Have you tried this:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
I'm sort of confused as to why you would partition a 3 GB drive into just a single 1 TB partition, but that's what I understood you to say. Is this 3 TB drive installed in an enclosure that actually supports a drive of that size? Older enclosures may not and should not be used.

  • Time Machine HD does not appear in Disk Utility

    Hello,
I used Time Machine towards the end of 2007 on an external SATA HD through USB 2.0. I would frequently turn it on and let it do its thing and shut it off. One day I attempted to use Time Machine and it did not mount on my desktop. I've been searching around trying to discover a solution to this problem without any success. The HD does not show up in Disk Utility nor does it show up in XP when it is connected to my mobo with SATA. I did manage to see it under "Disk Management" in XP but was unable to assign it a drive letter. It showed the amount of space used but other than that I haven't been able to get it to work. I have since purchased a larger HD for time machine and all I really want to do is transfer over the contents of the currently non-working HD to the new HD and then format the old one. I'm asking around to see if any of my friends have an external SATA enclosure so I can find out if it is the enclosure or the HD but in the mean time is there anything I can do in Leopard (or Windows XP) to find out if the information is on the HD or if the HD is damaged?

I am sorry - I simply do not understand your instructions!
I have 2 Time Capsules and have been using both.  However a few days ago they quit working.  I have had to turn off Time Machine because I am getting hourly alerts that back-up failed because there is not enough space.  It does not delete old backups to provide additional space.  I am willing to erase both to try to get them working again but I cannot figure out how to erase and setup the drives.  Hence I turned Time Machine off.
There is nothing wrong with the MBP internal hard drive.  "Sparse bundle" is total Greek to me!  My wifi network appears to be working properly.  The internal HD is mounted in Disk Utilities and verified as working properly.  I am a long time user of Apple but I am still a novice (Level 1)!
Perhaps I should start a new thread.

  • External Hard Drive doesn't mount, not showing in Disk Utility

I have had this Western Digital external hard drive for a few months now and until this evening it worked fine. It won't show up on my Macbook Pro and it is not present in the Disk Utility section. The light on the external hard drive is on so it doesn't appear to be a power issue. I have another of the same exact hard drive and it works fine. I tried switching USB cables and even power supplies and I can't get it to work. Does anyone know how to recover the files or is the hard drive toast?

Something's wrong inside the case; it's either a problem which is preventing the computer from properly connecting to the drive or the drive itself is dead.
Data recovery from a failed drive can only be done by a professional service, which can charge hundreds or thousands of dollars.

  • Hard drive not showing in Disk Utility?

Recently, I went to install Windows 10 via Bootcamp and set up two partitions (one for OS X, 500gb and one for Windows, 500gb). I accidentally installed Windows onto of the OS X partition and somehow the Windows OS disappeared so I currently have no OS to boot in to. I can run Yosemite off of a USB, but when I go to Internet Recovery or Disk Utility, it only shows this.
      Disk Description : Media
      Total Capacity : 0 Bytes
      Connection Bus : SATA
      Write Status : Read/Write
      Connection Type : Internal
      S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
      Partition Map Scheme : Unformatted
I know the hard drive can't be dead because this is a brand new laptop and it was working just fine before. How can I get the drive fixed?
Instead of buying DiskWarrior since it's $110, can I just buy a new 1TB HDD and put it into the computer? Can I hook up my laptop via Firewire to my iMac and reformat the drive or something?

Or try and boot the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys.  The display should show a revolving globe.  By following the instructions, this will connect the MBP to the Apple servers and allow you to erase the HDD and reinstall the ORIGINAL OSX.
    Ciao.
The problem with this option is that the computer does not recognize that there is any space on the hard drive itself. The hard drive is just labeled as "Media" and has 0 bytes available. I tried using GUID partitions but Disk Utility says the drive is too small.

  • New HDD not showing in disk utility

    Help please!
i can up on a broken G5 i have replaced the HDD. now i am trying to install tiger. but the new internal HDD is not showing up in disk utility.
i plugged my passport in and it popped right up.
some one please let me know what you think.

Well, having a had hard drive connected may cause a grey screen (if the system cannot successfully perform a check of connected devices). Not sure about the fan.
If you have not done so yet, be sure to try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not help, you can also try resetting the SMU (power management).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
    Follow the procedure precisely.
It is also possible that the old drive was not bad and your iMac has some other problem. Did you ever test the previous drive on another Mac (or connected externally) to confirm it was faulty? That +other problem+ may be what you are experiencing now.
Also, I asked this previously but, are you able to start up the iMac using the optical drive, with a Mac OS X installation disc in there?
