Tilde in Passwords

Hi
I had a WLAN password like this: "xxxxxx~xxxx" an OS X 10.6.4 could not produce the Tilde ~ in passwords. Neither in the network module nor in password forms in all browsers.
It´s really funny that ALL other special characters are allowed in passwords.
Can anyone reproduce this error?
greetz knowname

I have never had your problem, but it is not clear to me if the failure with you is only in WLAN passwords or user passwords and that ilk. The only problem I had was when Tiger, i think, refused characters using three keys. Apples advice as been to keep it simple but the 'funnies' as I call them,, shorten the passwords as there is more than the alphabet to work on and I find them easier to remember. With browsers of course one is at the mercy of the site vagaries.

  • Problem with tilde character in password

I've discovered an odd bug in 10.5.8 (updated from my 10.5.6 Retail copy) where a tilde in a password field fails to get passed to a remote macintosh.
Using a password such as abc~xyz is valid for setting up an account and logging into the system (or sudo/admin access).
It does not work when authenticating to a 10.5 system remotely from another 10.5 system for any of the following that I've tried: AFP, ssh, sftp or ftp (both from command line or from an application such as CyberDuck), and Screen Sharing.
It does work, however, when authenticating into a 10.5 system (as a user whose password has a tilde) from a system running 10.4.
    To reproduce:
On system 'A' running 10.5, create a user 'resu' with the above password.
On system 'B' running 10.5, try to access the 'resu' user account on 'A'.
    This should fail.
On system 'C' running 10.4, try to access the 'resu' user account on 'A'.
    This should work.

I would suspect it is to do with the remote connection. You don't say precisely 'where' the tilde is lost. Is it at your end (Mac?) or somewhere in the probably Windows servers involved in the remote. In an earlier OS my PB baulked at 3 key characters. It took two key characters. I have passwords that use all the 'normal' characters and the shift + top row things. I also do definitely use tildes. I haven't tried a tilde with a web mail password but the 'top row' works.
Test the permutations. If we are about user PWs (my working hypothesis), set up a test user. You can always change the PW with th boot disk.

  • I have no folder for firefox in application support... where can I find the stored passwords from my time machine back up!!?

Everywhere I look it says I should have a folder for Firefox in library/applicationsupport/ BUT I don't have one! I'm looking to restore passwords from a time machine back up but there's no Firefox folder so I don't where to look. I even did a fresh install of Firefox on my mac and even then it never created a Firefox folder in library/applicationsupport/... they must be store somewhere in my back up...!?

Hello kamilr, check also in :
    ~/Library/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/<profile folder>
The tilde character (~) refers to the current user's Home folder, so ~/Library is the /Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library folder.
note that in mac 10.7 and above, the ~/Library folder is hidden by default, see : http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders#Mac_OS_X
when you find the file seek for '''key3.db''' and '''signons.sqlite''' files.
Your passwords are stored in two different files, both of which are required:
'''key3.db''' - This file stores your key database for your passwords. To transfer your saved passwords, you must copy this file along with the following file.
    '''signons.sqlite''' - Saved passwords

  • Galleries with Passwords won't upload

I've tested this a bunch. I have tried to upload Galleries with a password but each time nothing happens: nothing. The dropdown menu just disappears and no uploading activity occurs. I've tried adding to the gallery directly from Events, and from Albums: nothing. If I upload an album without a password, then it the Gallery uploads.
The one time a password protected Gallery acted like it was successfully uploading, the uploading icon (rotating arrows) remained for 8 hrs until I had to force quit, and nothing had been uploaded.

Do you have any non standard characters in the gallery name: quote marks, apostrophe, forward and backward slashes (/ \), brackets ([ ]), tilde (~), exclamation point , question mark (?), "at" sign (@), number sign (#), dollar sign ($), ampersand (&), asterisk (*), colon (:), equal sign (=), comma (,), and double quotation marks ("). If you have any of them remove and try again.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Command Tilde works in most apps but not Safari or Preview

    Hi
The Command-Tilde command (window-switching) works in most of my applications (Chrome, Firefox, jEdit, Finder, Terminal, Xcode(sometimes), etc.)  However, the command-tilde does not work in Safari or Preview.  Is there a way to fix this?  I find it quite annoying and have not been able to find a solution.  I have tried resetting the System Preferences shortcut and that did not work.  Uninstalling/Reinstalling Safari & Preview does not seem to be an option.  I am not willing to reinstall Lion unless absolutely necessary.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    As Guest, test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Problems with password for alias email address

I am using two e-mail addresses, one the original @verizon.net and an alias I set up @alias.com
I was regularly -- but it seemed sporadically -- getting this following message, sometimes when I tried accessing, but sometimes just when the Apple Mail was open but I wasn't doing anything:
Enter the password for user “ -- alias address --” on IMAP server “mail.--alias--.com”
For a while I hit 'cancel' and everything worked fine.
But then I went into "account" and tried to fix the problem ... and I think I changed the password for the alias. In any case, I am unsure what the password is...and I can't see it on Preferences/Accounts.
Now the root "Inbox" and the "alias" addresses have the tilde by them, indicating offline. Nothing I do gets rid of the tilde. I get that same request for password.
Nonetheless I am still getting all e-mails through the secondary "Verizon" account. That does not have the tilde and is receiving all my e-mails.
I want to clean this up...and avoid the annoying continuing often request for password.
AS I WAS TYPING THIS, the message from Apple Mail popped up again. I had to hit 'cancel' or 'OK' (back and forth, each one) several times before it stopped popping up. This has happened before.

Have spent hours in Preferences/Account ... deleted account, replaced account ... tried SSL on and SSL off. Read "Help/If you can't receive messages". Used Connection Doctor.
I CAN send messages with my alias but am not receiving to it. This is a major problem for me.
There seems to be no way to find out what my correct password should be. I've got two in storage, one much more likely than the other. But neither works.
I'm also uncertain of incoming mail server correct name.

  • Mail error -- tilde?

I have four email accounts in Mac Mail. Yesterday, two of the accounts on the same server quit working. The account names were grayed-out and there was a tilde (~) to the right. I checked the settings and password and everything was as before -- but the accounts could not send or receive.
Just now, my .MAC mail account quit working with the same symptoms.
I've searched the Mac site and google, but I can find no reference as to what the tilde (~) means or how to fix it.
I'm calling that symbol a tilde, but I'm not sure what it actually is. It looks something like the mathematical "approximately" symbol and is in a gray circle -- a circle that would ordinarily have the number of unread emails.
So, how did I get in this mess and how do I fix it?
    Thanks

I've searched the Mac site and google, but I can find
no reference as to what the tilde (~) means or how to
    fix it.
If you put your mouse over it, don't you get a text saying "click to take accounts online" ? The symbol means the account is offline.

  • Icon next to Inbox is a "tildes", a squiggly line going horizontally

Tildes icon next to inbox in Mail, I clicked it, got prompted for password, it went away now.
Any idea what it was or why it was there?
    Thank You!

  • Drag and drop very long password from host MacBook to guest iPod Touch?

    Hi,
iPod Touch 64GB Software version 3.1.2. MacBook as in signature.
When I built my home wireless network, I chose a very long and complex password (63 characters) to protect the access to my network. Once the passphrase was randomly chosen, it was no problem to copy/paste it from the MacBook to the wireless router. The key is WPA (AES, TKIP)
But now, with the iPod i've just purchased, I have found no way to achieve that kind of transfer. I have tried to type the password manually into the iPod, but in spite of several very careful attempts, no success.
    Please, two questions:
    - does the iPod operating system support that kind of key? (WPA -AES,TKIP).
    - if it does, is there any way I can copy it from the MacBook, and somehow paste it in the iPod, at the required location? Or any other way to "sync" the iPod so that it imports and remembers the password?
I know that a work around would be either to cancel encryption in my home network, or to change the password to something much more simple. I could do that, but that's the last ditch. I am not security obsessive compulsive, but the amount of private users networks around me are so many, and all of them are encrypted. There must be a reason for that
    Thanks in advance,
    Charly

Nearly three months with no response? I'm facing the very same issue. The fundamental problem is the inability to enter funky characters (backtick/grave accent, pipe/vertical bar, tilde, etc) in the Wifi password box.
Two possible solutions I can offer:
    1) Enter the password in the Mail app, then copy/paste to the Wifi password box.
    a. Go to the Mail application
    b. Select the To or CC field
    c. Press "123" access the non-alpha keys, then "#+=" to get access to grave accent (`), pipe (|), curly braces ({}), and tilde (~).
    d. It's easiest to do the actual composition in the body of the email, so copy your funky characters from the To:/CC: field regularly.
    d. When you're done, select all the characters, copy, and paste into the Wifi password box.
    2) Email yourself the password and temporarily use a simple password on your network to retrieve said email from the Touch. Copy and paste the password into the Wifi password box.

  • IChat always makes me enter an AOL password. I DON"T USE AOL. Please help

When ever I try to make my iChat status to available a box pops up with the heading AOL Instant Messenger password and under it it says iChat can’t log in to (my account) because your login ID or password is incorrect. My iChat password is only 7 characters. This is really frustrating. I don't have an AOL account and my iChat is under mac.com. PLEASE HELP

    HI,
If in iChat > Preferences > General Section you elect to have all the Buddy List gathered  in one list
then they can look like this.  (It is Default to Collect them in one list)
    Uploaded with Skitch!
As you can see my GoogleTalk ID has dropped out  (Not a Status setting by me to Off Line or anything else)
It has the Sharply pointed Tilde like Symbol ~
Clicking that symbol confirm it is Off Line and that I should wait a few minutes and try again.
As you have a different Message it would seem that iChat is not accessing the KeyChain Properly.
    Open Keychain Access in Application/Utilities
Highlight Login in the top left area if needed.
Highlight Passwords in lower left in needed.
Find the @mac.com name in th eright hand panel
Highlight and then use the i Button
In the new Panel, tick the Show Password Box
(enter your Password for your Login and Allow Once Button)
Does the Password now Show Up ?
Is it what you think it is ?
    Edit if required and Save.
We may need to check if you have Ownership and Read and Write permissions on the Keychain if that does not help.
It is late where I am and it will be a while before I get back to further replies.

  • HT5622 what characters are accceptable for a apple icloud password

what characters are acceptable in the apple id PASSWORD? other than alpha and numbers  i used  a tilde  icloud accepted my password   then later i tried to open itunes and it did not like my pass word stating it did not accept the tilde,  for now  i changed my password    is there a glitch in the o/s?

And to answer the question in your title, stick to letters (no diacriticals) and numbers - no punctuation, spaces, or odd characters. Your password must be at least 8 characters - 12 would be better - and must include at least one numeral, one lower case character and one upper-case character.

  • Keypad: Locate Accent Key, standard keyboard is under Tilde Key

How can I get the ascent key (which is under the Tilde key, top left on a standard keyboard) on an iPhone? You would think by holding down the Tilde ~ key on the iPhone the key would appear.

hold the vowel you want the accent mark over and it will appear with a series of letters
This doesn't solve the problem, which is that some people need to make a ` (grave accent) all by itself for passwords. If you know a way to do that, a lot of people will be interested in it.

  • Every week I seem to lose my passwords for my Mac Pro mail service. Cant get or send emails.

Today, as in the past, all of a sudden my email (apple Mail) lost my passwords and I cannot send or receive emails.  All the mailboxes have icons of a tilda or a stop sign.  Where do I go to get this fixed? I have tried a private contractor, and ATT support help to no avail.

Mac OS X 10.4.7 introduced connection issues in Mail similar to what you’re observing as a result of (according to the documentation) “Mail now supports connecting to mail servers through a SOCKS proxy”. If that’s the problem, it can usually be fixed by going to System Preferences > Network, choosing the network port configuration used to connect to Internet from the Show popup menu and disabling the SOCKS Proxy in the Proxies section, if it’s enabled.
And while you’re at it, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.

  • Time machine back up passwords

    Hi all
I have a time capsule that is set up to use accounts to govern access to the internal disks. I have 3 accounts, one for each of the three PCs around the house (all macs of one sort or another)
I can access the timecapsule disk using finder from each of the machines but when set up with the same information time machine fails to mount the disk. The logs on the time capsule indicate an incorrect username/password.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Many Thanks,
    Robin

  • Real Tilde Symbol on Macbook13 is missing Can only find the superscript one

I recently looked up where to find the true Tilde sign (that's the wavy line symbol) since the one I can see on upper case of the key next to the Z on the keyboard makes the wrong one. I tried it and it made a straight line with right-angled symbol. Wrong one for the Tilde.
OK so the next thing I tried was Alt +N key and that gave a superscript Tilde still not the right type. That one was designed to go over the top of a letter so it highlights with an orange bar to show it's superscript.
The reason I know it's wrong is because I tried using Alt+N in a password that I use to get onto a site where I do online purchases and it wouldn't accept it.
I have a password that contains about four symbols with letters and numbers and the symbols require a Tilde and a # sign. The password was rejected and the only way I could get it to log me in was if I copy pasted the password using a Tilde from Microsoft Word's Symbols list, ported to my Macbook from my PC in a simple .doc file and then it worked.
I'm gobsmacked' that the Mac system hides away or even doesn't have a proper Tilde sign.
I went into the System preferences and checked out my English Flagged Keyboard layout and showed the Keyboard layout menu on screen. I tried every combination of every Alt and Shift and Cmd key with that list and nowhere is there a proper Tilde. In the end I gave up and changed my password to one that doesn't contain this key which has been so frustrating not being able to use one on the mac.
Is it hiding somewhere? Where have they buried it and does anyone know why?

I didn't get the British Layout anywhere - it was on my Macbook 13 purchased new in the UK.
It is really impossible for a totally new Mac to have those layouts included, which are special add-ons which some people install for PC keyboards, or because they want a PC layout. Something is not right there. You should ask the place where you bought that machine how your OS could have had foreign stuff added to it like that and maybe express concern about whether it was really "new."
I've been to the Layouts and note that there is a British Layout with a ghosted tick in the box that can't be removed.
That is how it should be.
There's two other British Layouts one showing in Brackets (PC 105) and the next one down is British (PC 105 Alt) it will allow me to tick either of those two latter ones but when I untick them the ghosted British one still won't allow me to Tick it.
It doesn't matter, just untick those two PC layouts. Or you can check the box for Show Input Menu in Finder, so you can use the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder to switch to plain British.
Anyhow as you see from another of my replies here I've found the result but imagine my frustration
I can certainly understand your frustration -- those non-Apple layouts cannot fit your keyboard and should never have been put on your machine, and no one trying to help would ever imagine that they could be on your machine without you putting them there either.
