Tile Patterns in Perspctive?

Is it possible for tile patterns to align properly to the perspective grid?

No. Only if you apply the pattern to a form without perspective, then expand the pattern fill and attach it to a grid plane

  • When I create & tile patterns in AI CS6, I see unwanted seams, both onscreen & when I print

Depending on the percentage of zoom I use to view the patterns, the swatch bound seams show up in various locations. The more I zoom in, the less I see the seams, so I figured it was a screen glitch. But, when I save the file and open it in photoshop, I still see the seams. And when I print to my Epson Stylus Photo R2000, the image is crisp and beautiful, but those tiny seam lines are still showing up in print.
    * How do I avoid pattern seams, both onscreen & when I print?

So here's what I've learned so far:
To remove those unsightly pattern seams on your web-only files, make sure to choose "art optimized" when saving for web.
    (Thanks Mike!)
As for high-res print, I am still unable to remove the seams. When I open my AI file in Photoshop, the seams are still viewable, and when I print the file on premium presentation paper, they are clearly there.
Now, I can save the AI file as a 'high quality print' PDF, and when I open it in Photoshop with anti-aliased checked, the image looks clean, but the seams are there. If I uncheck anti-aliased, the seams disappear, BUT the image edges are pixelated.  Are there any other suggestions out there for printing Illustrator cs6 patterns W/O seams?  Thank you!!

  • Pattern background overlap

I'm having problems creating pattern swatches in cs6, because I can't seem to solve the problem of  the background overlapping and hiding foreground shapes. I can make patterns without a background and I think I've worked out how to prevent the problem with a simple grid, but when I make a brick tile pattern, whichever overlap options I choose, at least one of the foreground shapes gets partly obscured by the overlapping background. I'm used to making seamless patterns in previous versions of Illustrator, by using guides and grids, then defining the pattern using a background rectangle but this option doesn't seem to be available in CS6, so if I can't solve the problem, it's back to CS5 :-(
    Anyone else overcome this problem?

Hi. I seem to have solved this problem, but thought I'd post screenshots anyway in case anyone else is struggling with it. Above are two screenshots of a pattern with a brick by column tile type. I've exaggerated the colours to try and show the problem. The first one shows how the pink background rectangle, if it's placed in the centre of the tile, cuts off the left edge of the black motif (shown as a grey motif in the dimmed area). If you change the overlap options, the other side gets cut off. I found that if you move the background rectangle so that it covers just one quarter of the tile, as shown in the second screenshot, with the overlap on the same edges as any overlap of the motifs, the problem is solved. Any overlap of the motifs also need to be confined to either the top edge, or the bottom edge, and the left edge or the right edge. It can't overlap both (at least I don't think so). I also made the background rectangle the same size as the tile (which is defined in the pattern options panel). I know this sounds complicated, believe me, I've wracked my brains over it for ages, but once I was able to visualize what was going on, it all gradually became clearer. I think once I've got the hang of it, it will be easier than using guides and defining the pattern. It's certainly easy to use for creating simple patterns, but the more complicated patterns take a bit of thinking about. I can't say I've had a problem with blends or symbols. What happens if you try to save a pattern with a blend or symbol?

  • Pattern alignment

So I'm working on floor tile patterns with Illustrator. I love this program. The other day, I found (using the magical F1 key) that I can make a single 2-directional repeat of the pattern and make a swatch so I don't have to draw hundreds of rectangles. This is an enormous time saver and I'm very excited to have this feature.
My problem is this: I get everything done and ready to go, finish for the day, and save and close the file. I opened the file again today and found that all of the patterns are misaligned and out of place from where I want them to be.
Argh.  This happens whether I'm working with a PDF or an AI file.
Is there a way to lock the pattern position so that it doesn't get reset when I open the file? I've tried locking the layers as well as locking the objects, but still no luck with the patterns staying where I want them.
    Thank you!

I imagine this would trump the advantage of smaller file size when using pattern swatches
In fact, expansion of Pattern Fills is one of the items Adobe lists in its knowledgebase as a means by which to reduce file size.
Pattern Fills are an old construct. Under the hood, the artwork being used for the pattern starts at the ruler origin and proceeds across the entire document. It is effectively masked (like a clipping path) by the paths to which it is applied. This is why, for example, FreeHand users who used alot of pattern fills in maps found it hugely advantageous to make composite paths out of any paths that shared the same pattern fill; otherwise, the whole pattern fill array was repeated.
A Pattern Fill is not the kind of newer construct like Symbols, where the artwork is stored in the file just once and then referenced for multiple positions.
It would be very helpful if the patterns would simply stay put.
Yes it would, and they certainly should. I am able to make a transformed pattern fill stay put between launches, depending on how/when/where the Transform Pattern Fills preference and/or the Transform Both command is toggled. But I was unable to boil it down to a reliable sequence. I suspect it's a ramification of yet another instance wherein Illustrator treats something that should clearly be document specific as a general pref--but I can't say that with confidence, because I can't get consistent and reliable results, and frankly lost interest. It smells like another one of those things one would have to keep a journal on to avoid tripping over it again later.
So if you're going to do this, go ahead and expand the pattern fill. There will still be more tiles than necesary, but the array will be confined to bounds of the masking path.
I do have a fuzzy recollection of a discussion in this forum years ago wherein Teri Petit explained the unwanted shifting behavior better. But I could not locate that, either.

  • Pattern preview?

is there anyway to preview patterns?
Some pattern libraries come with the individual square tiles, though may don't.
It would be nice to find a way to preview the way the tiles pattern will look...or at least get a better look at the tile.
The thumb nail the in pattern swatch box is too small to get a good view.
    Thanks

I don’t know any such way other than simply creating a Pattern Layer.
One might be able to automate creating a catalog of loaded patterns, but that would be of little use when editing a file or if one frequently creates new patterns.

  • Dot patterns maxes out memory?

I am need of some help...I have to create a rather large dot pattern...image size 53.88"w x 49.81"h...I have my dot sizes and spacing figured out, but when I step and repeat them, it really bogs down my machine, and eventually gives me an error stating that I am out of memory, and it won't let me go any further.
I can really use some help on this...maybe I am not using the right program...that doesn't matter to me, I just need to make to pattern work.  I have Design Premium CS5, so if I need to use a different program, I can.
    Please Help!!!

Rather than creating a vector path for each dot, create a repeating tile pattern.

In step 8 you create you bounding box, I suggest you create one to a specific size (eg: 1" x 1"), then use that value to when moving objects, so that they will register for example on the left and right edge of the tile.

    Hi Rohit,
It looks like maybe there aren't any other tile patterns available that match the structure of your report. You may find the Help topic below useful in understanding available tile patterns:

  • Vanishing Point Help!!

Hi, I'm using Photoshop CS2 and have a really annoying problem with the vanishing point filter.
I am using vanishing point to add different carpet tile patterns onto the floor of a room set image. To do this I am creating the pattern in a seperate document as a birds eye view (this is quite a large file). I then copy this, open vanishing point and paste.
The annoying thing is after opening photoshop this method will work for the first 2 maybe 3 patterns but on the fouth the vanishing point filter just wont open. If i try to copy just half the pattern it will open and as i go on it then wont even open with half the pattern copied so i have to copy a quater of the pattern until it gets to a point where i have to restart photoshop and 'hey presto' it will now copy the full pattern over into vanishing point!
After each pattern I complete i make sure to purge the history and clipboard and i have no other programs open at the same time.
So my question is why will it work for the first three but not anymore?!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Jeremiah,
Please mention the exact version of Photoshop that was used to create the VPE and also the version of After Effects that you are using with the details of Operating system.

  • Removing stains / objects

    Dear all,
I'm totally new to photoshop elements, I'd like some help/tips on removing certain aspects (in this case stains) from a picture. I'm selling furniture online on Steigerhout Furniture therefore it's extremely important the pictures on that site are perfect.
I'm like someone to point out the best way to clean up the water stains in below picture.
    Thanks.

I'd suggest whatever method you use to remove the spacers while you are at it. The spacers to balance the table are something that really distracts from your table.
If the pattern fix looks too obvious, you might consider either using a different example for your advertisement or replace the ground with a tile texture..
Here is my version of replacing the tile. I used a Filter Forge to create the tile pattern I used to replace the stained patio tiles. If you have any photos of tiled patios or courtyards, you could use that to replace the tile. You might also be able to find textures made from real patio tile.
I used free transform tools...mostly free transform<distort... to get the tile in place. I think the tiles' perspective could be improved a bit more than I did in my example.
If you go this route, you'll need to fake the shadows. I used black paint blurred to simulate the shadows.
Shadows: Paint on a layer under the table that is selected with black paint where shadow should go. Blur the paint with gaussian blur. Place shadow layer in Multiply blend mode and mask out or erase shadow where it overlaps table or is not desired.
I also did a graduated blur effect to help keep the house elements from stealing focus. I did this the same method as I used in your other post about outlining an object with blur.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/748699?tstart=0
For the tile, I had to duplicate the tile layer because it was too bright for the environment and put the duplicate in Luminosity blend mode and I set it's opacity to taste. It was pretty low. I ended up also using brightness contrast on the end result because I felt it still did not match the brightness and contrast of the court yard scene.

  • Looping symbol swap

I am a graphic designer and rudimentary coder at best, so I apologize in advance if this should be a no brainer.
My goal is to display random repeating tile patterns that overlap.  The original files are .png format with transparency.  I wish to show how they fit within a pattern building system that allows for multiple combination options.
To keep file sizes down, I tiled each of the small png files to fill my stage and converted them to symbols.  They fall into two symbol groups: Pos and Neg with a number sequence after.
What I'd like to do is have one Pos and one Neg display and change randomly on a loop. With the hundreds of different symbols, this would show a massive amount of possible combos.
I searched for a solution and the best I could find was this: "Call random symbol" https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1110407?start=0&tstart=0http://

i am not sure how your composition is but let's assume that you have symbols named symbol_1, symbol_2 etc...
You can append them randomly to the stage as follows and play their timeline.
    var myVar = Math.floor((Math.random()*6)+1);
         var stage = sym.$("Stage");
              var myAni = sym.createChildSymbol("Symbol_" + myVar, "stage");
              myAni.appendTo(stage);
This seems like a good starting point.  I tried it almost as is by adding the code to compositionready for my Stage.  I changed "Symbol_" to "Neg" and it didn't show anything in the browser.  As such I have a few questions:
    1. This solution appends the Stage.  I eventually need to place two random symbols.  Should I be targeting something like place-keeper rectangles vs. the Stage?
    2. The Math.random()*6:  I'm guessing the 6 is replaced with the number of symbols in each category and the +1 is because 0 could be generated?  Does that also mean that the total of 6 should be one less than the entire total?
    3. When naming a symbol library that goes into double or triple digits, for coding purposes do you leave off the zeros in Neg01 or Neg001?
    4. And finally, is there a better or easier solution than this for what I want to do?
    Thank you, Michael

In CS4, navigate to: Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts > Modify > Symbol
You can then set up your shortcut.

  • Unwanted paths showing after cropping to make a repeat pattern tile.

I'm trying to make a repeat pattern tile (using CS5 on Windows 7), but when I crop the pattern, the expanded paths underneath become visible as on the flowers below.
This is what I did after creating the artwork:
Used the rectangle tool to make a box with fill/stroke directly on top of the artboard..
Select all > Expand (selecting stroke only, not fill)
Deselect the cropping box and grouped the remaining objects.
Reselected the cropping box and grouped all objects
    Pathfinder > Crop
I'm guessing it may have something to do with the fact I used a gradient on the flowers but have no idea how to resolve it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
PS. Please excuse me if this explanation is really poorly worded...I've only ever used Illustrator for fashion technical sketches so my knowledge is pretty limited.

Followed your advice above, and hopefully it will work. The only issue is it's a bit time consuming they way I'm doing it, as I'm having to delete the outermost objects first, then delete any objects which are partially inside the rectangle, otherwise I find some of the objects inside the rectangle are deleted too:
At the moment for the objects that are partially inside the box, I'm using the scissors tool to cut the path where it crosses the rectangle. Is there an easier solution to this problem?

The error message "No more virtual tiles can be allocated" appears when I try to use the effects in the quick editing mode in my Elements 13. The baton OK has to be pressed several times for loading all effect patterns. The error returns when selecting the particular pattern.
The problem does not appear, if PH Elements 13 is executed in the administrator mode.
The available computer resources are rather  large enough: CPU INTEL i7 4 cores,  16GB RAM, 1TB HDD + 32GB SSD, Windows 8.1.
Please, advice how to solve this problem? Maybe, there is patch or updating available?

    Dear n_pane,
Thank you for the quick answer. In the meantime I found other way to pass by the problem. I increased the cache level up to the maximum value 8.
The errors reported as "No more virtual tiles can be allocated" vanish, but I still do not understand, why PSE 13 cannot work properly by the lower cache levels, having available maximum resources it needed (10443 MB RAM and 26.53GB SSD space for scratches), or cannot collaborate with the fast SSDs properly.
I wish you all the best in the New Year 2015!

  • Determining size of pattern tiles in cc 2014

In previous versions of Photoshop, I could hover my cursor over the small tile window of a pattern and receive the specific size of any given pattern tile. In CC 2014, it doesn't happen. How can I determine the size of a seamless pattern tile I'm using in CC 2014?

I believe that's a bug in photoshop cc 2014 and hopefully will get fixed in the next update.
In the meantime you could get the size from the pattern display when using the Paint Bucket Tool set to pattern or Edit>Fill>Pattern.

  • Issues with pattern fill in ps 6. Why is it making each tile a different color?

HELP!!! I've used the Fill>Pattern to tile my seamless patterns tons of times and never had this issue. Suddenly , it started making each tile on the large canvas a different color when I apply Fill>Pattern. At first I thought it was a tip or guide to see the repeat edges , but it shows up in print preview too. What did I do and how do I correct it?

Is this photoshop 6 or photoshop cs6?
If it's cs6, check that you aren't using scripted patterns for the pattern fill.
Also, check the blending mode and opacity in the fill dialog.

  • How to create a custom pattern that tiles without borders

I know that I can save a pattern as a swatch and use it as fill, but how to create a shape that tiles without borders?
My pattern now has closed paths on its edges which show up in the tiling. I don't know how to create it with open paths.
    Thanks for your help!

    rahneo,
As I (mis)undersatnd it, you may Direct Select and delete the unwanted path segments.
Deselect first before (each time) you do it.
Otherwise, you may create a nofill/nostroke rectangle covering the exact part you wisg to have in the tile and bring it to the bottom of the stack of objects that forms the tile.
