Time Capsule Advanced Settings

Is there any manual or link online that can point me in a direction to understand the advanced settings better on the new 802.11ac Time Capsule? For example, sharing disks over WAN and global hostname configurations, etc.
I've searched online and I cannot seem to find any details specifically with AirPort utility version 6 that goes into detail with these advanced settings.

You mean that blue/black blotch covering the IP address.. so nobody can see it..
As far as I can see.. in a screenshot above of what you posted.. your IPv4 address is black blotch1 with subnet mask of black blotch2 .. it is kind of hard to comment.. probably just xxx out the last digits.. or blotch a couple of digits.. otherwise I haven't a clue what you are looking at.
That is your WAN IP address.. It is completely normal.. I think..
There is only one. Unless your ISP is generous and supplies mulitple IP addresses which you pay a lot of money for now.. then we all get just one public IP.
If you have a cheap and nasty ISP that will give you private IP and nasty things start to happen.. so tell me if the IP is public or private??
The TC also has a LAN IP address.. this is not related to WAN and is set on the TC. The LAN IP must be different to the WAN IP for the TC to route.. different address range. By default TC is 10.0.1.1
It will give a double NAT warning if both IP WAN and LAN are private range. But it will still route. As long as they are different ranges.
Explain what you need.. or why you would get two WAN ip addresses.

Time Capsule DHCP settings

My BT Home Hub 2 started playing up so I replaced it with a Draytek Vigor 120. I have managed (somehow) to get it to work and have internet access despite the Vigor saying that I don't.
The Time Capsule DHCP is assigning IP addresses of 10.0.#.# instead of 192.168.#.# - any ideas how to change this format?

A consumer device with an LED labeled as an essential funtion but is actually redundant? This is why Apple should do their own ADSL modem...
It is not redundant.. The internet LED will light when the draytek is used as router.. it then handles the routing.. but the UK version has removed that option.. this is correct because the internet is not controlled then by the modem.. only dsl sync. The router that does authentication, actually is the internet device..
Apple have never made anything beyond dial up modems and they will never make adsl modems.. which are going to eventually be phased out hopefully as we go to fibre or vdsl.
A bridged modem is not generally accessible from a router.. the WAN port of the router is pppoe encapsulated not normal IP addressing.

I moved from Taiwan to the EU and need to adjust the channels of my Time Capsule 5GHz WLAN to comply with the EU standard?
How can select the different channels. I currently have only 4 channels 149 - 161 available.
I have tried to select the EU region, but it will not offer me this choice.
The spec sheets on both the Taiwanese Apple site and the German Apple site both have the same specs (also US site etc.).
It only sais that in certain countries certain channels are not approved to be used.
I annot see why it should not be possible to select different channels.
Can anybody help?

Time Capsule DNS settings

HI,
I have a Time Capsule as my wireless router. When I set it up I ended up having to manually set my DNS numbers in order to make the connection work- it works fine, but I have to manually enter the DNS number into anyone who visits my house with a computer or iPhone etc. Why is it that I have to manually configure and is there any way to have it just connect after entering the password?

What DNS address is the TC getting from the ISP?? Is it a valid address?
What DNS address is the TC allocating if any? It should simply allocate itself. But if the TC itself doesn't have a valid DNS it cannot resolve name to IP.

Yes.. of course Europe allows 5ghz.. but there is no channel in Taiwan that overlaps with Europe.

Time capsule IP settings / NAT / DHCP / questions

I'm trying to set up a Time Capsule in my apartment, to use as a wireless router with several apple computers. I've been using an Airport Express in the past. I'm having problems setting up the computers to get individual IP addresses, not in conflict with each other, while still receiving the Internet signal.
My DSL comes with a stable IP address which I have assigned to the Capsule, along with associated subnet mask, router address (the router in the building from the service provider, which is working fine), and DNS server addresses.
Trouble is, if I set my capsule to assign IPs through DHCP or share a signal IP, it shows blinking amber on reboot. Strangely, as a bridge, with one computer assigned the same IP I'm able to get the internet, but if I want to use more than one computer, I get an error message about IP duplication. I'm also wondering about double NAT (which I'm not as familiar with). ANother question is whether to plug into the WAN or LAN port. The airport setup seems to want me to use the WAN port (and says that no ethernet plugged in there is a problem). Is it?
Finally, I was wondering if I can use my old airport express to extend my range and/or network a second printer in the other room. Do the two routers need to be connected by an ethernet cable? Can the airport express be remotely set up to use the same network the Time Capsule is plugged into from the wall?

Yes you want the DSL modem plugged into the WAN port.
Does your DSL require PPPoE? If so, after configuring the Time Capsule to get a connection using PPPoE... ensure that you DISABLE PPPoE on each of your computers. Only one device should be handling PPPoE.

Yes as long as you configure the Time Capsule to work in an 802.11g compatible mode AND you configure both the Time Capsule and AirPort Express (AX) to wirelessly connect using WDS.

How to connect to an iMac in a LAN through Time Capsule as router

SITUATION:
We have a Time Capsule at work, which we use as a router for a LAN which includes 2 iMacs, 1 PowerBook G4, and an HP Officejet Printer.
The Time Capsule connects to the internet through Ethernet, via a Static IP address. All the computers connect to the internet wirelessly through the Time Capsule, and the printer is wired to the Time Capsule.
We are trying to connect remotely to the computers in the office, keeping in mind that the Time Capsule as a router is in the middle.
SET-UP WORK DONE SO FAR:
We opened the Airport Utility, selected the Time Capsule, Advanced tab, Port Mapping option and added a device, using the local IP address of the computer we want to make available remotely.
In the Port Mapping Setup Assistant that comes up, we ran three scenarios: (1) left the Service field without a choice once and then (2) with Apple Remote Desktop and (3) Personal File Sharing.
In the first scenario, we chose 49999 as Public and Private TCP Ports (we read the figures could be in an approximate range of 42-65k), while we left the UDP Ports fields blank. In the other two scenarios we left untouched both the UDP and TCP Ports that appear as defaults when the Service field is selected.
We hit the Continue button and the Update button afterwards. The Time Capsule saved the information and restarted.
In the Sharing preference under System Preferences we chose Remote Management and clicked on the Computer Settings... button. We checked the VNC button and included a password.
REMOTE ACCESS WORK:
When we wanted to access the iMac that we just thought we had set up for remote access using a different computer connected to another network, we could not connect.
We used Chicken of the VNC to try to access the local iMac, using the Time Capsule Static IP address and the VNC password set in the Sharing/Remote Management preference in the iMac. We have been unable to access the local computer connected wirelessly to the Time Capsule so far.
We get the following message:
Could not connect to server
Connection timed out: ()
Any help out there?

The TC is not a streaming device.. it is merely a hard disk mounted inside a router.
That means My Receiver.. whatever that happens to be.. has to be a media device that can play from a network file store.. So there is no settings in Airport utility.. because the TC is too dumb to need to know anything.
BTW the TC is a bad place to store files, as it has no way to back itself up.

Time Capsule Not Working With Azureus!

Hi everyone.
I have read every post about this and I am sure I've done everything right, but I STILL cannot pass the NAT/Firewall test on Azureus. I even got an Apple rep to look into it and he worked on it for a week and even he doesn't understand why it isn't working!!! I am running Leopard 10.5.2, and I have a 500 GB Time Capsule. I am using the latest version of Airport Utility and the latest version of Azureus. My ISP is Verizon Fios. Please note that when I was using Airport Extreme with a Powerbook G4 OS 10.4, everything was working swimmingly. The ONLY thing that's changed is that now I'm on Leopard and a Time Capsule. So, Here's a summary of what I've done :
1. In Network Prefs, made sure I am using a manually configured static IP address (10.0.1.201.)
2. In Security prefs, made sure firewall is off.
3. In Airport Utility, made sure I am sharing single IP address using NAT and DHCP.
4. In Port Mapping, checked the NAT enable box and opened these ports: 6881-6889, 49125-65535, and 40156 just for kicks. I've entered these numbers both public and private, both UDP and TCP (filling in all 4 fields, in other words) AND made sure the IP address matched the static one I was using in Network Prefs.
5. Restarted Azureus and my Time Capsule (and even the whole computer, just for good measure).
And guess what? Each and EVERY time, I go back to Azureus, run the NAT/Firewall test using a port I just opened, and am told it failed and that the port is in fact closed. I get the "timed out" error.
***?????? I have been working on this for weeks, literally, and I am totally losing it! Will I never see a green smiley again? Please help!!!!

1. Azureus>Options>Connections>Incoming TCP/UDP listen port:  49125
2. Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility>Time Capsule>Internet>NAT> Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol
3. Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility>Time Capsule>Advanced>Port mapping>
     Public UDP portal: 49125
     Public TCP portal: 49125
    Private IP address: 10.0.1.201
    Private UDP portal: 49125
    Private TCP portal: 49125
4. System Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4: *Using DHCP with Manual Address* (this is choice #2 not #4: Manual)
5. IPv4 address:  10.0.1.201
I think that's all. I fooled around with this for a long time and not everything I did may be necessary but I don't want to mess with success.  Don't know why port 49125 works, but it worked on my Dell computer and Linksys router also. Apple Support was positive I didn't need steps 4 and 5 but 60 seconds later, my smiley faces turned green, and when I tested the port, Azureus message said "+Congratulations, you fixed it."+
The only difference I see, between your settings and mine, is perhaps steps #1 and #4. Hope you get it working. Nothing more frustrating than " little yellow faces".

Time Capsule and Netgear Powerline

I have a 2TB Time capsule and need to extend my network (wired) through HomePlugs. I have had the Netgear Powerline recommended but have noted in the blurb that they are 'not Mac compatible'.
Will they work with my TC and is it simply just a case of plugging them in and they work or is there anything else I need to do settings wise on the TC?
If these will not work can anyone recommend otheres that do and also walk me through the settings I will need to change 9in very simple steps as I am a bit thick ).

Notes:
I first connected the Time Capsule directly to the AirPort Exteme to avoid any powerline networking issues. This allowed both the time capsule and airport extreme to show up in the AirPort Utility program.
Ensure that in the AirPort Extreme's wireless settings, "Allow this network to be extended" is enabled/checked before you modify the Time Capsule's settings; the "allow... extended" checkbox might not be visible if you are not directly connected as a client to the AirPort Extreme (it is not visible after setup when you are a client of the time capsule extender).
The Time Capsule network setup is easiest if you follow the dialogs instead of doing it manually.
I now have cable modem->ABEX->Netgear HomePlug-> Netgear XAV1004 switch-> Time Capsule->extended wireless network->laptop. The powerline adapter signal is running from a new house addition built in 1999 through a sub-panel circuit breaker to a main circuit breaker out through 1940s-era wiring, and everything works perfectly, including Time Machine backups from machines on both sides of the powerline adapters.
@LaPastenague: I haven't detected any ports blocked by my Netgear powerline adapter, nor could I find any port blocking topics via an internet search. I have never installed any of the Netgear management software, so my powerline adapters are not running any encryption... maybe encryption comms cause the issue you raised? I really doubt the Netgear PowerLine adapters block any host-specific ports because the adapters are working at the physical and data-link layers which are below the port assignments in the transport layer of the OSI model.

Time capsule ftp port forwarding

Hi.
Just got a new time capsule and have discovered that the connection speed to my ftp server is MUCH slower.
I've tried playing around with port forwarding but haven't managed to get it sorted out.
I did discover during my attempts that switching the TC over to bridge mode fixed everything. Didn't want that security setup though!
Current setup is modem (bridge mode) > ethernet > time capsule (wirelessly routing via nat-dhcp)
I'm not quite sure what i'm doing with the port forwarding settings...i've tried changing the dhcp mode to manual on my mac
i've also added various ports (21,22,80, 115) to the time capsules' port settings
according to http://www.yougetsignal.com the only open port is 21
any tips?? very grateful!

You need to look carefully at how ftp gets through NAT.. and if the ftp client can open ports itself .. which way are you going, out or in?
Is the client active or passive ftp? You think ftp is this simple protocol but there are variations and some handle NAT better than others.. it is also going to need specific ports opened higher up the range.
Some clients allow you to dictate the port and others open ports at random.

What to do with Time Capsule when not using for Wireless Internet

I previously connected my Time Capsule to my fiber optic router but in my no home this is no longer needed as the cable TV company now provides 160 MPS Internet in a router that contains a wireless router built in. It works fine. My computer is now connected wirelessly to that router (too far to take advantage of the wired connection).
Therefore I want my Time Capsule to just be connected to the computer for backups. I gather I have to connect it via Lan and make sure it does not transmit r receuve wirelessly. In fact, other wireless computers in the huse occasionally try to log into the old Time Capsule PPoE settings, so I want to erase them and start fresh.

By the way, I have a first generation Aiport Express that I hope to use with my new cable router (modem?). I assume it will work as it did with the Time Capsule. Purpose is for Airplay with an audio system.

Ok, this is what I have:
Wall--> Cable modem with wireless (Motorola SURFboard SBG6580J Wireless Cable Modem Gateway.)
Other Room IMAC connected wirelessly to Cable Modem (no Ethenet connection to it since there is no jack and too far to run a cable (permanently--I can do for setup if needed)---> connected to TC and Time Capsule is backing up ok. Time Capsule is also not connected to the Modem

Yes, This is what I am wondering. Do I have to connect it by LAN to the Motorola? A few times, when it was just plugged into the Wall, my Mac airport utility found but them could not connect to my Express. maybe because I did not configure it to work with the Motorola as you say.

Ok, this confirms what I guessed. Connecting the computer to the Expressby Lan? Is that what you mean?
I do understand the second option---connecting the Express to the Motorola.

Super slow wifi with 4th gen Time Capsule

So, I got my 4th gen 3TB Time Capsule yesterday, hooked it up to my main computer (iMac, mid 2010) with ethernet cable, updated the firmware, and let it sit for it's first back up.
Today when I was going to properly set up the wifi at home (two room apartment) it seemed to be going well, iPhone and iPad get decent wifi, it just seems that the wifi range in the apartment isn't as good as with my old junky Belkin router, but it manages. But then I started up a PC running Windows 7 (64-bit) and connected to the wifi network, tried to download something off of Steam and hit about 114kb/s as max download rate (but the average speed is just a couple of kb/s, if even that)... Before I downloaded at about 1-1,5mb/s.
I started Steam through Parallels Desktop on my iMac and tried downloading through there, and had a download rate of about 3mb/s, so I'm blaming it on the wifi.
I fooled around with the Time Capsules wireless settings, 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g/n / b/g and so forth, with only a decrease in performance, the automatic setting works the "best". I tried giving the 5GHz network it's own name but I dunno, I can't find the network with that name through the PC. But still, as I don't get the same consistent wifi cover in my apartment as with the Belkin router, I'm thinking something is generally messed with the Time Capsules wifi, not just the PC.
Any ideas, any solutions? It would be greatly appreciated!

Today I also tried connecting my Playstation 3 to the router, both are in the same room, about 5 meters apart, t'was SLOW And needless to say, with the Belkin router it was much, much faster. For once I'm not blaming Windows on this one.
Also, ran a speedtest app on my iPhone, it was MUCH faster yesterday with the time capsule (though not satisfactory), today it's about 1/10th of yesterdays slow speed...

Time Capsule Disappears When VPNing

I have a question regarding the use of VPNs and the availability of a network (ethernet) connected Time Capsule. I'm using a Time Capsule (3TB from early 2013) that is solely used for Time Machine backups. I have disabled all Time Capsule router settings, and instead rely on my Asus RT-N66U wireless router for all wireless and wired connections - I also have a 10/100/1000 switch for extra ethernet connections (Time Capsule is directly connected to the switch). My MacBook Pro currently uses wi-fi to connect to my local network - I have several network printers and a NAS, and everything works perfectly when I am not VPN'd into my company network.
When I VPN into my company network, the Time Capsule "disappears" from my MacBook Pro's network (evidenced by a "Device Not Found" in the AirPort Utility), however all other network devices are still available and ready (most likely since they've been assigned static IPs within my local network). I have given my Time Capsule a static IP in my network, but it still disappears from my MBP's network. Any Backups planned are delayed and I cannot run the backup manually. However, I can still use the "Enter Time Machine" option to access data from within the Time Capsule. What gives here? Ideally, I'd like to be VPN'd but still have my Time Machine run as planned. What's even stranger is that once I disconnect from the VPN, the Time Capsule still displays "Device Not Found" for quite some time, but eventually comes back to life.
Just for edification purposes, I'm using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN software and have enabled the "All local (LAN) access when using VPN" option. Still no dice. Any thoughts?

Routing is being messed up by the VPN or the DNS is not working properly.. either of which amount to the same thing.
Mount the TC in finder using its IP.
Go, Connect to server.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (or whatever IP you have). The complex bit is you are going to need dhcp reservation on the main router to stop the TC from bouncing around its IP address.
Set that in your Asus main router.. but test it immediately before worrying too much.. if you get it mounted in Finder by IP address.. you can also discover it in Airport utility by using its IP directly..
You simply need to manually control things.. type in the IP to help it out.
Also don't forget the ipv6 setup to link-local only on the wireless/ethernet on the computer..
Tell me how this goes.
Once you have the TC mounted in Finder.. have another go with TM.. if it still has issues.. change the name of the TC, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. see if that helps.
BTW the windows method of fixing this would be simply edit the hosts file..

Of course it is essential that the TC does not change IP.. so fix that in the asus as I said and make sure if you shut down and restart the TC it does actually pick up the IP.. you can also try using static IP on the TC as an alternative to bridge this actually works well but is a little more involved to setup..

If the TC is bridged there is no port forwarding.

Time capsule & airport express settings! HELP!!

Would really appreciate some help. I have been running a time capsule with various devices and all has been going well. However there was an area of the house which the time capsule wifi couldnt reach so I bought an Airport Express to extend the network.
In Airport Utility, the Time Capsule has an error saying "conflicting DCHP range" and an error beside the Airport Express saying "Device not found." Ironically both devices are working (at the minute).
This is drivng me mental, if somebody could let me know what settings the two devices should be on regarding, DHCP, NAT and Bridge mode I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
