Time capsule Archive function

I use time capsule to store media. I learned about the archive function to backup time capsule itself on a USB drive. I did it but took several hours...
On subsequent archives will it just add the new material or will it start from the begining and take just as long... I plan to do it every 2 weeks or a month.
Also, is there a way of automating this process, just like time machine does?

Does the 2013 Time Capsule support Airport Utility v5.6?
Not reliably.
I am asking because I want to use the "ARCHIVE" button that is missing from the new utility.
You may have missed it, but the latest version of AirPort Utility 6.3.1....which you should already have if you have been updating your Mac......does include the "Archive Disk" option.
And on that same subject, does ARCHIVE function even work on the 2013 time capsule or has that been changed with the new hardware?
It works.
I am wondering if an external USB drive connected to the 2013 time capsule has better/worse USB data transfer perfromance compared to the older generations
The performance is the same as with older versions.
The external USB drive on my 3rd gen Time Capsule was super slow compared to its internal drive.

  • Restoring entire disk from Time Capsule archive?

I've archived my Time Capsule to an external drive. Is it possible to restore an entire disk from the archive? On a more general note, just what good is the archive if one can't use Time Machine with the external archive disk mounted on a Mac?

It should be. Connect it directly to your Mac, and see #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
On a more general note, just what good is the archive
If your TC is too small to back up your Mac, you can use the "archive" function to move the backups to a larger drive, then back up to it through the Time Capsule, instead of to the TC's internal HD.
Or, if you're using the internal HD for other data, it's a good way to back it up, since Time Machine can't.

  • My time capsule still functions as a wireless base station but I am now unable to find my back-up disc. find

My current time capsule 1T still works as a wireless base station to connect my remote computer to the internet yet I can't bring up my Time Capsule hard disc. I keep getting this message when I try to back up and I am unable to retrieve my backup disc storage. Is it possible for this unit to fail from the back-up disc standpoint yet the WL function continues to operate. This is the 2nd failure that I have had w/ a Time Capsule.
         Jim

The TC hard disk can fail.. they become generally unreliable at 3years but many fail well before that. If you have applecare on any computer and TC less than 3years old, check if apple might not replace it .. again.
I am not clear what the message is when the connection fails.
    Need more info.. exact error..
Does the smart test show errors in the TC for the hard disk?
What model and size hard disk is it exactly? The A model number from the base will help.
Have you reset the TC or even just rebooted it and the network.
Some apple updates are rather less than satisfactory and I have found my TM target disk offline for the first time yesterday.. for no good reason.. a simple reboot got it restarted and the Mac able to detect it again.

  • Time Capsule Archives

I soon will be purchasing an external hard drive, I also have a 1 TB Time Capsule. I'm concerned about the reliability of the Time Capsule hard drive. I was wandering is there a way I could do a clone and then an incrementtal backups once a week or month of the Time Machine .sparsebundle files, as a way of archiving? So if something should happen to my Time Capsule, that once I have it repaired or replaced with a new one, as a fail safe method, that I could copy the .sparsebundle file right back into the Time Capsule device, and could continue where I left off?
    Thanks!

The built in archive is a full disk.. no incremental.. if you want incremental you can do it.. you simply use a backup software on the computer.. (but not TM which cannot read network drives).. mount the sparsebundle and back it up.. It is far better to do this of course with the hard drive plugged into the computer otherwise you are copying files from the TC to computer.. then back to the TC and to the super slow USB port..
BUT let me suggest there is a better way .. Just do the occasional TM backup to the usb drive plugged into your computer. You simply pick the external drive as the target and it will do the backup. Then you can swap TM back to using the TC.. each time you want an incremental backup.. just redirect TM to the USB drive..
Advantage.. you now have two independent backups.. so if a corruption crept into the sparsebundle on the TC it is not simply reflected in the backup..
You can also use a different software like ccc or superduper and create a proper disk image.. for recovery this is 1000% easier than TM. and about that much faster.

  • Time Capsule Share Function?

is there a network share function; can I use a browser via the internet to access the time capsule on my home network?

The only share function is AFP and SMB.. there is nothing else.. no http, https, ftp dlcp or anything else that could possibly be useful. Time Capsule is a backup device for Time Machine.

  • Time Capsule archive/HD problem

I have just purchased an Iomega 2TB external HD to use for archiving my Time Capsule. However, when I connect it to the Time Capsule, Airport Utility tells me there's a disk problem with the external HD.
When I reconnect it to my Mac and run Disk Utility, it tells me the HD is fine (and, indeed, it seems to work fine too). Even if I erase and reformat the external HD (Mac OS extended/journaled), the same problem reoccurs when I connect it to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
    Ideas?

Problem solved.. I had to reformat the disk again with the partitions set to 1, not "current"

  • Can time capsule also function as a second drive for my computer wirelessly?

Can I use my time capsule as a second hard drive for my computer if I am running out of space on my current drive?  For example - could I have my iphoto library reside on the time capsule and be mapped directly when I log into iphoto?

Definitely not recommended. Simply stated, I would never do this.
Access to the Time Capsule drive is slow, and if there are any errors when iPhoto is writing to the Time Capsule drive, the entire iPhoto library can easily become corrupted.
This assumes that you are connecting the Time Capsule to your Mac using a wired Ethernet connection. The potential for problems would be greatly magnified if the Mac was using wireless.
Another point to consider....the only copy of the iPhoto library that you have will be on the Time Capsule. When....not if...the Time Capsule has a problem, you will lose the iPhoto library unless you have a backup on another drive.
The correct way to do what you want is add an exernal drive and connect it directly to the Mac using USB or better yet, Firewire.  Move the iPhoto library over to the external drive.
Then....the Time Capsule will backup both your Mac and the external hard drive.  In case something goes wrong with the external drive, or the Time Capsule, you still have a backup copy of the iPhoto library.
For confirmation of all of this, please post in the iPhoto support forum.

  • Time Capsule Archive very slow... or stuck

I put my TC to archive yesterday to a USB 2T iomega drive... all initial steps went well but later on the next day the TC is still with an amber light and nothing has happened, is this normal, should it take so long... I had about 450 GB of information in the TC so I don't know it this is a lot or not.
Also, is there anyway to know the progress of this archive?
    thank you,
    eric

    Nope that is not normal.
The SOLID AMBER light means that the operating system on the TC is loading... so it's not actually even running when you see that.
Try again - and when you start the Time Machine backup - you should have the time machine indicator up on the finder bar is OSX that spins when it is backing up - click on that - it will give you a real-time progress of the backup.

  • Time capsule doesn't see printer through USB hub

I can't seem to get the TC to see my USB printer if it connects through a hub.  I have an external drive plugged into the hub and I can plug it into any of the ports and the TC log file shows the disk plug in and unplug.  The disk works great.
So far, the only way I've been able to print via the TC, is to connect the USB cable direct to the TC.  But there's no indication in the AirPort utility that the printer even exists.  Using System Preferences printer setup, I'm able to see the printer, add it and print a test page.  At no time did the AirPort utility indicate that the printer was indeed attached to the Time Capsule and functioning correctly.
How do I get the AirPort to give me more log information?  I can't believe that I'm able to print via the TC, yet the printers pane is empty, and nothing in the system log.
After doing this test, I again tried using the hub, and the printer is no longer visible on the Mac, but the disk on the hub is there.  I unplug the hub and plug the printer direct, and it's again visible on the Mac.  At no time does the TC indicate that the printer exists.
I do Linux system admin all day and bought a mac because it runs Unix for command line, and is supposed to be a "no brainer" to manage - a big plus as I really don't want to bring my work home and just use the computer.  Sigh....
    Macbook is running 10.7.2
Time Capsule is a new 2T unit
    Printer is Canon iP4300

The thing that really bothers me is that when I connect the printer direct to the TC, the Mac sees it, but not the Time Capsule...  ***?!?
Resetting the print system may...or may not....help here.
See the last step in this Apple Support Document

You are power cycling the entire network after you make a change in the USB connections, correct?
A powered USB hub will run $15-20 or so. Highly recommended.

  • Using Time Capsule to store Files

Can I partition Time Capsule to use like a hardrive to store files such as photos and media, or does Time Capsule just function as a backup drive?

How would I go about this?
Once the connection to the Time Capsule is established, look for its icon in the My Computer window and use it as if it was a regular drive. You may need to use the AirPort software for it to show up; this is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder.

  • Time Capsule   Airport Extreme   Airport Express - IP Address Issues, Internet dropping...

I have a brand new Time Capsule 3TB functioning as my main wireless router from a Motorola SB6141 Cable Internet Modem.  I have a Airport Extreme and Airport Express extending the network from my Time Capsule 3TB.  After the intial setup there were no connection issues for several days.  However, yesterday I began to experience issues where the Time Capsule starting telling me that other devices on the network were trying to assign IP Addresses to change from DHCPand NAT to Bridge Mode.  What is the best solution for this?  My temporary solution is just to do a hard reset of the SB6141 which seems to alleviate the issue until the next day.  Please help!

There is definitely some issues with the SB6141 modem and the new AC version Extreme and TC.
I have recommended to several people to use a crossover cable or a small 10/100 switch.
Either is a very cheap item and I cannot promise a solution but it has helped.
Net time it happens please login with airport utility and take a few screenshots of the TC summary page and internet tab and post them here.

  • Hard Drive size seems to include Files on time capsule

I recently used Whatsize to measure my hard drive space. I was surprised to see it includes some files i have copied to my time capsule as a backup. This measurement is the same with the about this mac hard drive measurement. Is it usual for these files to be included?

Yes, it should be OK to delete the folder - even if it contains some stuff that never got to the real Time Capsule, they should just be backup files for what should still be on the source drive. Just for added safety, though, don't empty the Trash for a while, until you know that the Time Capsule is functioning properly and you again have two copes of all your stuff.
There may be an additional issue accessing the Time Capsule after you do delete that folder. I'm not familiar with network drives, but in the case of local drives the presence of a ghost folder can cause the real external drive to mount on a path containing an extra number in the volume name. In other words, now, with wi-fi back on, the current paths in the file system might be:
    /Volumes/timecapsule/ - the ghost folder
    /Vollumes/timecapsule 1/ - the real Time Capsule
when you delete the ghost folder and restart, the Time Capsule will now be able to mount "normally",
    /Volumes/timecapsule
It's possible, though, that Time Machine and Deja Vue will still be looking for their backup targets at /Volumes/timecapsule 1/, a path which no longer exists, and will thus be unable to find the files on their previous backups. You could probably check for this in Time Machine just by entering it. If this does happen, I think you could probably recover just by re-choosing the target disk in Time Machine and in Deja Vu, but I don't really know the inner workings of Time Machine.
Again, this may not be an issue at all, but it's something to be aware of.

  • Hard drive networked through Time Capsule for Windows and Mac

My previous setup was using an old Dell laptop with Windows XP to network share both my Samsung laser printer and my Seagate GoFlex 2 tb drive formated to NTFS, and all Windows 7, Windows 8, and OS X 10.6+ machines in the house were successfully able to connect to both. My wife replaced her old Macbook Pro she got in 2008 and decided to get a Time Capsule as well to backup her iMac and new Macbook Air. I decided to take advantage of the "features" of the Time Capsule, and hubbed the single port, just as I had done with the old Dell. After installing Bonjour on the Windows 7 machines I was able to share the printer just fine, however I'm still unable to share the drive for some reason.
The Airport utility on both the Macs and Win 7 machines see the hard drive in utilities, the box in Airport for file sharing is checked, guest access turned off, secure disk sharing with device password, and workgroup matches my workgroup. However the hard drive still doesn't appear. I tried formatting it to FAT32 based on some older forums posted in 2008-2009 range, but then realized the hard drive is too large for that, and I'm not looking to have a bunch of smaller partitions. I tried exFAT, but that failed too. Now I'm back to NTFS, but still with the issue that none of the machines recognize hard drive via the Explorer/Finder.
The Time Capsule is functioning as a backup with Time Machine for her Mac's, but I'm looking to use the external drive connected more as a media center storage and storing selected individual files (think networked thumb drive/USB stick) from my machines.

Put the seagate drive onto the Mac and format it Mac OS extended journaled. (HFS+ for short) and you will also need to change the partition over to GUID from MBR.
TC has very limited formats it can recognise.. FAT32 and HFS+ (well FAT16 but that doesn't count). exfat no, ntfs no, Really with FAT32 being hopeless.. you have one choice .. HFS+.
The Windows machines can handle files to the drive just fine.. because it is a network drive.. it is offered to the network as SMB protocol.. in windows it will look like NT server. The precise format of the drive is irrelevant and is handled by the firmware of the TC.
But do reset the partition scheme to GUID.. not MBR.

You can even put 2 or more partitions on it.. but only one is fine.

  • Best way to extend wireless via airport express and time capsule

best way to extend wireless via airport express and time capsule
i live in a two storey house where i use my airport express to create a wireless network in the main floor, and time capsule to extend it in the upper floor, where my room is. i have like 16 mbps in the main floor, and 2-3 mbps in the upper floor after having speediest.
i used time capsule in the upper floor because i use wireless backup daily and don't want to put internet down while i im doin it and consequently my parent can have internet access in the main floor, am i right? or do i have make just the opposite in order to have a good internet speed?
secondly, while checking airport express wireless mode on airport utility, there is like 4 different type of radio mode(802 11n bg comp, 802 11n 2.4, 802 11n a comp, 802 11n 5ghz) which i have no idea what they mean
    what do you recommend?
we have like iphone4, iphone 3g, mbookpro, ipad, ipad 2, samsung tv and a sony vaio laptop in the wireless network
    thank you

What you have would appear to be working but I can comment how I would redefine your setup.  Note that both Airport Express and Time Capsule can function as wireless base stations so you do have wireless everywhere and at all times — using the Time Capsules for backups doesn’t mean your parents won’t have internet access regardless of the where the base stations are located.
You appear to have devices to connect to your network that use the 2.4 GHz band with 802.11g such as the iPhone 3G and perhaps the 5 GHz band with 802.11n such as likely the Macbook Pro if it’s a recent model.  The iPhone 4 can use 5 GHz and 802.11n.  Can’t comment on the Sony and Samsung but you can check their specs.
Now the Time Capsule (if it’s a recent version), can simultaneously supply 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band signals, but the Airport Express (if it’s recent) can only use one of those bands at one time.  Likely the lowest common denominator for your devices is going to be the 2.4 GHz band since the devices that are capable of using 5 GHZ also support 2.4 GHz.  If you don’t use 5 GHz, you won’t lose much in a two-storey home because likely it’s the 2.4 GHz band is better signal anyway because 5 GHz signals drop off quickly with several walls/floors to penetrate.
You also didn’t mention if the Airport Express is used to support a printer and/or AirPlay (using iTunes to play on remote speakers via the Airport Express connection) but that might also be a factor in the best location to place the Airport Express.  Although the printer could be switched between the Time Capsule and the Airport Express if needed, only the Airport Express will support your remote speakers.
Recommend you use the Time Capsule as the Base station.  When using Airport Utility to define the network, after you name your network, etc., select the Wireless tab, check the box “Allow this network to be extended” and set the Radio Mode to "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)”.
Using the Airport Utility, click on the Airport Express; after you define the device and network name, select the Wireless tab, define the Wireless Mode as “Extend a Wireless Network” and check the box “Allow wireless clients”.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can I just add Time Capsule to my AEBS Wi-Fi network without making it the main connection to my Internet modem?

Reason I ask: I have an AirPort Extreme that works great. I only want to use the Time Capsule to back up my wife's Macbook wirelessly. I don't want to go through the daylong hassle of trying to set up the Time Capsule as my base station and have to track down obscure networking data (by calling an AT&T tech person in the Philippines) and printer info and TCP/IP digits, MAC addresses, MAP vs. POP info, etc. etc.
So, can I just plug in the Time Capsule and "add" it to my current Wi-Fi arrangement? Then just open my wife's Macbook and choose the device on the network to back up to?
Thanks in advance for any tips. -- steven

So, can I just plug in the Time Capsule and "add" it to my current Wi-Fi arrangement?
Yes, you have the option to configure the Time Capsule to "join" your current wireless network, so backups will occur over wireless only. In this type of configuration, the Time Capsule really functions only as a wireless hard drive. It performs no routing functions at all.
One of the advantages of doing it this way is that the Time Capsule can be located wherever you want.....as long as it can receive a strong wireless signal from your main wireless router, of course.
