Time Capsule DNS problem - Complete wipe?

Hi!
I am having a strange DNS problem with my time capsule (4th gen).
With one particular site it doesn't load the start page but random pages of the same domain with always the same pictures.
Setup is following:
Cisco EPC3208 cable modem connected to the time capsule via cable
Troubleshooting so far:
MacBook connected directly to the modem loads the start page of the website -> So it must be a problem with the time capsule
MacBook connected to time capsule via wireless loads the wrong page
MacBook connected to time capsule via cable loads the wrong page
iPhone connected to time capsule loads the wrong page
Rebooting the time capsule did not solve the problem
Uploading the latest firmware again did not solve the problem
Doing a hard reset and importing the previous settings did not solve the problem
Doing a factory reset and setting up time capsule as new device did not solve the problem
Changing the DNS servers from the providers to Google's DNS or to OpenDNS had no change
My thought is that there might be something stuck in the DNS cache of the time capsule. I am quite sure that completely wiping the settings should resolve it. Unfortunately the hard reset did not help nor the factory reset.
Any help is appreciated! I really need that page to my daily work!

We have been hitting this a bit.. I was only in the last couple of days posting in another thread.. do a traceroute from your computer to the site. Do it with TC and without TC.. if it routes wrongly or cannot find the site via the TC, something is wrong.. but I am lost as to what. It isn't dns.. it isn't dns cache.. you can simply use dns on your computer and that would totally bypass the TC. The routing is messed up.. that looks like a different issue. MTU??
Something weird.. but if you cannot find a work around.. the answer is obvious.. replace the TC as the main router.. you can bridge it and use it for backups and wireless. But there is some serious issues going on and the TC frankly is doing poorly.
A decent router is available for $100 or so.. my favourite right now.. Netgear WNDR3800 because it runs decent linux third party firmware like openwrt and gargoyle. These stand head and shoulders above the average firmware in a common garden routers.

I want to set up my time capsule on a completely new network & location without losing the old backups. How do I do this? I cannot find anything in the user manual.

The TC is very hard to just move.. it retains too much of the old network setup.. buried deep in the bowels of the firmware configuration files.. or even on the hard disk special partitions used by the TC.. invisible to you btw.. !!
Do a factory reset and setup from scratch.
That factory reset will have no affect on your backups.. even if you rename the TC.. not a bad things since you also want clients to respond to the new network.. simply reset TM to the new TC name and location.
    See A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Factory reset.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    Factory reset Gen 5
Hold in reset for about 5sec until the status light flashes quickly.
If your AirPort Time Capsule still doesn’t respond, do a similar reset to the Gen1-4.
Unplug your AirPort Time Capsule .. hold in reset and power the TC back on.. without releasing the reset.. wait until status led flashes rapidly.

Reset your login password using your Apple ID
Before you can use your Apple ID to reset your login password, make sure that FileVault isn’t enabled on your computer.
Also make sure that an Apple ID is associated with your user account, and that an administrator has given you permission to reset your own password using an Apple ID. For more information, see this help topic:
Associate Apple IDs with your user account
Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.

  • My time capsule isn't completing backup

    Hi
My time capsule doesn't complete back-up with Imac. Stopped working about 2 days ago - gets about 70% of the way through then I receive a message stating backup incomplete. Everything else is working fine. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Do a verify of the backup by ethernet.
    A5 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If you are using wireless, do at least the verify and the next backup in full isolation by ethernet.
Then you might need to sort out wireless issues.

  • Time Capsule can't complete backup

I have been using a Time Capsule to hold files for multiple computers in my office to access. The Time Capsule randomly one day stopped backing up and I am now getting this error: "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "TimeCapsule". The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/MyMac.sparsebundle" could not be created (error (null))."
I have tried the tutorials on http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html (renaming everything like it says for this error, deleting the .plist file, etc) but nothing has fixed my problem.
I am also having a strange issue where files that were created and saved to the Time Capsule while backups haven't been working (Since the end of August supposedly) will flicker in their folder and appear as a blank paper icon. They were working yesterday perfectly fine, but now it tells me "Application cannot be found" if I am quick enough to click on them before they disappear again.

Ok.. this is where you need to make a decision.. do you wipe and start over.. or do you try just a delete of the old backup and see if the Mac and start over doing a backup.
This is not an unusual problem.. So let me just run through the list to make sure you have everything as right as possible.. if none of it works you really have no choice but to wipe and start over.
    1. Factory reset the TC and do the setup again. (sorry if you have already done this.. but it is standard procedure when the thing corrupts itself).
No files are lost doing this. BUT Apple now says you should use names, less than 27 characters, no spaces. Pondini is more explicit.. 25 characters no spaces pure alphanumeric. I will be even more specific.. since Mavericks is using SMB networking by default. Use names that are really short.. max 20 characters.. less than 10 even better. So TCgenx as base station name. X being actual Gen of the TC.. wireless name, TCwifi. Keep the wireless password to 10-20 character pure alphanumeric mix of case and numbers.
    2. IPv6 is now essential and should be set to link-local only in the computer.. whether wireless or ethernet set both if used to that setting.. eg wireless.
    3. Manually mount the TC in the computer using Finder, Go/Connect to Server.
AFP://TCgenx.local (replace with the name you used.. local is default domain you cannot really change so it should be correct).
    or
AFP://10.0.1.1 (If the TC is setup as router or with static IP.. which is always better btw, even if the TC is bridged, then use IP address.. it fixes the name problem).
The disk will be discovered and you will be asked for the disk password.. apply that and don't forget to save in the keychain.
    4. Redo the setup of the TM.. using the new TC name as the target. Don't worry if it says it is going to create a new backup, once it starts and finds the backup it will do a normal incremental.
    5. No luck with the above.. do a verify of the backup (A5 in Pondini troubleshooting).
    6. Still no luck.. wipe the backup for your computer and start over with a new backup.
    Q12 here http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
But if you are backing up several computers make sure you delete the right sparsebundle.
When you do a clean fresh backup .. use ethernet.. wireless off.. this ensures the first backup at least is as good as possible. Wireless is dodgy.
None of this will totally guarantee success.. but it has good chance.. if it fails.. as with Mavericks TM is not wholly reliable. I recommend you buy Carbon Copy Cloner.. and USB drive and plug it into your computer and make a bootable clone. Once you have seen bootable clones in operation.. ie the internal disk dies.. plug in the USB and select it as boot drive.. and you are back to whenever the backup was done.. you will consider TM great for incremental backups and stick to clones for getting operational again.

  • DNS Issues with Time Capsule - DNS Proxy periodically dies

hi all .... looking for some suggestions
I have a time capsule 1TB, connected to a linksys adsl modem in bridge mode, with the TC acting as DHCP server for my local clients. In the PPPoE settings I also enter the primary and secondary addresses for DNS that my ISP supplied.
I am able to successfully connect to the internet, and all clients successfully pick up an IP address, and each client picks up the TC as the DNS proxy. Everything works perfectly as it should.
Usually once per day, there seems to be a slight hickup with the internet connection (hard to tell whether I am losing the PPPoE or some other issue). When this happens, the PPPoE connection remains active, as I am able to access anything on the internet from an IP level. However, the DNS proxy service on the TC seems to die and as a result, all internet browsing fails. If I reboot the TC, everything comes back to normal. If I dont reboot, the only way to get browsing working is to manually enter the DNS IP address from ISP into the client PCs. However, this is a manual fix that I should not have to perform.
Looking for advice and guidance. Seems like a bug but I cant tell. If I was able to set the DHCP server to pass out the ISP supplied addresses that would also work, but I cant.

Just got off the phone with support for this very same problem. DNS Proxy is definitely dying in the TC, looks like a firmware issue to me.
This is the 3rd TC I'm on. First was a 500GB, had this problem, replaced it under warranty at Apple's direction, replacement did the same, just upgraded this weekend to 1GB, and same issue still. All on 7.3.2 firmware.
TC 1TB, PPPoE to my ISP, ISP's DNS Servers listed in the PPPoE config in the TC.
When a host gets DHCP from the TC the only DNS returned is the TC itself, since it proxies the ISP DNS servers.
Once every day or two, the DNS proxy dies. local network works, and I can add my ISP's DNS addresses in my host config and I have DNS again, but this is definitely something dying in the DNS proxy in the TC.
Just for kicks trying to switch from my ISP's DNS servers to OpenDNS now since someone said that worked for them, but I am not hopeful... I don't see this as a host DNS issues at all.
The dead proxy is very clear:
    $ nslookup apple.com. 192.168.1.1 # that's the TC
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
    ** server can't find apple.com: SERVFAIL
    $ nslookup apple.com. 208.67.222.222 # that's OpenDNS
    Server: 208.67.222.222
    Address: 208.67.222.222#53
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: apple.com
    Address: 17.149.160.49
I replaced a linksys router with the TC and am kind of unhappy that a $500 router dies every couple of days. My cheapo Linksys router never needed to be restarted, it only ever got rebooted once every year or so when the house lost power long enough for the UPS to run out of battery.
Help us out here Apple, I replaced a $50 router with a $500 because I like the flavor of your kool aid, and this thing dies every day or two. Even if you can't fix why the proxy is dying every couple of days, can you please at least update the firmware to maybe restart the proxy if it quits working?

  • New Time Capsule 2TB problem

    Hello,
I decided to get a Time Capsule (newest tower version). I ran the back up wirelessly and successfully, as to say that it went through the the initial backup overnight and completed it uninterrupted. The next morning, I entered time machine and saw the backup like normal. I then decided to test it out and deleted a few PDF files from my "documents" folder, emptied trash and then ran another backup. When running new back up, it was "backing up" an additional 1.8 GB, (I was surprised it would have that much to back up.)
Upon on completion of second backup, I decided to go back in TM to the initial backup to attemp to restore the deleted PDFs. When going back to the old "documents" folder that was initially backed up, the folder didn't have the deleted files, reflecting the "current" state of the folder, not the state from the initial backup done hours earlier.. Then when I tried to switch to another folder, like "movies" the TM started getting slow and unresponsive! unable to show the files. This is the 2nd Time Capsule I have tried and had the same problem with both. I feel like there is something wrong with what I am doing, however I have used TM on on a wired hard drive in the past with no problems. Any help in pointing out something I'm doing wrong or steps to ensure the go are set up correctly is appreciated.
the firmware is up to date as is the Macbook Software. Using a mid 2014 MBP retina with Yosemite.
    THanks!

tthanks Bob. That makes sense if I'm following you correctly. The wireless "backup" process, where TM says "preparing back up" then says something like "30.5 GB out of 200BG backed up" , then finally "back-up complete" took about 5-7 hrs wirelessly but then completely finished.
IF I'm understanding you right, it may take a few days after the "backup complete" message for the TC disk to be fully catalogued wirelessly before specific file details are ready to be utilized for normal TM operation?
    am I getting this right?
    THanks!!

  • Time Capsule Backup Problem (frist time)

    Hi,
    Background information,
I am using a 32 day old 2TB Time Capsule, The Computer I am using is a white Macbook early 2009 - 120 gb HD and i have USED 80 out of 120 -  , it is connected via wifi to a ADSL +2. The Time Capsule I am running is connected directly via the modern to the TC using a ethernet cable. I have the latest version if OS X Lion and the latest update and firmware of TC. I am backing up directly to the TC’s drive.
    The Problem,
A couple of days ago i started to do my first backup of my Macbook, I started at 8 am in the mourning in which it took till 10pm at night using wifi, i am un-bale to use ethernet cable... However this backup did not fully complete and at around 4pm that same day when I was trying to backup It said it had only "5 seconds left" until it started to increase the amount of data that the TC had to backup. It got to 10pm and fail the first backup with an error message, which I do no have, I think it is something to do with the disk being disconnected. So I tried again the next day, when it started the gage said it only had to backup initially 250mb, which i would assume this means it's completed it's first backup, as the day progressed it still was backing up, and was presenting the same issues as before, that is it said it "only had 5 seconds left", however once again it began showing that it had to backup more data, at the end of the day it had to back up 6.5 gb which it did but hadn't fully finished.
A quick side note: I have been able to successfully make a backup on a early 2010 iMac.

The first Time Machine backup of a Mac will always involve transferring a lot of data.  Over Wi-Fi that means it will take a long time.  I'm not sure why you say you're unable to use an Ethernet cable, but I recommend that you use one for that first backup.  Connect it just before you go to bed, turn off Wi-Fi to assure that it's really using the Ethernet connection, and start the backup.  It should be complete by the time you get up.  At that point you can disconnect the Ethernet cable, turn Wi-Fi back on, and do all future Time Machine backups over Wi-Fi.

  • Time Capsule DNS error

I can connect to the Time Capsule via Mac Mini via wifi with no problems, however when I try to connect with any other devices it stalls at "obtaining IP address".
The Time Capsule has two yellow status messages
    1. Internet Connection
    2. No DNS servers

I resolved this by setting the router to DNS and NAT in the internet options and rebooting all devices.

  • Airport Time Capsule Shutdown problem

My 3TB 2014 Airport Time Capsule shuts down by itself approx once a week :Green light out with no wi-fi signal.  Need to unplug and reconnect power to restart system.  System has plenty of air flow, fan works and capsule body is cool.
Want to find out what is the cause and solution to prevent this repetitive shutdown problem.
    Thanks
    Dunkin888

This shutdown problem does not seem to apply to the Airport Extreme which does not have the Harddrive,
    Yes, it does.
Re: My Airport Extreme intermittently shuts down completely.
Search here is now a hopeless failure but we do see the complaint fairly often.
And the same thing happens.. people return them and come back with the same problem.
There was some discussion as to the Airports being ultra sensitive to spikes.. or power dips.. so using it on a UPS was one recommendation..
I have found btw that the power supply design for universal, often works better in our part of the world on 240v than on 110v. If you happen to have an 110v to 240v transformer handy or cheaply available have a go running it on 240v. There are various methods used to handle 110v but voltage doubler on the primary circuit is one of the main ways it is done. That is a lot more susceptible to power spikes and dips than standard full wave rectifier.
In the end though.. power supply really should not shutdown.. AFAIK there is no soft off on them .. so for the power supply to shut down completely means it is in protection mode..
If you wanted to open and replace the supply with external 12v supply you probably can.. but so far nobody has trusted me with one.. and I think they are too issue prone to go buy one for myself to do experiments... although I am always keeping my eyes open for the dead ones.
    See the teardown in
    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/AirPort+Time+Capsule+A1470+%28Mini%21%29+Teardow n/15067
Then look at the link to the airport extreme.. they are identical except for the drive.. ie Apple has same power supply in both.. since it is under so much less load in the airport extreme yet they still have the problem I suspect it is fundamental design flaw in the supply.

  • Is Time Machine or Time Capsule the problem?

I have spent more time troubleshooting Time Machine than any other part of my iMac (and I have switched from PC, so it is kinda frustrating). I wonder if anyone relates to this:
    1. From the beginning, Time Capsule backs up incredibly slowly (about 1MB per hour), then falters halfway and gives up.
    2. After serious troubleshooting I return the hardware (ie the Time Capsule itself) to the Apple Store in London - they give me a new one.
    3. IT WORKS PERFECTLY Which suggests to me, given what I've seen on these posts, that there may be a hardware problem on a batch of Time Capsules which no amount of troubleshooting will sort.
But, 4. After three months of perfect working it gives me an error message: "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occured while copying files to the backup volume." This I now get every single backup. I try the most popular fix (trashing the last, "hollow" backup file from the volume) but that doesn't work. Nor does the classic switch on/off, restart, etc. I simply refuse to reformat the hard drive, because I would lose all my backups.
    5. So now I go about life with Time Machine switched off and hope I never need it. That seems to me to be the best fix but if there's any other I'd love to hear.

Based on my experience with TM drives connected directly to a computer, TC, and drives connected to a base station, the issue isn't TM alone. It is when you add networking to the equation when trouble starts. I gave up entirely on using an air drive with TM and now use ChronoSync to back up my data via WiFi daily and connect the drive directly to my notebook once a month to use SuperDuper! My wife is using a TC at work and has experienced the same problems you talk about. At this time she is persevering but she's excluded all directories but her home directory and like me now backs up to a dedicated drive monthly. She's had to format the TC twice but since limiting the backup to a small subset and making sure she doesn't interrupt an update she's not reported any problems.
I wish I had some answers for you and I hope Apple has some answers in 10.6 if not sooner.

  • Time capsule will not complete initial back up and freezes

My Time Machine says back up has completed say '342.43GB of 342.43GB a few seconds remaining'  and just stay on that, which never completes the back up because it has no record of it being backed up. I have 2 Macbooks a 3 year old Black Macbook, and a 2011 Macbook Pro, I've never had a problem in the past backing both up
    Please help?!
    Regards
    Clint

Give it a good long time to complete.  But if it doesn't, cancel the backup (if it won't cancel after a few minues, see #D6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting).
There may be a directory problem on the Mac. Verify it's internal HD, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.
Connect to the TC via Ethernet cable if at all possible.  It's 2-3 times faster, and more reliable, than even a good WIFI connection.
If you've done this several times, delete the sparse bundle for that Mac, per #Q5 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
    Then try the backup again.

  • Time Capsule wifi problem

So I consider myself pretty saavy with this stuff, but right now even I am at a loss.
Moved to Utah and had to sign up with Comcast for internet.  They shipped me a modem and I hooked my 1st Gen Time Capsule up to it and with some wifi issues, I got it to work.  The issues were the typical ones where my Mac and iOS devices couldnt see the wifi broadcast by the TC.
Anyway, I didn't want to pay the rental fee so I picked up a Motorola SB5101.  I plugged in the modem to the wall, the TC to the modem, and hardwired the Mac to the TC.  When I look in the Airport Utility, it shows Internet and Time Capsule.  Internet is green and has a valid IP/DNS.  The TC is orange and compains of no DNS even though it shows one.  I've also tried to use the OpenDNS and Google DNS addys to no avail.  If I am hard wired to the TC, I can recieve internet just fine.  If I try to connect with wifi on any device(mac, ipad, iphone, etc.) it never finishes trying to connect.  It is odd though, because on my iphone when I back out of the wifi options, it shows the name of the router as though its connected, but never displays the wifi icon in place of the ATT 4G icons.  I can also successfully use the iOS airport utility to look at the router settings.
When I am wired to the Time Capsule, my mac has internet access.  When I look in Airport Utility, Internet is green and TC is orange with a no DNS error.  I cant complete a connection to wifi, but it seems to be partially connected.
Any ideas guys?  I've done all the power cycles.  I have reset my PRAM.  I have reset the network settings on my iPhone.  I even did a total reset on the TC and ran through setup again.
The only thing that I can think of is that the modem is assigned both ipv4 and ipv6 IP/DNS addresses.  I have my TC setup in Tunnel mode and have tried both ipv6 Native and the other type.  No luck.

  • HP LaserJet CP1025 and Time Capsule printing problem

Hello. I'm experiencing a problem with network printing with using HP LaserJet CP1025 plugged through USB into a Time Capsule. The problem persists for a long time already. Every time I need to print, I need to reboot my Time Capsule because there is an error in the printing queue, Mac OS X shows a message about some "USB write error", Windows just shows an "error". The only solution to this was rebooting the Time Capsule as told on Apple Support, with unplugging it first, then rebooting the printer, then plugging the Time Capsule. Now even this way doesn't work. This problem is the same on three different computers running Mac OS X Lion, Mountain Lion and Windows 8, so it's not driver problem, however, Bonjour doesn't allow me to use drivers from the printer CD on Windows so I had to install "universal" drivers which allowed me to print. I update the firmware on the Time Capsule from time to time, so it won't help either.  It's extremely annoying to mess around with Time Capsule for half an hour each time I need to print, so I ask for assistance. Thanks to everyone who can help!

There is probably a whole bunch of different issues happening here.
Lion and ML have just as much problem with losing connection to the TC as the windows computer will.
I suggest you do a factory reset of the TC..
You then need to set it up as a straight SMB (windows networking) device.
All network names must be SMB compatible. Short, no spaces.. no apostrophe for sure. pure alphanumeric.
That includes TC name, wireless name/s, passwords of course. and even the hard disk name.
In the file sharing page I would also turn on the guest access and set the WORKGROUP. Although that is more for disk sharing they should also help print sharing.
The printer name, I am not sure.. but you want that as simple as possible as well and following the above rules.
I am not at all sure the latest firmware is the panacea to all ills.. in fact I tend to run any TC i have on 7.5.2 and find it works better. Especially the older ones.
If it still doesn't work, it is a case of buy a new network printer.. when this lot of toners finish.. buy a new printer instead .. make sure it is network capable. Far better than using usb printers and since printers are cheap cf the consumables.. well worth it.
Also make sure it is airprint capable and preferably postscript as well although I don't know if the combo is available.
