Time Capsule needs to be sent back to the design shop!!!!

Clearly this product has serious compatibility issues and needs a lot more work to be part of the Apple family of high quality products.
Mine is going in the bin!

Hard to really address anything or try and help since you haven't posted a question, or provided any specifics.
Personally I'm pretty happy with the design. Looks nice and runs well, we're pretty happy with our unit. I've got one older external drive that isn't recognized when I plug it into the back of Time Capsule, but considering the age of the 3rd party drive I'm not complaining. Besides, there's a reasonable chance that with the next firmware upgrade, that drive may wind up being supported.
Sorry to hear you're having trouble with yours.

Some setup is generally required.. because the TC is a network device.. not a plug in via usb.. therefore it has to exist somewhere in your network.

  • How to divide time capsule for Mac and PC back up

Want to know if a cant use my time capsule to do back up for my MacBook and do manual back up for the PC of my wife

How to divide time capsule for Mac and PC back up
It is not possible to divide or "partition" the Time Capsule disk......unless you pull the hard drive from the Time Capsule (which voids the warranty), place it in a separate enclosure or caddy, connect the enclosure directly to your Mac, and use Disk Utility to partition the disk. Then, you must reinstall the disk back in the Time Capsule.
This is a lot of work....best done by an experienced technician. The operation will likely cost more than the cost of the Time Capsule.
Life would be tons easier if you used the Time Capsule with your MacBook and added a separate USB drive to the PC.
If you do not need to divide or partition the Time Capsule storage space, and you are willing to have the Mac and PC share the same space, take a look at an application like Macrium Reflect to backup the PC to the Time Capsule disk.
Still, having done this in the past, things would be much faster and easier for you if you use a separate USB drive for the PC.

  • I just set up my Time Capsule and would like to back up my old MacBook with Tiger (10.4.11) to it

I just set up my Time Capsule and would like to back up my old MacBook with Tiger (10.4.11) to it so I can access the files with out taking up space on my new MacBook Pro.  Since I've purchased this time capsule I've heard that using it as a "server" it not ideal, but at this point I don't have a lot of other options.  Any advice on the best way to back up my old computer and be able to access these files from my new computer??

Open Macintosh HD and look for the Time Capsule icon under the SHARED heading on the left side of the Finder window
Click on the Time Capsule icon and a folder representing the drive will appear to the right. The folder will be named "Data" unless you have changed the name of the drive.
You may need to click Connect As in the upper right hand corner of the window and enter the Time Capsule device password to get the folder to display the first time that you do this.
Once the folder is displayed, double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop. You can drag/drop files onto the icon. This is going to be very tedious, but it can be done.
I would suggest that you look at an application like Carbon Copy Cloner to automatically backup the files that you select. Then you can schedule the applcation to automatically backup any files that have changed each day.

  • Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?

Can the Time Capsule be used just to back up on an existing wi-fi network?    We just set-up a new Xfinity wireless modem which is supposed to be very fast, but Time Capsule set-up instructions indicate we need to use the Time capsule as the primary internet connection.   True?

My mistake. Meant to reply to snorris3. Text is repeated below:
Can I still use it as a back up device?   My new modem is also the router.
    Yes you can.
The best way (and really the only way) to set up the Time Capsule would be to connect an Ethernet cable from your modem/router to the Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule will produce a wireless network by default, but if you don't want to use that network, it is a simple matter to turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule and use it only as a  hard drive for backups.
I would be very surprised if the Xfinity modem/router would even come close to the wireless performance of the Time Capsule, but that may be another discussion.
If you elect not to use the wireless on the Time Capsule, then you will be backing up over the existing wireless network that you already have.
That would be a shame, since a third to half of the total cost of the Time Capsule is tied up in the wireless router portion of the Time Capsule. If you want to use the existing Xfinity wireless network, you could save yourself quite a bit of money by simply connecting a USB or Firewire hard drive to your Mac for backups. But, it's your call.

  • Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files but still have them on the TC for future reference..

Okay so I set up my Time Capsule already and is now backing up 2 of my iMacs. Works great. What I want to know is how to use the TC to directly store files? I want to do this to delete some files on iMac 20inch but still have them on the TC for future reference..eg some movies on iTunes. I want to directly save them on the drive so I can delete them from iTunes and gain some storage. (Ps on iMac 20 inch (it's almost full - 320 GB) when I enter time machine, a tab comes up on finder which reads "Time Machine backups" it's able to be ejected like a disc or a connected device. On the iMac 20 inch, I dragged some files onto there as if using it like a hard drive. Is this the correct method? Then I went to my 27inch iMac and saw the "Time Machine Backups" hoping to see the files I dragged from the 20inch iMac. But the files were not there except a folder that said "Backups.backupdb". Can someone help me?

It's not a good idea to use a network disk for both Time Machine backups and other things.  By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on its output disk, which will then cause problem for your other files.  I'd store those other files on an external disk connected to the Time Capsule.  The problem with that is that Time Machine will only back up files that are local to your Mac.  That means that you'll only have one copy of the files on or attached to your Time Capsule.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

  • Time Capsule disk not visible in Back to My Mac

    Hi,
I've seen this problem couple of times already in questions of other people, but there might be sort of a difference in my situation, and therefore I'm starting this new thread. My situation is following:
    - I set up a new Time Capsule at my home, both as a shared disk and as an WiFi access point for my home network
    - I can see the shared disk from all my computers at my home (in the sidebar of Finder, i.e. using Bonjour)
    - I want to see the shared disk also from my work (using Back to My Mac), and therefore I set my MobileMe login in the Time Capsule (using AirPort Utility -> Advanced -> MobileMe)
    - ... but I don't see the Time Capsule shared disk from my home :-( (i.e. it doesn't appear in the Finder sidebar of my work computer)
    - now I guess I could get plenty of hints about bad NAT, firewalls, etc., but this is an important think:
    - I don't see the Time Capsule from my work computer, but at the same time I DO see my home computer which is connected by this Time Capsule
    - ... so I'd say all the NAT stuff is OK, is it not?
    - so to summarise it: I've got Back to My Mac turned on on both my computers - at home and at work; I've got MobileMe login filled in in the Time Capsule at home (plus disk sharing is enabled, protected by a password); the home computer is connected to the Internet through that home Time Capsule; and from my work I CAN see the shared disk of my home computer, but I CANNOT se the shared disk of the home Time Capsule (which is in the very same network as the home computer)
    - the technicalities are: TC firmware 7.5.2, AirPort Utility 5.5.2, Mac OS 10.6.7 on both computers; TC Airport is in the Bridge mode, it has got a fixed IP 10.x.x.x (at home I'm connected using a metropolitan network with this internat IP range; there are no private NATs allowed, all connected devices must have a unique IP inside the whole network), and its default router is manually set to 10.y.y.y
Please can anyone tell me what can be wrong? Do I do something wrong? Is there a setting I missed? Because this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3486 doesn't mention anything special, it's just a very intuitive setup. And if I've set everything properly, why is there the difference between the home computer and the Time Capsule?
Thanks a lot for any advice
    JR

    rompi,
So get this, out of the blue, I started seeing the unseen TC without doing a thing.  I went through the settings after I posted on the 1st.  I "cycled" the TC disc file sharing off and on and re did the back to my mac function, i.e., I deleted and added my mobile-me user names and passwords.  Nothing happened at first, I could still see the TC in network, but not from the web.  Two weeks past and poof, there it was and it's been there ever since.  Screen sharing always worked and I could always see the mac associated with that TC, that never changed.
    Go figure.

  • How do I daisy chain two time capsules as a wired router and use the hard of both as back-up?

I have a newer time capsule tower and an older time capsule that I wasn't using. The older TC works fine I just decided to upgrade about 6 months ago. I decided to run an Ethernet cable from the room where the TC tower is to the room where the TV in order to create a wired connection to the TC tower. I wanted to use my Apple TV with a wired. In addition, I am in the process of buying a Channel Master DVR plus and besides wanting to use it with older TC wired also wanted to use the older TC’s hard drive to extend the recording time of the DVR. Will this work? If so, my questions are related to setup of all. I assuming I plug the Ethernet cable into the LAN port of the TC tower and the other end into the WAN port of the older TC. Is this correct? What settings do I need on the TC tower and the older TC to make this work as a wired connection? Do I need to turn off the wireless connection on the older TC? Will I just need to plug in the DVR into the older TC’s USB port to use its hard drive? Thanks for your assistance.

I assuming I plug the Ethernet cable into the LAN port of the TC tower and the other end into the WAN port of the older TC. Is this correct?
    Yes
What settings do I need on the TC tower and the older TC to make this work as a wired connection?
The setup "wizard" will automatically provide the correct settings to the older TC to "extend a network using Ethernet" when you start from a factory default reset condition on the old TC.
Do I need to turn off the wireless connection on the older TC?
You can, but if the older TC is located some distance from the new TC, you might want to leave the wireless on to allow an "extended" network with more wireless coverage in the area near the old TC.
Will I just need to plug in the DVR into the older TC’s USB port to use its hard drive?
The USB port on the old TC (and new TC) will only support a normal computer hard drive.....not a DVR. If you want to connect a hard drive for more recording capacity, you will likely need to use a separate USB or SATA hard drive that is connected directly to the DVR, not to the old TC.
Check the documentation on the DVR to confirm how that device should be set up.

  • Does Time Capsule need to be plugged into anything other than power to work

Sorry if this is a real newbie question. I don't own a Time Capsule yet, but am thinking of buying one. What I am wondering is, can I just hide the Time Capsule somewhere in the house (away from burglars) and just have it plugged into a power outlet - i.e. no ethernet/DSL modem - and still have my Mac talk to it? (I already own an Airport Extreme and that's connected to my DSL modem.) I am not sure about this because the online manual talks about plugging it into a DSL modem as well.
    Thanks in advance.
    Phil

    Welcome to the discussions!
One of the configuration options for the Time Capsule is to set it up to "join a wireless network". In this type of configuration, backups occur only over wireless.
As long as the Time Capsule is located where it can receive a good wireless signal, backups will occur correctly. A cabinet may not be a very good location for the Time Capsule for several reasons...one, the Time Capsule needs plenty of free airspace to run without overheating and two, the wireless signal may not be strong enough to be reliable in the cabinet location, especially if this happens to be a metal cabinet.
Backups will occur much faster if you can connect the Time Capsule to the AirPort Extreme using an ethernet cable. Or, if it's not possible to run an ethernet cable to the desired location of the Time Capsule, you might want to take a look a a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same goal by using the AC wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal.

  • HT201250 My time capsule is not allowing a back up indicating the 'time capsule is already in use'.  The system is set to back up and remove the oldest back up so it is not 'in use' as far as can see.  I believe something is in error.  Thoughts?

I am new to this capability.  My problem is that my time capsule is not allowing a back up and indicates, The Back up 'is already in use' yet I have made no changes since I set the system up and now I am seeing this failure.  Thoughts?

    Thoughts?
    Bugs in Mavericks.
Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup

I recently purchased a brand new Airport Time Capsule 2TB. I already am using the previous generation time capsule to back up all my computers data. May I ask how can I complement the usage with my new time capsule?

By default your new Time Capsule will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN
Most likely your iMacs will be connected to the wireless network created by the Virgin Media router. However, both should see the Apple Network under the AirPort icon's drop-down menu as another wireless network that they can connect to. Is this not the case?

  • My three Time Capsules no longer show up anywhere in the Finder.

I have two older Time Capsules and one new Airport Time Capsule.  They show up nicely in the AirPort Utility, but do not show up anywhere in the Finder—neither on the desktop nor the sidebar.
The Yosemite software is all up-to-date on my iMac5, and I have employed all the suggestions offered on this website—including adjustments to “Back to My Mac” and trying to adjust the router (both of which have made no difference).  I have successfully shifted my Time Machine backups over to three Drobos, but I would like to employ the Time Capsules for ™ backups, if at all possible.  I would appreciate anyone’s help—thank you.

Some things are going to be necessary .. and you are going to hate me  but I must insist..
You have used the pipe symbol in a name.. Some characters are illegal .. I think pipe could be one of them.. ie |
Your setup now seems to have even more issues.. so I am going to need to get you do some fixing up and network rearranging..
If I confused you with the comment to connect the TC directly to the computer I am sorry..
Here is what I would do for a full manual setup of the TC.
Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs
The older Mac running Yosemite won't help..
Here are some other details of getting this to work.. ie this is my standard setup under yosemite bug heaven.
A factory reset of the TC is the start.. it is required so you can find it again.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
This user has had success and a few others as well.
    RáNdÓm GéÉzÁ
Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/
There is a few other things to be aware of.
When you have a whole chain of TC.. it can be a lot better to use static IP instead of bridge.
But the setup for this is pretty tricky.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25135547?ac_cid=tw123456#
The one thing I think is important is to turn off all the TC.. and start from just one.. get that one working then add the next one.. either in bridge or static IP and work from there.. but the first one to setup off network if you need to as the setup looks rather complicated.. a laptop or something could be used..
Perhaps even test using the iOS version airport utility which can work better than utility in Yosemite.
I think I am failing to give you cookbook.. but some of the sections I hope are pretty close and you need to fix the parts to get the whole to work.
