Time capsule network issue

I am a tech (windows and linux) and had one of my customers call me about building a network for him using a time capsule he purchased. He is running two macs dual booting mac os and windows, a windows PC and a lexmark printer. I got the network running using the time capsule as a NAT router to share his internet connection.
We are using account based security on the Time capsule harddrive and a mix of wired and wireless clients.
I can initially access the share but after a few minutes or accessing from several machines the share is no available (an access attempt eventually times out) I also can no longer browse the windows network. In this state I can access the internet through the time capsule with out a problem and can print to the printer (IP based addressing) but cannot browse network resources by device name or open the time capsule share.
I can open the time capsule with the airport utility and make changes but this does not make it become available. I can only get the network back by pulling the power on the time capsule and restarting it.
Can you give me any pointers or suggestions?
Thanks

Suggest that you follow this procedure to delete the current wireless network settings on the Mac, as they may likely be corrupted.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Network
Click on AirPort on the left
Click Advanced at the lower right
Locate the name of the wireless network and click it to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the connection list
Click Done
Click Apply
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access
Locate the listing with the name of the wireless network
Right-click it, then choose Delete
Shut down your your Mac and then power it back up
Try to log on to the network again. You will have to locate the name of the network and enter the password to join

  • Dual Band Time Capsule - networking issues

I upgraded from an original Time Capsule that had been running successfully on the 5Ghz band with firmware 7.4.1.
I changed my original TC out and setup everything from scratch so that the DB TC was connected to my cable modem and provided the DHCP leases. Set it to provide N only services on 5Ghz and b/g on 2.4 (I tried the automatic and the manual settings during troubleshooting). Guest networking was turned on and was serving up on the 2.4Ghz channel.
Next I moved my original TC to another room, extended the new DB TC on the 5Ghz network and everything seemed fine.
But then I noticed that whenever I started to run a TM backup (over airport or wireless) that eventually my original TC would seem to go deaf. I could not access the internet through it. However, Airport utility could still see it. On further examination I realized it had lost its IPv4 DHCP address and was only displaying an IPv6 address in the Airport Utility.
After many isolation steps and no success, I decided to move the old TC into the same room as the new DB, connect them via ethernet and turn off the wireless on my old TC altogether to prevent interference. That seemed to work. Until a TM backup was kicked off (btw - all backups right now are to the original TC not the new DB).
Finally, I disconnected the original TC altogether and just let the DB TC run everything (but still I was not backing up to it). Now the new TC by itself seems to stop allowing access to the internet. Internal network is fine. What is really odd, is that rebooting the DB TC sometimes doesn't seem to help. However, reseting the cable modem does (for a little while).
I switched back to my original TC now and everything is working flawlessly again including being able to run TM backups to it and no loss of internet access.
Any ideas? I have already exchanged it once. I have reloaded firmware (7.4.1). I have set up everything from scratch. And still it is really flaky.
    Thanks in advance.

5 GHz signals are capable of faster speeds, but you always have to give up something to gain something else. In the case of 5 GHz, in order to gain higher speed, you must give up distance and penetration power with 5 GHz.
Bottom line...5 GHz signals are significantly weaker than 2.4 GHz signals. Your Mac is looking for the strongest, best quality signal, so it connects to the stronger 2.4 GHz band at the upstairs location.
For most of us, 5 GHz is pretty much of a line-of-sight deal. If your Mac has a clear look at the Time Capsule, and it is relatively close to the Time Capsule,  it will likely connect to 5 GHz.
Otherwise, if the signal must pass through a few walls, or a ceiling (which is much thicker than a wall) the Mac is very likely going to connect at 2.4 GHz.
If you take the Mac downstairs and give it a clear look at the Time Capsule from 10-15 feet or so,  does it connect at 5 GHz?

  • Apple Tv - Airport Express - Time Capsule,  Network Issue

    Hi,
I don't know if I'm on the right thread but I don't know in which one to post my question.
I have the following configuration in my home:
    Floor 1 :
    - ISP connection, connected to Airport Extreme.
Airport Extreme has the Network name : Floor 1 Network
    Floor 2 :
    - Airport Express connected via ethernet to the Airport Extreme from Floor 1.
    - Time Capsule extending the Airport Express.
Airport Express and Time Capsule are on another Network name : Floor 2 Network.
All is working perfectly. (Clients wirelessly connected are MacBooks, iPhones, iPads, iPods, Apple TVs)
    Here is my problem.
I have an Apple Tv on Floor 2
The Time Capsule is located not far from the Apple TV (line of sight, few meters)
The Time Capsule hold my movies
Sometime I have problem to sync the ATV (very very slow). I already restart ATV, and TC. But sometimes, cannot get better a thruput
I would guess that the Apple TV would sometime connect to the AE (which is further than the TC), and then create this problem.
I would like to make sure that the Apple TV connect wirelessly to the TC and not the AE.
How could I do this, knowing that TC is extending the AE wireless network, I cannot select from the AppleTv on which wireless node to connect.
Thanks a lot for the support.

    fleyne wrote:
Yes. Actually, when the thruput is not good, I check first that my book is properly connected to TC and not the AE. This by checking the BSSID.
How could I do this on the ATV ? Or How could I make sure that the ATV is wirelessly connected to the TC?
It probably won't show you everything you'd like to know, but you can learn something about the ATV connection with AirPort Utility. Enter "manual setup" mode, select the menu option Base Station -> Logs and Statistics, then select the "Wireless Clients" tab. That should show you the signal strength and noise for each client.
I would like to avoid to run ethernet cable between the TC and the ATV.
Then you might benefit from a powerline adapter as suggested by the post from "Jolly Giant".

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

  • How to print from windows 7 pc on time capsule network?

I added a new pc with windows 7 on my time capsule network.  Existing network includes 2 macbook pros and 1 mac mini with boot camp and windows xp.  I have been using the windows xp with bootcamp on the mac mini and printing from it for a couple years.  We don't share files between the notebooks and mac mini, just internet access and printing.  My bootcamp side got too full which is why I added the new windows pc (yuk) for my windows programs but I cannot figure out how to get the windows pc to recognize my printer connected to airport time capsule.  I installed the printer software and drivers and connected it with usb and printed but when I connect the printer back to time capsule the pc doesn't see it.  Also, I downloaded bonjour from apple site but still no go.  Any help is appreciated.  As you can probably tell, I only know enough to be dangerous.  That's why I love my Macs, they just work!

The problem is you loaded the printer directly and now do not have it plugged in.. so delete the printer in the control panel.. then setup the printer again.. this time connect to it as network printer. The bonjour should make it available as a network resource..
Tell me if you still run into trouble doing that. You may need to load the IP of the TC manually..
Window7 has higher security level than xp.. and that can sometimes also cause issues.
Are you using SMB compliant names for the TC, wireless and printer??
Can the windows 7 computer get internet via the TC? Can you ping it?
Look up how to reduce the security level in windows to match xp.. I don't remember the details but you have to do some nifty footwork.

  • Time Capsule: "Network name no longer available" error when copying files

    Hi!
I've come upon this error when trying to copy files from my PC to Time Capsule:
    "Network name no longer available".
This seems to happen only on folders that have image sequences in them (.sgi image sequences).
I was planning on transferring the content of my PCs hard drive to Time-Machine in order to smooth out the migration from my old PC to my new MBP but I have to say that I'm a little less confident about using TC as a storage space for my valuable files.
Is there a work around for this? I have tons of folders with .sgi image sequences and it would be a real shame not to be able to transfer them to Time Capsule.
    Please help!

Hi… I don’t think there should be any such limitation for the file transfer wirelessly. However it can be issue, as you wired is connect at a speed of 100 Mbps and wireless connects to the max at 54 Mbps. Try to upgrade the firmware. Also try reducing Fragmentation Threshold and RTS threshold by 40 each under advance wireless settings on the router. Go to www.speedguide.net, and download the TCP optimizer. Try reducing the MTU of your wireless adapter. Please Revert Back, even if this resolves your issue.

  • Time Capsule Network Freezes and Locks Up

I have been having major streaming issues to my Apple TV for a few months now.
Basically, the streaming performance is poor, and after 20 or 30 minutes, the movie that is playing freezes, then the entire wireless network created by the Time Capsule stops working. Anything hooked up via Ethernet however still does work. Only the Time Capsule Network fails. This happens every time I reboot the Time Capsule. I have also started over and reset the device.
I had Apple replace the Time Capsule (gen I, 500 gig), and had my cable company replace my modem. Neither one of these things solved the problem at all. It is still happening.
I have the cable modem running into the Time Capsule, then the Time Capsule runs into a router that sends wired ethernet through various points in the house (although at this time only 1 compute is still hard wired).
I have no idea what is causing this. Could this be an Apple TV issue? Why would it cause the entire network to crash?

The issue was resolved ages ago but I don't remember how....... sorry.

  • Computers on my secured time capsule network?  How did they get on?

When I look at my Time Capsule network, I see two computers connected to it as well as myself: workgroup and macbook c66e5 (or something like that).  I have Uverse and the TC has made its own network in bridge mode.  I have also set up a WPA2 Personal password.  The password is 19 characters long so I know it is very secure, yet somehow these two computers are on the network.  What's weird, is that I cannot see these computers or my own computer on the network from my brother's mac, yet I can see him.  Also, on my uverse network, I never see these other computers in the finder.  Do I have a security problem or is this normal?  Thanks in advance for your help!
    Kyle

I suppose access to the log is yet another thing apple removed from their toyland version 6 airport utility.. if so you will need to install 5.6.. which is a bit tricky but can be done.
Download the real utility.. not available for ML so the lion version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Open the DMG file to see the pkg file but do not proceed further.
    Download install and run unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Drag the pkg file of airport 5.6 utility over unpkg.. it will unpack it to the desktop in a directory.. AirPortUtility56, drill down, applications, utilities and you will find the actual utility.. drag it to your utilies directory. Now you have a REAL TOOL not a TOY.. Log is under advanced.
Then you will know what is happening instead of living in the darkness.

  • Can I add a NAS via ethernet to the Time Capsule network?

"I'm a PC," but am sick of spending all my time with Windows/Network conflicts and am getting ready to take the plunge into the Mac world (insert applause here).
My router/switch is old, and I want "n" wireless capability, so my plan here is to go whole hog and buy a Macbook Pro, an iMac, and a brand new network infrastructure including the 2TB Time Capsule. This way I will stay completely within the Apple family.
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS 2TB that I would like to have available as a second back-up drive on the network. It can only be on the network via ethernet (LAN). It cannot be plugged into the Time Capsule's USB port.
Will I be able to add this drive and get Time Capsule (and even Time Machine) to "play nice" with it? Can I even set the Time Machine on each computer to back up to this drive?
Or should I just sell the ReadyNAS and get a USB drive that will work with the time capsule?
Finally, there are only 3 ethernet ports on the TC. Can I add a switch?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer,
    Shawn

It's reasonable to expect your NAS drive to work when connected to your Time Capsule network. However, it will be difficult for you to use it for Time Machine backups. Apple only supports Time Machine network backups to the disk in a Time Capsule.
It's easy to have multiple computers backing up via Time Machine to the same Time Capsule.
Or should I just sell the ReadyNAS and get a USB drive that will work with the time capsule?
That's up to you. Keep in mind that Apple still doesn't want you to use that USB drive for Time Machine backups.
Finally, there are only 3 ethernet ports on the TC. Can I add a switch?
    Yes.

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • I can Connect my iPhone to Time Capsule network, but I Cant get internett on it??

I can Connect my iPhone to Time Capsule network, but I Cant get internett on it??

Download 5.6 utility for Lion.. inbuilt version is hopeless.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Set TC and wireless names to short, no spaces, no special characters.. ie pure alphanumeric.
Lock the wireless to fixed channels.. only 2.4ghz matters.. as iphone cannot connect to 5ghz.
Try 6, 11 first then 1. I think bluetooth may be set to use lower channels.
That seems to have fixed it for most people.

  • Unable to access certain web servers after creating time capsule network

Since creating a home network with Time Capsule, there are certain web sites or servers that I am unable to connect to. The browser attempts to connect, but always gets timed out.
One site, for example is a link from my fantasy football homepage: football30.myfantasyleague.com
I have no trouble with any other site, and am able to get to the address above if I connect my Mac directly with the Cable Modem, thus bypassing the time capsule network. Also, if I use my old wireless router, I am able to access the address without problem. I am also able to ping the address on my time capsule network,
I've tried accessing this site on multiple computers (both mac and pc) through my home network and using multiple browsers (Firefox, Safari, and IE). So the problem must lie with some time capsule setting (some kind of default firewall). However, I cannot find any setting on Time Capsule or Airport utilities where I could make any adjustments or view any prohibited site access.
Does anybody know why this particular site is constantly blocked when I use the Time Capsule as my router?

    hamish,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussion!
I'm wondering if either or both Airport Utility & Network Prefs have proper DNS server settings. Try this
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Select TC on left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Internet" from the toolbar above.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Try putting in these servers from OpenDNS [http://www.opendns.com>
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click "Update".
Your TC will restart with the new settings.
Next, launch System Prefs --> Network Prefs.
Select the service you usually connect with on the left (Airport or Ethernet).
    Then click, "Advance..."
    Click the "DNS" tab.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Usually "10.0.1.1" will be listed first in gray. This refers back to the settings in the Airport Utility.
Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to add the DNS servers noted above here as well.
    Click "OK" then click "Apply".
Now see if you can access those websites again.
    Cheers!

Why can’t I print from my iPhone 4 to my brother 8890dw printer which is connected to my time capsule/network via ethernet cable???  My iPhone does not even locate my printer, even though I have no problem printing from my Mac to the same printer.

You would need an airprint enabled printer or an app that proides printing function.

  • Extend present Time Capsule network with an Extreme

I currently have a wireless network in my house using a Time Capsule that is connected to the modem in the office. I bought a Blu-Ray player that is connected to my TV in the living room, and if I plug it directly in to a router using an ethernet cable, I can stream movies to my TV. Sooooo.....I found the old Airport Extreme I used before I bought the Time Capsule, and I would like to use it to extend my network to the living room. I have the Extreme plugged in right now by the BLu-Ray player, and the name I used for the old Extreme network is showing up on my laptop, as well as the new Time Capsule network. The Extreme is blinking amber. What do I need to do to just add this Extreme as an extension of my network so I can connect it to my Bu-Ray via a ethernet. Thanks.

Since you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), you can take advantage of the "extend a network" feature.
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.
