Time Capsule overheat message

I have a 3rd generation 1TB Time Capsule fed by a high speed Cable Internet connection.
Two Ethernet ports are used by an old LaserWriter 16-600PS, and a new Apple TV.
The USB port houses a USB hub to which three hard drives (for a total of 5 partitions) are connected.
This setting has been working flawlessly for nearly two years now.
For the second time this month, an alert appeared on my screen telling me that my Time Capsule "might be experiencing an overheating issue", eventhough my connection was working perfectly normal.
I went and checked (my TC is in another room) and found out that it was merely luke warm (as it always is), but that what seemed to be a noisy fan was on. The normally green  status light was blinking yellow.
I disconnected its AC plug and reconnected it a minute later. Everything is now back to normal.
The most recent TC software (7.6.1) is installed.
Wonder if it is a real hardware problem, a bug in the software, or a false alarm triggered by external conditions or whatever.
Is my Time Capsule hinting me that it is about to die ?
Any thoughts ?

Thanks for the infos, LaPastenaque !
Might I add that I am sure that overheating is NOT the problem here : this morning, the same "Possible Overheating" alert appeared a mere 3 minutes after I plugged in my Time Capsule (I now unplug it at night), and it was litterally cold.
Going to the Apple Store today, the buying dates for my Time Capsule and of my new iMac appear to entitle me for a replacement.

Ok, 3min from start up, that is a board fault.. which is not a recoverable failure in the most part. If you can demonstrate the issue.. which might be your problem.. then definitely get Apple to replace it ASAP.
There is one thing I would do if you are stuck with it.. and the Apple guy might try.. do a reset and flash the firmware back to a more reliable version.. eg 7.5.2 and then see if the same thing happens. A hardware fault it will keep doing it.. but firmware does get corrupted. In all the cases where I have seen hardware faults like yours a firmware change made no difference at all. I also suspect that the fault is similar to the first one I listed.. if it happens that near to start up. The log file can sometimes have an indication.. by connecting and disconnecting ethernet or something else like that.
Apple will unfortunately replace like with like.. and not allow you to put the difference into an upgrade.. generally you will get a refurbished.. I would stick that straight on ebay without even unpacking it and buy yourself a Gen4. Refurbished are often not up to scratch for the TC. (And you will only get remainder of the existing applecare coverage AFAIK).

  • Time Capsule error message when away from home network

I have a Time Capsule on my home network.  When I am home, my MacBook backs up to it with Time Machine perfectly.  However, when I am at work or away from home, I continually (every hour or so) get an error message stating the following:
The was a problem connecting to the server "OurTimeCapsule.local".
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
The problem isn't that I don't understand this error. I know perfectly well that my Time Capsule isn't available on my work network, and I don't expect it to be. Prior to installing Lion I never saw this error, and with every update I hope it will be fixed, but I still see it with 10.7.2.  Obviously Apple knows that people using Time Capsules to back up their laptops will not always be on the network that contains the Time Capsule - they even made changes in Lion to save backups to a local disk in times when the Time Machine disk isn't available.
What I want to do is supress the error somehow - it is a modal dialog that sits on top of whatever I'm doing and is extremely disruptive, especially when giving a presentation.  Anyone know how to stop this error?

As a temporary workaround, of course, you can just turn Time Machine OFF.
There was a similar message, with reference to type "file" in the URL, but this one is differnent.
Have you ever used a 3rd-party utility, or followed any instructions to edit some files, to change Time Machine's default behavior?

  • "internal disk space needs repair" Time Capsule error message

I had successfully transfered my entire iTunes library to my TC. Worked without a hitch for a week.
Today, I downloaded an album FROM iTunes. In the middle of the download, it froze. I noticed I was dismounted and my TC light had turned orange (now blinking) and I received the mesage "internal disk space needs repair."
From what I've read on this board, I'm supposed to reformat my TC and start again. That's an unacceptable solution. Is there another way?
Also does anyone have experience in archiving their TC? And will that preserve my precious (to me anyway) iTunes library?

If you don't understand something, ask!
Your backups are in a +sparse bundle+ on your Time Capsule's internal HD. That's what appears on your desktop and/or Finder sidebar when Time Machine is doing a backup (unless you've told the Finder not to show them). If it currently appears, just eject it, then right-click the TM icon in your Dock and select +Back Up Now.+
For the +TM Buddy+ widget, click your mouse on the words "Click here" in my previous post (anything on these forums that's shown in blue or purple, and is underlined when your mouse passes over it, is a "clickable link" -- clicking on it will take you to that web page.
On that page, click the Download button towards the upper right. That will download and install it. Then press whatever key or mouse button you have set up for Dashboard and select +Time Machine Buddy.+ You'll see a display like the one pictured on the web page.
If it doesn't show the box with messages, click the "disclosure" triangle to the left of the word Messages. That should show the messages for the last backup attempt. Click in the message area, and it should be outlined in blue (as shown on the web page). Then click Cmd-A to +Select All+ (and the whole background will turn blue), then Cmd-C to Copy to your clipboard.
Then come here to post a reply, and when this box is outlined in blue, press Cmd-V (or select Edit > Paste from the menubar) to paste the messages here.

  • Cannot Access Airport Disk on Time Capsule(Error Message 67)

Hi I'm having a few issues connecting to the Airport disk on my Time Capsule.
Every time I start my computer The Airport Base Station Agent says:"The Airport Disk "Nasim's Time Capsule" became available. What do you want to do? And I click "Connect with Password" I enter the correct password and I receive a message that says: "Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the disk's administrator (67)."
Is this possible to fix?(I have reset it about 4 times, each time after I have set it up I try to connect ends up wit the same message)

    Welcome to the discussions!
There are 2 passwords for the Time Capsule
One is a device password, which allows access to the TC. The other password is for your wireless network.
Might you be confusing these two? If you have not setup a device password, I believe that the default is "public".
Post back if you need more info.

  • HT3275 Time Capsule error message: "Time machine error-The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/Zeb's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be accessed (error -1)".

Please help! Got myself a timecapsule a few months back. I just use it to back up my mac, and also have a wireless printer connected. I have a Macbook Pro (Mac OS X 10.7.3). When I first got my Time Capsule it backed up flawlessly, but in the last few months has started showing the message above. So now it wont back up at all.
Have done probably 2 system updates during this time, and even a firmware update a few days ago for the timecapsule. This recent firmware update seem to fix it for a day, but now the problem is back!!! Even Mac support wasnt able to help last time I called.

  • Time capsule overheat/dosnt back up

so yesterday it over heated and i got it back to work fine as a router but now it donst really back up i restarted my mac n im gonna wait for the next back up n see if it works proerly but is it possbiabal it could of messed up since it over heated?

I just started using Time Capsule 500GB.
My initial attempt at backing up and Time Machine on my MacBook froze with the same message.
I powered down the Time Capsule by pulling the plug.
I then powered it back up and it was able to do a back up using Time Machine.
Note that my initial backup was by ethernet and not a wireless connection. The TC is extremely slow at doing backups so they need to be small changes when doing so wirelessly.
My TC runs hot as well. It makes me wonder how long the hard drive in it is going to last because electronics as well as hard drives do not fare well with excessive heat.
I read one post where a user lifted the TC a little higher with 4 posts formed of coins to allow air to circulate under it better. I would be nervous that it might fall.
I was hoping someone would look into drilling holes into the top of the case to let air circulate better. I am reluctant to do that to mine since I just got it and would be unable to return it after doing so. I don't know that a better metal heat sink can be used without detracting from its wireless capability.
I would like to see G-technology do something for Time Capsule to make it cooler. There drive cases seem to be always cold to the touch without using a fan.

  • MacBook Air + Time Capsule  frequently dropping internet connection

I too have been having frequently dropped wireless connections between my MacBook Air (MBA) and my Time Capsule(TC). My TC is connected to a cable modem and I also have an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) at a different part of my house which is used to extend my network connecting via ethernet to a PC running VISTA, and wirelessly to a printer and an older MacBook. I also connect wirelessly to my home network with two iPhones, a Squeezebox 3 with a server running on the PC. I have an Apple TV and a Squeezebox 2 connected to my TC via ethernet.
When my connection drops I will either see a Time Capsule disconnect message or if I am surfing the web, the browser just hangs. The wireless ICON strength is still pegged a the max level. None of my other devices (wireless or ethernet) connected to the TC or the other AEBS seem to drop their internet connections. I can re-establish the connection on my MBA by either turning off my MBA's Airport wireless and then turning it back on or by running the network diagnostics. The latter method usually shows green lights for all but the "Internet" and the "Server" which will have yellow lights. Usually when I select my wireless network and press continue, it will prompt for my WPA2 password which I have to reenter even though I always check the box for it to remember the password in the keychain.
After reading the various discussions on disconnect problems and trying the various "solutions" I was still having the disconnect problem.
Last night, I decided to turn off my Time Capsule and was then able to maintain an internet connection for considerably longer than before. Perhaps it was one of the other "solutions" that caused that. After turning my TC back on, the disconnect problem reoccurred within about 5 minutes.
Next, I did my too frequent Time Capsule remedy which was to disconnect the power and then reconnect the power. (Seems like some of these devices (APPLE TV included) could use power switches.) I then deleted the .sparsebundle backup file on the Time Capsule. I was then able to restart Time Capsule backup and things have been running uninterrupted for over 12 hours...still backing up (20GB in 12 hours? Doesn't seem very fast!). I can report back later if this actually "fixes" my disconnect problems in the future. I am dubious that it will.
I have several questions about the MBA and the TC/Time Machine backup operation.
1.) I often forget about the TC when I close the lid on my MBA and haul it off to work. At work (connecting via ethernet), I will eventually get a TC disconnect error. But I am wondering if there are points in the backup process where a random disconnect will cause some sort of TC corruption. What is the recommended way of handling this? Should I always stop the Time Machine backup before turning off my MBA? (A nuisance if so!)
2.) What is happening when the TC backup operation stops functioning and hangs up the MBA's internet connection? (I see lots of messages logged in the system log when this happens; but, of course, I don't have much of a clue of which ones are normal and which are not normal. I could send a copy of the logs when it happens next (I am assuming it will).
Also one other anecdote. A few months back, I had taken another AEBS to my work to use during a training conference. My MBA kept dropping its connection while the other PC laptops in the room maintained their connections...(very embarrassing!). Maybe one of the other "solutions" would have fixed the problem or maybe if I had just turned off my Time Machine backup it would not have disconnected. I will repeat that exercise when I get a chance now that I have some things to try.
It seems pretty clear to me from my own experiences and the discussion reports of others that the disconnect problem lies in the MBA's wireless internet connection software or the configuration of it. It seems like it is having difficulty recovering from various wireless connection "mishaps".

Folks, I was having a very similar problem for the last 6 months. My connection was fine until June 2008, after which my Macbook and my Time Capsule would constantly conflict. If I rebooted or reset the TC, or the MB, things would be fine for a few minutes or sometimes a few hours and the problem would recur soon thereafter. About a month ago, I had to do a clean reinstall and the problem vanished for about 5 days, after which it reappeared. My MB never had a problem at work, or at someone else's home or with other routers, only with TC. Apple sent me a new TC, then they replaced my Airport card but the situation did not change ... UNTIL ABOUT AN HOUR AGO.
An hour ago, I called Apple for the nth time in the last 6 months, and the rep heard me out (just like the previous n-1 reps). He then asked me to to System Preferences --> Accounts --> Login Items and asked if Real Player Downloader showed up in my list. Indeed it did. He asked me to remove it, and told me that Apple had just figured out that the Real Player downloader was recently found to be causing a drop in the connection between Macbooks and the TC (as well Airport Express).
The problem I've been having baffled everyone. All the previous reps, the guys at the Genius Bars, nobody had a clue. Joe (the rep I spoke with this morning) seemed very confident that the removal of the Real Player Downloader from the list of login items would resolve the problem. So far, so good. My connection seems solid (its only been an hour, but earlier it would drop after 5 minutes of use).
I hope my problem that (literally!) used up hundreds of hours of my time has been finally resolved. I hope this solution will work for at least some of you as well. What gives me hope is that this solution is logically consistent with the history of my problems. I probably first downloaded Real Player in June 2008. And when I did a clean install, I remember downloading Real Player a few days after the reinstall. So I'm pretty hopeful that my issue has been finally resolved.
Shame on Real Player for putting out a defective piece of software. And thank you Joe!

  • HT3275 what do I do about this time machine error message?  The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Paul Brandow's Computer.sparsebundle" is already in use.

How to resolve the following time capsule error message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/XXXX Computer.sparsebundle” is already in use.

If you are running Mountain Lion try this:
Open AirPort Utility (If you are in Mountain Lion this will be 6.0 or Higher)
    Select you Time Capsule
    Select the Disk Tab
    Deselect "Enable File Sharing"
Click OK Let the Time Capsule Re-Boot
Go Back into AirPort Utility and re-select "Enable File Sharing" and let it Re-Boot again.
    This should fix the problem.
If you are not running Mountain Lion the advice provided by other should work  (http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html).  The main thing is to reset users.

  • Time Capsule has high pitch noise

I guess these things are notorious for their internal power supply failing. My time capsule started making a high pitch noise yesterday. Is this a sign of the power supply failing? Any idea of how much it would cost to repair? I have no applecare.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Unfortunately, a high pitched squeal is almost always a sign of a power supply capacitor that is failing. Suggest you contact Apple to get the name of a nearby authorized Apple repair shop.
This link may also provide some help on repairs, although I cannot vouch for any of these shops.

  • Time Capsule Error:  Unable to complete backup...

For the past two days I've been getting the following Time Capsule Error message whenever it attempts to back up my system, "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory." I can't get any more information about the error than that. If I reset my TC, will it lose all of my previous backups? Restarting my Mac didn't help. All other functions are fine, i.e. WiFi is good and I can still print to my printer hooked up to it. Any ideas?

I'm having the exact same problem. If a b/u does kick off, it shuts down the Mac. I get the darkened screen with the window that says a reset is required.
Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Trouble logging in after reset of Time Capsule

I've got a two part question. After taking an extended vacation, I found my house sitter had changed the settings on my Time Capsule. After I changed them back, I no longer automatically reconnect every time I wake up my computer. At least once a day I have to use Network Diagnostics. I also can't connect with my iPhone or my Apple TV. The Tivos all connected fine though. I also have an Apple Extreme set up in the same room simply to connect a printer and it connects without a problem.
The second issue: When I set it up this time, I couldn't find the option to set up a Guest network. How can I do that now?

And even then, I wasn't given the option of setting up a guest network.
A possibility....the Guest Network option will not appear if the Time Capsule is setup in Bridge Mode. You can check as follows:
    AirPort Utility > Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
If the TC is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)", the Guest Network feature is not available. AirPort Utility thinks that there is another router on the network, so it chose that setting for the TC.
If you have another router upstream from the Time Capsule, Bridge Mode would be the correct setting for the Time Capsule.

  • Time capsule with no internet connection

I have an internet connection through a wireless router that is set up off site. I need to use the time capsule to back up but I have no way of physically connecting the capsule to the internet. Is it possible to back up wirelessly?

    Clint,
I have the older airport extreme model and I've attached a usb hard drive to serve as our backup drive
Is this the "round" AirPort Extreme? If yes, the USB port only supports printing from compatible printers.
Even if you have the newer version of the "square" AirPort Extreme, Apple does not support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port on the device, so I can't recommend that you even consider this.
If you want to use Time Machine to backup, you'll need to attach the drive directly to the computer, or consider a Time Capsule.

  • 2 TB Time Capsule - 100MB Virgin Media Broadband

I've seen that Virgin Media are upgrading to a new wireless router with modem build into it. This is going to cause me some massive conflicts with my time capsule tho.
    http://shop.virginmedia.com/broadband/broadband-extras/wireless-routers.html
At the moment.. I have a 50mb modem that came with my 50mb broadband... Downstairs... and my wireless time capsule upstairs for easy of use connected VIR RJ45 cable.
I think that my current modem could possibly handle the 100MB speeds but I would need to check with Virgin Media first.
I've just done a speed test and got 49.96MB download speed over wireless!!
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/1098123263.png
While running, Skype, and many other apps, including a PC connected to the network!
My main question is how will the time capsule work if I have to upgrade my modem to this new router? because I removed my old wireless router and replaced it with the Time Capsule.
Also does anyone have any ideas if the Time Capsule is able to pump out 100MB wireless speeds?
    Thanks
    Simon

    Simon,
You have MB and mb confused. Internet and network connection speeds are normally stated in terms of Mbps or Mb.
You have a 50 Mbps modem now. There is no reason to replace this with a new modem/router unless you really need the higher speed 100 Mbps device. If you elect to do this, all that you need do is replace the modem you have now with the new modem/router. Your Time Capsule will continue to work the same way it does now. You simply would not use the wireless capability of the new modem/router, or you could turn it off since you are using the Time Capsule for that capability.
Also does anyone have any ideas if the Time Capsule is able to pump out 100MB wireless speeds?
It's 100 Mbps, not 100 MB. The Time Capsule supports up to 1000 Mbps connections using ethernet. The fastest attainable speed over wireless is about 300 Mbps, so your Time Capsule will continue to be much faster than the new modem/router if you choose to go with the new device. In other words, your wireless speed will be limited by your Internet connection, not by the Time Capsule.

Hi - can anybody support me with a time capsule error message (-1) : could not access macintosh.sparesbundle? mny TXS

This is a Lion bug. compounded probably by the bugs in 7.6 and later firmware of the TC.
Rebooting the TC is disconnecting the users .. Lion is failing to unmount the TC after a backup. Reboot is forcing it to do so.
But if you download and install the non-toy version airport utility for lion.. which still has a disk page.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Install and run that exclusively, on the disk page is a simple icon, disconnect all users.. wonder why they have that icon.. well now you know. So you don't need to reboot the TC. Just press the button (icon) so to speak.
