Time Capsule - What can I do with it?

Hello Community,
I think, this is the first post I write here, so - it's nice to be here, I hope there's anybody around who understands and could help me. I'm looking for an external Harddrive that I have not to plug in my USB Port, everytime I need it. So I found the Airport Time Capsule. I bought the 2 tb version and was very excited about the Design as I set it up. But then I got some problems. I thought, I could put it on my table next to my TV and use it wireless in my already existing Home WLAN. There are two options - is that the first time I'm totally dump with an Apple Product, or did I missunderstood something?
By the way - I hop I write clearly, because it's not my best language.
So I thought, I set it up, connect it to my Router, and use it as a harddrive on the existing network as a 'server' like harddrive. But when I set it up, I have to connect it by a ethernet cable to my router and even if the setup is done and the green light is turned on and I plug the ethernet cable out, the yellow light is back and I can't find it anywhere on my mac. What do I wrong? I don't want to create a new Network, I only want to add the Time Capsule to the existing. So when I'm at the Assistent program, and I choose the secound point, so I mean "add the time capsule to an existing network" and I click next - in the top line there still stands "the airport time capsule will create a network" (I don't know if thats the correct translation I only know the german one).
What do I have to configure? Or am I on the wrong way? Can you help?
Thanks for your help!
Best wishes

Yes - ok I think I described it not that clear as I wanted it to.
My main Router is mounted on a wall in an other room, where is not enough space to put everything around, what I wanted to connect to my TC. So I wanted to set the TC up, bring it in the right room, for my printer, the home cinema center, and my secound external harddrive, which everything runs only on LAN. So I need to connect the TC to an Apple Network. So I only need an Apple Airport Express or Extrem to put it via Ethernet on my Router, so then my TC is able to find a Network to log wirelessly in to?
The distance from my router to the living room (where I'd like to connect everything to the TC) isn't that far. By air there are only 4 metres and one wall.
But you helped me a lot! So I will go and buy an Apple Airport Extreme tomorrow, set it up to my router and hope that it'll work that way
Thanks a lot,
best wishes

  • Renamed both computers during Time Capsule setup & can't sync with MobileMe

I purchased time capsule (“TC”) beginning of September (month ago) to use for my iMac and MacBook. When I set up the TC, the form needed a computer names for both computers and I erroneously thought these computer names were just for somehow just for TC's reference, so I gave a different name than both computers already had. (Yeah, I know, pretty stewpid.) So now, Finders on both Macs shows two devices – two hard drives -- one device for old computer name and one for new computer name -- on each computer. I set up TC a month ago and have not been able to properly sync my iPhone since. When I attempt to sync a computer with MobileMe, the message screen on iMac reads: “A computer named ‘iMac - XYZ' (the new name I gave iMac on Time Capsule) is already registered with the MobileMe synchronization server. If you use the same name for two different computers you may lose your synchronized information on all registered computers and devices. You can safely re-use a previously registered name if you are sure it is the only computer now using this name under your MobileMe account.” I can then either click on “Use same name,” or “Enter another name.” Here’s a list of my “registered computers” along with their MobileMe sync information:
The following registered computers are being synchronized using this MobileMe account on MobileMe:
    Localhost – XYZ……………………last sync: 10/4/09
    XYZ’s iMac (old name)……………………last sync: 9/1/09
XYZ’s MacBook Pro (old name) ……………………last sync: 6/3/09
iMac - XYZ (new name) ……………………last sync: 10/5/09
MacBook XYZ (new name)……………………last sync: never synchronized

Something is wrong with your ipod.

  • I can't set up my Time Capsule, what can I do?

The problem is that Airport Utilility doesn't recognize the device.

Use ethernet for intiial setup.. wireless is useless.
Plug it directly into the computer.. press and hold reset until the front led flashes and then do the setup.
You do not need the TC in the network to do this..

Thank you William for your most helpful response. I shall deal first with your three comments:
Not being tech savvy, I would not have been able to make that call myself but it sure makes sense.
I have updated my profiles as you suggest.  Excellent tip.
This guidance is good.  Being new to Apple Support Communities, I did not find the field a labeling and guidance to be clear, a point you make.  Now I know, I shall do as you say and will use the small slim box as a header to the full message/question, which will place in the larger box below.
Secondly, I come to your question: Did anything change on your Mac recently, such as replacing the disk or main logic board?
The answer is “yes”.  Two events have happened both of which concerned the Time Capsule:
The telephone company, with which I have access to the Internet and I have my email account, installed a new modum.  After the technician left I had to try and get the Time Capsule and WiFi working again which ended with my having to call Apple for technical assistance.  The Apple technician walked me through a number of procedural steps which effectively re-set up the Time Capsule.
Access to the Internet failed and the telephone company reset the modum.  I had to call Apple again.  This time the technician did not reset the Time Capsule but walked me through a number of steps tha included renaming the “site”  (not the Time Capsule).
Another piece of information that may be relevant is that the MacBook Pro uses the Time Capsule for backup.  Everything appears to be in order.  When I enter the Time Capsule for this laptop I have backups going back for a long time.
Also, I do a weekly backup of the two computers onto another external hard drive using the Time Machine software.  So I have another backup of both computers.

  • If I bay time capsule, I can use ma tv with smart tv and wi fi to watch my films on capsule?

If I bay time capsule, I can use ma tv with smart tv and wi fi to watch my films on capsule?

No. Smart TVs can't use AFP to connect to the TC. Although, it might help to know what your smart TV actually is (i.e. model number? Make?)

  • Can I use time capsule as an NAS devise with sonos, to play music library when iMac is off?

can I use time capsule as an NAS devise with sonos, to play music library when iMac is off?

Apparently Sonos system can play from the library without needing iTunes running.
In that case yes, the library can be played directly from TC.
    See https://discussions.apple.com/message/18562619#18562619
Sonos needs fully compliant SMB file system.. this is important.. and not what the Apple system is using to access the TC.
Moving the library has to be done correctly.
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4527
There are plenty of discussions in forums and technical sites.. this seems well worth a read.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/12/how-to-offload-your-itunes-library-to-a-nas /
TC is very non-ideal itunes library location.. unlike a real NAS.
Just so you are aware. If you have TM backups on it.. mixing backups and data is not a good idea.
At least consider moving backups to USB drive. You will need the speed of the TC internal drive for using the library though.
TC has no way to back itself up.
TC is slow to start.. you will get errors as the library is not found.
And quick to spin down drives.. it is not designed to stream media.. it is a backup target for TM.

  • Time Capsule. Can I back up 2 different macs? What do I have to do.

Time Capsule. Can I back up 2 different macs? What do I have to do.
I want to be able to back up 2 mac. Both have about 70gs of stuff and I have a 1 tb drive. So that should be no problem. I have the time capsule already set-up wireless.
Do I have to make 2 folders? One for each computer? If so how do I do this.
    Any help would be great.
I just do want to have to do a restore and get all of my daughters stuff on my mac.
    Thanks

Just set them both up, via #Q1 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Time Machine will make a separate +sparse bundle disk image+ for each Mac's backups.
As noted, it will be much faster to do the initial setup and first backup while connected via Ethernet, if at all possible. So your best bet will be to set up one, and let it's first backup complete, before setting-up the second.

I have a BT Infinity router plugged into the Time Capsule, not sure where the radio settings are?
They are able to use the network settings of the TC i.e. they can connect to the internet via the wifi through the TC but when they try and connect to the AirPort Disk this is where it is not allowing a connection.
I don;t have the drive shared out at all at the moment, is this necessary?  How do I do this if so?
I have attached the screen shots of all the settings.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • I/O timeout all the time on console - what can I do with my hard drive? Macbook pro late 2011

My macbook has been extremely slow for a while and after looking on this site I discovered I should look at the console - and noticed I had I/O timeouts all the time which I gather are a problem.
What can I do with my hard drive? If I back it up using time machine and erase the disk with zeros will the problem continue if I simply restore from time machine?
Or should I invest in a new hard drive - but if I buy a new hard drive is there something on my computer that will wreck that one as well? i use final cut pro/studio a lot and it's got to the stage where I can barely use it - do I need a 7200rpm hard drive? My current one is a 500gb 5400rpm.
I have 16gb of RAM in but since upgrading this from 4GB it made a difference to the speed for all of two seconds then the computer returned to its normal slow speed.
Would appreciate any help on this issue as I'm not particularly technical.

I wouldn't worry too much about what the Console logs are showing... although I/O timeouts, if related to reading/writing to your disk may be a problem. I would have to see the whole Console message to know for certain...
Your hard drive is sure to be slowing you down with FCP. Your best bet would be to upgrade to an SSD, if you can afford it. It's the only way you're going to see a real speed increase in FCP as so many large temp/cache files are written to the drive.
If you can't afford a SSD, you may want to look at a 7200rpm SATA III drive (if your MBP supports SATA III - which model do you have? 2011 or later, I'm assuming, since you note that you've 16GB of RAM?).
You should also update your OS to 10.7.5 if your profile reading of 10.7.2 is correct. Won't help speed, but will be more reliable -> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582.

  • I have a new Macbook pro and can't recall the password I used with my Time capsule - How can I (ideally) retrieve or possibly change the time capsule password?

I have a new Macbook pro and can't recall the password I used with my Time capsule - How can I (ideally) retrieve or possibly change the time capsule password?

Remember security on a TC is an illusion.
Simply press the reset button for 1-2 sec.. you must not do too long .. it will then hard reset.. but soft reset will revert all passwords to default for 5min. ie TC password is now public.
Remember this the next time because anybody at all can change your passwords.
Once into the TC you can then open the view passwords if you wanted any weaker security. Click and open the TC.. and click on edit.. then go to the top menu..
Voila .. all your passwords in plain sight to any Tom Dick and Fred.

I connected my Canon printer to time capsule, and can print OK. However, I can't get the printer scanner to work. How do you set up the scanner with Time Capsule?

You cannot use USB. It has to be a network capable printer.. is it?? You did not indicate how it is connected.. but by wireless or ethernet then scanning is possible otherwise not.

Replace the Time Capsule with one that has a larger hard drive. Or erase the one you have and start a new set of backups or backup one of the computers to a different backup drive.

Hello, I have two questions on time capsule  I can only have it on my external hd files and free up my internal memory to my mac  I can use an external hard drive, in my case a lacie rugged as shared memory for my two computers

I have a mackbook pro and an iMac if I buy a time capsule 2tb airport, I can use it with time machine and what would be the best way to use it.
There is no particular setup required for TM.. both computers will create their own backup sparsebundle which is like a virtual disk.. Pondini explains the whole thing if you read the reference I gave you.
and how to use time capsule airport whit other external hd to use my old lacie airport with the new time capsule
Up to you.. you can plug the external drive into the TC and enjoy really slow file transfers or you can plug it into your computer and use it as external drive.. which is faster than the TC.. and TM can include it in the backup.
Again everything is explained in the reference.. you are not reading it.

  • Using AirPort Time Capsule as an external drive with access to files by guest account

Is it possible to use my AirPort Time Capsule as an external drive with access to files by a guest account?
I would like to store a large number of folders containg photographs on my AirPort Time Capsule and allow anyone with a password to access the photographs - at the time of viewing the Time Capsule would be connected to the internet but I wouldn't want users to actually access anything other than the files on the Time Capsule - is this possible?  if so any help in configuring it would be really helpful.

No it is not possible.. Guest is just that.. a guest that is allowed permission to access the internet but none of the local files.
To give a person access to the TC they must have password to access your normal network..
From there it is up to you how you do this.. people cannot actually access files on your computers unless you give them share and password permissions for that.. you can even setup accounts on the TC although I recommend against it.. if you want shared photos anyway. All security on a TC is illusion.. merely pressing the reset and it is all blown away.. so if you are concerned about security don't put stuff on the TC people should not access.. or like your TM backups ensure they are encrypted.
A person can then access you TC and the photos.. but what else on the network??
