Time Capsule with two macs

I currently have an imac and am purchasing a macbook. I would like to have a wireless network that they can both share and a single hard drive that can back up the data on both. Time Capsule seems ideal for this but, can I indeed back up both machines onto one TC? Also, does TC have software it ships with that would allow me to back up my Tiger based imac? Thanks.

The Time Capsule is marketed as being able to backup more than one Mac.

You can probably use some other software to backup to a Time Capsule, but Time Machine is for Leopard only.

  • Using time capsule with two macs

    Hi
I am using a MBP and an iMac. Is it possible to set up TC to save work from the two macs?

Ah, that's good to know, i was thinking that it may only be used for one dedicated mac.  Ok, so at the moment I have my MBP linking with TC wirelessly. I want to do the same for my iMac, do i just set it up the same way? If so does TC then just save both without conflict, or does one have to partition TC?

  • Time Capsule with two external USB harddrives (only 1 is recognized).

I have a 1TB Time Capsule with two MacBooks, a Mini, an AppleTV, and 1 Vista PC, connected to it without any problems. I've also added a USB2 hub where I have plugged in a Canon printer, 1 500GB Seagate drive, and 1 1TB Lacie (BigDisk) drive. For some reason the 1TB Lacie drive does not appear as an available drive on the Time Capsule but the Seagate drive works fine.
I've formatted the Lacie drive multiple ways (currently it is Mac Extended (Journaled) with a single partition) but this did not change anything. I can plug the Lacie directly into any of the MacBooks or Mini and it appears as an available drive. What gives? Does Time Capsule only support 1 external drive? Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for your post. I did as you suggested and plugged the problem drive directly into the TC and sure enough the drive appeared and was accessible. It appears that the problem follows the USB hub. I tried a second hub (but it was only USB1.1 capable) and it had the same problem. I will take this up with LaCie.
    Thanks again for the response.

  • I am trying to back up on my new time capsule with my mac book pro.  It's been 25 hours and only done 5.8gb of 129gb. any advice.  Thanks

I am trying to back up on my new time capsule with my mac book pro.  It's been 25 hours and only done 5.8gb of 129gb. any advice.  Thanks

You can backup 2 computers as long as the TC has enough space.
Your access might be restricted if you set it up with users.. you must log in with the correct user to get access to the files.
Otherwise you should be able to see both sparsebundles just with finder.

  • Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express, Can I link up one time capsule with two airport express

Hi, I would like to know whether I can link up one time capsule with two airport express. The result why is that I would like to put one time capsule at first floor, two airport express at 2nd floor and 3rd floor. All these three share one network. Please advise. Thanks.

There are several ways to conenct them. We need to know what it is you want to accomplish first. Do you want better Wi-Fi coverage on the second and third floors or do you want to stream music to the xpresses?

  • Airport time capsule with a mac mini

so can i use airport time capsule with a mac mini

What do you want to do with it??
The TC is designed as a network target for TM on any Mac computer.. so of course it will work with a mini.
It is also a standard wireless router for a network.. that will work on any network client device..
It is NOT designed as a NAS.. ie network storage.. I recommend people not use it for that purpose. But people can do stuff that I don't recommend.
Good luck when the TC dies and their files are all lost.
Did you want to do something different to the norm??

  • Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Sure, if the printers connect using the Ethernet port, you have 3 ports on the Time Capsule.
If the printers connect using wireless only, the Time Capsule will support up to 50 connections.
If your printers connect using USB, then you will need a powered USB hub. Something like this, for example:

  • View files on Time Capsule with 'different' Mac

After my install of Lion failed, the Apple Store did a clean install and renamed my MacBook (I can't remember the exact old name).  Now I need a file off my Time Capsule backup but Time Capsule seems to be thinking the MacBook is not to have access to the existing backed up files because I see no way to gain access to them.
But my question is more general, How can I view and copy particular files residing on Time Capsule with a 'different' Mac?  Can it be searched with a utility of some sort?
    TIA, Allan

If you're talking about Time Machine backups, when your Mac's internal HD was erased, it's treated as a different drive -- and that drive is no longer connected.    See #E3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Note that the name of your Mac doesn't matter; Time Machine uses a hardware address to keep track of it.  Only if you get a new Mac or have the logic board (which contains the address) replaced, will that become a problem.

  • Time Capsule with 2 macs?

I just bought a new iMac and I still have my other one, which is currently backed up on my time capsule. I tried searching but didn't find any solutions so I'm afraid to start backing up the new computer, I don't want to screw anything up with the old backups.
I already migrated all the content from my other computer (couldn't get the time capsule to work for me) so I have a second User created on the new computer. So I'd like to figure out how to backup the new computer while still being able to backup the old one without overwriting anything.
Is there a way to do that? The old computer is going to be used by my kids, so I plan to delete all my apps and files off it, and I still want to be able to do time machine backups on that one too, but to keep them separate from my work computer (new one). If anyone knows how to set this up properly, I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance ~

If you are backing up by time machine.. the two will backup without any problems.. TM creates a back for each Mac and maintains them separately on the TC.. so easy.
Be warned though.. if you wipe the old comp and start again.. over time TM will remove all those files from the backup.. if you want stuff you currently have in the backups or on the computer get a program like superduper or Carbon Copy..and make a full disk backup.. you can also do a backup of the TC to a USB drive plugged into it, then wipe the TC and start again.

  • How to use 1 time capsule between two macs

We have a mac and a mac book pro. How do we separate them on my time capsule so they dont share caledars, address books, etc?

Ok, isn't there a setting to set a password for your calendar?
    But try this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2513?viewlocale=en_EN#
    Check 'public your calendar'
Apple says that you HAVE TO PUBLISH your calendar. So I think that it isn't shared by default.
Check if you calendar is shared or not.
So I think that you son isn't able to sync your calendar, because you need 'account informations' to sync/connect an iPhone with a calendar.
And you SYNC your data and don't make backups on time capsule?
Because if you make backups from your mac and if you have protected your mac-account with a passwort, he can't access your data.

  • HT1178 i can't connect the time capsule with my mac using the aiport utility. i want to use the time capsule to make backup for my mac book pro. the time capsule is giving a flashed amber light. please advice me

the time capsule is giving flashed amber light and i cant connect it to my mac book pro. i want to use it with the time machine to make backup for my mac. please advice me.

To do the setup, plug it in via ethernet.. do not try to setup over wireless.. Once it is setup you can plug the TC into the network and use wireless.
Most likely you will use the TC in bridge to an existing modem router.. but we cannot help as you have no details of the network setup.
I do recommend in the setup of the TC you use SMB type names.. that means, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. as later Mac OS do have issues with long names, spaces and that apple shocker, the apostrophe.

  • Time Capsule with two extreme's

I have a smart home with a structured wiring hub that disperses cat5 cable to every room in the home.  Currently, i am running isp cable modem to bridge, bridge disperses signal to cat5 locations throughout home.  Time Capsule connected directly to ethernet, extreme one & two (configured in bridge mode) the same in different locations in the home.  Airport utility is not seeing all three items connected to network.  I have to move in range of them to view in Airport utility.  To trouble shoot, I moved Time capsule to hub, wired cable modem to time capsule, time capsule to bridge, bridge to home.  Only then did the my entire network become detected in airport utility no matter where I was in home.
My dilemma is that I would like to have time capsule hardwired to main computer, and available to disperse better wireless signal.  It operates much better outside structure wired hub.  What are my options for creating the whole home expansive hardwired network?  If apple product had to wired directly to modem, then to bridge, can I go buy and express to achieve that?  Is there a way to do configure it the way I have?

    Any ideas? anybody?

  • Using the Time Capsule with a Mac OS X 10.4.10

I'm sure this post has turned up often, but I've searched Google high and low and cannot find an easier solution to my problem.
Basically, I bought the Time Capsule because I wanted to use the wireless router and I wanted an external hard drive. I've read articles stating that, even though I don't have Leopard and thus don't have Time Machine, I can still use the Time Capsule's storage to manually back up files (MP3s, photos, movies, etc.). However, I cannot find anywhere to tell me exactly how to do this (and it's making me feel rather illiterate when it comes to Macs)...
    Could someone help me out?

All you need to do is follow the Time Capsule setup guide. I believe the 1st gen. TC setup guide is non-specific for Leopard/Tiger OS.
    http://www.apple.com/support/airport/
Perhaps you need to describe your setup, what you want, what you've done, and what doesn't work yet.

  • Using time capsule with multiple macs!

    hey guys!!

    thanks for any info

    thanks for the replies guys
yeah i was thinking i will just turn on TC once a week, if thats possible, to do a weekly backup as thats what i normally do now, or backup after something important like editing family videos etc or doing business work
i hope TC is user friendly though (as its coming from apple i guess it will be) and its easy to delete unwanted previous backups etc, do you think this will be the case please?
    thanks
Currently, to delete anything in Time Machine, you just open it, and navigate to whatever you want to delete, highlight it, then select whether you want to delete it ONLY from that backup, of from ALL backups. I see no reason to believe that Time Machine will behave any differently for the Time Capsule than it does now.
As for deleting a whole backup, one would suspect that you would go into your backup folder and delete it
As for turning it on and off, yes that is an easy option(made even easier by last update 10.5.2). Turn it on, then select backup now, let it finish, tun it off.
As mentioned there is an automation program out, but I have not seen/tried it. I just run Time Machine 24/7 personally.

  • How do you use time machine with two macs?

I have an external hard drive hooked up to one of my macs. How do I get it to back up both macs?

You create the password for someone when you add them as a user under Users box in the Sharing Preferences > File Sharing. you have to click the plus sign under the users box to see this come up. you will get a mini address book looking thing, but I suggest just hitting the New Person button. you will see a dialog that asks for this new persons name AND password.
So lets say you want to share HardDisk123.
    1) First you add HardDisk123 to the Shared Folders list on the left.
    2) Then, making sure HardDisk123 is selected, you click the plus + under users on the right.
    3) In the window that opens, you click "New Person" and create a username and password.
    4) Once you OK out of that window, set that new persons permissions (Read & Write, Read only, etc), using the little up and down arrows next to their name.
Now you have shared HardDisk123, and created a new account that can access HardDisk123. That new account doesn't have access to anything else on your computer.
Enabling SMB sharing (in Options) is a global setting. Its confusing because you may see 1 or more users in the list there. But those are not really the same users we were just dealing with (although there could be overlap). The list of users that appear under SMB sharing in that options page is users that have an account on your computer. When you start up your computer, if you don't have automatic login set up, you are prompted to , well LOG IN. Thats how you can have a whole family of different users on one computer. They each log in separately and all have different desktop backgrounds, screen saver settings, etc etc. It how you keep your kids from deleting all your files. Well, if you have multiple user accounts setup (in the Accounts preference pane) then they will show up here under SMB and you can individually enable SMB sharing for all or just a few of those users. When you try to do that, it asks for a password.
So don't confuse those users, with accounts you create to give people on your network access to your folders on your computer.
