Well, they kind of semi related really.First one - I have my power button on my PC set to sleep, as I prefer this to shutdown, and if I need to shut down I will use the power icon in the start menu. After first power on, I went to bed and slept my computer, as I normally would and used to do with my Win7 machine. I woke up in the morning and everything was fine, powered on PC, logged in blah blah blah.I went to sleep the computer again last night, and it didn't work. To change the amount of time you want each frame to display, you can do one of 2 things:
-Change the frame rate of the Image Sequence in the Media settings (select the layer and typ Shift F). If the frame rate is less than the project frame rate, your clip will play more slowly. If the frame rate is greater than the project frame rate, it will play more quickly.
-Change the Speed in the Timing section (Inspector->Properties->Timing). This is the method I think most people use.
To blend the frames, change the Frame blending option, also in the Timing section of the properties.

Is time lapse recording back in iMovie '09?

iMovie HD (v.6) had a built-in time-lapse recording function that would use your webcam; it was pretty cool. iMovie '08 got ridd of it for some inexplicable reason, does anyone know if it's back?

It's a fairly hard-core feature (but I guess so is green screen) so hardly surprising it didn't make it in to the 'new' iMovie.

It depends.. I cannot give you a yes or no.. but generally no..
TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router.. most cameras need ftp server to record.. there is no FTP available in the TC.
But you will need to check the specs of the camera.. if it is able to write files to the TC as network device via SMB it might work. You will need to fix up any non-SMB compliant names.. ie all names must be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric for it to work.

HArm, I believe the poster was asking if Ol does time lapse capture of real time video. It does not. If the source video is already time lapse, then of course it can. but if this was the situation I doubt they would be asking the question.
This feature was in old versions of Premiere 6 and 6.5 so many folks were hoping it would reappear in Pr or Ol at some point. It hasnt yet. (You could tell premiere 6.5 to capture say every 200th frame)

Does the time-lapse feature in imovie work well?

Hi, I just got a gig to produce a time-lapse video covering the changing light on a building from dawn until dusk. I work in Final Cut Express, but have heard that imovie has a time-lapse option; i.e. you can set up the Capture to only grab 1 frame out of every 30. Does this work well? Can I come out of my camera with firewire into a laptop into imovie and just capture onto the hard drive without running tape? (Otherwise, I don't know how I could record 12 hours continuously).

VF0770 - Time lapse issue

Hi,
can someone help me figure out my issue with time lapse recording in Creative Live! Central 3?
I have no problem to capture normal video, but time lapse capturing is not working as expected. Doesnt matter what period of time I choose to capture. It always create only a small wmv file in destination folder. The lenght of video is around 1-2s only even if I select 30min or 1hour.

•JPEG is a highly compressed image format.
•DV PAL is a highly compressed video format -never more than 720x576 pixels. Your images are being renderd to this Timeline setting.
•When you view the Canvas in Final Cut pro, it always shows you a low res proxy image to better enable real-time playback.
Solutions:
Use TIFF or PNG images if you have them.
Render the Timeline.
Choose a higher res codec in FCP such as DVCPro or ProRes if your computer and FCP version support it.
View the output of Final Cut pro on a calibrated, broadcast quality monitor to see how things really look. An excellent quality consumer TV will go some way to giving you a idea of the quality if a broadcast monitor is not within your budget.

How to make a time lapse video in iMovie using a point and shoot camera?

I recorded an approx. 45-minute long video on my Canon point and shoot digital camera, then imported it on to my computer. (The file format is .MOV)
Now I would like to turn this video into a time lapse, of about a minute or two long. I know that iMovie HD has a time lapse feature, but it seems to only be for camcorders?
How can I import this .MOV file and turn it into a time lapse?

Kirk, I think Nancy wants to just take a frame from her video every minute or so, so that the 45 minute video runs for, say, 45 seconds.
I don't think she wants to "speed it up" and make it run at breakneck speed, but wants to put together frames taken at a particular interval ..e.g; one frame per minute.
I'm sure you know how best to do that using QuickTime. Any suggestions?
(..Otherwise, Nancy, choose a point in your video - using iMovie - about one minute into the video and then use 'Create Still Frame' (or ShiftApple'S') and make the new still frame just a few moments long ..repeat through your 45 minute movie. Drag all those 45 stills together and you have a time-lapse movie. You could make each of them one-and-a-half seconds long, and apply a half-second Cross Dissolve between each of them. You'd then have a less "stuttery" and smoother time-lapse video..)

Correct project settings for Brinno time lapse cameras?

I am totally new to all this so please forgive if an obvious answer. I have been doing a building project time lapse using some time lapse cameras by Brinno. They are the TLC200's (http://www.brinno.com/html/TLC200.html). I am about to start a new project to put together the final timelapse but have no idea what type project settings to start it as. They claim to record in 1280x720 HD and output a raw avi file of the time lapse sequence after filming (each frame i think is captured as jpeg). You pre set the number of frames it takes (eg 1 every 30 minutes like I have) and what frame rate it puts the sequence of individuale captures together and outputs to the avi file (I choose 10 fps). That is all the informatoin I have. Any ideas?

I want to overlay elapsed time for 30 hour time lapse onto 30 minute video.

Title says it all. I have 92k pictures that I've put into an ~30 minute time lapse video. The pictures came from about 30 hours of recording. I would like to add a clock to show the time on to the video. I have sequences broken up by hours of the day, so I could create one hour segments very easily.
I've tried playing around with the timecode filter, but it doesn't do what I want it to (or I can't figure how to make it do what I want it to do).

There isn't a built in clock effect in PrPro... timecode is the closest to it but probably won't work for what you want. After Effects may have one, but I'm not sure. There are probably some third party ones but I don't know of any off hand. Otherwise you may have to build and animate it yourself using titles or something like that. Again AE may help with that but I'm not certain. The time lapse part should be pretty easy. You can import them as image sequences if they're sequentially named, or else import them with a 1 sec default duration and add them to an appropriately sized sequence using automate to sequence or just by dragging and dropping.

Seeking advise on techniques for making a time-lapse movie

Hi, This isn't technically a question having to do with FCE directly, but it seems like a good place to ask. I need to make a time-lapse movie showing the changing daylight on a fixed point from dawn until dusk. It will be edited in FCE, but I have no idea of how many seconds I should shoot at a time, and at what intervals I should shoot them. Or.... would there be any advantage to shooting still photos and then importing them into FCE?
Can you suggest any resources which I could read on the subject?

Lets say you are doing this shoot at equinox (ie 12 hrs between sunrise and sunset).
Since most cameras do not hold storage media that can hold 12 hours of media in one file, you need to either use an intervalometer setting on the cam (allowing for incremental recording) or record to an external drive that CAN hold 12 hrs of media.
The approach one takes depends upon the recording limitations. If using external storage that can record the full length, it's just a matter of bringing in the file and speeding it up to whatever makes sense to your needs.
If you are going to use an incremental capture approach, then you really do need to know what will be the speed of the final clip. Is this thing going to play back at real time? 2x, 10x, 100x? Or, asked another way, how long do you want it to run? 30 sec, 1 min, 5 min, 20 min, etc?
Once you know that, it's really simple math to figure out.
Video (in NTSC land) runs at 30 frames per second (29.97 if we are being precise).
This means if you were to record it in real time you'd require 1,296,000 frames
12 hrs x (60 min per hr) x (60 sec per min) x (30 frames per sec).
If you want it to play 100x faster, you would need 12,960 frames. This can be accomplished by recording every 100th possible frame (that is, snapping an image every 3 1/3 seconds)
Or, if you work it backwards - thinking that you'd like to compress 12 hrs to 12 minutes, you'd need to acquire one frame every 2 seconds. (This yields a 60x increase in speed.)

Time Lapse Troubles...

     I'm a student and am getting into some more serious editing. I've been working on a snowboarding edit for this season however am having some troubles with my timelapse.
                    - Ok to start I would like to clarify, what would be the best program to create and edit a time lapse?
                                    I have photoshop cs5.5 extended, along with premiere pro and after effects.
                   - My next question is if Photoshop is the case, why is my sequence exporting in such a low quality?
                                   Basically I upload my 2500 11 MP pictures with a frame rate of 59.94 and an exporting settings of:
                                  After an hour of exporting I get a low quality 13 Mb mp4? Such as:
                                                                        (I did do HD cropping 1920 by 1080 px)
                    - What would be the best exporting settings for the work flow?
                             I have tried multiple file types however the only file that had relatively good quality was the .MOV. From my understanding that was just because they are not compressed files and                              the fact the final out put was 17 GB. I figured I would use an mp4 H.264 because that is what my camera (GoPro HD Hero 2) records in, and i figured that it would be the best format                              for later editing in premiere pro so it fits together. long story short what would be the best file output, for high quality and later editing.
                    -What is the difference between the multiple .mp4 file types etc.
                              For example in the video settings menu of the exporting settings there is Mp4 then Mp4 (ISMA) and then basic, improved, H.264 and so on.

I think you'd do better asking in the Premiere Pro and After Effects forums.   I understand that a common application for constructing a timelapse vide is Quicktime Pro, but After Effects will do it.

Time Lapse

Hi Gang
Without using any special setting on my DVX100B, I was simply going to let the camera roll for about an hour to film the set up and break down of a set.
During editing, increase the speed. Are there more effective ways to accomplish this? I believe time-lapse only captures a limited number of frames.
Does it really matter which method is employed?

Hi,
in principal there is no difference between letting a camera roll for an hour, or taking a series of stills over time (1 frame every 2-5 secs for example) and then gluing them together. Both are recording an event over a period of time and then compressing that timeframe afterwards, but you're right, the latter method does not capture all the action.
In practise though there is a world of difference in what you can achieve with the different methods. with the camera roll method (normally done with video cameras) you are obviously limited to the recording time of your camera, its recording method, and its photographic capabilities (shutter speed, image quality, dof etc). With stills timelapse (normally done with stills cameras) you potentially have a much more extended range of tools, more choice of lenses, exposure times, dof etc, and your recording time can be much, much longer.
In post, your video camera has the advantage of instantly being in the same format as the rest of your footage, but has the disadvantage of long clips, fixed resolutions (limiting repositions, blowups etc) looks a bit video, whereas with stills timelapses, once youve got your workflow sorted, you can be working with smaller files and get creative with pans and scans in motion and have beautiful filmic shots.
In your case (and depending on your aspirations for the project) on set, if you can afford to be without your video camera for an hour or so I would probably just let the camera roll as a quick and dirty one shot hit, speeding the clip up afterwards. But if you want to go for quality and get creative, start exploring the world of timelapses - heres a link to get you going

Any tips for editing an HDV time lapse?

I have done some extensive Googling on time lapse and understand the limitations of video as compared to film, and how most professional time lapsers use still cameras. Be that as it may, I am just having some fun with my new HDV camera and its built in time lapse/interval record feature.
What I would like to know is if there is an easy way or any tips/tricks for processing it? Being HDV, it has captured as several hundred 15-frame videos.
Any advice?
NB What I have tried so far is:
1. dumping all the clips onto the timeline (thank god they fall in order!)
2. changing the speed of the first one to 00:00:00:01 frame
3. pasting Attributes: Speed over the rest of them
(please don't laugh if this is a ridiculous method; I am very new to this!)

Just wondered as it might make sense if it was 15, as that is the GOP length for HDV, meaning that perhaps the camera records the pictures this way to ensure that you will have a complete 'i' frame... just a thought...

Capture Time Lapse from Canon HF100

I just bought a Canon Vixia HF100 camcorder. I want to connect it to my Macbook and record some time lapse footage in iMovie HD 6.
How can I do this? The camera doesn't have firewire support.

I probably am not the most qualified to answer this post but wanted to weigh in on this. I have done an enormous amount of research prior to purchasing my Canon HF100. First I got the camera but did not purchase the sd card at the same time so I sat there like a kid at christmas with a new toy and no batteries. Finally the card arrived 2 days ago. I wanted this camera because I needed better quality video over the JVC HDD. With everything pointing to AVCHD and everyone touting the quality and speed I thought this was my best move. 30 minutes of FXP video takes over 1 hour to import into iMovie08. I am not impressed with the video quality and do not know at this moment why the video, not the audio, freezes on playback in Quicktime or iMovie. If I could go back to the old school tape I would. Maybe I will change my mind in the next couple of days and if I do I will post it back here.
