Time Machine Causing Open Apps to Choke?
Have been using Time Machine for over a year with minimal problems. More recently, however, I'm noticing that often my open applications aren't responding and sometimes must force-quit them ... almost always Time Machine is doing its thing when this occurs.
If I see that TM is active, I sometimes will use the pulldown menu to stop the process. Even if it says, for example, "Backing up 260K of 8.6Mb" it takes at least 5 go 6 minutes for the backup process to cease. There have been times when I've walked away from the computer and returned 20 minutes later to see that it's still "stopping back up."
Also having more diffulty with accessing anything on my wireless network (mail, internet, printer) when TM is engaged in its backup.
All of this makes me wonder if I'm seeing corrupt files or faulty hardware ....
Any ideas?

NOW it seems to think I want it to do automatic hourly backups again.
It's like the creature that won't die in a horror movie. What's up with this thing?
You may have to do a "full reset", per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
p.s. I took it off auto backups simply to see if it improved my system's performance. So far, YES!
You shouldn't have to do that. Hourly backups shouldn't behave that way. It sounds like something else is wrong.
Have you ever used a 3rd-party app, or followed instructions to manually edit some "plists," to alter TM's default behavior? That might explain some of this.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs. Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs. Locate one of the backups in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

Time machine causes error message " Disk not properly ejected" with USB backup drive
I am using iMac OS X Lion and Time Machine causes the error message with a WD 1.5 TB drive in aThermaltake dock, USB. every time I wake up the computer.... Ejection of Time Machine and shut it down and turn opp power to drive causes the error message problem to disappear. What is the solutin?
If it were mine I would replace the drive with another brand. WD drives EHD's tend to have more issues than any other EHD. If you want to continue using it you can try resetting the SMC (may take 2-3 tries) and/or restarting in Safe Mode to reset some caches, it's possible one or more has become corrupt.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -
how do i reset my mac completely? I have parental controls and cant seem to get to time machine cause i bought the computer with parental controls on it and they did not have the password. How do i completely reset my macbook pro?
If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) on your account then the steps on this page will give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6170
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps on this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5620
Or, if it's available in your country, you could change to 2-step verification : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570 -
Does / can Time Machine cause external HD to lock up?
Pardon my ignorance on the matter here, but although I'm a longtime Mac-user, I've only just recently started using Time Machine.
I bought myself a dedicated 1TB external hard drive for the purpose and have left all Time Machine settings on default.
Most of the time it backs up everything fine, but lately I've had some weird experiences. It's happened on two occasions so far.
What happens is Time Machine appears to be backing up, according the rotating clock/arrow in my menubar, but if I do something which involves calling up this external hard disk into Finder view, it will lock up that application. By that what I mean is if I have a document open and I hit "Save As" and I get the window asking me where on my computer I want to save it. Obviously that window is a window to the Finder and it would ordinarily show me my own computer's directory structure, as well as giving me access to the directory structure on the external hard drive.
This "locking up" also occurs if I go into my Finder, which is behaving normally at this point, and I then attempt to click on the external hard drive showing in the sidebar of a Finder window to view that hard drive's contents. If I do that, then my entire Finder locks up.
And by locking up, I mean, I get the spinning beachball, and I can't do anything more from there. I can still Cmb-tab into other apps and use those, so long as I don't do anything with them that involves calling up or accessing that external hard drive.
The only way to get those locked up apps back is to literally pull the plug on the external hard drive, killing all power to it, and then plugging it back in. After a few seconds, the locked up apps come back to life and I get a standard pop-up window saying that the disk was not properly ejected, etc.
Once I've plugged the external drive back in, then everything goes back to normal, and the hard drive runs fine, as if nothing had ever happened.
Now I don't know who is at fault here: software or hardware? Time machine or the external hard drive?
With my experience of failing hard drives, they either work or they don't work. Very rarely do they "sometimes" work. And in those cases, there is usually an accompany "clicking" sound in the hard drive, indicating something's screwy.
I'm hearing none of that. The external hard drive is absolutely quiet.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? Any ideas as to who is at fault? Software or hardware?Brett Archibald wrote:

That's not the case anymore. Many problems reported here (slow backups, failing backups, drives dismounting unexpectedly) turn out to be external drive (or their power supply) problems. And if the problem is electrical, not mechanical, they don't make any unusual noise.
In such cases, unfortunately, the only way to tell if a drive is failing is to rule everything else out.
It does sound like you may have directory damage on the TM drive (which of course can be caused by an improper disconnection). When this happens, can you cancel the backup instead?
I'd suggest starting with a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on the TM drive, via Disk Utility.
If that doesn't help, do your backups seem to be of reasonable size, and take a reasonable amount of time? If not, that may be a contributor, if not the actual cause. Try the things in #D2 and/or D4 as appropriate, of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
If still no help, copy and post the +Time Machine Buddy+ messages here (see #A1 in the same Tip), along with details of your setup, especially the TM drive (make, USB/Firewire, separate power supply or not, direct connection or not). -
Does Time Machine backup open applications/files?
I recently lost my calendars (in Entourage, Ical, Mobileme, etc.), and wanted to restore from a time machine backup.
I tried to restore the Entourage identity from a day or two before only to see that the date in Time Machine for the file was way old.
I suspected that because I leave the app open all the time, particularly all night when my backups run at 11 pm that the file never got backed up. Does this sound right?
Ical, on the other hand (which is synched to mobile me and entourage), even though I rarely open it and use it, seemed to have the updated data.
How does Time Machine deal with files that are in use?Entourage needs some special handling. I don't use it, so can't tell you exactly how to do it, but if you search this forum for Entourage you should find a post or two (by Kappy and/or Baltwo, I think) with good advice.

Can't open documents in Time Machine using "Open with..."
When I'm viewing a document in Time Machine and I'd like to open it, I can't do so. I can use Quicklook on a .txt file, for instance, and in the top-right corner it says "Open with Textmate" (because I'm using Textmate to read .txt files), but clicking it does nothing. How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance!I apologize for stressing the point, but, again, can I ask why you're trying to go through Time Machine to get to your Reunion files? From your first post, it sounded as though you recovered everything from your backup (presumably you used the "Recover from TM backup" option when you installed the new hard drive?)
Does Reunion run normally when you launch it from your Applications folder (forgetting about Time Machine for a minute)? If so, do you have your current Reunion data somewhere in your Documents folder (or wherever you stored it before?) If not, and you believe you still have Reunion files in your backups, you should quit Reunion itself, then go into the Finder, go to the Time Machine interface, and locate your data file. Not the Reunion application, the family data file. Then recover that from the backup.
Again, the reason you're seeing what you're seeing through Time Machine is that TM is not "aware" of most applications (ie, you can't just launch any app, go to TM and expect that app's data to appear in the interface). It works for Mail, Address Book, iPhoto and the Finder. It's the Finder you're experiencing when you're going back in Time Machine, not Reunion itself. You just happen to be looking at the Reunion icon when you do so.

Use Time Machine to Migrate Apps or Re-Install Anew?
I bought a new 15" MacBook Pro a month ago and have used Migration Assistant to move all my files from my external drive, which were backed up from the old computer via Time Machine to this drive. I have been advised that this is a BAD IDEA, and that I should re-install my old software onto the new computer, and only use the migration assistant for moving DOCUMENT files to the new computer. Prior to receiving this advice, I had pro-actively reinstalled my entire Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection to this new computer's application folder, so the entire suite is installed on my new computer. The Creative Suite has now been installed on the new computer, and is also sitting on the new computer via the Migration Assistant process which brought EVERYTHING from the old computer to the new.
Should the Creative Suite Files in the Applications folder, which migrated via Migration Assistant, be REMOVED since they were already reinstalled on this new computer? Does anyone have some advice about this? I had heard that software should always be "REINSTALLED" as oppose to "copied" onto a new computer...
Thanks for any advice!!wait, i'm not understanding something.
you say that you installed (via install disc) your whole suite AND migrated your apps over, so you have a double installation???
i just wiped out my boot drive and re-installed everything manually (to clean up and prepare for LION upgrade, plus get rid of some apps...migration assistant brings EVERYTHING OVER, which is annoying, so the only way to leave stuff out was to start fresh and only install what i wanted).
the first thing you should do is open up each version of each application to see which ones the licenses are tied to. in some CS installs, you have to de-authorize a version before you can install another version. it's possible that one version will work and the other one won't.
in any case, i think having 2 versions in the app folder doesn't really matter, it just takes up extra space. you only want one version (whichever one works) anyway. in my particular instance, i have a site license, so i can install it wherever without the de-authorization problem.
i've succesffully migrated using migration assistant as well as copied a bootable clone back to my machine. it's definitely cleaner to do a fresh re-install, but i think it might be too late for that since you double-installed.
again, figure out which version works. if they both work, you could probably get rid of either one. all the plists and application support files, plug-ins should be for the migrated version if you accumulated those things over time before you mirated over. just make sure that those are tied to the version that works and get rid of the other. -

0 B Page-outsThe panic was apparently caused by "LittleSnitch," maybe with help from one or more of the other third-party system modifications you've installed. I suggest you remove it and also "Avast."
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
"Avast" is perhaps the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. Not only does it fail to protect you from any real danger, it throws false warnings, destabilizes and slows down your computer, and sometimes or always corrupts the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage, and neither will Disk Utility or even reinstalling OS X.
Back up all data, then remove "Avast" according to the developer's instructions. Restart.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and then follow the instructions linked above. -
Time Machine Restore Issues - Apps Unexpectedly Quitting
I have a 2009 iMac 21.5" 3.06 Ghz 8GB of RAM using 10.6.8
Recently my original Seagate Hard Drive started to fail (S.M.A.R.T. status: Failing). Luckily I caught it in time, had time machine back ups, and bought and installed new Hard Drive (WD WD1002FAEX) and restored my installation to the last Time Machine backup. (Dealing with the fan speed and noice, but that is a seperate issue)
Everything seems to have worked fine, but I am experiencing issues with Mail, Dashboard and Software Update unexpectedly quitting, when I use them.
Mail opened and imported all my mailboxes and info properly (it appears) but when I click on an email to view it, it quits giving me a crash report.
I have verified and repaired permissions and reset PRAM.
What else could I do to fix this issue?
Thanks,
RyanHere is the Crash Report I get if that helps:

Problems with Time machine caused by removing PKCS11.log?
I haven't yet found a solution to my Time Machine no longer backing up: "while an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk"
I requested help before, but so far nobody could help me solve this problem!
I noticed that I removed, in a file clean up, a log file: PKCS11.log."
I still have this file in the Trash but can not restore this file from Trash to its original location because I don't know its original location. The command" restore", or "put back" does not figure in the menu of Trash.
It can be that the removal of this log file causes the back up problem in Time Machine?
As you will notice from the above, I know very little about software and subjects like this and hope that somebody can help me to get Time Machine backing up again.
Thanks on beforehand!

Time Machine Causes MacBook to Drop Wireless Connection
Recently I started having tons of problems with my wireless connections (dropping after a few minutes, unable to reestablish)
The fix was to turn off Time Machine.
Help! How can I use time machine on my computer without it causing me to lose my wireless connections!
This affects my computer no matter what network I am on. As soon as Time Machine starts the backup I lose the connection to the wireless router.Recently I started having tons of problems with my wireless connections (dropping after a few minutes, unable to reestablish)

Time Machine Causes Lion to Completely Crash
To set the scene I have been working with Macs from System 7 onwards, I recently upgraded my i5 Macbook pro 13" to Lion.
I decided the other day to start using Time Machine. I have set it up before for other people and usually found it to be very straightforward. I previously just used to back up my data raw by doing flat file copies or DMGs when I felt like it.
I have a 500GB Toshiba USB 3 drive. Using Disk Utility I have erased the Dos partition and created a new GUID single partition, OSX Journaled.
Time machine sees the disk perfectly well and I allocate it to do the backups. They start as they are supposed to and begin to run.when they get to a certain point (which seems to be different each time) the machine locks up completely. The screen is frozen and the only way to continue is to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power key.
Since beginning to write this post I have also remembered I have had this before since upgrading when i was tryign to restore my iPhone.
Apart from that the computer is fine, no lockups or crashes. I used to get amazing uptimes from this one, 30 days etc so its quite dissapointing to be faced with this unreliability.
I have seen a few other posts suggesting a complete re-installaiton of OSX but this seems rather heavy handed for an application error. The rest of the OS is fine as far as I can tell (Except for these gestures driving me potty).
Any help with this woudl be great as it woudl be good to get more under the bonnet with Lion and see what makes it tick...or stop ticking as the case may be.
Look forward to hearing from you
Kind regards
GarethOK Here goes, I can make it crash on demand by starting Time Machine with the disk connected. Just to be belt and braces I initialised the disk again and created a new partition. It crashed and so here is the data you requested. I hope there is no personal info in here but the name of the computer is not too personal

Step 3 System Diag reports
Nothing present, I dont think the system has time to write a report because it has become completely bogged by this problem.
If you can shed any light on this I'd be really grateful. The thing I spotted right before the crash is the following line
(Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:1 for volume
Look forward to hearing from you

Time machine migration when apps on new computer are later versions
I have a time machine backup of my old macbook, just got a new one and it comes with iLife 11 preinstalled. I don't want these apps to be overwritten with my older (iLife 09) apps.
Should I rename them first, or delete the older apps off of time machine or is there any other way to make sure I don't get these overwritten.
(I imagine the iLife apps must be on the install disk in case I do have to reinstall iLife 11), but I don't have that currently, it was all installed at the university - hence I just want to know the quickest way to do this
Thanks!Pete Thomas wrote:
My problem was that I asked a specific question and was directed to an FAQ that was a different, much more general question:
Take a look at your first post -- there's no mention there that you'd done any research at all, or whether you'd already started up the new Mac. And it ends: "I just want to know the quickest way to do this."
"How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?" - not what I asked. FAQ 19 is mostly about how to use set up assistant which I already know and is irrelevant in this case as the installation had already taken place and therefore I cannot access Set Up assistant
You didn't mention any of that.
so the FAQ was telling me to reinstall or create a temporary account, time consuming and not very helpful when all I needed to be told was "you can run migration assistant and it will be fine", which was the very helpful and speedy advice I got elsewhere.
Again, that was far from clear in your first post. And the next sentence starts "After your Mac is up and running, you can use the similar Migration Assistant ..." with a link to that page. Many, many people start up their new Mac, skip +Setup Assistant,+ and create a new user account, and use it for a while. Then they run Migration Assistant and wonder where all their data is, and once they find the migrated account, want to consolidate the two. We see those roughly once a day.
After reading all the way to the bottom, there is a sort of answer to my question:
"Note that Setup Assistant is smart enough not to replace newer Apple apps that came with the new Mac with older versions from the old Mac or backups."
But then a caveat that confuses the whole issue for me:
"In some cases, there may be a few exceptions:" followed by lots of links to follow.
Should I have just ignored the fact that some apps aren't compatible with Snow Leopard? Or that in some cases you may have to re-enter serial numbers?
It would have saved us a lot of time, if you know the direct answer to the very specific question to say what the answer is rather than "read the FAQs". I'd already done a search to see if my question was frequently asked, and it wasn't.
Again, had you indicated that . . . -
Does Time Machine handle open DMG images?
System config:
- MacBook Pro w/10.6.8
- Time Machine backing up to external Firewire-connected 1TB drive.
To help protect some sensitive files, I have an encrypted and password-protected disk image on my MacBook in which I keep various files (mostly Word documents) containing private information. The DMG is named private.dmg, and is normally mounted r/w on my desktop so I can access the files and folders stored in its volume as required. (I mount it manually after logging on). Throughout the day, I may create new files or edit existing files that are stored in the private volume, which in turn is contained within the private.dmg file.
Recently, I needed to go back in time and recover an earlier version of one of the confidential files. Time Machine couldn't find the file with the date that that I needed (3 days ago). It appears that the files in the private volume are not getting backed up reliably to my external drive hourly/daily/weekly as per the Time Machine regimen. I would have expected the private.dmg file to get backed up by TM if/when any changes have been made to the files stored in its contained volume, but that seems not to be the case. If I enter Time Machine and go back in time, I find old versions of the private.dmg file as expected, but if I mount an older version and examine the contents, I don't see corresponding old versions of the files within.
Are there known limitations with this configuration? I know that TM can have problems with dealing with some open files, notably the Entourage database file. Perhaps TM fails to handle an open dmg image? Since the dmg file is essentially open all day (having been mounted), is it plausible that TM never backs it up Is there any way that I can ensure that Time Machine properly backs up the sensitive files in the mounted volume?
Thanks.@ Kiraly,
Thanks, I'm aware of that. I have been pursuing my TM archives by directly accessing the file structure on the TM volume (within the Backups.backupdb folder), locating the .dmg file with appropriate date, mounting it, and then looking on the mounted volume for the file I need to recover. (that's a lot faster than restoring each private.dmg file from within the TM application.
It appears to me that TM is not properly saving the state of the open .dmg file when it does its hourly backup. Perhaps it doesn't see changes made to files within the volume. Perhaps it just wasn't designed to handle .dmg files that OS X has open for R/W access.
I should mention that my dmg volume is a sparse image. I wonder if that complexity is sufficient to mess up TM.
