Time Machine Stopped Automatic Backup

Backing up to a capsule.
It's not backing up automatically, despite saying that it is.
Also, I need to constantly keep telling it where the capsule is; it keeps forgetting it's there.
Any tips?

nope, not shutting anything down. Time machine goes on automatically when i turn on the laptop and the capsule is always on. It might have something to do with this other annoying thing TM is doing, saying that all the back-ups took place at 07:55 - any ideas?

  • Time machine stopped automatic backups - works fine manually

Hi there - I checked but didn't see this issue addressed anywhere:
    - I am using Time Machine wirelessly connected to an external drive through an Airport Extreme
    - Previously, once I "helped" the mac recognize that the drive existed (I seemed to have to do this every time I woke the macbook up from sleep), it would happily backup every hour.
    - But, now, it will not back up unless I manually go to the menu bar and select "backup now". Then it does fine, but I shouldn't have to remember to do it all the time, should I?
Anything I can do to get this back to automated?
    Thanks,
    Dan

Hey Dan - I found your post because I was having the same problem. I don't know if you've already resolved the issue. While mine was self-inflicted, I'm wondering if this solution will work for you, too.... there is a free application out there called Time Machine Editor that lets you custom schedule Time Machine backups. It "updates a system configuration file to change the Time Machine scheduling." I'd forgotten that I'd downloaded it and played around with it and it was overriding the schedule.... You can install it, revert the settings to default and then delete it and apparently, it's completely uninstalled...or customize your schedule and hang on to it... I hope that helps! Let me know...

  • Time Machine - stops the backup

    Hi,
I am trying to do a Time Machine backup, but it stops at some point (after around 800 MB). I already tried three different USB drives, including one with former TIme Machine backups. What should I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pedro.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Time Machine stopped doing backups

All of a sudden, Time Machine won't do any more backups. I'm not getting any error messages or anything like that - it's just not backing up automatically. My last backup was OVER an hour ago. I can do a 'Back Up Now' manually, and it will work. But the *automatic* backups simply will not happen. Why is it doing this, and how can I fix it?
Yes, I've read that Pondini thing, but nowhere in it does it mention what to do if TM just decides not to automatically back up anymore.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy into the Terminal window — do not type — and press return:
sudo launchctl list | grep backupd
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Anyone else with Macbook Pro that keeps logging out in Time Machine, stopping the backup?

    Okay
My backup drive bit the dust, big time, so I got a fresh external, but cannot get Time Machine to work.
13" Macbook Pro keeps terminating Time Machine and logging out when on power cord when going to screen saver.
I've set the screen saver to start after NEVER, the computer and display sleep to NEVER in Energy Saver, as I have it on an external monitor.
Still does not stay logged in.
    Any other ideas?
I seriously need to back up.

  • Stopping automatic backups

    Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could please tell me if it's possible to stop Time Machine doing automatic backups as it's doing them about three or four times a day and it's getting a little frustrating? If possible, I'd like to be able to manually choose to do them once a week.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Stu

    Agree with all the post below;
I would STRONGLY reccomend that you back up regularly though; the longer you leave it, the more data you WILL loose.
Also there are 'problems' with time machine, in that longer perioeds without back up, can take a long time, if it backs up on its own every hour or so, it will run quite happily in the background, and be very quick.
Dont worry about radio waves, WiFi is very low powered, and do a 'search networks' and see how many others are 'live' all around you anyway; as for 3g/mobile phones that is whole other discussion, and you certaily can not switch those networks off !

  • Time Machine does manual backups but not automatic.

Time Machine skips automatic hourly backups but will do a backup if I click "Backup Now".  Any idea why automatic backups are not working and how to enable them?  Thanks.

  • Time Machine stop at 150mb of backup data.

    Hello!
I have a Western Digital MyBook Live 2TB (only ethernet) and when Time Machine starts to backup data it stops at 150mb. Then the "time-to-backup" shows 5 days left but dont increase the mb of the data transferred.
I tryed it wired and wireless. I tryed removing .inprogess file but dont work.
My macbook is a Late-2008 unibody model.
    Anybody can help?
    Thank you!

Using a third-party network device with Time Machine is unsupported by Apple, and may be unsafe. If it doesn't work, your only recourse is to the device vendor, who will blame Apple. Apple will blame the vendor. I suggest you back up either to a locally-attached external hard drive, or to a Time Capsule, or to a shared volume hosted on another Mac.

  • Time Machine not showing backups

Time Machine stopped backing up earlier this month and I have done numerous things to get backups again. Yesterday after upgrading memory on my iMac, not as a fix for Time Machine, I restarted Time Machine and it appeared to be backing up just fine. This morning when I looked at Time Machine preferences it does not display oldest or latest backup and when I open disk it shows 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress and if you look inside package it appears to have backups all the way back to when I started Time Machine back up. I have reformatted the drive during the process of trying to get backups working again and run disk utility and drive checks out fine. When it does a backup it shows progress bar and when complete tells when next backup is. I browsed through the folders in the 2015-01-24-083208.inProgress package and they do appear to be complete backups.

  • Time Machine making full backups--not incremental

    Hi,
I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro a couple of days ago, and have been using Time Machine to make backups (never used it before now). I have TimeMachineEditor installed, and have it set to make a backup daily at 3:30am. It backs up data from my 500GB main hard drive to another internal 500GB hard drive.
The first backup went without a hitch, and did a full backup as expected (everything). But the second, third, and fourth backups all were full backups as well....not incremental as they should've been. The fourth one was actually a manual backup I did to test it...I chose "Back Up Now" to see if it did full or incremental. It did a full backup.
So, after four backups, each a little over 100GB, I'm already running out of space Has anyone else run into this behaviour? Is this a consequence of TimeMachineEditor having screwed it up somehow? Even if it has, shouldn't a manual backup still do an incremental backup?
    Very strange....

lol...well, seeing as how you'll clearly be here a while then... ...perhaps I can prevail upon you to answer one last question that just occurred to me.
Let's say I have tons of TM snapshots on my backup drive, and at some point I want to delete a few to clear some space. I know TM automatically goes after the earliest ones when the drive fills up,
You should know that TM also constantly thins recent backups. It keeps hourly backups for 24 hours and then deletes all but one for every day; it keeps daily backups for 30 days and then deletes all but one for every week. it keeps all weekly backups till the TM drive gets full at which point it starts deleting the oldest ones.
but let's say I manually want to delete a few snapshots that contain, say, a massive cache file or something totally useless to keep around, which I could afford to delete and would gain me a lot more drive space.
When I go into the TM interface to do the removal, how can I figure out which snapshots to get rid of? How would you do it?
TM offers two options. you can delete an entire backup corresponding to a time point or it can delete all backups of a given file/folder. to do that enter TM and scroll back in time to some time point. select something and click on the "gears" action button in Finder toolbar. you'll see options "delete backup" (deletes the entire backup for that time point), and 'delete all backups of this item". deletes all backups of the selected item from all time points. I use the latter sometimes to get rid of backups of very large files.

  • Time Machine Folder-Specific Backup

    Hello all,
I have a new external hard drive that I want to use as a Time Machine backup drive. I want Time Machine to only backup 4 folders. Documents, Movies, Music, and Pictures. I just want the data in those folders to be backed up. No system backups, preferences, applications, etc... I just want those 4 folders and their contents, but I'm seemingly unable to figure out how. Thank you!

    Yeah I kinda figured.
If I backup everything, when I do a restore, it will restore everything including all the system files etc.
that would only be if you do full system restore. you can easily restore any individual files you want without restoring the whole system. nothing is stopping you there. full system backups gives you flexibility to go with either option and there is never a worry that you forgot to back up something. for example, you mentioned only
Documents, Movies, Music, and Pictures. what about your Mail data? your address book data? your passwords, your bookmarks? you don't want any of these?
The advantages of installing a fresh copy and just re-installing the applications one needs is advantageous. Furthermore, when one does a full system restore its usually because things weren't going well, so to decide at which backup point it is better is subjective. I think time machine is great for retrieving files deleted by accident and/or having it automatically backup new pictures, movies, music, etc...
Are you familiar would you recommend "Backup 3.1" it's available to MobileMe users.
I don't use Mobile me so I'm not familiar with Backup.

  • Time Machine stops backing up external disk

I have 907 GB of backups on my WD 1 TB backup disk. Further backups blocked. Tried unsuccessfully to erase disk with utility. Support item MAC OS X 10.5 ("Time Machine stops backing up on external disk") gave instructions for partitioning the back up disk: "Partition failed could not unmount disk" Ran disk utility again. Verified and ran repair to backup disk. Response is that partition is okay. Have heard that Mountain Lion can cause backup problems. Anybody help please?

You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up but doesn't give warning/error

    Hi,
by chance I noticed, that Time Machine doesn't backup up any more, but still doesn't give errors.  In Console I see the following for a now typical run:
    21.04.15 09:58:11,493 com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
    21.04.15 09:58:12,043 com.apple.backupd: Backing up to: /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb
    21.04.15 09:58:41,729 com.apple.backupd: 5.18 GB required (including padding), 96.84 GB available
    21.04.15 09:58:55,149 com.apple.backupd: Copied 23 files (93 bytes) from volume Macintosh HD.
    21.04.15 09:59:04,385 com.apple.backupd: Copied 36 files (93 bytes) from volume DATA.
21.04.15 09:59:06,100 mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume
    21.04.15 09:59:06,102 com.apple.backupd: Starting post-backup thinning
    21.04.15 09:59:07,668 com.apple.backupd: Deleted /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb/drosera/2015-04-20-183344 (24.0 KB)
    21.04.15 09:59:07,668 com.apple.backupd: Post-back up thinning complete: 1 expired backups removed
    21.04.15 09:59:07,762 com.apple.backupd: Backup completed successfully.
The 5.18 GB are never backed up.  The backup drive (drosera-backup-02) is attached by FireWire.  I have checked the disk with First Aid, I have disconnected and reconnected it.  I removed the backup disk from Time Machine, stopped TM and reconfigured.  I stopped mds, ran backups and reenabled mds.  All to no avail.
I am at a complete loss and I'd appreciate to get this running w/o having to remove all existing backups.  Any ideas or pointers?
I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a Mac mini
    Cheers
    Frank

Thx.  I had already tried the hints from mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume to no avail.  Your tip to rebuild the Spotlight index would probably helped, too.  But just before getting yout comment and after reading http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html and http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/69054/force-time-machine-to-perform-a-d eep-traversal I had simply removed /.fseventsd and reran a backup.  That seems to have fixed the problem (at least for the time being).
Interesting side note: During the non-backup phase I created a new account on the Mac and ran TM.  This triggered a one-time working backup of the whole system, but all subsequent backups again failed silently.  Additionally the externally attached FireWire harddrive was always backed up correctly, only backups of the local drive failed.

  • Time machine not automatically backing up to sparsebundle

    Used TimeTamer to create sparsebundle.
    Manual backups work fine.
Receive message that "time machine destination not resolvable" when automatic backups are tried.
    Is this issue correctable?
    Thank you

I am backing up to a 1st generation Drobo.
All I know about Drobos is what I read on their site and some threads here.
How is it connected?  Network (Ethernet or WIFI) or direct (USB, Firewire, eSATA)?
The reason for doing so is to limit the amount of space my Time Machine backups will take up.
Depending on how you're connected, there may be a better way.  Are you still running 10.6.8?  Note that on some models, Drobo says not to use that with Leopard or Snow Leopard (http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/610/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzI 2NzcyMDg3L3NpZC9NZFN1TWtPaw%3D%3D).
According to this page: http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/609/~/how-do-i-make-time-machin e-work-with-drobo%3F, some models of Drobo allow you to create partitions.  If yours will, that's the way to go.
Then let Time Machine create a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of the volume if you're connected directly, or it's own sparse bundle if you're connected via network.
If not, and if you're connected via network, you may be able to let Time Machine create the sparse bundle, then limit the maximum size via #A8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
    hdiutil create -size 8192g -fs HFS+J  -volname "TM-backup-of-****-*****-mac-pro" /Volumes/Drobo/****-*****-mac-pro_001f5b32e8e4.sparsebundle
Some possible problems with that (I can't tell since you substituted ***s):
Check the names (of all odd things) of your Mac, network, and Drobo per #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  The names may be a problem even if you let Time Machine create the sparse bundle.
As I read the man page for hdiutil, that command will not create a sparse bundle disk image with a maximum size of 8 TB; it will create a fixed-size disk image of 8 TB.
Since 10.6.0, Time Machine no longer includes the source Mac's MAC address in the name of the sparse bundle.  I don't know if having it there is a problem in your setup.
Have you used any other 3rd-party apps (such as Time Machine Editor, or Time Machine Scheduler) to alter Time Machine's default behavior?

  • Time Machine NOT automatically backing up - Help

Running 10.5.2 on my MBP and MB. Have a TC 500 installed yesterday. Did the initial backup on both. Seems that Time Machine will not backup to TC unless I click on TC in my finder (to mount). If I restart or sleep the computer or switch networks (and come back to TC) TM doesn't backup. Been 3 hours since I've been back on the TC. Is there something I need to set up to get the computer to automatically back up without me having to tell the computer the TM designated disk is available. Thanks.
    Sean

I hope this helps you...I just spent 3 hours on the phone with Apple Care and finally got the problem fixed. The problem was the NAME OF THE time capsule. I had used "Tony Ry*****'s Time Capsule" (I used xxxxx because I prefer not to use my whole last name on here). In any event, the name was too long! I changed it to "TimeCapsule" in Airport Utility. To do this, launch Airport Utility, click on "Manual Setup". Under the "Disks" section, you will see the name of your time capsule listed under "Time Capsule Disk" . Click on that, and to the right a white dialogue box will appear where you can change the name. Change it to something short with no spaces, or " ' " . After doing that you will need to go into the time machine preferences and select a new backup disk (since you changed the name). This worked perfect for me. Hope it helps you!
