Time setting loses time

A long while ago I set the time on my iPod Classic 160GB.
For reasons too complicated to explain, the iPod was not used for several months. It had a fully charged battery before it was left idle. Although we've had the iPod for a while, it has not been used that much at all - I did calibrate the battery when we first got it.
The time is wrong by more than an hour (and I have taken the change to daylight savings time into account).
Does this say something about the quality of my battery?
Any suggestions on what to do?
Reset the correct time and see what happens?
Try to use the iPod more even if we aren't really listening to it? (we purchased it expressly for use while traveling - to hook up to mini speakers for hotel listening.)

The battery might not be at the same capacity as when it was new, but it should be pretty long-lasting. You haven't used many charge cycles.

I'm under the impression that the iPod Classic synchronizes with your computer's clock when you connect it (and the manual for my 120gb backs that up), so connecting it to your computer should correct the time.

The iPod Classic is designed to hold your entire music collection and can be used with many accessories to play while traveling, while at work, while in the car, and while at home in different locations of the house, but it's up to you how you choose to use it.

I live in Canada.  Each time I travel to the US, I lose all calendar entries.  I have to erase all data, then restore from an iCloud backup.  Tedious.  iPhone 4, iOS 7.1, sync set to all events.  I only use the default calendar.  Do I have an incorrect setting?

I did find another point worth mentioning.
I use my iPhone 4 with a corporate Exchange email account.  I had deleted the account from my phone just before I did this backup/restore process...and I thought my battery drain was much, much better (if not outright fixed).
Later in the day, after seeing my battery life improve to near-new behavior, I re-added my Exchange mail account.  Considering I have 1 yahoo account and 3 gmail accounts, the Exchange account adds a 5th email account.
What happened?  Battery drain back to "worst case".  Removing or re-adding the Exchange account is like toggling between decent and terrible drain conditions.
Bottom line is that I re-added a couple dozen applications and battery life didn't change.  By far, the Exchange account drains the battery worse than any other app and setting.  This account must be polling very frequently and since people tend to send very large file attachments to that account, perhaps those effect the battery drain even though I have the account set to not download attachments.
Anyone running Microsoft Exchange might be able to confirm what I see?  If so I can open an enterprise ticket with Microsoft and bug them on this issue.

  • I want to set up Time Machine for my Macbook pro but I already have files on my seagate hard drive. Will i lose them if i set up time machine on it ?

So i have a 2 TB Seagate time machine. I had an older laptop that I had transfered things from onto that about 2 years ago. My current macbook has been acting up so i want to set up time machine. Will i lose everything on the hard drive if i try to set it up as time machine now?
I read about partioning it.. but Im still scared i will lose what is  on it?
My macbook is about 2 years old running OS.X 10.9.1
    Please advise.

Partitoning can be done on the fly.
However TimeMachine works best if it is Partition 1.
If you formate and repartition then yes you lose everything.
    How about getting another drive.

  • Lose Time Capsule Setting When Powering Off

The last couple of times that I've turned off my Time Capsule, when I turn it back on I lose all my settings and have to reset everything again. I've had it about two months and it never used to do that when I first got it. Something to note is that this first started when we had a power failure - so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it. It works just fine once I set it up again, so it does not look like it's been damaged, but with these things you never know!
Anyone know what might be going on here - or better yet, how to fix it? Thanks for any info.

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for the info. I understand what you mean about not turning it off, it's just that sometimes I won't use the wireless for a few days at a time - so I figure to save power, just turn it off. I guess I'll have to reconsider that. Also, since I don't have time machine set to auto back up, I thought this would work best. I usually just turn it on every few days to back up anything important.
Another thing is that I also have an airport extreme which I have connected to extend the network and have had no problems with that, even though it also does not have a on/off switch.
Yes, I know how to save my configuration and that helped me the first time that I had this problem. However, when I turned everything back on today, I could not find my configuration this time so I thought that was also pretty strange.
Any thoughts about all that? Thanks again for your help.

  • I lose my internet connection on my ATV2 with the last update the network works but the ATV´2 can´t set Date and Time

Since friday I update my ATV 2 trough my Mac on that day, the device show me that it is connect to the network, all my anothers devices are working well with my wifi connection, I made some test, enter to my router config as another forums talkking about of the same trouble with the ATV, I´m so fustated than after made everythig that is possible to do I can´t fix the trouble, I can´t don´t back to the previus ATV version, when I try to enter to the Home Sharing or Itunes store the message are that I not conected to the internet and I have to setup date and time, I check the data and time on my dlink router and everything are ok there, ANY IDEA I´M TIRED to try to fix it all the day, reading blog making resets and everything possible, maybe I jump some stage.
By the way the Aiplay is working on my network.
    Best Regards

    Ok thanks again
Yes I try Ethernet cable from the ATV to the router
I check the signal using the istumbler and the internet speed that I have on my anothere devices likes iphone, Ipad and my MacBook Pro the levelo istrubler screen is high.
This is something that I doesn´t ry how I can configurate the port 123 on my router that is a DLINK, I set the time on my router tool page 192.168.0.1 and unchek the firewall as recomended on anothers old post.

  • Need help big time. I need to change my apple ID but the original email address I set it up under is no longer used so i can't get my proper password sent to me. I don't want to set up a new account and lose all my old apps I have purchased.

need help.  Before I set up my I-pad i need to regain access to my I-Tunes account, easy enough. The problem is I cannot re-set password.  I have tried to re-set and send to my designated email but it does not work. How can i get someone from Apple on the phone to help?

Have you forgotten your password? - if so, you have a problem if the email address has gone dead.
If you know your password, go to the iTunes Store, click on Account. log in and you can change the associated email address.
If you don't know your password, and have no email address, you are going to have problems because it's difficult to see how Apple are going to identify you as the authorised owner of the account. Contact iTunes Support: go to http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ - click on 'Other iTunes Store Features' in the list and then on 'Podcasts'. You will see a link to either 'Express Lane', which will guide you eventually to some contact options, or you may see a link to email them.

  • External backup solution - help

    Hi all,
I currently have 2 x 160Gb drives in my G5. One is my boot drive, which holds everything and the other drive i clone using CCC when i feel the need to.
I have just started editing DV movies using iMovie and storage is becoming a problem. i want to purchase some new drives to sort out my system and still a backup when i want to, or use the schedule fuction in CCC.
I believe i am correct in thinking i should have one drive for my system and programs the other for my data (documents, movies folder,iTunes lib etc)?
I am thinking of buying another 2 external firewire drives or an enclosure to hold 2+ drives in. I would use one of these external drives for my raw DV and a scrach disk for PS CS.
Am i on the right lines here? What would be the best way of backing up all these drives so i can still boot if my system drive goes down and i have backups of all my data?
It seems the best solution would be to replace the 2 x internal drives with bigger ones (250Gb) then use the 2 original 160Gb drives in the external FW enclosure.
I am also thinking of upgrading to Tiger before i do this.
    Any advise would be great,
    Thanks.
    Rob

I currently have 2 x 160Gb drives in my G5. One is my boot drive, which holds everything and the other drive i clone using CCC when i feel the need to.
Good your cloning your boot drive. The problem is your cloning to another internal drive, so your tying up a very fast interface with a clone that you hardly access. It would be best to have the clone of your boot drive on a external drive and keep it disconnected. This way if you get hacked or your machine gets fried at least a copy of your boot drive is safe.
I don't agree with partitioning a drive with apps, boot, files seperate, this was for the OS 9 days with no auto-defragmentation. Now it's a performance problem.
I keep nothing in my spare space on my boot, rather having it for expansion of the OS/apps or a temporary holding area. Running up against the limit of a partition is about the worst thing possible.
I have just started editing DV movies using iMovie and storage is becoming a problem. i want to purchase some new drives to sort out my system and still a backup when i want to, or use the schedule function in CCC.
You should check out (search Apple) for DejaVu, it's a System Preference Pane that will auto-clone and auto-backup even when your logged out. Very simple, select the folder/drive, set the time and select the destination.
I believe i am correct in thinking i should have one drive for my system and programs the other for my data (documents, movies folder,iTunes lib etc)?
Yes this is a substantial performance option, you keep a OS/boot/"bare bones" home drive (w/iTunes music) kept below 50% filled and then keep your space hogging files like documents, pictures and (especially) movies in NEW folders on the second internal drive.
This way the boot drive stays optimized, it stays below 50% filled as anything more starts to affect performance. Since iTunes constantly accesses the drive with small files in a random fashion (music shuffle), it's best to keep these files on the boot drive which the OS also accesses the drive the same way. The object is to keep the hard drives arm traveling in a small tight area. Since drives write data from the outside edges of the platters working inwards, for performance a boot drive should be comprised of a lot of little files randomly accessed.
With files drives they tend to read large data, the arm moves and the file is read in one big swoop. So one can fill these up, but still performance will start to suffer after 50%. Hard drive caches only help with writes under 16MB. Anything more than that or reads, depends upon the mechanical performance of the arm moving the heads across the platters. Which is the performance bottleneck.
Now faster spinning platters and faster moving arms do help considerably with performance. If you install a 150GB 10,000 Western Digital Raptor as a boot drive you'll see the performance difference right away.
Large 7,200 RPM drives more than 50% filled as boot drives are a performance nightmare. So many people complain their "Quad" is slow and the biggest cause is people buy these huge drives for boot, taking large storage space over performance. Apple should provide a Raptor as a boot drive as a BTO option, but of course a slower machine will make you want to upgrade sooner.
When you have your files on the file drive it can be read at the same time as the OS drive. Which adds another performance benefit.
I am thinking of buying another 2 external firewire drives or an enclosure to hold 2+ drives in. I would use one of these external drives for my raw DV and a scratch disk for PS CS.
Ok if you upgrade to CS2 the 2GB memory limit for Photoshop is overridden, so you most likely won't need a "scratch disk", work in RAM is 40% faster than a drive.
Your on the right track, but a larger boot drive will slow your computers performance.
My suggestion is to do this:
1: Buy Tiger and iLife '06 (it's not included)
2: Buy a Firmteck 4 ports in/4 ports out SATA PCI card.
    3: Buy a 150 GB 10,000 RPM Raptor
4: Buy a Lacie 250 GB Firewire 800/400 external drive.
5: Buy a four drive external SATA enclosure.
6: Buy 2-4 internal SATA drives for the enclosure.
C boot from the Tiger install disk and select Disk Utility>Erase w/Zero the Lacie and format HFS+ (journaled) and install Tiger on that, setup using the same name as your Panther drive. Do not use Migration Assistant!
Option boot from your Lacie/Tiger and visit all your drive makers sites and download any driver updates so Tiger will work with your other drives. Run them when you connect a drive.
Install the FirmTech card in your PCI slot. Supposedly slot 2 and 3 are shared, so perhaps you should use slot 4. This card is going to get a lot of work.
Remove your internal hard drives and install the Raptor connecting the SATA to the Firmteck internal port. This is important because WD drives have improved SATA specs and the G5's don't. Reboot from the LaCie and run Disk Utility Erase w/Zero on the Raptor. Run any Firmtec software if you need too.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner (Tiger version!) to clone your LaCie to the Raptor. Disconnect the LaCie and reboot from the Raptor and repair permissions.
Ok now your up on the Raptor, install your apps from original disks/sources, cherry pick certain apps from the Panther drive. Take this time to clean house. If you screw up, simply reverse clone from the LaCie and start over.
Replace your iTunes folder in the same exact spot (pathname) on the Tiger/Raptor drive as it was on the Panther drive. Rename the Panther drive and set the name of the Tiger/Raptor drive to the original name of the Panther drive. This way your iTunes playlists should be preserved as the playlists contain the pathnames to the songs. If not you'll have to edit your iTunes XML file with "find/replace".
Grab your Library/Mail your Library/Safari bookmarks from the Panther drive.
Once you cleaned out the Panther drive, clone the Tiger/Raptor to the LaCie for safekeeping and Erase w/Zero the Panther drive. It will now become your file drive, keep your drive hogging stuff here that you use over time.
Now onto your external enclosure, you can place the extra SATA internal drive in here, or keep it as a third clone f your boot drive.
Place what SATA drives you want into the 4 bay enclosure, connecting one drive to one port on the outside of the FirmTec card. Erase w/Zero as usual each drive.
Now you can set two identical drives in the enclosure as a RAID O set in Apple's Disk Utility, this would make a excellent "scratch disk" or "working disk" as your speed is greatly improved, especially if you use 10,000 RPM drives.
You can place a huge 7,200 RPM SATA drive in one of the enclosures drive bay for auto-backup of files from the RAID O using the DejaVu software.
RAID O (stripe) can be risky as the data path is split between each drive in the set, lose one drive and all your data on the RAID O is gone.
Don't use "mirror" (RAID 1) for backup because any corruption or accidents get immediatly written to the second drive in the mirror. Use Auto-cloning (for boot drives) or Auto-backup software instead.
So you have a lot of options, with all the drives being used and the LaCie for a clone of your boot drive for emergencies. You'll have a performance working disk if you need it, as well as all around performance of your machine for many years to come.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/firmtek/1eve4/
You can also test your drives performance (roughly) using X-Bench

  • Setting up an Airport Express with a Time Capsule

Merry Christmas! I received a new Airport Express for Christmas. My intention is to use it to stream music to my stereo. I have to admit that setting the AE up was not as simple as I had hoped it would be. I do have it working but I would like someone with more experience in this area to validate what I have done.
My wife and I each have MacBooks and we have a Time Capsule as our base station in the den. I would like to use the AE to stream music to my stereo which is in the living room. I would also like the AE to act as a "booster" to my TC, which I think is called "Extending a wireless network".
Here are my questions concerning the settings I have used in Airport Utility:
In TC, under AirPort, and the Wireless tab, I have checked the box for "Allow this network to be extended". Is that necessary?
In AE, under Airport, and the Wireless tab, there are a number of choices in the pulldown for Wireless Mode. I know I do not want to "create a wireless network" since that is what my TC is for. But all three other choices seem valid for what I want to accomplish -- Participate in a WDS network, Join a wireless network, or Extend a wireless network. I chose Extend a wireless network. I also checked the box under Network Name that says, "Allow wireless clients". Are these settings correct?
Here's the problem I'm having with things set up as I described above. AirTunes works fine. But if we close either of the MacBooks (put them to sleep) and open them in the living room which is closer to the AE, we seem to lose internet connectivity. When we open a browser or click on a link, it starts to load but then freezes. If I then walk the MacBook into the den, closer to the TC and restart the Airport or put it to sleep and wake it, its fine. Also, if we work long enough in the living room closer to the AE, it will also loose connectivity. I can sit in the den near the TC without any dropping.
Any suggestions on what the proper Airport Utility settings should be for my TC and AE would be greatly appreciated.

Your biggest mistake is confusing signal strength with signal quality. The signal indicator indicates strength and nothing else. You need to be using iStumblr to look at SNR (Signal to noise ratio).

  • I want Firefox to open to my homepage every time after it crashes. I do not want it to return to the tabs and applications that caused the crash. I am willing to lose information. How do I do this?

Firefox crashes or seizes up when there are too many tabs and applications open, and causes my computer to crash or seize up. I use task manager to close Firefox or I restart my computer. Then, when Firefox restarts again, it automatically re-opens all the tabs and applications that caused the computer to seize or crash in first place. This is a waste of my time. I want Firefox to reopen to my homepage even if it crashes. I am willing to lose information to have Firefox reopen to a low-memory homepage. How do I do this?

Set the Integer pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes
That will allow you to deselect the tab(s) that you do not want to reopen, but will allow to reopen other tabs.
    See:

    * https://wiki.mozilla.org/Session_Restore#Preferences
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold (user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default via the right-click context menu if they are user set

  • Purchased a new Apple TV and the remote double clicks each time I press the button. It worked fine during set up and for the first two days.  I have since moved it and this problem started. Restarted, reset, unplugged, change remotes, no change.Help please.

Purchased a new Apple TV and the remote double clicks each time I press the button. It worked fine during set up and for the first two days.  I have since moved it and this problem started. Restarted, reset, unplugged, changed remotes, no change. Latest software update. This is really annoying.  iPhone remote app works just fine.  Any suggestions?

That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it...

  • Please help - Time Capsule Set up problems

I bought a Time Capsule almost a year ago at the same time as my iMac, but have only tried to set it up in the last 3 weeks (so its the 6"x6"x1" version).  I followed the set up instructions numerous times but kept getting an error message in Airport Utility. I rebooted my broadband and tried the factory reset of the TC.
Eventually I contacted Apple and after repeating everything whilst they were on the phone, they made an appointment for me at the Genius Bar to have the TC checked over. The Apple rep was able to access the TC using the internal Apple network and a normal port but had the same problem I did using the WAN connection so deemed the item faulty and replaced it.
My new TC is exactly the same and this time Apple advised me to ask my BB provider if there were any firmware updates required or reasons why I would be having problems. They also checked that I had the latest iMac software and Airport Utility. BT (my BB provider) went through a series of tests and concluded that my BT Home Hub 3 was faulty and have replaced it.
So now I have a new Home Hub 3 and another new TC and I've still got the same problem. I only want to use the TC for backing up my iMac with Time Machine but Id like to do it wirelessely. Can someone please tell me what I should do next as I can't believe its still down to faulty products.

I have just been watching Internet traffic on my McAfee security software on my BB and it shows that my router and TC both have a green light for access through the firewall, until Airport Utility gets to the point in its routine where it shows 'joining to the TC' and then my router loses access to the Internet and gets a red light as connection lost. Is that normal, and/or does it help diagnose what the problem might be?

  • I lose a bunch of tabs when I exit Firefox, even though I click for it to save the tabs for next time I open it

When I use Firefox, I usually have a bunch of tabs open. Sometimes I have a tab open as a reminder to look further into the subject, or I plan on going back to it to finish reading whatever it was. Before, if my computer would restart due to updates, when I started Firefox up again, it would say "Well...this is embarrassing" and allow me to reopen all the tabs I once had. This no longer works. I was even able to close Firefox through the Task Manager on windows, and have the same result. Now this doesn't happen. So I tried to close it and it asked to save my tabs for the next time I open Firefox. It doesn't save them, as it's always just my homepage and I never see an option to recall the old tabs. I even set the settings to "When Firefox starts: Show my windows and tabs from last time." This also does not work. I'm getting tired of having to remember all over again what sites I had up. Usually they aren't something that I need bookmarked, so that's why I don't do it. Also, it would really clutter my bookmarks if I did. Please help.

Thanks for the reply. I never get the option to "Restore Previous History" from History. I don't even have the box checked that asks to delete the history when Firefox closes. I don't know what's wrong, no matter what, I always lose everything. I have the box marked "Show my windows and tabs from last time" for when I open Firefox, but it never shows that, just my homepage. Also, when I check my History, it only shows the pages that I opened since I started Firefox, nothing from before. Even if I were to open up 10 pages now, close Firefox, and open it, the history would only show the homepage that opened this time, not any of the 10 pages that I opened 5 minutes ago.

  • Setting up Air play with new time capsule and newer airport express?

I just recently purchased a new time capsule, and I'd like to use my current generation airport express to stream music from my apple devices. I just was wondering what I had to do in airport utility to set this up?  I was also wondering how to transition the network over from the old express to the new time capsule as far  software settings go. I really appreciate the help and assistance. Thanks folks. I'm really looking forward to setting up the network for our new iMac.

    Your setup is very easy..
This is how I would do it.
Remove the express from the network.. ie just unplug it but do not change anything in it. Keep the configuration as is until the TC is working.
Power off the cable modem.. this is requirement.. at least 20min is usually needed, dependining on your ISP.
Go into the airport utility and setup the TC as router for your network .. it is a simple setup.. but I would do as stated.. all short names, no spaces pure alphanumeric rather than accept Apple's names. That is for TC and wireless.
After 20min power up the cable modem.  Once it is running and you have internet access. you can proceed to setup the express to do the airplay. If the internet still doesn't work, power off the cable modem overnight..
Do not lose that express setup so if you absolutely have to, you can at any time substitute it back and have internet again.
So everything is working properly TC in place as full router.. now hard reset the express.. and simply use the airport utility to put it in extend wireless .. or plug in by ethernet if you are going to hard wire it.
The extend wireless setup is all done straight from the existing setup.
Now you can plug your express audio port into your speaker.. and setup the airplay via the itunes.
I will get Bob to give you his way of doing it.. There is no one RIGHT way .. but he can give you more info if you want a particular method.

  • Having trouble setting up time machine.

I'm trying to set up time machine and I go to the program, click it on, and then I click "choose backup disk", but there is nothing there. Is there anything I am supposed to do beforehand to give Time Machine a backup disk to save in?
My next question isn't about time machine but it might be related. I have to reinstall windows on my mac. I had it before and somehow it caught a virus, so I had to erase and it went to ****....long story short, It broke, I fixed it. Now i have to repartition my drive though. I assume that I have to split it three ways, one for Mac, Windows, and Time Machine. My question is....I want to leave Mac with the most space of all 3, obviously....whats the minimum I can split it to to install Windows xp and get Time Machine working (unless I'm way off and time machine setup is a different way)?

So one can't back up to a partition on the main disk with Time Machine?
The iMac comes from the factory with a single partition. If you want TM to backup to a second partition on the iMac internal drive, you will need to Partition the drive using OSX disk that came with the iMac (this erases every thing on the hard drive) and reinstall the OS from the DVD.
But, I do not recommend that approach. Backups are generally needed if your hard disk crashes. If you are backing up to a partition on the internal disk, you will lose your backup if/when the drive crashes.
The only reason to use TM on a partition on the internal drive is if you are doing a LOT of version sensitive work (meaning you made need to look at yesterday's work on the same project). But most applications can be set to do incremental change backups of individual projects making TM a ppor choice anyway.
Buy an external drive for the TM backup.

  • Just bought new time capsule- need help setting up WiFi network with another router

    Here ismy situation.
I had a wireless network setup up at home using a Belkin wifi router.
I have 2 macBooks (1 pro, 1 air) and 2 iphones that connect wirelessly and a desktop PC that is hard wired to the ethernet port.  In addition, I have a Verizon wireless network extender plugged in by ethernet.  All of the hard-wired gear is in our 3rd floor attic office (and the wireless signal was strong throughout the house).
The Belkin wifi router was plugged into a wall ethernet jack that is in turn wired into a Linksys router in the basement (along with multiple other ethernet ports througout the house) and is hardwired to the Cable modem next to it.  All of the hard-wired ethernet stuff (including the router in the basement) was there when we bought the house, and I have no clue in the tangle of wires how to sort them out (but don't really think I need to)
I just purchased a TimeCapsule to do wireless backups of my 2 macbooks, and tried to set it up alongside the existing wireless modem.
Needless to say, this did not work well. I called  AppleCare, and was told that the TimeCapsule needs to be the "1st" wireless adapter, so I went into the basement, and connected the time capsule directly to the cable modem, and then out to the basement router.  The Belkin router still needs to be in the attic to supply the PC and the Verizon adapter (so it is near a window for GPS signal).
If I try to name the WiFi network the same SSID on both the TC and the belkin router (to have dual signal strenth coverage) the whole thing gets messed up and the TC cannot be "found" by the aiprort Utility software.
What I have done now is that I have 2 side-by-side wireless networks with 2 unique names (actually 3, because I enabled the 5Ghz signal on the TC), but our wireless devices do not "switch" automatically from one SSID  to another stronger signal SSID as we move through the house
Here's the question: How do I name them the same so that the devices will switch effortlessly to the stongest signal?  I understand it involves switching the "channels" but don't know how to do it right now.  Currently, everything works, so I don't want to mess it up tinkering.  Another caveat- there are several other wireless networks from neighbors houses that I can "see".  I jsut downloaded a program called iStumbler that shows the channels, but not sure what to do with that info.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

OK.. sounds like a mess.. or at least messy and the previous people should have left a log book with all the IP address info in it.. you have far too many routers.. but from here it is impossible to tell how they are configured. Most are probably just setup as AP.
Naming rule for wireless.. Same SSID same security different channel.
SSID ie wireless name to work on the PC side should have no spaces and no special characters. TC name should also follow that rule. So the devices need to all set with fixed channels.
Don't worry too much about iStumbler and what is outside your house.. there isn't enough channels at 2.4ghz anyway. And you are going to need to use them all. There are only three non-overlapping channels. 1, 6, 11 so set each device to one of those channels. The TC should be as close as you can to where you normally use the MacBooks.. and turn on the 5ghz. You will have to leave it to automatic name so the Macbook can also roam across from 2.4 to 5ghz. But if you care to use a different name and force it onto 5ghz the speed is much better as long as you are in the same room.
Roaming is great in theory.. often in practice it just doesn't work.. you need to step in and turn off wireless and then turn it back on.. you can quickly see which router it is connecting to by hold down the option key when you click the airport fan in the top menu area.. and look at bssid.. you will have to figure out which number MAC address relates to which router.
Also do not be surprised if Lion gives you issues. It seems to often drop out and lose connection to the TC as a backup device even if internet is still working.
