Time to upgrade from my EOS 10D. Need advice.
I purchased my EOS 10D back in 2000 as a way to reclaim control of image processing after losing access to a darkroom when I graduated from college. Although it has served me well for everyday and semi-professional shots, it's now a relic by today's standards. I need to upgrade to something that will keep me happy for a while without breaking the bank. But there are so many Canon digital SLRs from which to choose, I just don't know which one would be best.
Any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Since I have never really invested a lot of money in lighting equipment, most of what I shoot is outdoors: scenery, wildlife, flowers, etc. And as an avid dog lover, I enjoy shooting my three Parson Russell Terriers more than anything--portrature, action shots, etc. I own a bakery for dogs as well, so I use the 10D for events such as "Photos with Frosty," where I do use a basic lighting setup and external flash to ensure that people get what appears to be a professional image of their pups. For everyday shooting, I use a Quantaray 19-200mm 1:3.5 - 6.3. I also have a Tokino 20-35mm 1:3.5 - 4.5 and a Tamraon 70-300 1:4 - 5.6 (the latter I really don't like much).
As to what's important to me, I guess it would be to contiue to do the things I have been doing with some versatility to allow me to try my hand at other things. As far as budget, I could go up to $1,500 but have an idea that I could get something much better than the 10D for a lot less than that. Today, for Photos with Rudolph (this year's character), I used an employee's T3i and was impressed. It was light and speedy, and the AF seemed far superior to my old (and beloved) 10D.
Thank you for getting back to me on this. It's a big purchase, and there are so many options. I don't mind spending money, but I don't want to waste it either. When I bought my 10D 12 years ago, the Rebel was sort of a joke. Now it seems that the Rebel I used today made my 10D obsolete.

I own CS6 (upgraded from CS5.5) and need a new computer. Will I need to reinstall every other CS package I own (in order) to get CS6 to work, or is there a quicker way to reinstall CS6?

Upgrading From XP - What you need to know
Hi,
As many of you are aware, support for Windows XP ends on April 8th 2014.
What does it mean?
End of support means that Microsoft will no longer issue Windows Updates for XP to maintain the security and integrity of the Operating System.
Do I Need to Upgrade?
If you are currently using Windows XP for every day activity then it is recommended to upgrade to a supported version of Windows to ensure you are receiving important security updates for your operating system.
In addition to updates, you may also experience compatibility issues with new hardware such as a new printer, document scanner, webcam etc. Most vendors will also move away from writing XP compatible drivers.
I subscribe to security and antivirus software, Do I need to upgrade Windows?
In short, Yes. While these antivirus and security packages do a good job in most cases, they do not unfortunately provide the relevant necessary security updates to maintain the integrity of the operating system. In fact most antivirus packages are reliant
on the operating system updates to maintain security.
Must I Upgrade To Windows 8?
This is a personal choice. Windows 8 is the latest Microsoft operating system, you can also upgrade to any supported operating system such as Windows Vista, Windows 7 or indeed Windows 8. The only obstacle is to find a vendor that still sells licensing for
the older products.
How can I check If My Computer Is Ready For Windows 8
Windows Upgrade Assistant will assist you to check your computers compatibility with Windows 8
Here is a summary of the system requirements:
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Free hard drive space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM drive
I don't know if my computer is 32bit or 64bit
You will be glad to know that Windows 8 comes with both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.
To see whether a PC running Windows XP is capable of running a 64-bit version of Windows, do the following:
Click Start.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
If "x64 Edition" is listed under System, your processor is capable of running a 64-bit version of Windows.
If "x86 Edition" is listed then its a 32bit installation
Where can I get Windows 8?
Your local computer store should be able to assist you with a copy. Windows 8.1 is the current version.
You can also use the
Microsoft compare and decide website to determine which version you require and select the buy now option for online purchase.
How Do I Install Windows 8?
It is important to note that upgrading from XP to Windows 8 will not retain your files. You should back up your files prior to upgrading either by using an external hard drive, or using
Sky Drive which is Free
Microsoft's Put Together An Upgrade Procedure From XP/Visa to Windows 8
It is also important to note that installing from DVD will require your system to have a DVD drive or if purchasing online you will need a DVD writer drive to write the installation DVD prior to installation.
Feel free to ask any questions which are not covered above.
Regards,
M
If you find my information useful, please rate it. :-)I don't set out to sell anything, I'm an independent writer tasked with writing stuff about things to inform people. We link stuff to help people find things if they want to buy them, but the above isn't a sales pitch, it's info to help people figure out if they want or need something.
I didn't know that there was a cabal of antenna dealers who have been promulgating a myth (as a writer: nicely done there) about the nature of NTSC and ATSC; I hadn't ever considered that the antenna market was that large. When I received the request to write an article about antennas I was actually surprised; antennas don't have the support of major telecommunications companies and I sincerely doubt that there's going to be a run on them because of this article. I saw this as a bit of a public service opportunity to talk about a technology that a small segment would be interested in.
Anyway, I'm not sure we're going to get much farther on this; yes Best Buy sells antennas, but no, they didn't ask for an ad. They asked for an article that focused on how these antennas work and what to look for. Thank you for adding your insight about ATSC - I think that was actually covered in paragraphy three, but it's nice to see it spelled out more directly.
Have a nice day - and if you'd like to discuss this directly, please send me a DM on twitter @thetechnogram -
Upgrade from DW8 to CS4. need some advise/info
Since 1 year I`m using DW8 (Studio 8) as I started making websites with this program. (it is far much interesting as the progam I had before).
This year I learned about PHP and databases and dynamic websites.
I`m thinking of getting CS4.
Now I have some questions for which I hope you can give me some info or advise :
1) Can I only upgrade the DW8 out of Studio 8 upto CS4?
2) Is there much difference between them. Are the buttons or option to be found somewhere else or are they still in the same place?
3) Can I still use my old page of DW8 in CS4? Or do I need to convert or rebuild them?
4) Any common bugs in CS4. I do ask this one as I`m not that technical to overcome some bugs that seems easy to pro`s.
Thanks in advance
Kind regards
martineNo, that's not correct. "Upgrade" refers only to the price you pay. Regardless of which version you buy, the Studio 8 software remains on your computer, and can still be used.
However, as I said before, you cannot run Dreamweaver 8 and Dreamweaver CS4 at the same time on a Windows computer. If, for some reason, you want to use Dreamweaver 8, you must close Dreamweaver CS4. After you have finished working with Dreamweaver 8, close it, and then you can relaunch Dreamweaver CS4.
David,
You are confusing me.
With `full` version I mean : the higher price.
With `upgrade` I mean the cheaper price.
From the earlier messages I understood that an `upgrade` (thus the cheaper price) of 1 piece of Studio 8 is not possbile.
So to have DW8 (out of Studio 8) changed into DW CS4 I have the following option :
- I purchase the full (thus higher price) version of Dreamweaver CS4. Then I can install CS4 and still all programs of Studio 8 can be used.
or
- I purchase an `upgrade` (thus the cheaper price) from Studio 8 to CS4 Web Standard. Here we go from one suite to another and all programs are updated/upgraded.
Hope I`m out of the confusion now.

Upgrading from Panther to Tiger -- Need some hand holding
Hello all,
So I'm a newbie to upgrading operating systems on the Mac but need to upgrade to Tiger in order to install Final Cut Studio 5 so I can use my new HD camera. I will upgrade to Leopard when it comes out, but I need to be able to edit my videocamera's footage now.
So...I've read so many horror stories I wanted to post about my system and some of my most used applications and see if anyone sees any potential problems, as far as compatibility OR not working once the upgrade is complete..
I have a 1.8 Dual G5, 2 gigs RAM, running Panther 10.3.9
I use these applications FREQUENTLY and want to make sure they still work after doing a simple upgrade:
Adobe Creative Suite (not 2, but the one before that)
Dreamweaver 8
Final Cut HD 4.5 (will I be able to open old projects with the new FCP 5, otherwise I won't need this afterwards)
DVD Studio Pro 3 (will I be able to open old projects with the new DVD Studio Pro 4 otherwise I won't need this afterwards)
iLife '06 (this won't be overwritten, correct?)
iWork
Quickbooks (that came with my original system...will it stay too?)
Microsoft Office X for Mac (using Entourage as my mail program)
Virtual PC for Mac
Classic OS 9 (I've read I should remove this before I upgrade? I never use it)
I think that's the important stuff. Some people tell me they've upgraded with no problems but I guess I read these boards too much to be that confident.
I've backed up my Docs, iTunes, iPhoto...anything else in my Library or something else you recommend I backup?
Do I choose Archive and Install for a Simple Upgrade or will it just say "Simple Upgrade" and not prompt me further?
Sorry if these are dumb questions...I'm just nervous I will have a big paperweight on my desk after this and I have mucho work to do right now!
Thanks everyone!
MareHere are some suggestions:
Important: Please read before installing
1. If you have a third-party FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing this update. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.
System Update Procedure
A. Repair hard drive and permissions.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.
B. Clone your existing system to an external Firewire drive.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Drag the startup or source volume to the Source entry field.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
C. Consult the Tiger Installation Checklist.
You have three upgrade options. If you use the Upgrade installation option be sure you have repaired the hard drive and permissions first and made your backup. If you choose the Archive and Install option then you only need to repair the hard drive.
Neither of the above options will erase the disk. Some of your software may not work with Tiger. You will need to upgrade those programs. It would be best to do the upgrades to your software before upgrading to Tiger.
You don't have to remove your OS 9 installation for Classic. However, if you don't use it you can recover the disk space by deleting it from the drive. The OS 9 folders are located at the root directory of the hard drive and are:
+System Folder+ (Note this is NOT the System folder.)
+Applications (Mac OS 9)+
Documentation
Be sure Classic is not activated (System Preferences.) Simply open the System Folder and drag the System file into the Trash. Restart the computer. After the computer restarts empty the Trash then drag the three OS 9 folders to the Trash and empty. -
Is it time to upgrade from CS3 to CS4?
I currently use CS3 but have a version of CS4. I edit full HD XD CAM EX and Cineform 25p. The reason I have not yet switched to CS4 is because I am waiting for the bugs to be worked out. I am now checking in to see how things have moved forward on that end. Is it worth it to upgrade or should I stick with CS3 for now?
I currently use CS3 but have a version of CS4.
What is stopping you from trying it out? CS3 and CS4 can peacefully coexist on the same system. Given your decisiveness shown in the past, only you can decide and you have the means to make a decision. OTOH, I would not be surprised I you only make your decision when CS5 has been on the market for over a year.
Your question has about the same value as someone saying:
"I have a Beamer 530 from 2004 and a Beamer 530 from 2009. Should I be driving the 2009 version?" -
What Microsoft Office upgrade (from 2004) do I need for OS Lion?
I have a new MacBook Pro with OS Lion. I migrated files and applications from my MacBook with Leopard. Microsoft Office 2004 will not work with Lion. Should I just bite the bullet and buy the latest version of Microsoft Office or is there an upgrade?
Good luck with it...the install went without a hitch for me. Just the usual pain putting in the ridiculous activation code
Happy holidays. -

Upgrading from GB2 to GB3 need to add to inst library/own loops etc etc
if you have examined as i have the innards of GB3 and compared it to GB2 there are many many additions in sampler sampler files, etc... let alone your already saved loops.
This is not an easy task. GB2 has stuff 3 dont have and vc versa. I hope that cst and exs documents can be easily exchanged from 2 to 3. Might pay to examine all your GB folders and see for yourself. You can take your iPad to an Apple store and they will do the update.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Upgrade from Rebel EOS 8mp to T3i - advice on SDHC. PNY vs Sandisk?
Hello Everyone,
I'm new to the board.
I have the Rebel EOS 35mm, later added the DSLR in 8mp (the XT I believe it is).
And I've just now moved on up to the T3i.
I'm looking forward to the bump in picture clarity and features.
I will probably keep my old body as a back up as it still works just fine.
Now, I'm onto purchasing data cards. The old body uses compact flash, and as you all know already.. the T3i uses SDHC.
So, my question to you seasoned users.. I picked up a PNY 16g class 10 with 20mb transfer.
Would I be better off with the Sandisk 16g Ultra class 10 that boasts 30mb read with slower write but it doesn't specify the write speed.
Any thoughts?
PS, I've been stalking the other post on the person with the new T3i and lots of good info in there. Thank you.Your camera WRITES to them but your card reader READS them so write speed is more important IF you shoot video or action in the highest FPS mode. The easiest way to verify if you need faster cards is to compare the specs in the manual against your results. If it says you can shoot 40 consecutive frames (holding the shutter release down) in jpg before seriously slowing down check how your card compares. If you come up short you need a faster card, but if you're very close (things like ISO & shutter speed have an effect) faster cards aren't going to deliver much improvement vs the extra cost.

Advice on Upgrading from PS3 to PS4 Needed!
Hi all,I've been thinking on selling my PS3 along with games etc. and buying a PS4 for a while now, but I've always been put off doing so because of all I may lose and the process of doing so in general. I use PlayTV on my PS3 to watch, pause and record live TV - it has many faults, but I find it great to use and can't see an alternative on PS4, is there one? The official Bluetooth remote is hands down better than any other remote I've used, but I don't see one available for PS4. In summary:- Can I watch, pause and record live TV through a PS4 or do I need an eternal device?- Is there an official Bluetooth remote available for the PS4?- Are all major video format such as MP4, MKV, AVI supported?- How best can I back up save games, games downloaded from the store, video/audio files etc.?- Am I missing anything? Any advice on making the transition would be really appreciated, I've been kind of dreading it for a while and need a little help!

remote is on the way video playback is limited vs ps3 however if you can aford £3 per month and buy a plex pass you can play anything with the plex app. there is no play tv style add on for the ps4 so no pvr stuff. you can back up saves to the cloud (VERY LIMITED SPACE) or to an external hdd or usb stick. to be honest there is no transition from ps3 to ps4 apart from your account and trophies etc (and any cross buy games you may already have) Thanks for the info. The lack of PlayTV is really frustrating, they were onto a really good thing with it but just let it fall by the wayside - is there any chance of Playstation Vue becoming available in the UK? -
Need to upgrade from 10.5.8 - need download
I own a mulitple computer license for Snow Leopard but I never upgraded my daughter's computer. Now she wants to upgrade to Mavericks. How can I get a downloaded copy of the software
You can't download Snow Leopard. It comes on a DVD.
You must have at least Snow Leopard installed to install Mavericks, which only comes as a download. -
First time buyer of an unlocked phone/I need advic...
I have my eyes on the 5800 Express Music, and I am about to purchase within the next week. I would get the N900, but I don't think I need that much power right now. My questions are:
- what carriers can I use the phone on in the U.S (I prefer SprintNextel)?
- how do I configure the phone for a network?
- what is the warranty on the device and is there "cellphone insurance" available from Nokia for this phone?
-- Romulanrains
Solved!
Go to Solution. You can't use Sprint. They use a different network. In the US the 2 largest carriers you can use are AT&T and T-Mobile. If you will be buying a data plan, AT&T has 3G coverage that the phone will work on. If you go to T-Mobile, you will probably be limited to the slower Edge. Otherwise, T-Mobile is cheaper for both plans and "pay as you go". Personally, I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile as I had too many problems with AT&T's pay as you go plan. I am much happier now. I didn't care about a data plan as I just used wi-fi when available.
If I have helped you with your problem in some way, please take a little time and hit the kudos button in my post. Without your feedback, I don't know if I am being helpful or should just be put out to pasture. -
Moving from PC to MAC - need advice on mass music storage
Hi all,
I am moving my PC music from an external drive to my iMAC.
I Work as a full time DJ also and have 2 x 1TB external hard drives with nearly 2,500 albums. Now some of these albums are specialist DJ albums which I have tagged myself (with album name - ie, DJ 80s collection 1 - and the name of the songs)
These work well for me.
Now my question is this:
When i transfered 1 of the specialist DJ albums over, into iTunes on my iMac it started to break them into separate albums which I don't want.
ok - so what I want to do is this. Keep all my DJ music either on a separate external hard drive and keep them 100% away from iTunes and only drag my proper albums ie, ColdPlay CD etc over where they stay in there proper album form.
I want iTunes on my iMac to stay clean looking with all songs in there proper albums with artwork etc and all my DJ music separate and NOT in iTunes.
If anyone can help the best way of doing this - Brilliant!
ps, is there a separate music player that I can use for my DJ music?
Also is Nero available for Mac - or any FREE software you can recommend?
AdeiTunes does allow you to create multiple music libraries -- just hold down the Option key when starting the program. This way you could create one normal, clean library, and have another with your DJ-related songs.
For those DJ-related songs, you might consider replicating the CDs in the form of playlists -- like your DJ 80s Collection.
And for DJ software, you should take a look at DJay (which also runs on the iPhone and the iPad). While not free, it works remarkably well. A demo version is available.
Good luck. -
Need advise: upgrade from 7.1.6 (Pro) to 7.4.5
Hello.
In the past there have been times when upgrading led to a desperate need to downgrade. I have been very happy with 7.1.6 Pro for some time now and don't want to fix what ain't broke.
(same goes for iTunes. I have 7.1.1 and am reluctant to move away from it to current versions)
So what I'm asking is: any opinions, advise about leaving QT 7.1.6 behind; and if I do upgrade, can I jump all the way to 7.4.5, or do I need to do it incrementally?
(I am in Mac OS 10.4.11, using a Mac Pro. No immediate plans to go to Leopard.)
nÔÔdle--hëadNewer version of QuickTime allow the newer features in iTunes be used (movie rentals and such).
If you don't need them and are happy where you are then stay there.
You don't need to update incrementally and your Pro status will remain after the upgrade.
