Time zone awared web application

I have a web application. servlet retrieve database. one of column stored in database is date which is GMT date.
I would like to display this date to end user base on their time zone(not server's timezone).
for example, the date stored in database is 0:00 am GMT, for user in EST, I would like user see 7:00PM, user in PST, I would like to show them 4:00 PM.
How do I do this?
Thanks

You typically will retrieve a SQL Date from the db. Convert this to a java.util.Date, pass this value to the client.
Use a DateFormat to display it to the client. Of course, if you have a web-based, browser-based application, you might have to store your customer's TZ information in session state, pass it to the server, and use that information to format on the server.

  • Automatic time zone conversion in web dynpro

We have a WDA running on top of a SAP system that is running on US time. The data from the WDA must be stored in SAP using US time. The WDA will however run in England and needs to display English time to the users. Is there any mechanism or concept in web dynpro that provides automatic time conversion when reading from and displaying time and when writing data back to the database? Some kind of  screen exit or other?
I am not asking how to convert the value of a single field from one time zone to another, I am hoping for some general solution to the problem of time zones in web dynpro.
    Thanks!

I don't really have anything useful to say, but couldn't help to add my two cents here...
Whenever you work in a system that supports users or other parties spread among different time zones you start wishing for some better time zone support. It's not just the user's time zone that is relevant, just imagine for example a service call to a call center in India, where probably the customer's time zone is even more important than the user time zone.
I know that in principle we have some design issue here, because standalone dates (without any time details) are impossible to convert among different time zones. It would be nice though if the system would provide a framework where any date/time fields can be registered and linked to some time zone field. Changing the time zone field, would automatically update all registered date/time fields.
Ideally the field for choosing time zones would have the ability to show a list of preferred time zones with (changeable) explanations. One could for example imagine that by default it's populated with the two entries for user time zone and system time zone. Each application should be able to register additional time zones, e.g. sold-to time zone for an order, etc.
Another (workaround) option I used in applications (for automatically filled read-only fields, like creation date/time) is to settle on one reasonable default time zone (e.g. user) and then have tool tips showing dates/times in other relevant time zones.
Anyhow, lots of half-baked gibberish, essentially I just wanted to say that it would be nice to have some better time zone support, so I'm voting for that as well (good point Chris). And ideally this would not be limited to web dynpro. I'm sure some smart person should be able to come up with something nice...
    Cheers, harald

  • New Web Application not creating correctly

I'm having an odd occurrence happen about 50% of the time right now when creating new web applications during my migration from SP2010 to SP2013.
During creating a web application in Central Admin, I can get through the first setup page, then get to the "This shouldn't take long" page and will sit there for 30+ minutes. I end up closing the window and will see that the Web application is there in
Central admin, and sometimes the DB will be created, other times not, not a big issue since I'm mounting a sp2010 database to this web application.
What I do notice is that either a IIS site will either not be created at all, or it will be created, but the Virtual Folder is empty. When trying to delete the Web Application through central admin or PowerShell it will hang for hours until the next day
when it's finally deleted. During this time I am not able to create any other web applications. It's usually at this time that I can successfully create a new web applications but even that is unreliable.
Has anyone ran into this issue or can suggest any workarounds to get this working? I'm wondering if copying the contents of another web application's virtual directory to the failed web application's virtual directory will be a workaround. I still need to
verify if creating a web application through PowerShell gives me the same headache but at the moment I'm currently waiting for a web application to delete.

Finally got this resolved after an 8 hour call with Microsoft. After finally getting the Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application service to restart (took 4 hours) We found that changing the Shutdown time in the Web Application Pool for the Central
Admin pool to 400 allowed for the Web Application to complete successfully.
I'm still confused to why everything is taking so long now to complete so i'll have to look into that next.
Folks, this is a minor problem that seems to be creeping up more and more. I personally have performed over 8 installs in various environments. I have seen this issue in 6 out of the 8 environments I have created. All servers I have tried a variation of
software. In MOST of my tests, this seems to be a problem. Not sure why they decide to recycle the App Pool just before they perform an "Virtual Directory Copy." Here are the results of my tests. I was very methodical in my testing and made sure these were
clean downloads every time. As you will see, I tried variations of hardware increases, physical to virtual, database versions and patch levels...etc.

  • Default Web Application - new bug in SP1?

Just rebuilding everything from scratch to test out SP1. Have noticed
that the admin console now always seems to report only "(none)" in the
Default Web Application drop-down, even if other web apps are deployed
to the server. Editing the config.xml directly detours the problem, in
that the default app can be set and used, but the admin console still
    says "(none)".
Lots of other good things fixed in SP1 though!
    Chris

What you can do if you may shutdown the server is to replace the
console.war from WLS6.0SP1 with that from WLS6.0, do the mods and put
the new back in place. If you may stop the server, this is I think the
    easiest sollution.

  • Chart problems in Web-Application Designer

    Hello,
I am trying to use CHART in Web Application Designer.
But whatever TYPE I select in that (pie/stack/..),
It shows the report with default chart type..
Then after one /two trials, I have run time error. & Web application Designer crashes. In preview of that chart on template, it shows the chart type I have selected.
What am I missing in my steps. Or is some library missing..
    Thanks for you suggestion.
Is very urgent & as I need to show report tomorrow.
    Regards,
    Santosh

    Hi Santosh,
<b>Defining the Width and Height of the Entire Chart</b>
    in the Properties
Enter the desired values in fields Width and Height of the window in which you are editing the chart. The entries should be in pixels.
    Choose Apply.
The size of the entire chart is changed according to your specifications.
Changing the Size of the Entire Chart with the Mouse
Point to the border of the preview window with the mouse.
The cursor becomes a double arrow.
Click on the border and pull the preview window to the required size.
The size of the entire chart is changed when you let go of the mouse key.
Changing the Size of the Plot Area or the Legend with the Mouse
Click on the element whose size you want to change (plot area or legend).
The element is enclosed in a move handle.
Point to one of the move handles with the mouse.
The cursor becomes a double arrow.
If the cursor does not become a double arrow, you might not have selected the right element, for example the chart area instead of the plot area. In this case click again on the element whose size you want to change.
Click on the move handle and keep the mouse key pressed.
    The cursor becomes a cross.
Pull the element to the desired size.
The size of the element is changed when you let go of the mouse key.
Avoid stretching the plot area over the whole area of the chart. The outermost border of the plot area disappears from the visible area in this case and cannot be clicked on again. You cannot change the size of the plot area. If you made the plot area too large by accident, you can undo it with the menu option Undo in the context menu. You can reset the plot area to its original size with Reset, but you will lose all the changes you made to the chart.
    <i><u><b><b><b><b>
It is simple issue D't worry..And one morething is  Check the <b>Specific Properties</b> of the Template</b></b></b></b></u></i> in Design of the web template.

  • Advice on time zones with iPhones?

    Hi All,
I have been on several trips this year to multiple time zones.  Ther are some problems, as have been described here in multiple posts, with Aperture's import function with respect to time zone.  However, it seems to have an extra wrinkle when importing photos from an iPhone (I'm assuming because the iPhone is time-zone aware).
This is what I have observed:
When changing the time zone "Camera time" and "Actual time" in the import window, the "Adjusted date" may never be right ("File info" pane).  However, after performing the import, Aperture's time for the photo will still be correct for my Canon Rebel XTi.
However, under similar circumstances with my iPhone, Aperture always makes the resulting photo in EST (maybe because that's what time zone my computer is in?), even though I tell it, in the import dialog, that the photo was in CST.  The numerical values are right, though, so the photos are actually 1 hour wrong in this case.  That is, the time tag of the photo in the phone is 1:00 PM (CST, since the phone was synced with CST cell time), and after importing it is 1:00 PM EST within Aperture.  I set Camera Time and Actual Time to America/Chicago.  When viewing the photo in Image Capture, it says 1:00 PM.
Has anyone had any similar problems with iPhones (or time-zone aware cameras)?  Any thoughts on the best way to import?
    thanks,
    nathan
PS, I have written several messages to Aperture Feedback concerning these bugs, which essentially make time zone management unusable.

    Hi Mr Endo,
I see the same date confusion with my iPod - so probably the issue is caused by IOS 5 and Photo Stream, not by Aperture. To download from the PhotoStream there are no Timezone import settings - probably that is causing the buggy behaviour.
Conjecture: Mobile devices are pushing their data for immediate download, so it would be safe to assume, the images you download have been taken in the same timezone you are in now.
My question was, is Aperture using the timezone of your mac or asking the iPhone for the timezone? All my cameras, and my iPod, too, are set to UTC, because I like to have a continous timebase without daylight saving discontinuities.
When I took a picture with my iPod right now (8:30 MEZ) - iPod clock and Aperture import set to camera time and actual time both UTC, this image showed up in the PhotoStream and the import panel  as 7:30 MEZ. The import was tagged correctly, however, after I downloaded the image files to disk (I usually geotag in jetphoto before importing to Aperture) and imported from a Finder folder. Then the timezone settings were respected by Aperture.
As a workaround, we will probably have to fool Aperture, to make it forget that the images originate from a mobile device.

  • Session time out in a web application

    Hi,

  • Application for multiple times zones?

I have a world edition and travel quite a bit.  Anyone know of any application out there that allows one to schedule  events in more than one time zone?   What would be best is a program that allows me to enter something in my calendar that then allows me to select which time zone that event will occur in.  Barring that perhaps there is a clock program that allows me to at least see three or more times simultaneously.

There is no software that I no of (RIM should take notice as it's a problem with the device itself).
I have faced the same problem and I can give you half a solution. What I do is enter the apointment based on the + or minus of the GMT schedule for the time zone I'm going to be in. Of course it will be incorrect in your present time zone. However, when you change the BB clock for the new time zone all your appointments will show up at the correct time.

    Many tanks

If it has run for 3 hours it's probably done and you can quit Migration Assistant and reboot the new computer. In the future rather than using Migration Assistant I would recommend using Startup Assistant which tends to be a bit more reliable and does not create a new user account as MA does. If  you're interested here is an article explaining Setup Assistant tips.
