TimeCapsule Drive Regularly Disappears, Requires Reboot

I have a new time capsule with a couple usb drives also connected via a hub. About once a day it stops sharing all drives both the internal one and the externals. Network connectivity is fine. I have to reboot it to recognize things again. The airport setup utility also will not connect when I get to this point. I've tried connected both over wifi and ethernet. Please advise

I was just about to post this exact same problem.
I'm having to restart my TC several times each day because the drives appear to randomly dismount.
The AirPort Utility hangs when checking the TC configuration.
When I do restart the TC I sometimes get error messages that the discs were not properly ejected and I need to run disk utility to repair them.

  • My external Seagate 4Tb drive keeps disappearing on my Windows 8.1 Toshbia X75 laptop

I have a new Toshiba X75 laptop running Windows 8.1 64 Bit. One of my external drives keeps disappearing on me and the only way that I know of to get it back is to reboot, and this is getting old real fast.
    I have 5 external hard drives; drive 1: 500Gb, USB 2.0 western digital, drive 2: 2TB, USB 3.0 seagate, drive 3: 3TB, USB 3.0 seagate, drive 4: 4TB, USB 3.0 seagate, and drive 5: 4TB, USB 3.0 seagate. Drives 1, 2 & 5 are connected to a powered USB 2.0
7 port hub which is plugged into one of the laptop's 4 USB 3.0 ports; the othe two drives are plugged directly into two of the other three USB 3.0 ports on the laptop.
Drive 1 has done this once before and hasn't done it since. Drive 4 is the problem child although drive 5 has done this in the past too. Both drive 4 & 5 where purchased at the same time. At first I thought that drive 4's problem was the drive it self,
so I had it replaced, but it still is a problem child. When it was replaced they gave me a newer version of the drive too.
Is there a fix via Microsoft?
I have read that there might be some sort of a fix for the registry, but when it comes to playing with the registry, I tend to make sure that I know exactly what I'm doing before hand, and right now I don't know what to do in the regestry.
    Anyone have some great ideas?
And thanks ahead of time for the help.

This is probably the article that you were referring to with the registry fix:
"Help! After installing Windows 8.1, my USB drive disappears or file transfers
    stop unexpectedly..."
This article was updated to state that the registry workaround is no longer required, as the Update has a fix in it. However, you still might want to check the power settings and make sure 'suspend' is disabled.
    Hope this helps,

  • My external hard drive has disappeared

My external hard drive has disappeared from the 'open file' window in photoshop CS6. It's working fine and appears in other applications such as bridge and lightroom. How do I get it back? I'm running a Mac on OS X.

You may have accidentally dragged the drive out of the Devices list in the sidebar.
In a Finder window with visible sidebar, do Shift+Cmd+G to get the Go To Folder dialog. Enter
    /volumes
    then click OK.
You'll see all your mounted volumes in the Finder window. Drag the required one to the Devices list in the sidebar.

  • Hard Drives Keeps Disappearing Windows 8.1

I just recently upgraded to Win 8.1. I have 3 hdds. Win is installed on Samsung SSD. The other hdds is for software and for games. The gaming hard drive keeps disappearing. I have to restart the computer to get it show again in My Computers. Also I notice
sometimes when I restart my boot order keeps changing. I have to go into the bios and change the load order back to my SSD to the 1st priority. Can someone help with this issue?

    Hi wjason777,
OS related issue please consult on MS Answers http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows
Hardware related issue please contact your provider.
For your issue, when you reboot you can press F2 or F12 to load your boot menu. However, please notice the key depends on your hardware. It migth also be F5. So you may have to contact your computer provider about this issue.
If you can open that Boot menu. Please try search for boot order. Then you will be able to change the order.
By the way, if SSD keeps disappear, I think it is poor contact. I will recommend you contact your provider for more details.

  • Intel Bluetooth Driver Causing Spontaneous Reboot While Using ThinInstaller

I have had this issue since we got our new T440p's and X240's.  I have our driver repository all set up and during my SCCM task sequence I have the Lenovo drivers and software installed using ThinInstaller.
During the second round of running ThinInstaller, the Bluetooth driver is installed.  After the Bluetooth driver is installed ThinInstaller continues installing other packages then the system spontaneously reboots.  I had this issue happen intermittently with the T440p's, but happens every time with the X240's.
My "solution" was to disable the Bluetooth driver in the repository database.  I have not experienced the reboot issue after doing this, however, now the Bluetooth driver is not getting installed.
The driver (giww10ww) is not included in the SCCM admin package and apparently cannot be installed by simply using a standard driver .inf, therefore, I cannot pre-stage the driver.
My only other idea is to modify the .xml file so I can schedule the installation after all the other packages, maybe on a third pass.  However, I am not sure how to do this, nor do I think I would like to maintain custom modifications throughout new version releases.
Am I the only one experiencing this?
    Systems: T440p (20AN), X240 (20AL)
    Deployed OS: Windows 7 SP1 X64
    Driver: Intel Bluetooth Device Software - Initial Install - 7 [64], v.17.0.1401.418 (giww10ww)

I have done research on your   20AL and 20AN from a SYSTEM Update packages viewpoint. Both machines use the same SU packages for your bluetooth type.
    https://download.lenovo.com/catalog//20AL_Win7.xml
    https://download.lenovo.com/catalog//20AN_Win7.xml
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/giww10ww_764_u_2_.xml
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/giww10ww_764_i_2_.xml
If initial install of giww10,  reboot type=3  requires  reboot
If upgrade install giww10, reboot type=1  Forces a reboot
The SU package logic is reflecting what the msi.exec will do, after far as reboot type=.
    Strange:
SU calls this version                                   17.0.1401.418 in their package wrapper. as does update retriever.
The download support site  states version 17.0.1401.0428 package wrapper.
    - 17.0.1401.422   (Driver) < all packages will install this driver version.
It appears upgrade=force reboot, initial install=requires reboot. Are all your  240's ALWAYS getting bluetooth upgrades of the driver? .
Someone else will have to explain if there is a workaround for the force reboot, or better sequence to the install.
    ==
During your second run of thin installer, are you certain that the bluetooth install is FORCING a reboot, or could it be another software install Forcing the reboot?
You stated earlier possibly modifying the thin installer .xml.  Did you mean modify the .xml in the repository, which is probably built using update retriever. I stated earlier dont modify the .xml. Reason is: the reboot code is used by TI to anticipate what msi.exe will do. If the intel driver install says force reboot, you will get a force reboot. ie,changing the .xml will not change much.
Workaround?: Depending how you populate each machine, lets say image copy. Have the bluebooth driver uninstalled on the master image.
    ===
Is there a new release of the Bluetooth Driver without a force reboot?
    Mvw
The driver is from INTEL.  Lenovo has no control of the reboot type= in the msi.exe.

hello out there... my superdrive always seems to be "off" using it requires rebooting the mini, and luck

If so, does unplugging it and or plugging it into a different USB port bring it back?

  • Why does my Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive keep disappearing?

    Hi All,
Having major problems with a Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153160).  External drive contains Western Digital 2TB drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136891).  I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3 on a 2012 Mac Mini.
Basically, I can plug-in or turn the drive on, it mounts fine. Can run a Time Machine Backup.  At some point (and I think it's when the computer goes to sleep), the drive hangs and I can no longer access it.  Time Machine will hang on "Looking for backup disk".  Drive will still appear in Finder, but I cannot "Eject" it.  I've also tried to do a "umount -f" on it from the Terminal.  Disk Utility still "sees" the device and the disk (partition?), but can't run a repair.
The only way I've found to fix this problem is to reboot the machine.  I've crawled through the System log, but I don't see anything that points to a problem.
What else can I check?  I'm have no idea if it's the hard drive, the external USB enclousure, Mac OS X, or the Mac Mini that's the problem.  Please let me know if there is more information I could provide to help solve this problem.  It's really frustrating!!!
    Thanks!
    -Ben

I received an answer from Thermaltake technical support. I asked if perhaps there was a firmware upgrade to prevent their drive from disappearing. They wrote on 22/04/2013:
Thank you for contacting Thermaltake Customer Service.
No firmware to do it. Just set system to never sleep. System will cut/disconnect the USB when it into sleep mode.
I wrote back saying I have never had to do that with other USB devices. And I routinely allow my system to Sleep. Is that an issue with their drive housings? They replied on 23/04/2013:
that is issue with sleep mode.
I don't know if this occurs with other USB 3.0 drives and Time Machine. Somehow, I doubt it. Anyway, it sounds as though my Thermaltake is destined for eBay...

  • Odd issue with hard drive renaming itself on reboot.

I have an odd problem I have no idea what is causing it. I have a mac pro and I have multiple hard drives internally and i also have two esata hard raid drives connected to the extra esata ports using the cable extender. Anyways, one of those drives renames itself on reboot, causing all kinds of problems when i then try to access files on it. For example, if I had a program that had its files stored there it wouldn't be able to find them when it went looking because the volume all of a sudden is "missing" but what happens is it will attach a 1 to the end of its name. Then when I reboot, it will remove the 1. On next reboot, it will repeat and so on. Any ideas as to what is causing this?

My guess is that there is something wrong with the connection between the computer and the drive. The commonest cause is backup software that is in the middle of backing up something when the connection to the backup drive is dropped, so that the backup software creates an actual folder inside the /Volumes folder with the name of the drive and does its backup to this folder. The result is that the next time the drive mounts it gets the "DriveName 1" designation, and a bunch of space on your startup drive has mysteriously disappeared. So I think what is happening is that you are intermittently losing the drive. Whether the problem is the cable, the connectors, or the drive itself, you could try experimenting to find out. Try swapping the cable for another, and if that doesn't work try plugging the cable into a different connector on the computer, and so on.

  • Qosmio X500 - Black screen crash when loading games, requiring reboot

I have a brand new Qosmio X500 (PQX33A-00X00J) with all the original drivers as they came out the box, and 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium OS. The only thing I've done on this laptop is install games. The laptop runs fine for most things, and for a very few games (Unreal Tournament 2007 is the only one so far), but almost all games crash with a black screen the first time they're run. Sometimes I'll see a splash screen the first time, and once or twice I've got to a start screen, but thereafter the screen goes completely black, no sound, and the machine freezes requiring a reboot.
It's extremely frustrating, considering this is a brand new, out of the box gaming laptop, and I haven't changed any drivers or anything. It's running an Nvidia Geforce GTS 250M display card, and the native resolution for the LCD screen is 1920x1080. I suspect it may have something to do with the unusual native screen resolution or the aspect ratio, because I managed to get one game to run (FEAR) by going into the supplied config utility and setting the game's default screen resolution to 1024x768. FEAR has the same crash if set to a higher resolution.
    The games I've tried:
Unreal Tournament 2007 - runs perfectly at all resolutions
Half Life 2 - crashes on launch with black screen, no sound, requiring reboot.
Counter Strike - the 1st time I managed to the setup screen, changed screen resolution, it crashed immediately. Thereafter it crashes straight away on launch, I can't even get to the setup screen. Uninstalled, reinstalled, same thing, crashes on launch with black screen, requiring reboot.
Bioshock - only ever got a "Bioshock" logo, then crashes with black screen, requiring reboot.
Frontlines - Fuel of War - crashes on launch with blank screen, requiring reboot.
Call Of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare - crashes immediately on loading with black screen, requiring reboot.
Crysis - crashes immediately on loading with black screen, requiring a reboot.
Except for UT 2007, almost every game has just crashed the first time it's been run, I usually don't even get a 1st shot at trying to change any settings. I've tried loading the games that provide a safe mode in that (e.g. Modern Warfare), but the same thing happens. I've also tried setting the laptop resolution to 1024x768 before running the games, but no difference. I've also made sure I'm running the latest patched version of the games, and I've checked the Toshiba website, but there are no driver updates so far that I can find for this laptop either.
I'm completely pulling my hair out, and solving this is very time consuming, because every time I try anything I have to reboot before I can try something else. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Someone suggested I try turning off my antivirus, and it turns out that was the problem. It seems Comodo has compatibility problems with games in Windows 64-bit editions since one of their latest releases.

  • My external drive has disappeared although i shows up in disc utility, and flash drives also do not appear. Any ideas? Have tried restarting but.....

My back-up has stopped as my external drive is shown as "not accessible" and has disappeared from Finder although it shows up in Disc Utility. Similarly my  USB flash drive has disappeared. Restarting does not help! Any ideas?

That's good news but maybe run a Repair Disk on it anyway given that it has been somewhat unpredictable.

  • Portable hard drive no longer requires password to decrypt it - security risk

I have a WD passport for Mac. It was previously encrypted and i would have to enter a password every time I wanted access to the drive - perfect. But then I had to decrypt it and when I had finished I re-encrypted the drive once again by right clicking and selecting encrypt drive. The drive is now encrypted again which is good, but the problem is that when I now plug it into my MBP the files are automatically accessible...the drive doesn't require a password to decrypt it anymore.
This is obviously a security risk so i want to go back to having to provide a password to unlock the drive. I've read some stuff about the password being saved in keychain but not had any luck looking for it and I'm a bit of a novice!
I'm using a 2012 MBP Retina with the latest OS
    Can anyone help please?

  • Printer disappearing after reboot

I have several Windows 2008R2 Citrix Xenapp 6.5 servers. I am trying to install a Midmark PDF printer. I can install it fine, but when I reboot the server, it just goes away. Does anybody have any ideas? I have been using the install package from
Midmark, but I also tied it manually, (it uses the Amyuni Doc Converter 400 and the null port.) I can manually add it, but again on reboot, the thing disappears out of Devices and Printers. Midmark doesn't have any suggestions. On ONE citrix server it actually
stays. I am not sure of the difference (if any) between the server where it stays and the others where it disappears on reboot. Anybody have any suggestions?

    Hello David ,
I assume Midmark PDF is tools to take print out in PDF format from Midmark application ,if so have you contacted midmark tech team ?
Could you please let us know if you have installed any other printer except Midmark PDF and what about your print spool service after restart.
If print services are running fine check event log related to that and share with us ,mean time you may uninstall  Mid mark and try ABBYY PDF transformer+ ,By doing this you can come to conclusion  if any compatibility problem have .This product
is easy to use and save time due to the some good features and way of doing. If you are using msoffice then I hope you will like the plugin features of ABBYY PDF transformer+(http://download.abbyy.com/pdft_plus/).

  • Odd terminal-gui error messages on intel that disappear with reboot

Occasionally I get error messages of the following form when running something from the command line that interacts with the GUI:

    ispidnative: sysctlbynamewithpid failed:Operation not permitted

    sysctlbynamewithpid: sysctl failed:Operation not permitted
    ispidnative: sysctlbynamewithpid failed:Operation not permitted
    </pre>
This appears to be harmless (what I am doing still works), and disappears upon reboot, but it seems to indicate some kernel communication problem.
(The first of these is TextMate's command line utility, and the second is a gui that displays directories in a stack that Wataru and I made with Pashua, so I doubt it is specific to any particular app. Both are universal binaries.)
Any idea what is going on?

  • Both Firefox & Thunderbird won't reopen after closing. require reboot

When I close Firefox or Thunderbird, they do not reopen later. Dialog box says they are still running, but process won't close in task manager. System requires reboot to get back in

Maybe your security (Anti-virus) software is checking files while Firefox is starting and takes so much time that Firefox can't access them and decides to skip loading those locked files. If that happens with sqlite database files like places.sqlite then bookmarks won't work properly. A second start works because the AV software had already checked the file. So you need to check the rules for Firefox in your security software.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.
