TimeMachine missing backups when installing Leopard Disk

Hi all. My Macbook crashed today and after seeing a Genius at the local Macshop i was advised i had to do a total reinstall using the MacO/S 10 users disk, then after that i had to use the install DVD Leopard disk.
I did all this and it went fine. But because i wanted to re-install all my lost data with TimeMachine I was directed insert the Leopard DVD then to go to "Utilites", then "Restore System from Backup", then "Select a Backup."
It was then i discovered my external hard-drives most recent back-up with TimeMachine was dated Feb 6, 2008, then Jan 22, then Jan 15, then Jan 8, then Dec 16, 2007.
Ive been using the same hard-drive for the last year and when I launch TimeMachine from the desktop or dock it tells me that it has backups for every day this year. It is only when i install the Leopard installation DVD and go to "Select a Backup" I find the most recent backup date i am able to use is Feb 6, which is basically useless. Like i said if i launch TimeMachine from my desktop i can see it appears to have everything backed-up since december of last year.
Since all the data i needed was from around May i am now manually going through TimeMachine and re-installing everything individually rather than being able to do a one click re-install of my data through the "Select a Backup" on the install disk.
What I cant figure out is if i am able to find the individual files and restore them manually through TimeMachine on my desktop then why is there not a copy of a more recent backup when i use the Leopard Disk and try and "Select a Backup" then?
Basically is there something i have to do each week in order for TimeMachine to do a whole backup because it appears from december to feb 6 to have backups then from then till now to have stopped.
Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,
and you need to configure netbackup to allow client
"clone system" to access backups from client "production system".
On the client you like to restore issue a
echo #NULL | backint -u SID -p /oracle/SID/102_64/dbs/initSID.utl -f inquire
This should list the items the client sees on the netbackup server.
If you do not see anything, your netbackup cxlient configuration is not yet correct.
After the above works, you can either restore backSID.log or copy it
over from source, if that system is still alive. But if you like to have a desaster test,
you should learn how to restore these items, instead of copying them over for ease of process.

  • WARNING!!! Backup before installing Leopard

I've had 2 of my 3 Macs crash will installing Leopard corrupting the hard drive. I had to reformat both and lost all of the data.
During the install, I got an error message that Leopard was unable to complete the installation but I was unable to restart the computer. I worded with Apple tech support during the first failure which required reformatting the hard drive. The 2nd computer installed normally but the 3rd crashed also.
Word to the wise, back up everything before doing the Leopard install.
    FYI: I LOVE Leopard

To Apple's credit, they do warn people to do a complete backup before installing Leopard as well as all OS updates. For what its worth, I installed Leopard on three Macs and all three worked fine.

Before I put it away I wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled system software plus extra aps like Photoshop. I can't get the CD to stay in the slot.
What can I do to keep the CD in so I can install Leopard?

  • Getting files from Tiger "Backup" after installing Leopard

    I have just done an
"Erase and Install" of Leopard 10.5.1 on a MacBook. I had backed up mmay files using the program "Backup" in my older Tiger OS - backed up to both an external drive and to Apple's iDisk.
Since "backup" is not provided with Leopard (which has Time Machine, I guess) how do I restore old files from the files archived by "Backup"?
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the Apple forums:
Did your backup create a .dmg image? If so, you simply mount it and all the files and folders will be plainly visible. This is what you get if you used disk utility.app
In addition, Leopard has a backup utility, which, I presume, is Tiger compatible. It's in the applications folder - it has an umbrella on it. Backup.app. This may be the one you used in Tiger.
Either way, you will easily be able to get your old files back with a minimum of effort.

  • Finder not taking into account local backups when reporting free disk space

Time Machine in Lion (10.7.2) stores local backups of files on your laptop's hard drive when it is not connected to an external Time Machine backup drive. See this article for more information.
If you click on the Apple in the top-left corner of your screen and choose About This Mac > More Info > Storage, you will see exactly how much space your local "Backups" are taking (along with other useful info about how your hard drive space is being used).
Interestingly, the amount of free HD space listed there differes from the amount of free space Finder says is available (when you choose View > Show Status Bar to display it). The amount that it differs is exactly the same as the amount of the local "Backups." So, it appears that Finder is not taking those local Backus into account when it displays free disk space.
So, Finder is telling me I have almost 100 gigs MORE free space than I actually have. I would prefer Finder to show me how much space I have AFTER the local Backups are taken into account.

The article that you linked to gives the rationale for this:
Note: You may notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. This is expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed.

I m traveling and cant take my other computer.

I ve tried installing it many time and tried many versions, but no results.

  • Crash and loss of local backups when installing 5.01

Recently plugged my ipad 2 into the usb slot to charge and perform the update to 5.01 and whatever other updates itunes had waiting. I just followed the prompts and installed whatever was asked first. It seems that at some stage during the 5.01 update progress was frozen. The ipad just showed the apple logo with a 0% progress bar. To be frank I wasn't 100% focussed on the task. I had backups of the ipads' contents so how baldy could things so right? Eventually itunes reported some error message. I still didn't worry too much but when I achnowledged the message, my ipad no longer appeared under 'devices' in itunes.
So far I've tried restarting my computer and rebooting itunes but the only option appears to be to 'restore' to 'original settings' which seems to mean I lose my data. The dialog says I've searched the forums but I'm yet to find anyone who's lost there backups with this update.
I would like to make it perfect clear that I have data on this ipad that I do not want to lose. For this very reason I backed it up with itunes. I would like to know where my backups are and how I can restore them? What is the purpose of maing these backups if they dissapear when something goes wrong?

Thanks for your answer. I did manage to locate the backup directories in the location you mentioned. BTW I do backup many files from my computer but generally not backups of backups of backups.... I guess I didn't think this update this could screw up so badly.
So does anyone know if it is possible to restore my ipad using these backup files? At the moment itunes doesn't even recognise that it was ever connected to an ipad device. I'm really new to the whole apple way of doing things and it doesn't seem like there is a lot of scope to delve 'under the hood'.
On another note would it be possible for me to just return the device as faulty? This is the second time this has happened. It doesn't seem reasonable that I should have to live with the fear of random system wipes with every update that comes along?

  • Missing backups when trying to restore

    Hey everyone,
We are trying to test our backups / restores on a clone backup system.
We took a backup of the original system using brtools/backed up to netbackup, and in we could see the netbackup utility took the backup well, and the backup was listed as successful in db12.
However, when trying to restore this on the clone system, only 2 backups seem to come up when trying to restore the whole database...  both these backups are very old (and ones we did to disk before netbackup backup was setup).
Does anyone know what I could look at (I'm out of ideas) in terms of why BRTOOLS cannot see the backup in netbackup?
Any help at this point would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks

  • Missing datasources when installing Business Content

    Hi All
We have a requirement for a number of SBC infoproviders (BI7/ECC6) which are new to us.
The majority we have installed successfully but we are having problems with 0SLL_C01 / C02 and C03 which relate to Customs and 0BVTSD02 which is a Telephones Sales Acitivity DSO from the Beverage Industries area.
We have 'successfully' installed all the data flows down to the infosource level but none of the datasources were installed.
On re-checking in our source system RSA5/RSA6 we realised there were no datasources available for these infosources.
How do you add business content datasources to your source system so they are available? or have we missed a process?
    Thanks
    Jerry

    Hi Jerry,
The Datasource you are talking about is related to release of SAP GTS 3.0  pack.
So please check with you basis team whether they have installed this plug-in in your source system.
If these release /plug-in are not installed in your sourcce system you wont be able to finf it in the RSA5/RSA6.
    Thanks and Regards

  • System crashes when installing games via DVD Writer

When installing multi-disk games / programs pc freezes after putting in second disk - I have tried various other optical drives (IBM 8x CDROM - Pioneer 107 and of course NEC3500) but I have no joy - system just hangs and requires a power off/on to restart.
Tried SATA hard drive but still same problem - tried different cpu 2.8 Northwood - but still no joy.
It does not crash all the time and the games that are on it work fine for any length of time - I have PC alert installed and CPU and system temperature dont go above 51 C
I have installed the games on another pc and they work fine so its not the disks.
    please help

Hmm, I hope you fixed your problem regarding installation..and maybe the freezing now is a totally seperate problem?  Honestly, at this point...I would reformat everything, even update the BIOS if you haven't done so already.  This time though, I wouldn't install anything except the bare essentials (WinXP w/o SP2...vid and sound drivers....no MSI extras)  Then install a game or two and test out your crashing then.
I know it's a pain to reformat...but when things get rough, you reformat!
    Good luck!

Your problem is not Boot Camp, in fact, is your optical drive. Win XP requires indeed sp2, but also the internal drive, does not work from external optical drive.
For other possible tricks, please use the appropriate Boot Camp forum, not here. Mac OS X may be installed from both external and internal optical drive and/or internal/external partition of a disk, any disk. Windows is not so generous.
