Timing Java Apps on Portable Devices and Desktops

I am trying find an efficient way to time my Java applications running on Linux on portable devices like Pocket PCs and other hand held computers. I also need to time the running of applications on desktop and laptop computers and compare the two. I am conducting research to find out if Java runs slower on smaller processors in comparison to larger ones. I am looking for either research or a program that can help me to accomplish this. I have looked at JProbe but I would prefer an option that doesn't involve buying software. Are there any basic programing languages that offer this option? Does the JVM allow timing test to be conducted by itself? Is Java a good language to make a timing program with or should I look elsewhere. If you have any information please let me know.

- if LMS will collect students responses to a Captivate training exercise?
- and further allow our system to access and evaluate their responses?
- And, do they charge per student or what?
2 - You said "You can run Captivate without Internet . It is just you have to connect to the internet during the installation to sign in with your Adobe ID."
Does this mean a student would have to connect to the internet and install Captivate and get an Adobe ID?
I was trying to ask here if there were no internet connectivity... or limited connectivity... could a Captivate Training Exercise be placed on a PC or Tablet or Smartphone... and run at will by the student like it was an actual computer program... all without the student having to own Captivate.

Hi - I am not sure if this is the right place for this question, but maybe someone can help me out. My school district purchased an app that can be loaded on up to 5 devices. The district does not have their own Itunes account, so it was loaded on to someones personal Itunes account (with all of her personal purchases as well). I am trying to figure out how to get just this app onto my device, and then not have to use her account for anything else? My question then is, once she loads it onto my IPad, how do I go and sync to a different ITunes account - is that even possible? Hope this makes sense to someone....! Any help would be appreciated.

Java app with web service and servlets

Hi. I intend to make a java application which exposes some methods as a web service and as jsp/servlets. It's core functionality is not really web centric, but its more a java app with a web tier. I am not sure about how the architecture of such a system would look like using the java platform. I currently see three options:
1. Run everything in a servlet container like tomcat. I hesitate to do this because i would be putting a lot of functionality which isn't about the web into a servlet container. Also, I have a lot of application scope data that is maintained and shared by all servlets/web services. However, it would be really easy just to put everything into tomcat and use ServletContext to maintain some global objects.
2. Use a Java EE to seperate application/business logic and data access into session beans and entity beans. I hesitate to this because it seem a bit overkill because the system isn't very big or complex right now. It also means that I would have to learn to use EJB's instead of just using some POJOs.
3. Run the web tier in a servlet container and the main app in a separate JVM, and then connect the tier by sending serialized objects over TCP sockets. I don't like writing network code but at least there is some separation of the tiers.
What would you do? Maybe I have overlooked a much better solution to the problem?
Let me just say that the system is the product of a student project spanning one semester, so it's important to choose the RIGHT solution (architectural-wise) instead of the something quick and dirty that is hard to defend.

HOTSYNC freezes on both Tungsten T5 device and desktop

I recently wipe out all data on my Tungsten T5 device and re-setup for my daughter. I installed the desktop software on the my home computer running Windows XP Pro (SP2) and also downloaded and installed version 4.1.4e. The Step 1 desktop software installation seem to be fine. When I plug in the USB cable connecting the device to the computer, it seem to be recognized. So when I press hotsync on the device like it tells me to on Step 2, the device says "Synchronizing ..." and the Desktop Hotsync manager says "Determining Device Configuration...". It doesn't seem like there's anything happening as both the device and the desktop will remain in the same state even after I leave it for 24 hrs. I had to press cancel on the device which cancels after a few minutes, but the desktop message remains the same, even after I press cancel. I have to try many, many times to end/close the hotsync application using the task manager before successfully cancelling the desktop hotsync application. It gets worse. I then tried to uninstall the Palm Desktop and it will uninstall to a certain point and encounters an error with the Palm.msi (I believe that's the name of the file) and will automatically stop the uninstall and restore the files and registries. At this point I tried the clean uninstall procedures that was posted and reinstall the desktop software again and repeated the hotsync process - same result, much to my disappointment. It's supposed to be a present for my jr high daughter but not working out so well. Any suggestions?

When you state you wiped out all the data, did you do a hard reset of the handheld?

There are a million ppl having this problem right now and it seems like Apple is ignoring it. It's been real bad since May, even worse that last week or so. Basically all we can do is sit and wait to see what excuse or help, if any, will be given. I've used a Walmart pre-paid card and I'm sorry, but who really incorrectly types a 3 digit number a million times?! Also my account is saying I owe iTunes $40 for in-app purchases. Bull!! My card sends me a balance twice a day via text and because of this, I know what, where, and how my money is being spent. Also it's pre-paid, how can you have an over draft?!?! Here's a real kicker though...my card balance is in the positive!!! Hmmm, obviously not a fault on my part, the part of my card, nor my iPod. It's all in the system!!!

October 2008: How and where to start developing for portable device

Okay people. Seriously where the heck do i get started here?
I downloaded
- JEdit to use as the editor
- Tomcat 6 for the web server
- Suns Java Wireless Toolkit 2.5.2 for CLDC
But, I can not find a single tutorial that actually functions and is not riddled with errors.
Can someone please post URLs to something that they have actually used and not just oh here is a tutorial i saw.

I dont know how this may seem, but I think there is a difference between developing for portable device and developing for the MIDP devices.
All the tutorials I could lay my hands on are talking about the MIDP profile as well and I have found one on say Personal Profile or others.
Can anyone clear me on this issue?

This is needed for work but I get this message. From home it works perfectly. My guess is our proxy is blocking something. I have no control over the proxy so I need to knw what to tell our network engineer so this can be opened if this is indeed the case.

Just now I uninstalled the Sun Java Studio Creator and deleted all directories related to it, then re-installed.
I don't know why, but It is just ok now.

Portable Device will not playback all tracks loaded into dev

Zen V 4GB, now has 3.8 MB of tracks in it, but when we playback in car or thru headphones, it barely plays half the contents; in fact, cannot even access the tracks to select the hidden tracks(!) for playback, because we can't find them. We know they're in there only because it - the entire list, approx 800 tracks - appears on screen, when we connect device to pc screen. Noticed, while on pc, the tracks that don't show up in portable player, are marked "protected". Is this why? How do we 'unprotect' them? We know the protected files are in tact and working well, as we tested them -but only by transferring them into iTunes. Help!/ccreids

Portable device unknown device WPD filesystem volume driver

i have an HP pavilion slimline model s5213w. its running on windows 7. lately ive been having an issue with my computer recognizing portable devices and i never had this problem before. when i go to device manager it gives me a code 18 which says reinstall the driver, which i try to do and it tells me i have the best software for the driver. ive tried uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling then it gives me a code1 which says the device is not configured correctly, so i configure it and then back to square one with the code 18 for reinstalling the driver. i believe i am missing a file somewhere or a file is corrupted. im so aggravated with this that im contemplating letting the computer go for a swim in the pool! please please please help. thank u

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management.
Open Disk Management., Check to see if drive letters are assigned to the portable drives.
If no, assign drive letters and see if that helps.

Try closing the app via the device's multitasking bar and see if it works when you re-open the app : double-click the home button to open the taskbar and then swipe or drag the app's 'screen' up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.
If the app still doesn't work then try deleting the app from your device and redownload it (assuming that it's still in the store) via the Purchased tab in the App Store app - or resync it from your computer's iTunes (if you don't have a copy of the app in the Apps part of your computer's iTunes library then copy it over via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases before deleting it).
If that also doesn't get it to work then contact the developer.

Apps on multiple devices/moving apps

Anyone know if we will be able to put bought apps on more than one device? I plan to get an iPhone and it would be nice to have the same software on that.
Alternatively is there some way of removing an app from one device and putting it on another instead? You can do this if you upgrade to a new computer for example. For example if I sell my iPod Touch, can I move its apps to my new Touch/Phone etc?

My wife and I both have iPhones and we have a Touch...if only we could have rented a Touch for a couple weeks, its what convinced my wife to buy an iPhone Anyway, the Apps we buy work on all three devices because her computer is one of the computers authorized under my iTunes account.

Drag and Drop file FROM Java app TO native desktop

I'm a litte new to Drag and Drop. After a few days of looking around I've been through enough examples to copy and paste some skeleton code and get it working in my own application.
What I haven't gotten any answers to (after searching on google, newsgroups, and here) is if it's possible to drag something from a Java app to the desktop or file browser, and have java create a file there.
I know you can drag text to native apps, so I was wondering if you could make a Transferable object that's different than StringSelection(), like a file stream or something.

I am trying to drag a single item from a JList to a text editor, Word, etc. I have two problems:
1) I can't seem to get just the item in the JList to drag. It wants to drag the entire JList component.
2) How does one define the remote application as the drop target? Have not found any examples either.
Is the drop target actually the system clipboard?

I use GoodReader on my iPad and use the GoodReaderUSB tool. the GoodReaderUSB tool allows you to transfer entire folders into GoodReader without loosing the folder/file structure.

I am using windows vista home premium 32 bit First time I pluged nikon camera into computer. Says installing device driver software but it does not install. Device manger under portable device digital still camera yellow question mark error code 31 under mass storage device error code 41. The device driver loads and installs on my daughters Laptop so ther is some thing wrong with my PC Every time I reboot computer windows need to intall driver software for your Microsoft WPD file system volume driver. Loacate and install driver software recomended says installing driver says successfully installed. I have to click Safely remove hardware usb mass stoage device multi flash reader usb device generic volume f I click stop says safe to remove I do not have a reader plugged in my computer. this happens every time I reboot> If you don't understand what I am talking about Let me know.

I'm sorry you're running into this issue. For the camera, if it's newer (made in the last 3 or 4 years) you may need to go to the Nikon website and find the camera software that is made for Vista. I could try to help you find that, if you could give me the model of camera you have.
For the Microsoft WPD file system volume driver issue take a look at this thread from another forum.
