Portable device unknown device WPD filesystem volume driver

i have an HP pavilion slimline model s5213w.  its running on windows 7. lately ive been having an issue with my computer recognizing portable devices and i never had this problem before. when i go to device manager it gives me a code 18 which says reinstall the driver, which i try to do and it tells me i have the best software for the driver. ive tried uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling then it gives me a code1 which says the device is not configured correctly, so i configure it and then back to square one with the code 18 for reinstalling the driver. i believe i am missing a file somewhere or a file is corrupted. im so aggravated with this that im contemplating letting the computer go for a swim in the pool! please please please help. thank u

HI,
Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management.
Open Disk Management., Check to see if drive letters are assigned to the portable drives.
If no, assign drive letters and see if that helps.

  • WPD FileSystem volume driver has a driver problem (code 10)

    Hi,
My laptop is a window 7, I always use a D-Link modem for internet. Previously the modem was well working and with high speed, also there was no problem with connections. Few weeks i  encountered a problem with connection in my modem.
I have tried to troubleshoot and discovered that there is a problem with WPD FileSystem Volume Driver, the device manager displays a message that it can't start with an error code 10 together with a yellow exclamation. When i try to proceed  i get instruction
of uninstalling and re-installing the WPD FileSystem Volume Driver, the issue is that i get the option for uninstalling it but i don't know how to re-install it.
Please i need your help to solve this.
    Regards,
    Mkashiwa.

    Hi,
After uninstall the driver from Device Manager, reboot your PC and let Windows automaticallly re-install the driver for you.
    What is the result?

  • SD Card Reader is Identified as WPD FileSystem Volume Driver and will not read SD card(s).

    HP Pavillion Elite-110f Desktop PC
    Windows 7 64-bit
In Device Manager "This device cannot start."
Temporarily Used MiniTool Patition Wizard to repartition my SD card for my Android phone. When I noticed issue, I uninstalled the program. Windows Disk Management see's the SD Card; Ubuntu sees the SD card; yet it doesn't appear in "Computer." Thus I cannot transfer files.
I have reinstalled all AMD Motherboard Drivers and Alcor USB 2.0 drivers. Issue still remains.
    This question was solved.

Maybe you are missing the SD card reader driver. When you plug your SD card reader in the computer, it will automtically install a compatible driver for your SC card reader to work and to read your card data. If the driver isn't installer properly, your card reader won't work. Use Windows Update to update the driver, alternatively, you can try DriveTheLife. • WPD Filesystem Driver Update error!

I have recently bought a 120GB Classic and it works okay, syncs okay, and is recognised by both the PC and itunes, but every time i connect it, my computer tries to update/install driver software for the Microsoft WPD Filesystem Volume Driver, and every time it fails, telling me to contact the manufacturer in order to resolve the problem.
I've since scoured the internet for possible solutions, and none have worked so far. I need to get this sorted out ASAP as it's becoming very irritating each time I sync my ipod!! Has anybody else suffered this problem, and if so, how did you resolve it?

Well I'm very pleased to say that I've managed to stop this from happening, and here's how:
1.Open Start Menu and right click on Computer
    2. Select Manage which will open Device Manager window
3.Right-click on the unknown device symbol (which should have a yellow exclamation mark on it)
    4.Select Disable
    Problem solved.

  • My iphone 4s would either show up in itunes or as a portable device..

    i desperately need help.
i plugged in my iphone 4s into my PC running on XP, but it only appeared in itunes.
it does not start the auto play to prompt me if i wanted to open the files in my phone. i went to "my computer" but could not find the iphone on a separate drive. i gave up on the XP now, but the same thing happens when i plug it into my other PC with Win 7.
when plugged in, it shows that a software is being intalled. Half way thru it, it stops, and i am shown a message that the MTP USB Device os not working.
i cannot transfer my photos from the phone, so how to sync?
i tried all ways, even called the helpdesk but they told me they have never experienced such problems.i even had my set changed.
still, the phone shows up in itunes when plugged into the pc, but not as a different drive.
i have to unplug the phone and reconnect it again, then I had to go into "device manager" to open the MTP USB Device which would show up under the portable device.
then, i have to disable it, and enable it, to allow the auto play to run, so that i can transfer my photos from the phone.
this doesnt seem right.... my iphone 4 does not work this way, when i plug it into my PC, the itunes would run, and at the same time, the auto play would come on as well and i could easily transfer the pictures...
what on earth is going on????
anyone knows the solution to it?
also, when itunes runs, it prompts me to upgrade and install the newer version. after 40 min, it always show that my phone is not compatible with the firmware.. what does this mean???? what do i have to do???
    thanks... appreciate some advice.

today i went to my local telco and they too cannot resolve the problem.
they took out 3 new sets and plugged it into their pc. same thing, if it shows up in itunes, it does not show up at the other drive.
so how to transfer my photos? they dont even have an answer for me.
my colique has a 4s that works perfectly fine. when plugged into the pc, it shows up both in the itunes as well as a portable device on the other drive AT THE SAME TIME!

  • N80 vista x64 portable device driver

    Hi,
When connecting the N80 to USB and selecting "Media Player" mode, vista doesnt find an appropriate driver. I installed nokia suite 6.83. I remember that this worked at somepoint, but I somehow managed to delete the nokia n80 entry via uninstall from the Device Manager->Portable Devices. It now shows up under Device Manager->Other Devices with an "exclamation mark". If I right-click and do an "Update Driver Software...", vista doesnt find anything. Forcing it to use the "Portable Devices->Nokia Windows Portable Device Driver" doesnt really help either: windows media player 11 doesnt show the device to sync with.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    I would try re-installing the PC-suite.
My favorite N80 applications: Nokia Mobile Search, Smart2go Beta,
    S60 Internet Radio, Mobile Weather.
    N80ie Firmware: V 4.0707.0.7 (March 28, 2007).

  • TS1538 I do not have the Driver folder in this folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support like it says I should and myApple Iphone appears in Portable Devices. I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it.

I do not have the Driver folder in this folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support like it says I should and my Apple Iphone appears in Portable Devices only, not in Universal devices. I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. My Iphone is still not recognized by Itunes when I plug it in. I can see my photos in the internal storage folder on my Windows 7 system though. So I know my PC sees the device. The Iphoneis an Iphone 4 with IOS 6 installed. It was working fine until I had to reinstall my Windows system. Now Itunes does not see it. I've uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled it (64bit) to no avail. Where is the Driver folder article TS1538 talks about?

Sorry I missed your post. Anyone else with the same issue should find useful resources at Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

  • "NOKIA WINDOWS PORTABLE DEVICE DRIVER" on PC Suite...

I just upgraded my pc suite from 6.82 to 6.83. I have Windows Media Player11 installed. Almost the PC Suite setup was complete... Just when windows found a new hardware called "NOKIA WINDOWS PORTABLE DEVICE". But for full installation it requirs the prefered drivers to be installed. But it didn't found that i guess ! So it showed me an error msg.."The device can't be inslled" So, I opened device manager and unistalled "N70"(My phone) under portable devices. Then I reconnected my phone...and started Add new hardware wizard...At last the portable device installed ..But then I got another msg..which says..In future this device may not work properly !
Then I reopened device manager and under portable devices i found N70 which was installed succesfully..but the main one "Nokia windows portable devices" had an exclamanation mark and the status was "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" ! So...what the hell is this and if i had to download the previous version again..then how could i ?
    CoOL

Same here - Windows XP, Nokia N70, PC Suite 6.83. Very annoying. Found that the answer was to uninstall software and throw PC out of Window. Drove over phone then dropped it from an upstairs window. Finally plunged phone into icy water and cursed it until green in the face.
Also, found out that reinstalling the software seemed to cure it. Had to go to device manager first and delete the Nokia N70 device that Windows had placed under 'Portable devices'

    Hey poochokid,
I'm sorry you're running into this issue. For the camera, if it's newer (made in the last 3 or 4 years) you may need to go to the Nikon website and find the camera software that is made for Vista. I could try to help you find that, if you could give me the model of camera you have.
For the Microsoft WPD file system volume driver issue take a look at this thread from another forum.
I hope this information helps! Let me know what the results are

  • WDM upper filter for "Windows Portable Devices" device class

    Hi folks,
I have a WDM filter driver, based on WDK toaster sample, that I am using to filter portable devices (mainly Phones), as upper filter. During AddDevice phase, I am querying device properties (such Description, Manufacturer and so on) and then attaching
to device. I can see the IRP_MN_START_DEVICE, which I send down to next lower driver after setting a completion routine.
This is working fine on most of the machines I am testing on, but on some systems (every XP and some Windows 7 and Server 2008), when I send the IRP_MN_START_DEVICE down to next driver, I get a STATUS_DEVICE_CONFIGURATION_ERROR, so this is preventing the
device from being installed in the first place.
I have managed to overcome this error by editing the hardware ID registry key for the device and creating "UpperDriverOk" and "KernelModeClientPolicy" values, setting them to 1.
This way the device starts without issues and I can filter it as normal.
Now, I am aware of Portable Devices being managed by an UMDF driver, but does that explains the issue with Start Device phase?
I haven't found any differences between those systems with the issue and those that are working fine without needing the "registry values" workaround.
Is there any system setting or service configuration that might be helping (or ruining) this filtering scenario?
Would it be possible to apply the "KernelModeClientPolicy" workaround for the whole system and not separately for every single Phone device?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi Kumar, thanks for your response.
By "inbox WPD driver" you mean the 3rd party driver that controls the WPD device, right?
Is that policy mandatory? Because when I plug my Nokia Lumia 520, I don't see that value set in registry.
Anyway, what I would like to know is, why is IRP_MN_START_DEVICE failing in Server 2008, and working fine in Windows 7, with the same device and the same WDM filter?
    Thanks!

  • Portable Device blocking Policy issue

    Hi,
We have recently applied GPO to block Portable devices using GP setting under computer configuration/admin tools/system/removable storage devices/WPD devices
We have also created exception policy based on group membership.
We have some of the users who uses Windows CE devices for business purpose. The policy was applied on them as well for which those devices were also blocked. We have later added those PC's to exception group and the policy was reverted back as we can see
from RSOP.MSC but the devices are still inaccessible and giving error that "you does not have permission to access the device"
Also the DVD burning softwares are not able to identify the DVD drives but those are visible in My Computer. I am not sure why this kind of issue happened even when the policy is rolled back.
We have deleted the GPO history and tried but no use. Even we have disjoined the PC from Domain but the issue remains.
If we do system restore to old date then it starts working.
I am not able to understand is it because of policies or something else

    Hi,
As far as I know, if we configure any settings under Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access
The following registry entry should be created:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\RemovableStorageDevices
If we configure any settings under User Configuration\ Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access
The following registry entry should be created:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\RemovableStorageDevices
Under these two entries, there should be GUIDs for the corresponding policy settings we have configured. After clicking a GUID, we should be able to see the registry value
    for the policy setting.
In this case, if we enable WPD Devices: Deny read access or Deny write access, the value of Deny_Read or Deny_write should be 1, and if we disable WPD Devices: Deny read access
or Deny write access, the value of Deny_Read or Deny_write should be 0.
Besides, if we don’t configure any settings under Computer Configuration and User Configuration\ Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access, there should
    be no such registry entries.
    Best regards,
    Frank Shen

  • I am trying to transfer photos from a portable device, why don't they go to I photo?

I want to transfer photos from a portable device to my iMac. They don't seem to go to iPhoto, but as another file..I then cannot move them to iPhoto, and am struggling to then upload to my iPad! Any advise?

It's possible the default upload location got changed from your device. Connect the device (flash drive, camera, phone or whatever you're using) then launch Image Capture (look in your Applications folder) then in the lower left you will see a small down arrow, click it then locate iPhoto in the box and you should be set.

  • I am not able to open my portable device

    hi
recently i have upgraded from windows xp to windows 7
but even then the portable device(pendrive) use to open for some days
but now its not at all opening
the error is that always i get a message
THIS OPERATION HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO RESTRICTION IN EFFECT ON THIS COMPUTER.
    PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR
i have tried to login as administrator but i even could not do that
    so plz help me

    Hi,
I would like to know that if your computer has joined into a domain.
Please check whether the following group policy is enabled on USB device:
Group Policy Management Editor > User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > System > Prevent access to drives from My Computer
I also consider that if the problem is related to the pendrive itself:
    1. Check whether this pendrive can be used on another computer.
    2. Check whether other USB device or drive can be used on this computer.
Post back after you check out my suggestions.

  • HT4528 iphone 5 not recognized as portable device in Windows 7 ultimate (64)

My iPhone 5 refuses to show up under my computer as a portable device, but syncs perfectly with itunes 11.0.1.12.  Oddly, my wife's iPhone shows up on her Dell XPS 9100 which is also running W7U x64.  I have a newer version of the same PC (the only real major difference being an intel 990x hexacore processor in mine vs the wife's quadcore 930 but I can't imagine why that would make any difference).  I thought that maybe the apple mobile device driver needed to be updated but that's not it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but no luck.  I find it extremely odd that my iPod touch 5 gen is actually showing up as it should. Since my iPhone is now my primary everyday camera for quick snapshots (carrying my SLR for other than specialty photos is far too cumbersome), I need to be able to transfer my pictures.  I could try the wife's computer but would prefer to save my pics on my computer and not have to transfer from hers to save time.  Anyone have any ideas?

I FIGURED IT OUT. THANK FREAKING GOD!
    This is what I did:
I went to control panel and unistalled iTunes completely, then I installed 10.6.3
http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes which you can find here
It came up with an error saying that my library had beed used with a more updated verision, basically had to upgrade. I installed iTunes 10.7
After it had installed and iTunes was running I hooked up both my iPhone and my flash drive, I have more than 1 usb port I figure most computers do now, and by the time and date in the bottom right corner a small icon came up showing that I had devices hooked up. It showed both my iPhone (but did not know what it was) and my flash drive. If you right click on the iPhone it has the option to Troubleshoot it. I did it and my iPhone 5 now FINALLY SYNCS!
    I'm sooo happy now.
