Tips on making  movies smaller

We are created a Flash banner for a client that has a maximum
size of 20k. And of course, the client wants War & Peace on the
banner along with about 10 images which maxes out at 120k (don't
ask, we've already told them it won't work).
We've imported the images we need to use as PNGs
We set all they type inside of Flash.
Are there any techniques to keep the file as small as
possible? I know were going to need to trim the animation down but
if there are any tricks & techniques you can pass along, I'd
appreciate it.
-K

Have you generated a size report to see where all the bits
and bytes are coming from? Certain fonts can contribute a lot to
file size. Other tips that sometimes work: make sure everything
that moves is a movie clip, not a Group or a Graphic. And if you
can use ActionScript for as much of the animation as possible that
will keep things down.
Speaking as someone who has created over 300 banners for
Yahoo and hundreds of e-cards for major e-card sites who also
impose file size limits, the ultimate solution is:
Tell the client "No. You can't do that." Some people are
afraid to confront or even scold clients. Consider it educating
them. Often they really appreciate it, because they end up
understanding a bit more about the process and can make more
informed suggestions in the future. You wouldn't believe how many
times I've done so. They might sulk a little bit, but them they
usually come back after a pause and ask: "So...what do YOU think
the solution is?"

  • Any new tips for making Garageband run quicker (Delay/Lag)?

    Hey all
    AI was just wondering if anyone had come up with any new tips for making Garageband run quicker? Theres such a delay form when I move the cursor or press play to when anything actually happens.
    Ive tried everything here
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/FAQPages/Optimize.html
    But its not really made anything quicker
    I don't know where this option is though?
    Make sure your Energy Saver System Prefs is set to Highest Performance, if this is an option
    I'm not using any effects/plugins (yet) on my song, but will start mixing EQing/using plugins soon so need to try and stop
    It really slowed down when I recorded (and copy pasted) a load of handclaps into it over the entire song and onto multiple tracks.
    I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Ive got 120GB of space left on my 500GB hard drive
    Any ideas or newer tips anyone?
    I'm running 39 tracks by the way.
    Thanks

  • I created a ringtone successfully and assigned it to a contact, but the default ring always answers, I've tried deleting the contact, and also shutting the phone down completely, but neither has worked. One tip mentioned making sure format was correct??

    I assigned a ringtone to a contact but the default answers.  I've tried deleting the contact and reinstalling it and  shutting the phone down (holding the home button in and the top button until apple icon appears), One tip mentioned making sure the format was correct. ???  Any suggestions?  The ringtone itself works if used as a default, but when I assign it to this contact, no dice.

    First thing to always do is write a Certified Return Receipt letter or just copy the post you made and send it to Verizon Wireless and dispute it in writing.
    Then walk down to your local court and file a small claims court case against Verizon for all the fraudulent charges. Verizon will call you before that court case and then it may be possible to get this wiped off your account.
    Also file a BBB complaint http://www.bbb.org
    Again Verizon will contact you to offer to settle. Get the settlement in writing not verbal. Or proceed to court.
    Sorry you are going through hell for something you should never have had to go through.
    Good Luck

  • Making movies with SLR stills in FCE4

    Does any one have any sources of information for making movies using still images… not stills captured from movies, but stills taken using a 'still' camera either digital or scanned from film for time lapse movies and multimedia slideshows. I'm particularly interested in issues of quality both importing images and exporting the final product, this is the thing I have the most trouble with. I know it's possible to get fantastic results I've seen them on the web… Magnum in Motion, VII, Media Storm etc but all the advice I can find is not to surprisingly 99% aimed at video movie making.
    One other thing; I'm currently using iMovie 09 which is fine as far as it goes but I'm finding it a bit of a battle and am considering trying FCE 4 as it seems a little more intuitive and capable. I have read in a couple of reviews people complaining about the constant need to render and wonder how much of this is down to developing a sensible work flow and getting the hang of the software. As far as I can see from the tutorials most of the filters etc can be previewed without rendering. How does this particular factor compare with other products out there by Adobe for example?
    Sorry for the long question… I don't expect long answers!
    Matt.

    I recommend Photo to Movie to make movies out of still images. I looked at a number of different products including iPhoto, iMovie, FCE and decided on Photo to Movie. The feature set is strong with good transition, motion, audio, etc features and the usual range of output options.
    It's strong point is the image quality of the output whether for TV, web or computer - seems to be better than most other options at higher prices.
    Learning it is relatively easy to get started but there's enough capability to reach the movie making production of more expensive products. There's the demo option to let to test before buying. It is inexpensive for what you get. Support and advice can be requested and is given quickly and personally.

  • What format camcorder for video editing. Making movies?

    My 14 yr old son is into making movies. He needs a better camcorder. He makes stop motion movies as well as scripted movies with props. He edits them on his computer and some are really good, especially after he ads special effects to them.
    I want to get him a better camera for filiming. Preferrably not over $600 or so. What is the best format video camera for editing on the computer and one that is good for shooting movies. It should have a spot light on it I assume for low light contitions, even though he sets up lights sometimes when he shoots.
    Any suggestions as what I should get him? Thanks in advanced.
    Aranon

    The HF200, along with all other decent high definition camcorders that use flash memory, DVDs, or hard drives, uses AVCHD.  And yes, AVCHD is difficult to work with for two reasons:
    1)  Many software packages didn't/don't support it, but this has changed dramatically in the past year.  Apparently Windows Live Movie Maker in Windows 7 supports it.  (Not in Windows Vista or earlier.)
    2)  It requires a lot of CPU power compared to what systems are currently capable of to work with, just like standard definition video did back in 1998-2000.  This will also get easier over time.
    Both of the above are the price you pay for being on the cutting edge in terms of video quality.
    Tape-based HD camcorders use HDV, which is MPEG-2 based.  This is somewhat easier to work with, but I would not reccommend a tape-based camcorder (motor noise, ruggedness, cost of media, etc.)

  • FCP to DVD and making movie file smaller

    Hi Guys
    I have a project I made in FCP, it is HDV 1440x1080 and it is one hour long. I have exported it as a 'make movie self contained' quicktime movie and the end result is 12gb and it says the dimensions are 1920x1080
    I have dropped it into compressor and submitted it to make a 90 minute DVD, it's doing it's think now but will take about 2-3 hours it seems, is this right or is there a quicker way?
    Also I dropped the movie onto an external HD and copied it over to my laptop but when I try to play it it says it is unable to play because it doesn't recognise it. Now it is a quicktime movie I converted from FCP and I have quicktime 7 on my laptop so why will it not recognise it?
    I have dropped the self contained movie into Mpeg Streamclip as I want to make it smaller and into something that I can put on my HD and then play on my laptop, what should I convert it to? or is there another way I can export the project out of FCP that will make it a smaller file and one I can put on my Harddrive to then play on my laptop?
    Thanks for any responses
    Mich

    > will take about 2-3 hours it seems, is this right or is there a quicker way?
    An hour of footage as HDV?  Yeah, this is normal.  Even if it was ProRes, it would still take a couple hours.
    >Now it is a quicktime movie I converted from FCP and I have quicktime 7 on my laptop so why will it not recognise it?
    Don't have FCP installed on that laptop do you?  The HDV codec (and XDCAM and DVCPRO HD) that FCP uses, captures too and exports, ONLY comes with FCP.  DOn't have it, and the computer cannot see the file.
    >I want to make it smaller and into something that I can put on my HD and then play on my laptop, what should I convert it to?
    H.264.  Use the QT 7 STREAMING options in Compressor

  • Pictures blurry from making them smaller

    I am trying to use photoshop elements 10 to make an invitation! When I drag the picture over to my background it comes over as 200x200 when I make it smaller to the size I need the picture to be,the picture is blurry! How can I fix this?

    Often a shutdown and restart will fix a multitude of problems. Glad it's back to normal.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Making movie clips play in reverse in AS 3.0

    Hey all. I'm changing all my files to AS 3.0 because of some
    new elements I'd like to use in flash CS4.
    Here:
    http://www.iaw-atlanta.com/IvyLeague1-13-09.html
    I have the menu navigation at the bottom with 4 buttons. When the
    buttons are moused over they ascend and when they are moused out
    the movie plays in reverse so that they descend. Basically in the
    movie clip, I have it stopped as well as gotoAndPlay the next frame
    when the button is moused over and then have a script telling it to
    reverse when moused out. I know how to do this in AS 2.0 but how
    can I translate the script to 3.0?

    DjPhantasy5,
    > Ok thanks, I'll see what he also has to say as well.
    Actually, NedWebs pretty much nailed it. :) The approach
    you've taken
    is an interesting one, because it scales all the way back to
    Flash Player 5,
    which didn't yet support the MovieClip.onEnterFrame event.
    Without that
    event, you need something like your "controller" symbol -- a
    separate
    looping timeline -- to perform code that depends on frame
    loops.
    Available as of Flash Player 6, that event would allow you
    to
    consolidate your code a bit by putting it all in a single
    frame and avoiding
    the extra movie clip symbol. That doesn't mean your approach
    is wrong, by
    any stretch. In fact, it's good to know your options, because
    if you ever
    need to publish to Flash Player 5, you'll probably do best to
    use the setup
    you've taken.
    I'll demonstrate onEnterFrame in just a bit, in case you
    want to take a
    look at that.
    >> there's no _root reference in AS3, but you can use a
    >> MovieClip(this.parent) (which replaces what _parent
    >> used to do) to locate something outside of the
    immediate
    >> movieclip.
    The term "parent," in this context, is technically a
    property of the
    MovieClip class, which means all movie clips in AS3 have
    access to the
    "parent" feature, which points to the timeline that contains
    the movie clip
    in question. Buttons also feature a "parent" property. In
    AS2, this
    property acted exactly the same, only it was preceeded by an
    underscore.
    In fact, NedWebs' suggested code works the same in your
    existin file.
    Instead of this:
    // Your existing code ...
    if (_root.animation._currentframe>1) {
    _root.animation.prevFrame();
    this.gotoAndPlay(2)
    if (_root.animation._currentframe<=1) {
    this.gotoAndStop(1);
    ... you could be using this:
    // Alternative code ...
    if (_parent.animation._currentframe>1) {
    _parent.animation.prevFrame();
    gotoAndPlay(2)
    if (_parent.animation._currentframe<=1) {
    gotoAndStop(1);
    ... because from this scope -- that is, from this point of
    view -- the
    MovieClip._parent property points to the same timeline that
    _root does.
    That changes, of course, based on how deeply nested the
    current scope is.
    The term "this" in the above code is optional, because Flash
    understands
    what scope you're in. From the point of view of this code,
    _parent is
    understood to refer to the current scope's parent timeline,
    just like
    gotoAndPlay() is understood to refer to the current scope's
    own timeline.
    You could precede either of those by "this" or not.
    Many people will argue that _root is probably best avoided,
    only because
    it's a slippery slope. It doesn't always refer to the main
    timeline you
    think it does, depending on whether or not your SWF is loaded
    into another
    SWF at runtime. Meanwhile, _parent *always* refers to the
    immediately
    parent timeline.
    So when you look at it that way, this perfectly valid AS2:
    if (_parent.animation._currentframe>1) {
    ... isn't much different at all from its AS3 counterpart:
    if (MovieClip(parent).animation.currentFrame>1) {
    It would be nicer if you didn't need to cast the parent
    reference as a
    movie clip here, but if you don't, AS3 doesn't realize that
    the scope in
    question is a movie clip.
    >> You can string them along as...
    >> MovieClip(this.parent.parent)
    Exactly.
    >> Your _currentframe in the the controller becomes
    >> currentFrame. That's about it. The rest of what I
    >> saw will fly as is.
    Not quite. AS3 doesn't support the on() or onClipEvent()
    functions, so
    you won't be able to attach your code direction to the
    button. Instead,
    you'll have to put it in a keyframe -- which you can also do
    with AS2. It's
    a good idea, in any case, because it allows you to put all
    your code in one
    place, making it easier to find.
    Here's a quick note on direct attachment:
    http://www.quip.net/blog/2006/flash/museum-pieces-on-and-onclipevent
    To convert your existing FLA structure to AS3, you might,
    for example,
    do this:
    animation.buttonMode = true;
    animation.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, outHandler);
    animation.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER,
    overHandler);
    function outHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
    controller.gotoAndPlay(2);
    function overHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
    controller.gotoAndPlay(4);
    That takes care of the on(rollout) and on(rollover) code in
    your current
    version. The first line (buttonMode) is only necessary
    because I got rid of
    the button symbol and, instead, associated the event handlers
    directly with
    your animation clip. (Movie clips handle button-style events,
    too, so you
    don't need the button.) In AS3, event handling is very
    straightforward:
    you reference the object (here, animation), invoke its
    inherited
    addEventListener() method, then pass in two parameters: a)
    the event to
    listen for, and b) the function to perform when that event
    occurs.
    You can see that spelled out above. In AS2, there are quite
    a few ways
    to handle events, including on()/onClipEvent(), so it's
    harder to know when
    to use what approach. For buttons and movie clips, the
    princple works the
    same as I just showed, but the syntax is different.
    Let's take a quick look at reducing all this code by using
    the
    onEnterFrame event. First, check out this AS2 version:
    animation.onRollOut = outHandler;
    animation.onRollOver = overHandler;
    function outHandler():Void {
    this.onEnterFrame = reversePlay;
    function overHandler():Void {
    this.onEnterFrame = null;
    this.play();
    function reversePlay():Void {
    this.prevFrame();
    All of that code would appear in frame 1. You don't need the
    controller
    movie clip. The animation clip no longer contains an orb
    button, because
    we're using animation itself as the "button". (You can always
    see what
    functionality any object has by looking up its class. If
    you're dealing
    with a movie clip, look up the MovieClip class. See the
    Properties heading
    to find out what characteristics the object has, see Methods
    to find out
    what the object can do, and see Events to find out what the
    object can react
    to.)
    In the above code, it's all laid out pretty easily. This is
    AS2,
    remember. We have two events we're listening for:
    MovieClip.onRollOut and
    MovieClip.onRollOver. Those events are established for the
    animation movie
    clip by way of its instance name, and associated with
    corresponding custom
    functions. The outHandler() function associates yet another
    function to the
    MovieClip.onEnterFrame event of the animation clip. Very
    simply, it
    instructs animation to perform the custom reversePlay()
    function every time
    it encounters an onEnterFrame event. The overHandler()
    function kills that
    association by nulling it out, and telling animation to play,
    via the
    MovieClip.play() method. Finally, the reversePlay() function
    simply invokes
    MovieClip.prevFrame() on the animation clip.
    Here's the AS3 version:
    animation.buttonMode = true;
    animation.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, outHandler);
    animation.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER,
    overHandler);
    function outHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
    animation.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, reversePlay);
    function overHandler(evt:MouseEvent):void {
    animation.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,
    reversePlay);
    animation.play();
    function reversePlay(evt:Event):void {
    evt.target.prevFrame();
    It looks wordier, but if you look carefully, you'll see that
    it's
    essentially the same thing. The main difference is the way
    scope works in
    AS3. In AS2, there are numerous references to "this", because
    the event
    handler functions operate in the same scope as the object to
    which the
    association is made. In AS3, the references aren't to "this",
    but rather to
    the same animation clip by its *intance name*, because in
    AS3, the scope
    operates in the same timeline in which the code appears
    (namely, in this
    case, the main timeline).
    In the reversePlay() function, in order to emulate a "this"
    sort of
    setup, I'm referring to the parameter that gets passed to all
    event handler
    functions in AS3. I happened to name it "evt" (for event),
    but you can call
    it what you like. In the case of reversePlay(), the evt
    parameter refers to
    an instance of the Event class, which has a target property.
    The target
    property refers to the object that dispatched the event --
    happens to be
    animation, in this case. So evt.target, in this context,
    refers to
    animation, which is what I invoke the MovieClip.prevFrame()
    method on.
    I've uploaded a handful of FLA files to my server. I won't
    keep them
    there forever ... maybe a couple weeks, as of this post:

  • Questions on making Movies with new camcorder

    Hi all,
    First, let me say these forums are extremely useful. Thanks for taking a minute to read (and maybe respond). I have a couple of questions / need some advice about making iMovies with my new camcorder.
    My camcorder is a Sony DCR-SR40 - it's a 30GB hard-disk based digital camcorder. It creates MPEG-2 files (and connects to my G5 with USB2.0).
    1. When I get the camcorder connected and copy over the files, I can't play them in QuickTime 7 (I got an error opening the file). So I spent $20 and bought the QT MPEG-2 plugin - now I can play them but there's no audio. Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug with QT?
    2. So I downloaded Streamclip and can happily convert files to a bunch of different formats (what a neat app!). Is there a format that would be best to convert to for making iMovies (iM 6)? DV? MPEG-4? (see next question).
    3. When I create my iM6 project, should I create DV or MPEG-4? (Is there a good summary anywhere on all these formats? It confuses the heck outta me.) I want to turn my iMovies into DVDs to watch with my family and QT movies that I can leave as files and watch on my work laptop. What's the best format (DV or MPEG-4) to use?
    4. Assuming I create DV iMovie projects, my thought was to convert my MPEG-2 files (from the camcorder) and AVI files (from my digital cam that takes short movies) to DV using Streamclip, then import those into iMovie; all that seems like a bunch of work (I guess I could use the batch function) - but is this the right way of doing things? Or can I just let iMovie do the translation to DV when I import?
    Sorry for all the noob questions here, I just don't have a lot of time to tinker (15 month old and newborn) so I'd prefer to just get advice from the folks that know (you all!).
    Thanks so much
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
    as you allready realized: the iApps are made for miniDV/D8, … but you have found the workarounds...
    1) … you hear no audio when exporting/converting the mpegs with QT... that's no bug, that's due to the nature of mpeg2... the audio and video are "woven together" (tech term= muxxed)... QT supports this playback-format for ... ehm, playback, but "de-muxxing" is not supported by QT....
    2) best format for use in iM/iDVD? my standard reply: DV
    (I've read in the meantime, some report using the Apple Lossless Codec, you should find in the export options of SC, delivers better results - beauty lies in eye of... needs a powerful Mac and "eats" 4 -5x more diskspace then DV)....
    3) DV; mpeg4 is supported to handle iSight "video" and some digi-stills deliver in this format; again, mpegs are for delivery, not for processing.... I didn't found THE website for explaining all that, you can spend hours on wiki and many, many more sites... for the average user (as me), I wrote (still write...) a short summary, click here >> Codexx; an excellent source for background info is forum's member QuickTimeKirk's "book" (=.pdf delivery), you get for 10$ here >> QTpro explained
    4) … that IS a bunch of work, because you tought the old dog new tricks... with my miniDV and still-cam all that is done with a single click and works like charm ...
    this board is full of Qs concerning support of DVDcorders/HDcorders... One can just speculate, wether Apple will implement the support of these formats... I strongly guess NOT, … we saw in the past e.g. no support of (S)VCD, another popular format (to its time), but not fullfilling the high standards of SJ....

  • Tips on making a Rubik's cube?

    Hi all, I'm making a program that solves a rubik's cube for my final project in my first year AP Java class. However, I'm completely new to Java 3D but I've been working my way through Sun's getting started tutorial. However, I still don't have an idea of how to make thirty different colored cubes. (I'd love to just use the color cube but I understand that that can't be re-colored(correct?)) Any tips on how to get this done would be awesome. Thanks!

    Thanks guys. I had read chapter one of Sun's getting tutorial but I skipped ahead to chapter two and checked out the box class. After some research on the Java3D API I found that you can colour each side of a box a different color. I just extended the box, made a few new methods of my own and it's perfect. However, now I have another problem that would probably be best in another thread.

    I thought I read somewhere that if you replace a HD in your macbook pro, the new one should not have shock protection as it interferes with the mac's own internal shock sensor. So I went out and bought a Seagate 7200.4 500GB drive - without the 'G' S
